i have a son aged 2 years, what sort of knowledge building toys can i buy for him ?

jay

I am living in Chennai, India, any knowledge building toys that makes the child involved and interested, which is availabel in india(if possible in Madras(new name Chennai) is what i am looking for. I am also looking for parental tips for my son aged 2 years and daughter aged 5 months.

Answer
The Lamaze Company makes excellent toys for infants, as does Baby Einstein. The Lamaze toys are great for sensory stimulation, which increases the infants vision and spatial awareness, attention span and motivates them to hold their heads up, roll over and want to reach and grab, etc.

Building toys are wonderful. My son always loved the basics: Lincoln logs (which are making a big comeback, now) and the Legos/Duplos. If your child is 2, he would be better off with just the Lincoln logs (made of wood and easier to put together, and not a choking hazard) or the larger Duplo blocks.

My son also loved Tinkertoys, but I think they may not sell those anymore, because they have sticks that may be considered hazardous.

Other toys that are great are puzzles, building blocks that don't have to be put together, just the colored, different shaped ones that your son can stack and build forts with. Those let him be creative and fun without making him stick to any kind of pattern.

You can find many, many things on Ebay! Lots of things you can't even find in stores any longer people will have on Ebay.

Other things I always encourage my students' parents to have on hand is plain paper and lots of crayons and markers. Let them draw and write and create. I don't like coloring books, because they limit their imaginations. Kids have very vivid imaginations, and they can create many magical things!

One word of parenting advice: whatever your child is doing, do it with him! He needs you to be an active parent, to help him see other ways of building, stacking, creating or just having fun. Otherwise, he won't learn as he plays, and he will just become isolated. Children need some alone time, but they need their parents, too. Even your daughter needs lots of interactive play time with you.

Have fun and don't be afraid to be silly with your kids! Every day should be a magical, fun day!

What measures need to be taken to boost India as a brand?( general view)?

aryan

Perception of India in general population in Europe is not so promising. What measure would you ppl suggest?

Answer
Consider the negatives first:
1. India is a violent and dangerous place. Recent massive media coverage on rape and the poor treatment of women is only the tip of an iceberg. It is a horrible country for girls and women although there is lip-service to the joys and sanctity of motherhood. And most police offices will not make out a formal report on any attack on a woman, for the obvious reason that there are simply too many of them. "It's part of everyday life - it's perfectly natural - it can't be controlled."
I saw in the paper recently that a 14-year old had been killed by his classmates who coveted his cellphone. They said as explanation, "It was a nice phone, we wanted it. And he died so easily - we didn't realise." No sense of regret or guilt - just "...we wanted it."
2. Corruption is endemic. Most people carry with them a sum of cash to bribe policemen, public officials, shopkeepers, bar-tenders, postmen, taxi-drivers, professionals such as lawyers, architects, computer repair engineers and so on. Politicians bride their electorates prior to elections: sarees to the women, toys for kids, seeds and tools for the men. The Anti-Corruption Bureau has always a series of allegations and police complaints about its own corruption. They all say, "It isn't corruption - it's just out-of-pocket expenses, administrative costs, sales commission, introduction fee."
3. Discipline is unknown. Indian mentality assumes that laws are to be broken; regulations to be ignored; health and safety to be in the hands of gods - not the civil service or the police. Is it legal for trucks to drive at night with no lights showing? No but everyone accepts it, including the police. It is legal to kill baby girls because they have "no value in the inheritance?" Of course not, but an estimated 25,000 are murdered at birth each year. Is it acceptable for motorbikes to travel the wrong way on any roadway? Not legally but everyone accepts it as normal, including the police. Is it legal to dump rubbish out of your car as you travel? No it is illegal but the Mumbai-to-Pune highway is a 100 km garbage dump of plastic bottles, plastic bags, food cartons, newspapers, used diapers and so on. And village roads are even worse.
4. Political chicanery. There are no free elections. Almost all politicians buy their votes or they are members of a ruling dynasty or they enlist the help of religious leaders. Most Hindu and Islamic parties will include deities or religious leaders in their election advertising. Voters, especially uneducated people in villages but also among the city professionals, will vote for the candidate and the party whose deity matches the one in their own houses. So a Sikh will never vote for a Parsee; a Hindu never for a Muslim; a Catholic never for a Protestant; A Buddhist never for a Hindu and so on . Bribery is rife [see above] and the country is run by a dozen or so "royal" families dating back before Independence in 1947.
5. Indian education is about pieces of paper; not knowledge and skills; and certainly nothing about employability or usefulness. Students learn by rote entire textbooks and the answers to previous examination papers. Cramming-colleges make fortunes every year by coaching students to cheat in exams. Most occupational certificates [electricians, hairdressers, car-mechanics, plumbers and glaziers, etc] can be purchased, not actually studied and examined. The All India Council for Technical Education, which accredits colleges and approves curricula, is currently under investigation for corruption: its officers apparently selling accreditations to rich college patrons for private "consultancy" payments.

NOW; how to present these "not so promising" aspects in a positive light?

Honestly; I don't know but I'll keep thinking and come back if anything comes to me.

Smurfs

Hi I am Anjali from India looking for old toys for kids of an organisation. If u want to donate ur old toys please send me. It will be a great help.

Answer
I don't think i could send them to you, but go to new garage sales, or maybe your relatives' kids have grown up and they still have their left over toys, ask for them to use it in your organization. Go to different stores and buy toys and stuffed animals on sales, there's a lot of places where you can buy toys. Maybe even try eBay or craigslist...

No Chance

The Industrial Revolution
China

Large Scale Farming like those salmonela incidents
The Ford Pinto
anything that accidentally explodes
toys that can get caught in your little kids' eyes
and anything other things that prove that Corporations do put profit above safety.

Answer
India doesn't exist either. FACT.

What are good simple American items to bring in exchange to a foreign country?

Going on a mission trip to Brazil and was looking for more ideas than just American flags and postcards. Also, I'd like to bring some simple toys over for young kids, but what could I get them that wouldn't be a choking hazard?

Answer
From my work in other countries I know that if you're in a developing area the kids love crayons and pens. Bring coloring books too. I'm sure that many of the people could care less about postcards and flags, to be honest. Collect old baby clothes before you go and donate them when you get there, they can always use clothes. When I went to India, I left most of my clothes there. In a place where the kids don't have a lot of toys you need to watch what you bring becuase they will fight over stuff if you don't have one for every kid too.

How do you raise a child to be indifferent to Santa?

Jamie's Mo

As in, neither "believes" nor "disbelieves." My mom never forced Santa on us, I don't agree with telling my son an old fat guy breaks into and enters millions of homes and is judgemental about who's "naughty or nice."

I grew up just fine knowing Santa wasn't real. So don't bother telling me I'm going to "ruin his childhood and destroy Christmas for him." Christmas isn't about how many toys you get, its about family and helping others IMO.

Answer
My daughter has known that there was no Santa since last Christmas, when she was 4,almost 5. She learned all about him from school, which sometimes bugs me since they teach them alot of nonsense, and beliefs i dont agree on. Like referring to the Native Americans as Indians. I had to explain to my daughter that you dont call them Indians, that Indians live in India. Anyways, about Santa. She came home and told me all about Santa. I explained to her that there is no Santa, that i(a single mom) am the one that goes out and gets her all her presents. She didnt have a problem with the idea whatsoever, and i think it made her opening her presents that much more gratifying for her and for me. After opening all her presents, she would told me, "Thank you mommy for getting me all these presents, i loved them all, and i love you so much!" Why give a fictional fat man all the credit? A couple days ago i babysat, and my daughter(now almost6) was talking to her friend(8yrs old) about Xmas. Her friend was telling my daughter about Santa, and my daughter simply told her that he wasnt real. Of course the other girl got angry and started debating, and my daughter didnt fight over it. But when she left, she found it interesting that her friend believed in him, and i told her it was ok that other kids believed in him, as long as she knew the truth.

What all things should I see for before buying a dog?

I am buying a choclate labrador from apet shop(reputed one) ....he is saying will take me to the breeder and he is aka or whatever it is registered...will give me my puppy with breed certificate and papers and first vaccination...
Plz tell me what all things I should do before buying it and what all things should I see for...and also I am gonna house train him only(advises needed)
And what is the best lab food available in india..

Answer
A play pen or a puppy pen are really handy as they keep your puppy safe and out of trouble but they still get to be near you.
Of course you will need a collar,
lead (light weight),
lots of toys (only give him access to a couple at a time so he doesnt get bored of them.)
Crate (optional) good for house training and to sleep in. make sure you get one big enough for the grown do and section it off for now.
food and water bowls
Kennel or bed

when buying him you want to see that he is healthy, check his eyes and ears for any problems, feel him all over checking for any lumps or bumps and fleas while seeing if he is happy for his body to be handled.
If he is with other litter mates, see how he acts with them. Is he always the first to eat and start play time etc? then you might have a dominant dog on your hands and have your work cut out for you. Dont assume that if the puppy is sleeping that it will be a calm dog.

For house training, if you have a crate, after a long period of time confined, take him straight out to the desired toilet area and say "go pee!" if your puppy does pee, make sure you give him LOTS of praise. Never punish your dog for peeing inside or rub his face in it for this will only make the problem worse while loosing your dogs trust.
After feeding, sleeping or drinking, always make sure you take your puppy to the toilet area and make sure you go frequently as they can not hold on for long periods (this time will increase as they grow)

You will want to socialize your puppy as soon as you have finished all the puppy vaccs (ask your vet for when this will be) at such a young age, it is a crutial time for them to meet new dogs and people. You want to introduce them to as MANY sights sounds dogs and people as you can a day, try 100 a week. Sights sounds and objects could mean reflections, vacuum cleaners, brooms, lawn mowers, and moving things like cars bikes and skate boards. You want them to meet a variety of people such as young kids to the elderly. You want them to play with all kinds of dogs big and small and you want to take them to as many places as you can so they can be comfortable in the world areound them. Also it can be really helpful if you introduce them to other animals like cats rabbits and maybe even horses or cows.

You will also want to do some basic obedience like learning sit, lay down, wait, no, stay etc and this can be taught as soo as you get it. look up videos on how to teach these if you dont know.

Good luck :)

How did Russia allow itself to lose half of its territory?

Dan

I'm reading a book written in the 1980s, and it speaks of the prospect of a break up of the USSR as though it were only "as likely" as a break up of the United States. And yet here we are, 25 years later, Russia is still there, but there are also 15 new countries. None of these newly independent countries seem to be doing very well for themselves.

Answer
After waiting for 25 year old view to prove its veracity & acquiring knowledge about the thought processes of such brains (efficacy of such opinions), why do ask the question "now"? There are people here (Y!A) who ask when the WW III is going to be, like asking when is the next Cricket match between India & Australia.
Most questions like the opinion you allude to, are really funny. It sounds like the heavy weight boxing title bout, War is a mere sport. Countries are like the wooden partition walls. They need to be dismissed with the wave of hand. There are umpteen Nazis (I wouldn't say Gun lobby) lurking here & there gunning down innocent, unsuspecting people & even preschool kids. What does it all show? Some of my people now American citizens, don't own guns. This attitude is deeply, ethnically embedded. Some people can't think of anything except disruption, destruction or some such thing. The sane society must keep them in control (it is easy as most of them are timid or even cowards). The best way to utilise their service to the society is to send them as marines to deal with Somalian pirates in the high seas of Indian Ocean, or into the high Hindukush mountains of Afghanistan to deal with the fanatic Mujahideen or their supporters.
Yet, I think something is wrong with the disruptive nature of such thinking. Even now I can't fathom how an 'Alien' (if you navigate through such questions in Y!A) is inimical, came here to destroy us and all that effing nonsense. Alien or no Alien, it is the thought process that goes into it, at the drop of the (celebrated) hat.
May be it is the failure to bring up a useful & peace-loving new(next) generation that is at fault. I know by now which ethnic groups give toy guns to the kids on their birthdays (never me). In our part of the country the compound wall is about four feet height to merely mark the site; but when I went to Delhi I noticed houses with eight feet high walls with upturned iron spikes securely fixed on them, that might hurt people in an accident. How do you explain that?
It takes all kinds of people to make the world. In the name of democracy we need to tolerate extreme, crazy, infantile views or those couched in wishful thinking.
