What do you/your kids take in your carry on bag on an airplane/car ride? Do they pack their own bag or in yours? Do you help them or is it all up to them?

What about suit cases? Who packs those? If they do, do you give them a checklist? Do you go over it to see if they have everything or if they forget something, it's their problem?
Also, how old are they?

Answer
My 10 and 11 year old boys fly twice a year to Florida and Oregon to visit their grandparents and they share a book bag with snacks, a pack of gum for takeoff, two books each, their DS ( but they usually don't use these at all) writing paper and a pencil/pen (I ask them to write every day and to write a paragraph on the plane about what they are experiencing right at that moment) and I always get them a mad libs, or crossword puzzles/word finds. They can entertain themselves for the entire flight with a book of mad libs. My 6 year old takes all of the above and a couple small toys, he loves his cars to play with in his lap. My twin 4 year olds have not flown, but if we did take them with us, I would pack snacks, books, and a portable DVD player, or my laptop with movies in them, suckers for takeoff, coloring books with pencil that has all the colors in one pencil. That way you don't have to keep track of crayons. We found them at Micheals. My oldest daughter loves to listen to music, so I would also bring a child's pair of earphones to listen to kids music. Lots of patience for the parents.

What consumer product can I use for my project that displays the clear differences in gender?

This is what I am expected to do:
The task here is to use the analytical tool of gender to examine a product / event / activity in our world. Toys, toy stores and catalogues, clothing catalogues, music videos, video or computer games, greeting cards (baby, marriage, wedding, kids birthdays) beauty product advertising, commercials, tv shows (for adults or kids), popular music, Disney movies, – how is gender evident and reproduced in these everyday elements of our lives?

Someone is using fashion magazines, someone is using a disney movie, and another one is using brats dolls. They are going to show in the magazine and on the dolls who the wording shows how these products are show common characteristics related to the female or male gender.

Answer
If you will go for a consumer durable product, you will never be able to find a product which is of use of any particular gender. For example, Scooty is meant for girls only, but I've seen boys also riding scooty.

The only option we are left with is to consider FMCG/CPG category. In this category also many products are becoming gender neutral. But even then many products has still boundaries (kindly note, we should not consider exceptional cases). For example, ladies bags and wallets are different from gents wallets. Ladies sandles are different from gents sandles. Undies are different from gents' undergarments.

I hope I have given you a direction meaningful for your project.

Wish you all the best.

How does gun violence affect kids in your communty?

Nena :]

I'm doing a paper on gun violence and how it gives kids bad messages. And i need some help. I'm wtriting that it affects kids in toys, music and the community. But I Need more help in the community. well thanks if you give me some ides. I'll be glad to help you out too :)

Answer
I think gun violence is still greatly misunderstood, or maybe, statistics misused, from both sides of the fence. I grew up in a family where my Father was a special agent (Law Enforcement) and he always had his gun handy. In addition, me and my Father hunted, so we had shotguns, rifles, and pistols in the household. There are quite a few households out there that have guns in them, however, if I was doing a study on Gun Violence, I would ask some questions regarding Guns and Education? I was taught early on how to handle and respect a firearm. That included the importance of locking your weapons up. I would suspect that you'd see much higher, significantly, gun violence rates and its affect on kids, when not only children are not educated at some level, but the parents.

How do you ensure that your kids get enough exercise during the winter?

With the winter we've been having (blizzard one day, rain the next, repeat) what indoor, physical activities do you do with your kids to make sure they'll sleep during their nap. My 4-year-old refuses to nap, and then is cranky the latter half of the day because he hasn't been particularly active the last few weeks.

Answer
We live in Quebec, Canada and go outside everyday, irregardless of weather. My 2 boys, age 3 and 5, are so active that it is the only way to let them be sane. Some days we are just out for 10 minutes but we always go. Once we are back inside they play a lot on hopper balls for kids and we use couch cushions for sliding. They also have an exercise mini trampoline that they jump on to music (with adult supervision).
Another great toy that we have is a play tunnel. It folds up for easy storing and the boys run around and crawl through it.

We also love having musical parades. Gather a bunch of musical instruments and then have an energetic musical parade. Hide and seek burns loads of energy!

On high energy days we head to the mall and walk around, visit the pet store, and at the end they each get to pick a ride

Have fun with it!

What are the 3 most important toys for a toddler ages 1-3?

Lindsey

I would like to know the 3 best toys for a toddler. Toys that can help them learn and grasp different sersory skills. Can you answer why those toys you picked would be best for the child?
Thanks sooo much!!
Would help me a lot!

Answer
If I have to limit myself to 3, this is what I pick:

1. It's not technically one toy, but a toy kitchen. Pretend play helps with vocabulary, social skills and story telling narrative. The little pots, pans, dishes, etc are good for motor skills.

2. A water table. For one, it will occupy them for HOURS. Pouring is a good fine motor skill and pouring from one vessel into another helps kids learn to conceptualize spatial concepts like volume.

3. Nesting cups. Stacking and balancing is a good motor skill. Nesting cups allow a child to stack just like blocks, but they also allow a child to experiment with size and again, conceptualize the spatial relationships of the cups.

There are others that are important, but those are my top 3. If you wanted a longer list, I would add:
Puppets for building narrative skills which is vital for pre-reading.
Art supplies for fine motor and color recognition.
Small pretend play sets such as little cars/trains, doll houses, action figures, Little People sets, etc for narrative skills and fine motor skills.
Dolls, household items, stuffed toys, doctor/vet kits, costumes, etc for pretend play to encourage imaginative narrative play. Copy-cat play is the primary vehicle through which kids learn.
Tricycle for gross motor.
Musical instruments (emphasis on rhythm instruments) for pattern recognition (both a pre-reading and pre-math skill), learning rhythm (improves math abilities because music is applied math) and vocabulary (the more you sing and particularly the more you RHYME the more your child is likely to pick up on new words and pick up on the phonemic relationships between words).
Balls. Lots of balls in lots of sizes. Great for gross motor.
Puzzles. Spatial relationships and object manipulation.
And books that your kids can handle without fear of messing them up. Pretending to read is part of print concepts which is a pre-reading skill.

What is a fun way to teach kids to clean up?

twinsmommy

My kids are 3 and they refuse to clean their room and play room. Everyone tells me I need to teach them early to clean so they will have those values. I know its a cop out, but sometimes its just easier for me to do it than to keep on them to do it for hours & have to go behind them if they do. Suggestions?

Answer
Help them, they are young. Stay in the room and help them while telling them step by step what to do. They are young so they don't automatically know how to clean up correctly.

Offer choices: Do you want to put the trucks in the toy box or on the shelf?

set a timer and play "beat the clock" see if they, with your help, can get the room clean before the timer runs out.

don't wait until it gets to be a huge mess before you get them to clean up, try and teach them to clean as they go. have a set rule that you have to put something away before you can take something else out.

make it a contest, who can pick up the most things (of course it should end in a tie so no one is upset.

make cleaning seem fun and not a chore, use a fun voice when you talk about cleaning.

Put on music and clean to the music while dancing too. There are tons of ways to make cleaning fun.

As they get older and they can be expected to clean on their own then you just have to make rules about it and stick to them. For example the room must be cleaned each night before bed, or each day after lunch and they can't do anything else until it's done. This is for when they are a bit older though of course.
