What does it mean when a toddler lines everything up?

It doesn't matter what it is but he puts everything in a line. puzzle pieces, toys, cars everything at some point will be put in a line. and I mean a perfect straight line. some times he might outline an object with what he is playing with. I can see he is advanced but didn't know if this was a part of it??
i forgot to mention he is 2 1/2

I would like to buy my cousin something for his birthday. I don't want to spend more than $10 as I'll be sending it. I noticed that all he has is small toys and a V-Tech game system for toddlers. I, too, didn't see too many books in his room. Any specific ideas, please?

Well since you can only spend $10 the only thing i can come up with is buying him 2 books.
