My iPad is my favorite electronic gadget and the grandkids love it. It has built in wireless, so can be used to get online when we are in the car...not the driver of course. The kids had so much fun with it when we were driving out to the coast. It's great for looking up places we want to go, like restaurants, it has games on it and I can come here to Yahoo Answers when stting on my bottom as a passenger in the car. Yep, yep, yep! It is my favorite!

What are some of the differences betwen the work of a teacher today and 30 years ago?

I understand why public schools treat all kids alike. I mean you don't want to give favors to one student and deny favors to another one. That is also wrong but when a student works hard and has actually achieved more than his or her class mates. Doesn't that student deserve to learn something else rather than the same old repetitive stuff that he himself or herself learned on their own?

Lets face it, some students really don't want to be there and they prevent other students from learning. That is why I believe that the private sector can do a far better job than the public school system. In the private sector the parents are paying for that child's education so they expect them to learn something. If that child isn't learning much then the parent can try another school. No two kids are exactly alike so teaching our kids exactly the same thing isn't going to work in every single situation.

Some kids do well in a public school system and others do better when they are home schooled. Wouldn't it be great if we had businesses out there trying to find ways to educate our children and make a profit for themselves at the same time?

Think about it. The pharmaceutical, internet and technical fields are an example of what the free market can accomplish. The students are actually breaking public school regulations by playing with their little electronic gadgets rather than studying in class. That is because the free market has produced products that are far superior to anything that the public school system could ever come up with on their own. Imagine if we allowed the free market to teach our kids. Wouldn't the free market find a way to keep the students interested?

They would spend half of the time trying to control noisy and disorderly students. The other half repeating the same thing, to students who had a hard time understanding the subject.

I don't blame the teachers, they have overcrowded classrooms and few resources.
And I don't blame the students. Some come exhausted to school, dazed, hungry and even high from the crazy home life they have.

I was the lucky few to take proactive steps to educate myself at home. And would go to high school to socialize with students and help out the teachers by tutoring problem students.

Some of them brag about how many grandchildren they have and/or how fast they are collecting them. They talk about their extensive travels or what wonderful jobs their spouses or kids have. Hmm... not keeping with the spirit at all. We've got a family friend who sent those letters out every year until last year and instead she sent a family newsletter. For crying out loud, a newsletter. It had little blurbs for her children... 'Katie's Corner' and even one for the dog. She went on and on about how her son was a black belt and on the Honor roll and how her daughter was the best reader in her class and all this other bull crap that nobody really wants to hear on Christmas. I agree... they just want you think think they're something special. For them, Christmas is the time of year to let everyone know how great life is, even if it's only to avoid thinking about the downpoints. I don't buy a word of it though. It's great to share love and be friendly and even if people don't mean to brag, they do... and they shove the rest of us down. Whoever said, on this page, that you're 'not whorthy' to read those letters proablby has never recived such a Christmas card. I wish we could all brag and be happy for one another. unfortunately, I am pretty selfish. I fear that my maternal instincts wont kick in or something!!! Are there any former selfish women out there that changed when the baby arrived, if so please give me details. I would love to hear your stories.


I am 18 wks pregnant, I love to travel, shop, treat myself to spas, spend like crazy, spoil myself with electronic gadgets like the most current car to come out, current phones and new DVD blue ray (stuff like that).

Well on the up side, someone new to shop for! If you have people to watch your baby sometimes then it prob wont be so bad. If it is just you and only you 24/7 then you are in for a rude awakening. I loved to shop, I called it a sport, one I was damn good at! WIth just one kid I think you can still travel and do some stuff just bring them along. You prob wont have time or the interest to get the newest stuff. I still havent the time how to work the ipod I got two years ago!! I still consider myself a bit selfish but the kids come first always no matter what and it is kinda automatic. I didn't fall madly in love with the girls when they were born, it took a little time for me to get to know them and then oh boy, I am in love with them. I did however fall in love with my son from the minute I saw him. He is blissfull.
Don't worry you will be fine. It sounds like you have enough money to get help if you need it. Start looking for help now it is hard to find a babysitter or nanny you can trust.

A. *They have the "lump o' coal" stocking stuffers at many retailers that have different gifts inside. Personally my oldest son collects cars. So what I bought last year was a pack of two that had the hotwheels inside.
*You can buy those small remote control cars ( I mean matchbox size small). Which seems to be a big hit with kids and parents alike b/c they are cheap and are not too space consuming. They can be found at walmart for about 3 or 4 dollars.
*Pack of Batteries.
*Finger Flashlights.
*One of their favorite cartoons or movies on DVD. I know it sounds expensive but relatively not. Walmart had ones like Spiderman 2 etc for 2.96.
*School Supplies( things you were going to have to buy anyway, its an even better idea if they are into drawing etc.) *You could get pencils, pens, colored pencils, etc.
*A Watch.
*Yo-Yo.
*Want to try something different and unique? How about going to a local museum or novelty store, you could buy some space food/drinks,lunar ice candy and funny gifts like talking pens or whoppie cushions.
*If they have a collection of some sort (rock, stamp, etc.) you could buy them something to add to that collection.

Are you more of a "toy" grandparent or a clothing,socks and underwear grandparent?

Q. Christmas time, birthdays, any other time you give your grandchildren a gift, do you give them toys or clothes and practical things?

My mother in law thought it totally disgraceful that I always gave my own kids toys and games. Clothes when they needed, but most often, toys and games. Now, as a grandma, I still give my grandkids the video games or electronic gadgets that they particularly want. Leave it to their other grandma or whoever, to give them the clothes.
What is your feeling on this?

A. We always buy toys for the grandchildren when they are young but when they get older then we give them a choice of a gift card or clothes.

What are good stocking stuffer gifts for boys ages 12-14?

A. *They have the "lump o' coal" stocking stuffers at many retailers that have different gifts inside. Personally my oldest son collects cars. So what I bought last year was a pack of two that had the hotwheels inside.
*You can buy those small remote control cars ( I mean matchbox size small). Which seems to be a big hit with kids and parents alike b/c they are cheap and are not too space consuming. They can be found at walmart for about 3 or 4 dollars.
*Pack of Batteries.
*Finger Flashlights.
*One of their favorite cartoons or movies on DVD. I know it sounds expensive but relatively not. Walmart had ones like Spiderman 2 etc for 2.96.
*School Supplies( things you were going to have to buy anyway, its an even better idea if they are into drawing etc.) *You could get pencils, pens, colored pencils, etc.
*A Watch.
*Yo-Yo.
*Want to try something different and unique? How about going to a local museum or novelty store, you could buy some space food/drinks,lunar ice candy and funny gifts like talking pens or whoppie cushions.
*If they have a collection of some sort (rock, stamp, etc.) you could buy them something to add to that collection.
*You can buy those handheld games (starting anywhere from a dollar at dollar stores and walmart and on up. )
*Some cool Spy gagets/gear.

I go to our Eveything is a dollar store, where I buy a huge stocking for both of my boys (you see these elsewhere for 15 dollars or more). They stand about 2 and a half to 3 feet tall. Are you more of a "toy" grandparent or a clothing,socks and underwear grandparent?

Q. Christmas time, birthdays, any other time you give your grandchildren a gift, do you give them toys or clothes and practical things?

My mother in law thought it totally disgraceful that I always gave my own kids toys and games. Clothes when they needed, but most often, toys and games. Now, as a grandma, I still give my grandkids the video games or electronic gadgets that they particularly want. Leave it to their other grandma or whoever, to give them the clothes.
What is your feeling on this?

A. We always buy toys for the grandchildren when they are young but when they get older then we give them a choice of a gift card or clothes.

I am 18 wks pregnant, I love to travel, shop, treat myself to spas, spend like crazy, spoil myself with electronic gadgets like the most current car to come out, current phones and new DVD blue ray (stuff like that).

A. Well on the up side, someone new to shop for! If you have people to watch your baby sometimes then it prob wont be so bad. If it is just you and only you 24/7 then you are in for a rude awakening. I loved to shop, I called it a sport, one I was damn good at! WIth just one kid I think you can still travel and do some stuff just bring them along. You prob wont have time or the interest to get the newest stuff. I still havent the time how to work the ipod I got two years ago!! I still consider myself a bit selfish but the kids come first always no matter what and it is kinda automatic. I didn't fall madly in love with the girls when they were born, it took a little time for me to get to know them and then oh boy, I am in love with them. I did however fall in love with my son from the minute I saw him. He is blissfull.
Don't worry you will be fine. It sounds like you have enough money to get help if you need it. Start looking for help now it is hard to find a babysitter or nanny you can trust.

A. Even though its not a quality, the most important would be the electronics gadgets. They would be the most useful in catching spirits or disproving them.

If some students are smarter than others then why are all students treated the same?

Q. I understand why public schools treat all kids alike. I mean you don't want to give favors to one student and deny favors to another one. That is also wrong but when a student works hard and has actually achieved more than his or her class mates. Doesn't that student deserve to learn something else rather than the same old repetitive stuff that he himself or herself learned on their own?

Lets face it, some students really don't want to be there and they prevent other students from learning. That is why I believe that the private sector can do a far better job than the public school system. In the private sector the parents are paying for that child's education so they expect them to learn something. If that child isn't learning much then the parent can try another school. No two kids are exactly alike so teaching our kids exactly the same thing isn't going to work in every single situation.

Some kids do well in a public school system and others do better when they are home schooled. Wouldn't it be great if we had businesses out there trying to find ways to educate our children and make a profit for themselves at the same time?

Think about it. The pharmaceutical, internet and technical fields are an example of what the free market can accomplish. The students are actually breaking public school regulations by playing with their little electronic gadgets rather than studying in class. That is because the free market has produced products that are far superior to anything that the public school system could ever come up with on their own. Imagine if we allowed the free market to teach our kids. Wouldn't the free market find a way to keep the students interested?

I mean if they don't or can't do it then they won't remain in business for long.

A. I agree 100%, if the school system would go private, results would highly improve. Private or home schooling are the best options for education, the numbers don't lie.

I went to public school and my experience was teachers did not treat students the same. Many teachers would have over crowded classrooms. They would spend half of the time trying to control noisy and disorderly students. The other half repeating the same thing, to students who had a hard time understanding the subject.

I don't blame the teachers, they have overcrowded classrooms and few resources.
And I don't blame the students. Some come exhausted to school, dazed, hungry and even high from the crazy home life they have.

I was the lucky few to take proactive steps to educate myself at home. And would go to high school to socialize with students and help out the teachers by tutoring problem students.

What do you think about the practice of sending brag letters in Christmas cards?

Q. They tell about how rosy their life has been and how great the past year has been to them. For example, their son is class president, and their daughter is on the honour roll. Some of them brag about how many grandchildren they have and/or how fast they are collecting them. They talk about their extensive travels or what wonderful jobs their spouses or kids have. Nowdays, they brag about their electronic gadgets and their computers. The sun shines perpetually on these people. You would really think they knew Santa Claus better than anyone else, and they make other people feel sick and depressed. They even seem to imply that they are getting all these things because they have been good.

Is this practice in keeping with the spirit of Christmas?

A. Hmm... not keeping with the spirit at all. We've got a family friend who sent those letters out every year until last year and instead she sent a family newsletter. For crying out loud, a newsletter. It had little blurbs for her children... 'Katie's Corner' and even one for the dog. She went on and on about how her son was a black belt and on the Honor roll and how her daughter was the best reader in her class and all this other bull crap that nobody really wants to hear on Christmas. I agree... they just want you think think they're something special. For them, Christmas is the time of year to let everyone know how great life is, even if it's only to avoid thinking about the downpoints. I don't buy a word of it though. It's great to share love and be friendly and even if people don't mean to brag, they do... and they shove the rest of us down. Whoever said, on this page, that you're 'not whorthy' to read those letters proablby has never recived such a Christmas card. I wish we could all brag and be happy for one another. It'd be great if Christmas worked that way, but it doesn't in our heads because the world bassically sucks.
