I wouldn't allow my kids to watch dog/cat, cow/chicken or any of these subversive and
disgusting cartoons. I grew up with the Flintstones, Jetsons, Bugs Bunny and friends, Tom and Jerry, and the Disney classics. Futurama is supposedly not a cartoon for children, but the merchandising is, and that paradox gives them WAY too much latitude on TV.

It's a generational thing. Children of the 80s and 90s grew up watching cartoons and are now in their 30s, that's who those shows are marketed toward. Believe it or not, but many of the merchandising products that look like children's toys are actually designed with this market (25+) in mind.

The Simpson's was one of the first evening-time animated series. They gave the go-ahead for tv producers to make animated series for adults also, as the Simpson's was geared toward the whole family (adults and children).

If you're considering your children, look toward networks that are directed toward kids, not Comedy Central.

What was the one toy your friend had growing up that made you so jealous?

I would like to know out of curiosity. From what I've gathered already it was the age of excess, cartoons were mostly made to promote the sale of toys to kids. As for films sci-fi and fantasy were very popular.

Teen Movies were popular: Fast Times at Ridgmont High, Valley Girl, Sixteen Candles, The Sure Thing (a lot of the movies theme had to do with trying to loose your virginity).

There was a huge NERD theme going on in the 80s. There was NERDs Candy, Revenge of the NERDs, and Real Genius movies, Nerds in music videos like Beasty Boys Fight for your right to party music video. NERDS were everywhere T.V. Movies, Commercials, Music Vidoes.

On T.V. there were After School Specials: Movies that taught you to say no to drugs, say no to sex, teen parenthood, peer pressure, dealing with bulimia, etc.

Stand Up Comedy became huge: Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy, Andrew Dice Clay,

Does anyone remember a plastic toy from the 80s that had 2 hinges and could fold in 2 different directions?

It was an old toy used at parties and stuff to keep kids occupied. It would fold one way, then snap into place when closed to fold another way. Anyone remember what this is called or where I can find one?
