I would like to know out of curiosity. From what I've gathered already it was the age of excess, cartoons were mostly made to promote the sale of toys to kids. As for films sci-fi and fantasy were very popular.

Teen Movies were popular: Fast Times at Ridgmont High, Valley Girl, Sixteen Candles, The Sure Thing (a lot of the movies theme had to do with trying to loose your virginity).
There was a huge NERD theme going on in the 80s. There was NERDs Candy, Revenge of the NERDs, and Real Genius movies, Nerds in music videos like Beasty Boys Fight for your right to party music video. NERDS were everywhere T.V. Movies, Commercials, Music Vidoes.
On T.V. there were After School Specials: Movies that taught you to say no to drugs, say no to sex, teen parenthood, peer pressure, dealing with bulimia, etc.
Stand Up Comedy became huge: Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy, Andrew Dice Clay,
