Cheap Xmas present ideas?

priestesso

Christmas is coming up & it's going to be very tight...we are moving back to the city our family live in at the end of November.

People to get presents for include my grandmother (Who's birthday falls on the same date), my parents (who are helping us move), my partner's parents, our son, sister, brothers(27 & 16), two nephews(12,13) a niece, great aunt, aunt and my partner's grandmother. Those are only what we consider "close" family, because our family is very large!!

Answer
Umm I wouldn't buy for your 27 year old brother he's too old! if hes got kids your buying for them anyway. Grandmothers I tend to get a basket and put some bath stuff in (lots of shops do buy one get one free or 3 for 2). My parents and my husbands parents all get a bar or box of their favourite chocolates aswell as a top for both fathers, a picture frame with 9 spaces for pics which I put photos of the grandchildren in for each mum. Nephews at 12 & 13 give them money, they will appreciate it alot more than a gift! Neice dependant on age make up is good (again look for 3 for 2 or buy on eget one free and do a basket or box or get a little bag and fill that) if shes younger check out woolworths, and tesco who are both doing 1/2 price toys at the moment. Great aunt make shortbread, buy a nice box line it with grease proof paper and put the shortbread in. You could also put in homemade fudge or mints or if she likes jams and marmalades and your a good baker you could make her some of those.

What can I get my family for Xmas?

Q. Dad: Likes golf, can't golf due to medical conditions, "doesn't watch TV or movies anymore" when I recommended "Breaking Bad" though he mentioned John Wayne DVD set someone gave him for his birthday.

Mom: reads trashy generic novels she buys randomly at book store, tries to dress nicely

Wife: Doesn't do much, just wants to go home, but we just moved there and then back last summer because it was so awful, at least for me and our son. She has iPod, iPod Touch, Kindle Fire, and laptop

Under 10 Son: Only likes video games which we limit greatly and he's limited by the 2006 laptop he uses. No consoles or handhelds or phones!
A "hamper", where you put dirty laundry?

Answer
How about any of these to think about for any of your family members. You don't have to any get of them as a gift IF you don't want to, but it might give you ideas or something comes to mind.

Why are there never any kids playing out on christmas day anymore?

johnston1

This is so sad, ive lived in my area for 20 years, and up to about 3 years ago every christmas day kids would be out on the green with their new toys, not even the snow brought them out this year.
gone are the days when children are let out to play. I do live in London so maybe that's why. computer games must be the new toy.

Answer
I'm in Manchester and it's the same here kids play out in the street I live in most of the time but at christmas you barely see them and rarely on christmas day. I think they are all too busy now with their TV's, Wii's,Play stations,Lap tops etc. You never see kids with new bikes on xmas day anymore.

What type of Baskets should I make for Xmas?

top kids toys xmas
on Best Christmas Toys for Kids | Xmas Magazine | Scoop.it
top kids toys xmas image

Daddys_Gir

I am making home-made presents for my family and friends, and I am wondering if anyone out there has any ideas what to put in their baskets?

I have my Mom, Grandmother, Grandfather, Fiancee, And a few friends, I also have my Maid of Honor and her family.. Any Ideas from anyone?

I am looking for ideas, that are going to be less than 50.00 for each basket...

Answer
For the past 25 yrs I have made holiday baskets of every kind. Here is the basic plan and idea, Go to thrift stores to find medium size baskets with handles that come up at least 6 inches from the rim of the basket. If the basket has 1 or 2 flaws, these are an easy fix with a glue gun and probably will be covered anyway. I get most of my decor from thrift, dollar and craft stores that have sales (just the craft stores with sales). For time sake hire some kids around 10 yrs old to gather the wide pine cones off the ground at parks, neighbors with pine trees, etc. Its ok if they are wet as they dry out, they open up. When the kids bring the plastic bags with the pine cones, spritz some bug killer in them and tie them up for 3 days before doing anything else with them. So when the cones are debugged and dry, they will go in the bottom of the baskets. As you make each layer, put glue stick glue between each touching cone, just a dab. You'll only need 2 or 3 layers. You will need a lot of glue sticks so buy the big bags. List of items for the rest of the basket: 1. sets of mini christmas lights with 35 lights per strand. They come in clear and multiple colors. ($ store) 2. 1 figurine for the center under the handle (e.g Santa, Angel, pretty girl, child with toy, hobby, etc. 3. assortment of mini silk poinsettias (at $ store come in bunches of 6 )that you are going to cut off about 2 inches down from the petals. They come in a variety of colors, some with glitter. 4. variety of additional decor like a bunch of mini shiny presents, selection of small, various holiday, wedding, hobby decor. 5. Roll of wired edge ribbon, 2 1/2 " wide and 30 ft long ($ store) comes in multiple colors with or without glitter. NOW CONTINUED INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSEMBLY (bowl of a few ice cubes for when you burn your finger on the hot glue! its not a matter of if but, when) OK.... after putting cones in and spots of glue wait a few minutes and do a touch test to make sure they are secure.
Next: take the strand of mini lights and unwind them and plug them in to make sure they all light up. Starting with the end with the plug, go to the first light and one side spot glue cord by bottom of handle. Wrap strand around the handle about 3" between each wrap and when you get to the other side of the handle, wrap around base of handle once and spot glue. Go back and spot glue on cord 3 or 4 places on handle. Keep going around the rim of basket and spot glue again every 3 to 4 ". (you will need some type of clamp to hold the strand down in between the spots of glue. Proceed intertwining the light strand through the cones until it is fairly even covering the basket of cones. After glue has cooled, plug lights in again to verify all lights are working. The strands come with replacement packs. Now you can glue the main figurine in the center on top of cones. Next poke flower stems down in between cones and spot glue. Add additional decor and secure with glue gun. I like my flowers and decor to drape over the edge in the front. The basked handle is oriented side to side for you. The main center figure will face you. Now for the final step.... yeah.... start with taking the whole roll of ribbon off the holder and fold in half and cut so you'll have 15 feet per basket. Find center of ribbon and place on top of handle. Wrap handle in between mini lights and secure with spot glue at the base of handle on both sides. Continue with putting spots of glue on the outside of rim and press ribbon on until the ribbon covers around the out side of rim.
I like to find some thing that can hang down from the top of handle a little or glue a silk poinsettia on top of handle. Add your own finishes. Some times I tie a bow with the wire edge ribbon and glue it to the front of the basket. Play around with them and have fun. I use to sell mine for 25 to 45 $ a piece and some were gifts. Its so fun to place them around a room and you will need 6 ft. extension cords ($ store) to go from the light plug to the extension to the wall socket. They make wonder gifts that people use year after year. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN. I know my answer is long but it is so worth it.

How much do Americans spend on their pets at Christmas?

hazelwish

Does anyone have any accurate numbers on how much Americans spend on their pets at Christmas time? I need numbers for my essay, but when I Google nothing really comes up that I need. Thanks a bunch!

Answer
Well, I'm not an American I'm Australian, but I spend around $500 all together ( $250 each dog ) at Christmas time, sometimes I go over a little. I have two dogs .

I get them their own stockings and fill them with snacks and then I get them lots of toys and wrap them they actually unwrap them it's so cute, they are both toy freaks lol. Some of the toys from the pet shop are around $20 each so it adds up quickly. As well as toys I get them new collars and a new Xmas outfit lol.

One year I got my older dog a 18ct gold guardian angel charm for her collar with her name engraved on the back, and now I'm going to do the same for the puppy this year.

And on top of all that, I donate $200 to the RSPCA (charity for animals) in their names. $100 each per dog although that is not included in their Xmas gifts that's an extra thing I do every year at Xmas time.

This year I got them both a personalised ornament for the Xmas tree with their photo's inside.

I spend that much because I love my pets and I don't have any kids so I have that extra money to splurge on them :) Although my dogs are very spoiled all year long not just at Xmas time lol

What Do You Think To These Idea's For My Almost 3 Year Old Girl's Xmas Presents? P?

Kar

Peppa Pig's Adventure Buggy.
Moon Sand Sea Princess
Gloe Bear (lights up Different colours i think will be great for bedtimes.
Leapfrog Cook And Play Potsy.

Ok so i am still looking for other things but i don't want to go over the top with presents. :)
Thanks.

Answer
Three-year-olds have a penchant still for putting everything in their mouths, so you'd have to be careful with the moon sand to be sure she didn't eat it. I hear Leapfrog is good for teaching kids things, so if you want educational toys, that might be a good thing to have. :)

All in all though, a three-year-old is going to mostly be happy to have anything at all. They don't care what it is, so long as they're safe, warm, and loved. It's easy to see you love your kid, so I'm sure she'll love you and whatever you get her just as much.

I need some help with homemade clear glass ornaments?

Christine

I am wanting to make ornaments with those clear glass ornaments for family and friends. I need help finding items that I can put inside the ornaments for each person. I need to make two ornaments for my children's teachers, two ornaments for two babies, one for my husband(Hunting), one for a good friend, one for a grandmother(loves nativities) one for a grandfather(loves NASCAR and cooking) on for a brother in law ( NASCAR) one for a sister in law nine for library co workers and two for our new dogs. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
....Do you want to buy the small items to put in the glass ornaments, or do you want to make them?
....And not sure if the glass ball ornaments you're asking about have wide openings (or even open in halves like the older plastic ones), or just have small openings (at top) so that all the pieces would have to fit through that small opening (poured, rolled, pushed, or just small enough, etc)?

The ideas on this page at my site for teachers, babies, and men in general, could give you specific suggestions about those groups:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/gifts_men_teachers.htm
And you may also want to check out this page on making snowglobes (with "things" in them) too:
http://www.glassattic.com/polymer/outdoor_snowglobes_fountains.htm

For buying tiny items, you could look at places like:
...baking and cake supply stores should have all kinds of little things to put on cakes
...party stores will also have lots of little things, cheap

...toy stores for tiny accessories for dolls or action figures, or for tiny cars, etc.

For making any of the items yourself, you could use polymer clay or an air-dry clay (especially bread clay since you're making miniatures and want the finest detail)**. You can find loads of lessons, ideas, etc, at my site for almost all of those kinds of items (in addition to the page linked to above) on these pages:

Of course you could always just find or print out pics or cartoons*** of things like car racing, dogs, books, etc, and perhaps gluestick them to pieces of cardstock that you could then gently roll (around a pencil or marker) to insert in a small hole.

** air dry clays (homemade ones like bread or salt dough clay, or purchased ones like Creative Paperclay) and polymer clays (Premo, Kato Polyclay, etc.)

And you may also want to check out this page on making snowglobes (with "things" in them) too:

For buying tiny items, you could look at places like:
...baking and cake supply stores should have all kinds of little things to put on cakes
...party stores will also have lots of little things, cheap
...craft stores for the small items sold at Christmas, etc, for earrings or other jewelry (or regular jewelry "charms", items for tiny xmas trees or xmas villages--including nativities), little things for wedding decorations/etc or for garlands/artificial greenery decorations, or in the baking aisle, etc.
...item-buttons from fabric stores, etc.
...toy stores for tiny accessories for dolls or action figures, or for tiny cars, etc.

What is your 7-9 month old favorite toy?

lovelylady

My daughter will be 7 months at xmas and I want to get her a toy. She doesn't really have many. She does have an exersaucer already and a swing (that she HATES) and bumbo chair. Any other ideas?

Answer
My son loved this when he was little and my daughter now loves it - she'll be 9 months old in a few days. It's the LeapFrog Learn & Groove musical Table, costs about $40 and it has been great for both of my kids. They even have one at the pediatricians office. My daughter will crawl over to it and pull herself up and walk around it while holding on, she gets the music going and dances. It has a little pretend book at the top and when you flip the page it goes from music to learning. Teaches numbers, songs, alphabet, opposites, colors - it will keep her interest for a long time.
