Kayla Thay

I'm gonna start babysitting this summer and was wondering which toys to get for the kids to play with. I'm gonna be babysitting both girls and boys, so please keep that in mind. Thanks!

Answer

What is a good toy for a 7 year old boy?

Justonefor

my nephew is haveing his birthday party soon and i have no idea what to get him (well i had an idea but someone else already got it for him ).

He loves video games for his DS but i want to get him something he can play with outside or maybe a project he could do? he's not into coloring he's the kind of kid who likes to be on the go for the most part .

So i guess what i am asking is with the exception of any video games what is a good idea of a toy that a 7 year old boy would love oh and that would be ok in the event his 4 yr old sister wants a turn?

Answer
I have 9 y.o. twin sons and apart from video games, they love Lego (like the sets where you can build dinosaurs or airplanes), Pokemon cards, Harry Potter and Diary of a Wimpy kid books, science experiment or magic trick sets, transformers. For outdoor toys, you could get a water sprinkle toy or sports stuff like soccer ball, or baseball glove.

How Many Toys Does Your Child Have?

Lucy Harpe

My four year old stepson met a little boy at the park, they were playing well together so me and his mom decided to get them together for a playdate. They came over to our house and we went into my stepsons room to play with his toys, she walks in the room, looks at his toys, and says "where do you keep all of his toys?", I told her those are all of his toys, she looked surprised and said "Thats it?", I asked what she meant, she said "nothing, its just my son has so many toys I dont even know where to put them, and these toys are like, nothing compared to that", I have to say I was a bit offended, the way she said it made it sound like she thought we were depriving him or something. He doesn't have a ton of toys, but he has enough in our opinion, we dont like to overgift him because we dont think he really needs a thousand toys, hes perfectly happy with the ones he has and he treasures them and plays with each of them. He has-
- Four stuffed animals, his favorite teddy bear, a lion, an elephant, and a dog
- a shoebox of legos
- a play mobile pirate set
- Two trucks, a hess truck and a bulldozer
- Two cars and 5 hotwheel cars plus a track
- A toy boat
- some army men
- Blocks
- A play doctor kit
- A tricycle and a bike with training wheels
- A wooden rocking horse and a stick horse
- some play doh and other art supplies
- 5 action figures
- A few costumes
- 5 board games

He also has some outdoor things, like a sled and one of those ride in cars that you push with your feet. How many toys do your kids have? What are they? Would you be offended if someone said that to you? I know he has enough, hes never bored and has a great imagination, his favorite toy is a simple cardboard box.

Answer
My kids have too many toys. Most of the toys they have are simple toys. But... like a toy box full of stuffed animals. At least 10 baby dolls, and 6 tiny baby dolls (plus bottles, dresses, outfits, blankets, stroller, shopping cart with food, beds, etc.) Raggedy Ann and Andy, Max and Ruby, Mickey and Minnie, Snoopy and Woodstock... I mean, if I find a toy that goes with a book or a movie I like to get it so that she can play it out on her own. She has a toy-story book box thing with all the characters in it, they don't have joints just figures, but she loves that. Playmobil take-along doll house, Playmobil take-along Holiday House (Santa's House.) About 7 playmobil add-ons to give more moms, dads, babies, kids, etc. A ride-on for her and for her brother. Several top-type things, phones, things with dials and latches, things to open and figure out. A bag of musical instruments (glockenspiel, drums, harmonicas, penny whistles, jingle-bells, maracas, tamborines, etc.) Stacking rings. A lot of puppets. A lot of CARS toys, and two little ramp/parking garage type stuff. Oh, and a rocking lion who roars.

She just picked out 15 things to give away though (thank heavens.) They're not super small things either, one's a big giraffe and another is a moose. But more than that, it's a beginning.

Worse than the toys are the books. Her bookshelf will not hold any more books at this point. We either need another bookshelf (which is what I'm leaning towards since I don't want to get rid of books her brother is barely growing into...) or give away books. Coloring books, crayons markers, etc, count as books, and can't fit in the shelves, they have to live on the top.

Add: I wouldn't be that offended. I'd just shrug it off. Oh, and we have put a cap on things. If she wants more toys, more dolls, more things, then she's got to get rid of the ones she doesn't play with. I would not put any in storage. No, she's got to get rid of what she's got so she can get more if that's what she want. For instance, she loves XhuXhu pets right now, I keep finding them on sale. She wants a few Xhu-xhu playsets, but I have told her she can't until she's got room in her room to keep them. So she's giving toys away until I say she's given away enough that she can get something again. It's made a big impression to be told that I don't care if she has the money she's saved, I don't care if she is being good, too bad, so sad, she doesn't have room in her room, she's got to give something away.

Note, I've had parents tell me that my kids are going to be technologically disadvantaged because we don't have a lot of technology toys. I pointed out that the biggest techno geeks out there were playing with blocks and legos and stuff... they're doing fine with technology. So will my kids. I find it slightly more offensive when someone says "you're not doing right by them by not giving them technological toys."

Peanuts224

I'm fourteen and my mom plays doubles tennis on Tuesdays and Thursdays with one of her friends. Her friend offered her a free membership at this expensive tennis club as long as I baby sat her seven year old daughter when they played because she cant keep her home alone. This is my first tIme babysitting.. unless you count cat sitting, lol. Any ideas on what to do? I was a tomboy when I was little so I had different interests than any other normal seven year old so I have no idea how to entertain this kid. Ideas? Thanks in advance, sorry its so long. But I could REALLY use some help here. Tanka!
We're going to be at a tennis court, so no tv unless you want to count the various tennis matches on tv. Whoop whoop.
And no, lol Christopher, Im deffinately not poor xD

Answer
Most kids bring toys with them. I am going to assume she did. IF she brought something with her. Play with those things which she brought! If not. I suggest you invest in or find some free, or gently used toys like Barbies, Maybe some nerf guns.. Never knew a kid who didn't like that. And then again.. There is ALWAYS THE TELEVISION!

Our 7 year old daughter refuses to play with toys. She wants all these toys and has alot of toys but doesn't like to play with them. She said she gets lonely in her room playing by herself. She would rather go to bed or just sit and stare into space than play with her toys. I have never heard of a kid not wanting to play. we don't want to be mean and take them all from her but there is no point of her having them all since she don't play with them anyway. she said it doesn't matter if we give them away.

Answer
Invite some neighborhood kids over.

The rewards system is a great idea. Maybe a star chart for everyday he doesn't do it. At the end of the week, he gets to choose a reward?

I don't know what to get for my niece this Christmas. I don't really know what's hip these days for 7 year old kids. What toys do they like?

Answer
My 10 year old niece has been asking for a Zhu Zhu pet. It is a little electronic hamster and there are a lot of different accessories that they can buy and expand, so it's pretty cool. They're not too expensive either.

Any suggestions for a present for a 3 year old boy?

Q. I want to get him something he can do at my house when his parents come for dinner. We don't have a lot of kid toys. He has a 7 year old brother who would want to play too.

Any suggestions for games or toys that I could get?

Answer
At 3 NOT Legos (I saw that). They are too small for little hands and could be a serious choking hazzard.

Duplos (larger sized Legos) would be appropriate and a good idea.

An older 3 may also be entertained forever with Matchbox/Hot Wheel cars (mine did).

They are both pretty compact and don't require a lot of accessories or adult help to be fun.

How can i get my 5 and 7 year old to listen and not get in trouble?

What is the most effective way to get a 5 and 7 year old to do what they are told to do the first time? I have to repeat myself at least 5 times before they get the hint while raising my voice. They seem to seek out trouble instead of avoid it because they know the discipline they receive will not be as harsh as it should be. What is the best way to get them to listen and what is the best punishment if they don't? They are both boys.

Answer
I am guessing these aren't your kids if they are not your kids than put them in time out for 5 min for the 5 year old and 7 min for the 7 year if they are your kids punish them by taking toys away, putting them in time out, or a good old fashioned spanking would work.

Which is the best age for a kid to start to learn music in a more formal way?

I want my kids to learn to play a musical instrument. I always have heard that the earliest the kid starts is the better; my kids are 3, 4 and 7 years old. I want to hear personal experiences too, thanks!!!
My 4 and 7 years old kids had been asking me for musical instruments, however, my 3 years old boy has not show yet any interest in music but I would like him to learn something. Should I push him a little or wait some more?

Answer
The recorder is usually an easy instrument for child to learn to play because it isn’t difficult for small hands to handle. Many toy stores sell very inexpensive recorders but I would suggest you invest a little money because the sound is far superior. We got a very nice recorder from Courtly Music for less than $30.00. My daughter took private recorder lessons for 4 years starting when she was 7 years old. Originally the plan was she would only take recorder lessons for about 1 to 2 years and then switch to the flute but she liked her teacher and so she stayed with it a bit longer. She did eventually play the flute in the school band and for a time was playing 2 instruments.

I started taking piano lessons when I was 7 years old but I beleive children can start earlier; it just depends on their patience and interest level.

No matter what instrument your child decides to play the most important thing is finding a good teacher. A teacher who can develop good rapport which your child is paramount. If your child does not like and respect the teacher then you are wasteing your time and money.

I hope this helps. Good luck!
