Answer
How about puzzles, kids love giant floor puzzles. You can also start them on games, memory ones or candyland etc.. Playmobil makes great, durable play sets for both ages. Any toys that let your child's imagination flow free with interactive play will always be educational. Sometimes the simpler the better. Save the V-tech for when kids are on a car trip but not for everyday play. There's plenty of time for them to be looking at a computer screen.

Answer
depends on boy/girl. 2s like Barney, Wonderpets, Teletubbies. A lot of 2s, depending on the kid, don't have the attention span for TV for very long. 5s like Super Why, Arthur, boys like Spongebob, girls might still like Dora. A very precocious 5 yo might like Hannah Montana and Zach and Cody already, especially if they're exposed to it by older siblings.
Nick Jr. stuff is ok, regular Nickelodeon shows are for older kids. Most stuff on Cartoon Network is not for 2s and 5s. Most PBS shows are good for 5s; some are better for 2s than others.
Toys...big gender gap. 5yo boys like Legos, like to build, like to wrestle. You'll find the occasional girl into that, but not with the same gusto as the average boy. 5yo girls are great crafters and like simple board games (ie, CandyLand). Both are good for electronic toys like Leapster products. 2yos can't follow rules for games like CandyLand yet so you'd just be frustrated trying. 2yos will stay with one activity for a pretty short span, big legos for awhile, simple shape puzzles, Dora/Diego anything, but they are happiest with someone playing *with* them, not just being handed a toy and expected to know what to do with it.
