toddler friendly holidays/vacations?

BAMitsABII

just want a list of a few places and what attractions they have, i don't want a 10 page travel guide please :l
live in the UK, preferably wanting to go abroad

Answer
well if you want to stay in the UK, try glynn barton cottages in cornwall by newquay. there cottages designed for toddlers, which have a cot, high chair, bed guards, monitors, toddler beds, child friendly crockery etc. the site also has things to do such as a indoor swimming pool, indoor soft play barn, play room full of toys, tennis court, childrens play area and climbing frames, animals to feed and eggs to collect etc
and theres loads of things around like a beach in a 30 min drive, riding stables 8 miles away, and within 15 miles theres dairlyland farm world, crealy adventure park and within 20 miles theres a newquay blue reef aqaurium, newquay zoo and water world
http://www.glynnbarton.co.uk/fun_the_toddlers.htm

lapland - only a 3 hour flight and loads to do, such as see santa, snowmobile rides (children can ride in the things that trail behind tho i dont know what there called) reindeer rides, husky rides, tobogganing etc and im sure if you wrap your toddler up warm he/she will love it and love the snow
loads of websites for holidays in lapland although i recommend http://bookings.firstchoice.co.uk/lapland/

paris - i think its only a 2 hour flight and loads of stuff to do too, a main one is disneyland, theres another theme park like parc asterix (all designed for kids), sight seeing such as going up the eiffel tower although i hope your toddler isn't afraid of heights! go for a cruise on the river seine, kids science museum called cité des sciences et de l'industrie or maybe a zoo called parc zoologique de paris

or again just stay in the uk and go to butlins which has swiming pools, free fun fair, golf, go karts, shows and entertainment on all the time etc

hope i help and have a nice holidayy x

Getting a toddler ready for the beach?

Johnny's M

We are going on a 4 day, 3 night trip to the beach in the next few weeks. I'm a *planner* so I'd like to go ahead and start getting a mental list going as to what I'm going to need to take for Johnny (18 months). This is his first time going to the beach - and I've never really been to the beach with a toddler before.

Any suggestions on what to bring?
Spank me Grandmother - I like how you think.

(LOL)
And.......... No thumbs down from me!

Answer
ahhhhh, lil chubby cheeks is hitting the beach!!! us too we're going june 20th!! i took ayden last year though too when he was one and he HATED the beach!!! hahahaha.. it was too funny... he LOVED the pool at the hotel though!
definitely alot of sunscreen!!!
if your place has a pool i'd recommend getting one of them float things they can sit in, even the one that has the mesh, or netting overhead to block the sun! ayden had a lil truck thing and he loved it.. so much fun.
i'd also say get an umbrella for the beach... you wanna be able to get him outta the sun if you can...
definitely beach toys so he can play in the sand.. he might be a lil shocked by the sand at first cause it gets all over them and they don't know what to do!!!
those fishing hats are great for their lil faces!!
blankets
towles
ummm?? let me think?? i'm sure i can thing of a ton more!!
i'm sure you have a bathing suit for him but grab one of them surffer shirts they're great for the little ones, keeps them covered and great material for being wet!
i big bag to carry all this crap!

one thing i learned about myself when having my child at the beach is it is NO LONGER relaxing for you! hahaha i love nothing more than sitting on the beach in a nice beach chair and reading a book.. no more.. your constantly playing with them, watching what they're getting into, making sure they're not burning, etc.. hahaha.. i was sweating my butt off and i was covered in sand! ha..

oh another thing.. make sure you wear something versitile (spell??) something your comfortable in so you can sit without worrying that your stuff is hanging out! that you can bend, run, crawl, crouch, and pick him up comfortably in!!!
you'll be stressed enough with him you don't want to constantly be worring that your boobs are gonna pop out and if your butt cheek is out!!!! ahhahahaha...

What are some things to do with toddler?

Vordel

I've got a 2.5 year old. I find myself being bored with him. I really don't what to do with him. I'm wondering of fun and different things I can do with him. I was thinking of taking him to the beach to play with the sand, go window shopping, play ball outside.. Any good ideas?

Answer
My daughter is just barely two and she loves (and has for a while) going to the beach, you can get beach toys at the dollar store or cheapies at walmart. (watch for throwing sand), coloring, finger painting, get one of those plastic blue pools for like $10 at walmart or toys are us, put a couple inches of water in it and sit outside and let him splash, my daughters newest favorite thing is going to the movies, we've seen Shrek, Toy Story 3, and Marmaduke.. All very cute and she sat still through the whole thing, just make a big deal out of how you have this special day planned, take him for an ice cream, let him help you cook (make ur own pizzas) or bake some cupcakes, walk around a mall. My daughter loves stickers.. building towers with blocks.. teaching numbers or abc's

Please help me overpack for camping with a toddler?

Alyssa and

My mom insists on a family camping trip this summer with all my siblings and step-siblings and stuff. That is all well and good, but she wants it to be for 5 whole days, which is just excessive with a toddler in tow.

I'm not a fan of camping, we never went camping when I was a kid... what on earth will I need for my daughter and I for 5 days/4 nights of camping?

Please, help me make a list of every possible thing we could need. I'd rather have too much and lug it around then be without. My daughter is 19 months old.

Suggestions for bug spray stuff, first aid, clothes, all that, please.

Traveling with a toddler?

hellothere

My son is 2 1/2 years old. He still sleeps in a crib, but is small for a portable crib. We would like to take him to the beach this summer. But what should I do about the sleeping? I know he could sleep in my bed, but I would like him to sleep in his own. Are there any good traveling beds for toddlers? Any suggestion?

Answer
You can get toddler air beds with attached sleeping bag. They are usually about £30ish, and come with different designs that I'm sure your son would love (cars, toy story ect..)
I advise you get an electronic pump though, as blowing them up by mouth can be a bloody nightmare!

Taking Toddler Camping!

Teegan

She is almost 2yo. We went camping last year and she did really well but she wasn't even one and just starting to walk. Any suggestions on things that I can bring along to keep her busy when we're having some down time? Should I get a couple of new things to play with so she'll stay busy longer? I don't think I'll have too much trouble with getting her to sleep at night (knock on wood) but if I do any suggestions on helping with that? I'm looking for any suggestions and insight from anyone with experience!

Answer
>>Her Entertainment
Ball - 1 should suffice
Books - 3 old, 2 new (Some she can 'read' and some to read to her)
Toys - A few new and a few old
Bring a small play tent for her to play in.
If there is a beach there, bring sand and water toys.
If she has a favorite outside toy, bring that.

>>Bedtime
Blankets - Bring enough to put on the floor (padding) plus enough for each of you to sleep with.
Pillows - Bring 3 - 4
Stuffed Animals
Story - Have a few good ones memorized or bring a bedtime story
All of you should go to bed at the same time. So either let her stay up later or go to bed early.

>>Clothes
Shirts - 1/day + 2
Shorts - 1/day + 2
Long Pants - 2 pair
Socks - 3 pair
Shoes - 1 sandals & 1 tennis shoes
If she is in diapers, 1 pack + wipes.
If she is potty trained, 1 pair/day + 4.
Sweatshirts - 1 or 2
Swimsuit + Swim towel

>>Other
Bring shower towels.
Bring her soap/shampoo.
Bring shower shoes for her.
Bring her a pair of sunglasses and a hat.
Bring 1 - 2 flashlights.
Bring her plenty of snacks like pretzels, crackers, cookies, chips, fruit snacks, fruit cups, jello/pudding cups, granola bars, etc.
Bring her plenty of drinks; water + juice.
Wipes - even if she is potty trained - great for sticky hands.
Bring her disposable sippy cups. That way if they are too dirty to clean in the bathroom sink, you can throw them away.
If she is potty trained, bring her potty chair. This way if she is to far from the bathroom or is scared of it, she can use her seat.
Bring her sunscreen and bug repellent patches. These do not contain harmful deet like the spray does. Look for them at your local nutrition store.
Bring bottled water for her, don't rely on the water there.
Have plenty of hair ties/clips to get her hair out of her face when it's super hot and sticky.
Bring an umbrella.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GENERAL CAMPING TIPS

Waterproof your tent.
Bring plenty of s'mores stuff.
Bring a cooler full of dry ice. Fill it with milk, juice, meat, cheese, fruit, etc.
Bring bread and other foods to make your lunches and dinners. Also bring equipment for cooking over a fire.
Bring a tent thing and a table for your food.
Bring chairs and blankets for around the fire.
Bring stuff to start a fire.
You may want to bring bikes.

HAVE FUN!

DON'T FORGET TO BRING A WAGON OR STROLLER!

What do I need to take a toddler to the beach?

best toddler beach toys

best toddler beach toys image

I am taking my 2 year old boy to the beach for the first time. What do I need to buy and take with me?

Answer
From the time my daughter was born she has loved this. We always with out fail bring the following:

*hydocortizone cream ( toddlers are sensitive and the sand in the diapers get itchy)
*at least 4 towels
*shovels and sand toys( can be found at any local retailer)
*magnifying glass (to look at all the tidepool creatures)
*lots of sunscreen
*two changes of clothes
*a camera and film

*****this is an excert from parents magazine******

Sand and water are essential summer ingredients, and though they're a natural part of the beach landscape, they'll delight your child in any setting. "Playing with sand can teach a 1-year-old an amazing number of things," says Clare Lerner, a child-development specialist at Zero To Three, a nonprofit organization that promotes early-childhood development, in Washington, D.C.
Try burying toys and letting your child excavate them, or act as foreman while your toddler pushes trucks through a mini construction site. Simply filling and emptying his pail will reinforce concepts such as object permanence -- that things stay the same inside or out of a container. To cool off, splash at the water's edge, as long as there's little or no surf. Never let your child walk in water past his knees, and never leave a child unattended near water -- not even momentarily Or carry your child as you run close to the waves, and then run back before a wave catches you. For another water game, let your child see whether objects float or sink.

Why is my toddler scared of the beach?

Emma H

So we took my 19 month old to the beach and she was scared to walk on the sand so I picked her up and took her to the water and tried letting her paddle and she got really upset so we had to leave. Has this happened to anyone else?
By the way I am in Australia so it is summer!
Any tips for helping her adjust?

Answer
Sand feels strange to walk on. The ocean is noisy and huge.

I would recommend going there and setting up a blanket and picnic with some of her favorite foods, maybe with an umbrella to block some of the view and make a safe little area. Then just hang out. Let her get comfortable with the setting, eat some food, maybe even nap. If there are any birds, see about feeding them near the water. Help her feel secure by keeping a hand in hers or holding her. If she gets upset, go back to the blanket and have a snack or a juice.

Pick her up and hold her and let her watch others in the family play in the water. Point out the people playing in the water. Make it clear you have no intention to put her in the water, she's in your arms, it's all safe. :) But look at them play! Splash a splash! That looks fun! See if she'll let you chase the waves in and out, just the little ones that tickle toes. Sit on the edge where the waves come and dig your toes into the wet sand where the water comes up and giggle when the water tickles your toes.

Most importantly though is to just not put her in the water or on the sand unless she initiates it. Connect happy and good experiences with it, the food, relaxing, play, games, a special toy, a special feeling. And don't pressure. She'll love it eventually. My mom never could take us to the beach without us getting soaked, no matter how little water we stepped into. :P

How much television do you let your toddler watch?

best toddler beach toys

best toddler beach toys image

kittykitty

My almost 3 yr old is addicted to TV. Well not TV, her Disney DVDs; Toy Story, Monsters Inc. Mickey Mouse Beach Party, 101 Dalmatians, etc.

I've set a limit of 1 hour a day or 1 movie a day and her father doesn't agree with me. He thinks she should be able to watch them all day long!

Just trying to get a few different perspectives on the idea. And maybe some ammo in my back pocket for the next time mom & dad have a discussion on this matter.

Thanks!

Answer
Well, from what I've read...

Television on all day interrupts with imaginative play. (hey that rhymes!) In other words, a child who is playing teatime with dollies will stop to watch something on TV... thus having her playtime actually interrupted by television.

Television, even educational television, has been shown in studies to not be beneficial. Most of the time, kids seem to copy the behaviors more than anything else (so if they see Dora the Explorer yelling all the time, they yell. If they see happy, cooperative play, or quiet resolution in conflicts, then they are more likely to copy that.)

While some studies have said that a child watching TV for more than 2 hours a day isn't going to have the educational problems they originally thought, it's still a precursor to being overweight.

Movies though are a little better than TV. They don't have the commercials, you know what's on them, and they actually help a child focus for longer periods of time. Even so, as soon as they start playing something else, turn it off. If your hubby likes background noise, then music is better.

The thing is, your hubby isn't all wrong either. It's not really healthy to put too much emphasis on "don't watch too much TV, you'll ____" because that indicates that TV is to blame for any bad habits your child picks up. It also makes the TV a forbidden fruit, and as she gets older, something that she will fight with you more about (and since dad's on her side...) My mom tried it, believe me... it didn't work.

What DID work was her saying "If you do this, then you get this much TV time." So if we had been playing all afternoon, came in and cleaned up, then we could watch a few hours of TV before bedtime. If we read a book, we got a bit more TV time. If we did our chores, etc. She made sure that for every so much TV time, we were physically active. And made sure we had other interests (mostly music) that weren't very conductive to the TV (ie, if I'm playing the piano, then the TV interferes and should be turned off. If you want to play Hungry Hungry Hippos, the TV has to be off. If you want to play Chutes and Ladders... get the picture?) She took us outside and gardened with us, removing the TV entirely. The TV was NEVER in the dining room, and NEVER in our own rooms. We had to share with the whole family, and after a certain time of night it was turned off so the family could prepare for bed. She still had problems with some of us, but it was a better approach in my opinion.

What are some things I can do to make a long car ride with a 9 month old easier?

M.Warren

In the near future my husband and I will be taking a 6 hour drive to the beach our 9 month old can get pretty fussy if she's been in the car a long time what are some things we can do to make it easier on both her and us and just beach tips with a baby are welcome too!

Answer
It has been a while since I took a long car ride with an infant, but here is what I used to do.

-Try to leave early so baby will sleep for as much of the ride as possible.
- Have someone sit in the back if possible, to provide toys or food as needed.
- Stop frequently so the little one isn't sitting in a wet or dirty diaper for a long time.
- Pack a few things from baby's normal sleeping environment, this will also help if you are staying overnight somewhere.

I don't have many beach tips as I never took my little one to the beach until she toddler age and then I spent most of my time keeping her from eating sand and running too far into the water.
