What do you/your kids take in your carry on bag on an airplane/car ride? Do they pack their own bag or in yours? Do you help them or is it all up to them?
What about suit cases? Who packs those? If they do, do you give them a checklist? Do you go over it to see if they have everything or if they forget something, it's their problem?
Also, how old are they?
Answer
My 10 and 11 year old boys fly twice a year to Florida and Oregon to visit their grandparents and they share a book bag with snacks, a pack of gum for takeoff, two books each, their DS ( but they usually don't use these at all) writing paper and a pencil/pen (I ask them to write every day and to write a paragraph on the plane about what they are experiencing right at that moment) and I always get them a mad libs, or crossword puzzles/word finds. They can entertain themselves for the entire flight with a book of mad libs. My 6 year old takes all of the above and a couple small toys, he loves his cars to play with in his lap. My twin 4 year olds have not flown, but if we did take them with us, I would pack snacks, books, and a portable DVD player, or my laptop with movies in them, suckers for takeoff, coloring books with pencil that has all the colors in one pencil. That way you don't have to keep track of crayons. We found them at Micheals. My oldest daughter loves to listen to music, so I would also bring a child's pair of earphones to listen to kids music. Lots of patience for the parents.

What is a fun way to teach kids to clean up?
twinsmommy
My kids are 3 and they refuse to clean their room and play room. Everyone tells me I need to teach them early to clean so they will have those values. I know its a cop out, but sometimes its just easier for me to do it than to keep on them to do it for hours & have to go behind them if they do. Suggestions?
Answer
Help them, they are young. Stay in the room and help them while telling them step by step what to do. They are young so they don't automatically know how to clean up correctly.
Offer choices: Do you want to put the trucks in the toy box or on the shelf?
set a timer and play "beat the clock" see if they, with your help, can get the room clean before the timer runs out.
don't wait until it gets to be a huge mess before you get them to clean up, try and teach them to clean as they go. have a set rule that you have to put something away before you can take something else out.
make it a contest, who can pick up the most things (of course it should end in a tie so no one is upset.
make cleaning seem fun and not a chore, use a fun voice when you talk about cleaning.
Put on music and clean to the music while dancing too. There are tons of ways to make cleaning fun.
As they get older and they can be expected to clean on their own then you just have to make rules about it and stick to them. For example the room must be cleaned each night before bed, or each day after lunch and they can't do anything else until it's done. This is for when they are a bit older though of course.
