I would try books. Kids of all ages love them and it something that would last for a long time.

Also blocks and other stacking toys. Your 2 year old will like building things, and both will enjoy knocking them down. Super simple and they will last forever. My 8 year old god son will play with blocks when ever he is over.

My daughter has loved her Weebles for a while now. We got her Weeblot castle and it has a slide to send them down and a moat that spins. It says 18months+ on the pacakging but she loved it at 13months and still loves it now and she just turned 2. They have all sorts of neat sets to look into.

For your 2 year old try Mr. Potato Head. Get him a big section of pieces and just let him create. My duaghter got a set a couple weeks ago and will play with him for hours at a time, plus it is a great way to teach them body parts.

You may also want to look into getting a playhouse, it would be great for both of them.

My kids love the Playskool Weeble playsets. They have all kinds of cute weeble sets like a castle or treehouse. If you cant find those I say go for Fisher Price Little People. My 14 month old and 3 year play with those all the time. Good luck!

Are vintage Fisher Price toys safe for 1 year old?

My daughter just loves the vintage Fisher Price toys at our church. I recently bought her a 1972 toy, which she sometimes puts in her mouth. Do these old toys pose any health risks to her? Do they contain lead based paint, etc? I would just like to know for sure to be safe! Done some research online, but havn't found much information. Any answers would be appreciated!

No and "maybe". No if they have been opened and not sealed but due to no limitations in the 70's on lead paint usage I would say no unless the toy is vinyl and not plastic. Maybe if the toy is new and never been opened due to large amounts of metal they used in the 70's and these parts oxidize and you can never thoroughly clean these enough so toys without exposed metal I would say no. It's really not a good choice.
We have 2 kids ages 10 + 13 and we have never let them have pre 90's Fisher-Price due to the "unseen" dangers.
Fisher-Price can send you a testing kit and some other manufacturers offers these too.

Kid knex is the best construction toy my kids have ever had I bought one cheap set and my kids played with it constantly for a week I then added to it, they have played with that more than anything else since they were around three, they are six and seven now and they are still going strong. I have since introduced the version knex which is for older kids and is just as popular but the kid knex is not on it's way out yet. It is also one of the most popular thing that their friends play with they also have lego, playmobil, mechano, bricks and a room full of stuff.

Good toys for 12-18 months are ones that work with their cognitive abilities. They sell a a ton of great learning toys at Target that are great for 1 year olds, also the little boxes that different shapes fit inside are great too as well as books and soft baby dolls.

My son is 8 months we are getting ready to buy our first home we have always lived in apartments and never had a yard , what are good toys that a 1 year old will love to play outside with? He will be one in may his dad is building him a big wooden swing set for his birthday , what else ? We are thinking of getting a pool since he loves water. What about a sprinkler? Any personal experiences will be very much appreciated

Small trampeline, bounce house, pools. I think little tikes has a mud pie table which the kids like. Outdoor kitchens and grill, sandbox, and of course the swing set will be a lot of fun. Sidewalk chalk, bubbles, if you get a dog playing with the baby and dog in the yard. Tball (little tikes set comes with stand and ball), the other big bouncy balls at Wal Mart. Basketball hoop and ball (once again, little tikes I believe). I have also seen lawnmowers that blow bubbles and kids gardening tool sets. See saw, tricycles (radio flyer has some nice ones for the younger ones), battery powered ride on toys, slides, clubhouse. The list goes on and on.

My daughter probably likes the sidewalk chalk, pool, and sandbox the best. She loves playing with her dog inside/outside no matter what the season is.

How do I get my daughter to stop throwing things?

My daughter is almost 3 and lately she seems to have a serious problem with throwing her toys. I know 1-year olds throw and drop stuff b/c they want to see what happens but she knows stuff drops/bounces/whatever. My husband and I have tried timeouts, taking away her toys (the ones she was throwing at least). She even got in trouble at the church nursery for throwing which was a bit embarrassing. She has a bunch of those Little People toys which are unfortunately great for throwing.

The issue here is you are telling your daughter not to throw things and she is doing it anyway. So the problem is, she does not obey. So you must teach her to obey.

Teaching obedience is simple but requires firmness and consistency:

1. Give a command in a firm voice. (in this case say "No! Do not throw that toy."
2. If she doesn't obey, give her a firm pat on the bottom (not to hurt, but just to get her attention - she must know you mean what you say)
3. Repeat the command and watch for obedience.
4. Continue correcting as needed until she stops throwing toys. This might be another firm swat, a very stern NO with eye contact or something else.
5. Outlast the child as long as it takes and eventually they will obey. Ignore tears and pouting during this process. Just be firm and stand your ground.

If you follow this guide EVERY time and do it consistently, you will have an obedient child. Some will take longer than others, but eventually they will learn you are in control, you mean what you say, and you are willing to see it through until they obey.

Forget "time out" and sending them to their room. What you are doing in that instance is avoiding time and time again a necessary confrontation - one where you teach your child that you must be obeyed.

Time out is simply a punishment. But it does not address the key problem - i.e. lack of obedience.

Sure, kids don't like time out but they will suffer through it and then go back to disobedience again given enough time.

I buy my 1 1/2 year old a few toys every month. They are piling up and I wonder if that's too many. She is an only child and I just want to make sure she is not bored. Of course, I read, dance, sing, with her too but sometimes it's nice when she entertains herself and toys are great for that.

Why would the cat start doing this all the sudden?

My sister has a 1 year old male cat (not fixed yet). They have had him since he was 8 weeks old and have not had any problems. He has always been a very well behaved cat. He has always done fine around their dog and two young sons. My sister gave birth to her third son last october and the cat was fine. Didn't seem to mind at all. She recently got a new puppy in January and again the cat was fine.
Well about 2 weeks ago the cat started randomly peeing all around the house. He has always gone in his litter box before this and now pees on anything he can find. Even things that are not on the floor. He has peed on the new babies car seat, blankets, bouncie seat, my brother in laws military uniform, kids toys, dogs bed and so on. They don't understand why he would just start doing this. His behavior hasn't changed otherwise, just the peeing thing.
So my question is why would he just begin this out of no where and what should my sister do to stop it? She does plan to call the vet. Thanks.
Thanks. I figured it was as simple as him needing to be neutered, but just wanted to make sure it wasn't a medical condition. She's calling the vet tomorrow to set up the appt to be neutered.

Hi Brit...unspayed/unneutered animals who become stressed with changes in the home will tend to spray to mark territory and is quite commonly more noted in male cats. Cats sexually mature around the age of 5-7 months and urine spraying is witnessed. It's truly important to mention to your sister to consider having the cat neutered as quickly as possible because spraying becomes a habitual issue which later becomes difficult to resolve even after spay/neuter.

Urine Spraying
When your cat rubs against your leg with his face, or scratches his scratching post, he is also depositing his scent from the glands in his cheeks and paws. Another equally normal but less pleasant marking behavior is urine spraying--the deposition of small amounts of urine around a given area. Spraying announces a cat's presence, establishes or maintains territorial boundaries, and advertises sexual availability.

Cats usually spray on vertical surfaces, like the backs of chairs, or walls. They don't squat to spray (as they do to urinate), but the tail lifts and quivers, and small puddles of urine are left in several consistent locations. Cats that spray are usually unneutered males and, to a lesser extent, unspayed females, but 10% of neutered males and 5% of neutered females also spray. In households with more than seven cats, the likelihood of spraying is high.

Cats may spray when they perceive a threat to their territory, such as when a new cat enters the home, or when outside cats are nearby. New furniture and carpet smells can prompt spraying as well. Cats may also spray out of frustration resulting from factorsâlike restrictive diets, or insufficient playtimeâoften wrongly perceived by humans as revenge.

How can I stop my cat from spraying?
Because spraying is different than other types of house soiling, different tactics are necessary to manage it. First, because there are often hormonal components to spraying, any intact animal should be neutered or spayed. Next, identify the stimuli that cause your cat to spray. If outside cats are responsible, motion detectors that trigger sprinklers can be used to deter them from coming onto your property. Additionally, you can discourage your cat from looking outside by closing blinds or shades, or by placing double-sided tape or electronic mats that deliver mild shocks onto your windowsills.

Address possible sources of frustration that may be causing your cat to spray. For example, introduce a new diet gradually, or discontinue it until the spraying is under control. Increasing the amount of playtime for an under-stimulated cat may also help ease frustration.

Spraying can also result from territorial disputes between cats in the same household. They may need to be separated and reintroduced slowly, using food treats to reward and encourage peaceful behavior.

Applying odor neutralizers anywhere your cat has sprayed may prevent him from spraying there again. Another useful commercial product is Feliway®, a synthetic pheromone that, when applied to household surfaces, mimics the scent of cat cheek gland secretions. Many cats will not spray on areas that have this scent. (See the end of this brochure for information on where to purchase the above-mentioned products.)
