This is my daughter's first Christmas, so we're still establishing some of our own Christmas traditions as a new family. My daughter is 7 months old by the way, but older kids' favorite xmas traditions are great too !

Oh December is a busy month here. My kids like going out with each of us (mom and dad) shopping for each of us in secret. They love picking a kid off the angel tree, someone their gender/age and preferably someone who shares their interest. that way they get a bunch of stuff they themselves would like and hope like heck they are making someone very happy. They like to shop for toys for tots, too. This year they have plans to visit senior citizens homes and read christmas books and take in small gifts they might like.
Aside from the giving, we do family stuff. Make gingerbread houses and tons of sugar cookies to decorate, drive around different neighborhoods throughout the month to check out the light displays. They go ice skating at least once or twice each december. We visit my parents on christmas eve,my in laws on christmas day and hop around to visit other family members and friends throughout the holiday break.
On new years they get together with cousins and we have a party. Champagne flutes filled with punch, confetti to burst open at midnight, games during the evening etc.
All day on christmas day- we have declared it pajama day. We sit around and eat and enjoy each other and the gifts and take turns napping and then get ready and go to the in-laws that evening. when we first declared Christmas day a lazy family day- we had some backlash from other relatives who insisted we must follow their traditions. We held firm. We needed *our* own family traditions that were good for us. :)
On Christmas Eve my 9 year old will leave reindeer dust out on the lawn and carrots for the reindeer. Santa gets cookies and strawberry milk and always a letter thanking him for the gifts he's about the leave. Santa writes back a little something.
