Sadie

So we live in Dallas Texas and it is sooooo HOT! So hot that my kids dont want to go out and play. So I would like some suggestions on activities that we can do indoors. In our home and anywhere else.
We have three boys. Ages 4,2 & 5 months.
And I know they get bored inside all day so help! :-)
Thanks and God Bless

Good building blocks to make towers?

Daniel

What would be a good inexpensive block system to use to build tower sculptures etc. ?
Im looking for something interlocking such as LEGOs but less expensive and easy to find in large quantities

Answer
when i was a kid, we had some blocks that were cut off the bottoms of fence pickets, to make the pickets shorter. the blocks were twice as long as they were wide, and of normal fence picket thickness - around 3/4 of an inch. I've never seen them for sale anywhere, but they got used more than any store bought blocks that i've ever seen. Interestingly, my younger sister never played with them -- only the boys did. By stacking them 2x2 on their sides, we could make a tower that reached nearly to the ceiling. They were sort of like Jenga blocks, but larger -- 3 1/2 x 7 inches or so. When our daughter was born, I looked for something that i could make them out of, but when i realized that it's a boy's toy, not a girls toy, i dropped the idea.

Do you bring toys for your child when you go somewhere?

I have a 3 year old daughter and my sister has a 3 year old son. We all went to a christening today and after the church everyone went to a restaurant to eat.

I brought a Dora doll and a travel Aquadoodle for my daughter and my sister brought a little box of plastic building toys for her son. And we didn't see even one other child/parent with a toy, stuffed animal, book, etc.

There were about 9 kids under 5 years old at the restaurant and EVERY one of them fought with our kids for these toys. One woman actually took the Dora doll off of our table and took it back to her table, telling my daughter that her son "really loves Dora and needs to play with it for a few minutes."

I just don't get it. If you're going somewhere with your child and you know you'll be gone for several hours, how can you not bring something for them to play with? Or a coloring book ... something?
Oh, I did go and get it. After she said that to my daughter I was kind of speechless. I just looked at my husband and said, what just happened here? After a few seconds, when that wore off, I went and got it.

Answer
I don't do it every time I go somewhere, but if it were an event like you attend today where the children need to sit still not to disturb others around them,or if I know it's gonna be a long day where they would get restless, then yes I do bring a few things. And that lady you are talking about taking your child's doll...I don't think I could have dealt w/ that!!

What non toxic paints are available in Australia?

Edward Bal

I have to build a toy train (mallard 4-6-2) for a high school Tech studies project and need to find a company that makes a non-toxic, kid-safe, blue paint that I can buy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Try Spotlight. I was in there yesterday and they had a range of kid's paints in all colours of the rainbow. They had Disney characters on the tubes (sorry I can't remember the name of them) and I am sure they would be non-toxic if they have been made for kids. They hang by their caps on a rack.

My kids have so many toys already, so I am really torn on what to get my 15 month old for Christmas. I have some mega blocks so far, but that is it. I want some ideas for inexpensive educational or skill building toys that will "grow with him" so that he will get a lot of use out of them. Preferably without a lot of little pieces. We want to keep mess to a minimum. Thanks!!

Answer
Get your 15 month old something colorful that has lots of things to do on it. Like a Playskool Busy Basics Ball-Tivity Center, or if your child is a boy, get him a Playskool Tonka Cushy Crusin' Fire Truck.

Does anybody remember these from the eighties?

vamp7815

They were kids building toys, pipes and square blocks that you could put together to make benches and chairs and tables, I can not remember what they are called does anybody know?
The pipes were white and they easily clicked onto the other pieces, the square pieces were blue and red I think.
No they were not leggos, or tinker toys

Answer
it could be a lego or lincon logs

Do you think Santa's Elves ever wish to see the faces of the kids who receive their pieces of work?

Do you think they get angry knowing Santa gets all the credit despite the fact they are the ones building toys all year?

Answer
I like this question, it still amazes me how some people can get so worked up over the silliest things.

Now to answer your question, I would bet they do feel a bit jaded
after all these years of hard work, and dedication to their fine craft.

What are some easy things a kid could build with common house hold items?

Bradon C

My son loves to build things but he dosent like help from anyone and he wants to build something easy that only uses common house hold items it dosent matter what it is if there are any internet sites plz post them for me to look at

Answer
Tell him to search the house first for unused/unwanted items and collect the all and make a list. Then go on the internet with him and enter the 'name of the item' and 'recycle' or 'craft'. Then when he finds something that interests him, print out the instructions (don't forget to turn that paper over and use the other side when you print out the next project, makes for a great lesson on not wasting) and let him go to town.

Also, get him a couple of boxes from the grocer. Have him decorate them. One for charity, one for items to use to make things and one for items he has made that he can give as gifts.

You will find that there are more crafts and toys to make than you have time. For example, you can make ornaments out of used light bulbs, ornaments out of old cd's or those free aol ones you get in the mail.

Having a place to put things he can use for future projects saves you a mess in his room. And saves on the environment. And as a bonus, he can not only make toys, he can make gifts for Christmas and have the joy of making someone happy.
