Toys for 12-18 months?

frogysue

I've been getting some great deals on toys for my 8 month daughter at garage sales recently; it occurs to me if I was smart, I would stock up a bit for the future as well. But I don't know what toys are appropriate/best/most loved by older babies!
Thanks for your help!

Answer
A really great toy for that age is the Aqua Doodle. Beginning at this age, kids LOVE to draw on things! But giving a child this age a pen or crayon is a destructive idea. Aqua Doodle uses a water pen, so if they want to draw on other things there are no problems!

My 18 month old son lets other kids take toys away from him?

Hi, my son is very actice, he loves to play, run, climb, socialize with other kids... However, I've started to notice whenever he has a toy and a kid comes and takes it from him he will try to take it back, but if he can't he would just go away and get another toy.
It seems he doesn't really care or he doesn't want to confront other kids. My son doesn't cry, doesn't get upset, he just walks away and finds something else. He also shares. However, kids of his age do not share, and scream and say NO!

Maybe my son isn't aggresive enough or doesn't have a strong personality. I don't want other kids to take advantage of him. What do you think? What should I do?

Answer
Don't try to change your son. You should be happy with the way that he will just go and grab another toy. My nephew was like that with all of my cousins. They are all older then him. When he was a baby he'd find another toy to clam himself so he can go back to playing. However he is 4years old and if you take his toy he hits you, bites you anything and everything. Let him come around if he wants the toy he will get it back. Don't try to change him if there is now real problem.

My son will be 18 months old when his little brother will get here. I'm pretty worried about how he will react. A lot of other answers I've read say prepare him for baby's arrival by talking about it and explaining that there's a baby in my tummy etc. I'm not quite sure how to do that, or if it will even benefit at all since he is so young still.

Has anyone else had a second baby right on top of the first one? How did you deal with the jealousy issues?

Answer
I have a three year old. I have been involving her every step of the way. We told her before anyone else, and we even got her to tell other people, including my parents and my friends in mother's group. It was really cute and made her the center of attention too. She has helped me pick some toys and baby clothes for her little brother, and we are talking to her about names and things like that. I try to get her to feel the baby move, tho he always stops when she touches my belly lol. Eventually she'll get a kick.

And if she has lost her cuddle toy, i let her borrow the one she helped pick out for the baby, and tell her 'Squeaky said you could borrow his for now.' She says 'Awww, that's nice of him. And then Squeaky can share MY woobie!'

She comes to all the scans, and most of the Drs appointments. And my parents will bring her in soon after the birth to see the baby. I am even thinking of taking her on a tour of the birthing unit and maternity ward so she knows where mummy will be when she goes to hospital to push the baby out. (I've explained in non graphic terms, like 'i'm growing the baby in my tummy, like i did with you.' and i'll have to push it out when it's finished growing etc).

If you start making the baby a part of everyday life now, it will be less of a shock when they get here. It will still be a shock, i doubt my daughter quite gets what it means to have a new baby in the house, but it will hopefully be less. And i can back up what i've said before 'remember, i told you that the baby wont be able to play yet.' or 'we talked about how mummy would have to spend time with the baby.' So the concepts aren't new to her.

What are some good learning toys to buy a toddler for Christmas?

My son is 18 months old and I am not sure what to get him other than what I already have. I wanted to get him something specifically aimed at learning, not just fun time.

Answer
It may sound weird, but at this age - EVERYTHING is a learning toy. Your child will be able to learn from anything. Kids are sponges at this age and absorb everything from how something feels, to the noise it makes, to the way it moves, etc.

My son always loved things with wheels. He would flip cars over just to play with the wheels - especially ones that you could pull back, and then they'd go forward on their own. You could see the excitement in his face when he figured out how to do this on his own. =)

I've read articles that said constantly giving your baby toys that are teaching, and learning things can actually be detrimental. They say it limits a child's imagination. If a toy is telling your child that something is a bear.. then it's a bear. Nothing more. It's not a magical bear with super powers.. or a bear that loves to eat vanilla pudding.. it's just a bear.

My son does have some learning toys, but I've found he doesn't like them that much. (He likes cause and effect toys like keyboards/pianos.. those pop a shape things, etc where you have to do something to make something happen)

how do i introduce my 18 month old to daycare?

CaraLoder2

my son is 18 months old and has mainly been at home with me since he was born. he has never been in daycare, but i want to put him in daycare for sociialization so he can interact with other children. how do i go about the process with my son, and how do i prepare him for it? what are the pros and cons of daycare, and what should i look for in a daycare?

Answer
Introduce him gradually. Most daycares are flexible and will let you bring your son in for an hour or two during the week and build up until he is there for a full day. He will probably love it. Lots of kids, new toys, and interesting things to look at. However, once you try leaving him there one of two things could happen: he will scream and cry OR he will wave good bye and go off playing. Either way, it will make you cry, lol.

Look for a daycare center with a good teacher to student ratio. At 18 months, the teacher-student ratio is 1:6. Make sure the place is clean, bright, has friendly staff, current toys and updated educational tools, and that you feel comfortable there.

Daycare can be a great thing. Best of luck to you!

Does anybody have any tips for babysitting for an infant?

meg [arthu

I've got a part time job for when I go to Canada babysitting a 4 month old boy. I've had babysitting experience before but for no kids under the age of 18 months. Obviously, this is quite different because he's a lot younger and I can't just leave him to play with his toys like I can do with older kids. Has anyone had any similar experiences? Can you give me some tips?

Answer
You are certainly right- you can't leave a 4 month old alone! Never leave babies unattended. They'll fall over when you think they won't/can't, etc.! You can talk to them, play with age-appropriate toys with them, sing/lullabys, bath time is enjoyable for them, even reading to them at that young age is recommeneded and my daughter seemed to enjoy it! You can go for walks in the stroller if the weather is nice enough, or just bundle baby up well if it's a bit cold. Also babies like activity centers, jumpers, exersaucers at this age. Baby will be rolling around that age and soon enough, starting to sit up and crawl which is a fun, fun time.

I know I just need to just do it but I don't know where to start... how can I get motivated?

Answer
i feel your pain!!! im a mother of three ages 8,3, and 1. i work four days a week and my hubby is ALWAYS working. hes a neat freak and is usually making comments about the house and usually i dont care. i clean as much as i can when i have the time or energy during the day. then after the kids are asleep i sit and relax for about an hour then i do dishes or whatever needs to be done. fold the luandry as u sit on the couch. grab a "toy box" and load all the kids toys at once. you dont need to do it all at once!! once you see the results youll feel better i always do!! good luck and dont worry.....with kids your house will always be a mess

what are some big toys for a almost 18 month old
She has ALOT small toys and she has a lot of musical toys. The only real big toy is a sit, and bounce turtle. Anything? Thanks!

Answer
She needs a push and ride toy.

That is really important and a huge hit for an 18 month old, and they can also keep riding it at age 2. Get one that makes sounds. We have a spiderman truck, but for girls there is a little mermaid one I see a lot. They can press and pull on a lot of things to make noise. There are other models, but that one is a really big hit with kids.

There are lots of other toys to get, simple puzzles, blocks, stacking rings, shape sorters (a really good one) a magnetic board and gears / letters and numbers, basic art supplies, cars, trucks, trains, dolls, stuffed animals.

You can run them through the dishwasher, or put them in the laundry machine with laundry. Just using regular soap and very hot water.

What is the best way to discipline an 18 month old who bites?

My 18 month old son is bitting at Day Care, What can be done to stop this?

Answer
Unfortunately this is a common behavior for toddlers so don't feel bad. You are not a bad parent and you're son is not a bad kid. The first thing to do is find out why your son is biting. Chances are he's frustrated. Someone may take his toy or he can't verbalize how he's feeling. There is often a time where he's more prone to biting like at the end of the day or before nap time. Once you figure out why he's biting the next step is to eliminate the triggers if possible. This is difficult when he is in child care but try to do it at home.

Time outs work well as long as they are age appropriate. 1 minute per year/age.

never bite your child. It's abuse and you're only teaching him that biting is ok.

I always told the kids at my daycare that your teeth are for chewing your food not your friends. I got them to help me figure out good things to put in mouths. It became a game.

Good luck and hang in there. It's just a stage.
