What are good stocking stuffer gifts for boys ages 12-14?

Q. Not too expensive, please. I can't afford all those electronic gadgets. Thanks

A. *They have the "lump o' coal" stocking stuffers at many retailers that have different gifts inside. Personally my oldest son collects cars. So what I bought last year was a pack of two that had the hotwheels inside.
*You can buy those small remote control cars ( I mean matchbox size small). Which seems to be a big hit with kids and parents alike b/c they are cheap and are not too space consuming. They can be found at walmart for about 3 or 4 dollars.
*Pack of Batteries.
*Finger Flashlights.
*One of their favorite cartoons or movies on DVD. I know it sounds expensive but relatively not. Walmart had ones like Spiderman 2 etc for 2.96.
*School Supplies( things you were going to have to buy anyway, its an even better idea if they are into drawing etc.) *You could get pencils, pens, colored pencils, etc.
*A Watch.
*Yo-Yo.
*Want to try something different and unique? How about going to a local museum or novelty store, you could buy some space food/drinks,lunar ice candy and funny gifts like talking pens or whoppie cushions.
*If they have a collection of some sort (rock, stamp, etc.) you could buy them something to add to that collection.
*You can buy those handheld games (starting anywhere from a dollar at dollar stores and walmart and on up. )
*Some cool Spy gagets/gear.
*If they like Harry Potter you could buy them some of those harry potter jelly beans in a bag for a dollar. They have many weird and different ones with burn toast flavor and many more. I bought several b/c they are very neat. They even come in a purple bag that can be reused. They also have choclate covered bugs, and Jelly slugs and range from 1.00-3.00.
*Socks.
*A Hat.
*I got Nextar 512 mb Digital MP3 players for 9.99 a few days ago.(TOYS R US)
*What about bath gift set ( or singles ) Like Axe or Bod. You can get body sprays, colognes, deoderent and body washes.
*Gloves.
*A small box of nascar shaped chocolate cars. (you can get their favorite racer if they are into nascar)
*Do they play a sport or an instrument? (get them something related to that, new knee pads etc.)
*If they already have some electronic gagets how about some accesories for it, like new earphones or skins.
*A book.
*A science experiment book.
*Video Games if they already have a system like psp, xbox, playstation etc. You could get them a new game or any one that you think they would enjoy.
*A new toothbrush.
*How about some nostalgic candy assortments like:
Candy Buttons
Candy Cigarettes
Wax Fangs, Bazooka
Jaw Breakers
Mary Janes
Candy Necklace
Cinnamon Fire-Pix
Atomic Fire Balls
Chick-o-stik
Sugar Daddy
Lemon Heads
Boston Baked Beans
Licorice Pipe
Root Beer Barrels

*Wallets
*Electric Toothbrushes
*Electric Razors (if its that time)
*Their Favorite magazine.
*Their Favorite Candies

I go to our Eveything is a dollar store, where I buy a huge stocking for both of my boys (you see these elsewhere for 15 dollars or more). They stand about 2 and a half to 3 feet tall. Not a bad deal for a dollar, and have good quality, they withhold all I pack in them and hanging up. Good luck and I hope this helps. Happy Holidays !

Are you more of a "toy" grandparent or a clothing, socks and underwear grandparent?
Q. Christmas time, birthdays, any other time you give your grandchildren a gift, do you give them toys or clothes and practical things?

My mother in law thought it totally disgraceful that I always gave my own kids toys and games. Clothes when they needed, but most often, toys and games. Now, as a grandma, I still give my grandkids the video games or electronic gadgets that they particularly want. Leave it to their other grandma or whoever, to give them the clothes.
What is your feeling on this?

A. We always buy toys for the grandchildren when they are young but when they get older then we give them a choice of a gift card or clothes.

What electronic gadget was the kid using in the movie "Journey to the Center of The Earth?
Q. In the current movie there is the scene near the beginning of the movie where Brandon Frazier's character's nephew is on the plane and he uses a portable computer unit to goggle some info.
In that scene Brandon Frazier does say the he didn't think you could use the internet on the plane.

A. hello
it was a psp

What game should I buy on Steam for $10 and under?

Q. The top 2 I am currently considering are Magic 2013: Duels of the Planeswalkers, and Super Meat Boy. ($15)

If anyone has either of those games, would you recommend me to buy it? Why?

If not, what game would you suggest?

Thank you!

A. You should get Super Meat Boy. I heard a lot of great things about Super Meat Boy and it got a lot of good reviews. Super Meat Boy scored a 9.1/10 by gametrailers.com.

Get these cheap steam games and they are:
# 1. Toy Soldiers
# 2. Gratuitous Space Battles
# 3. Super House of Dead Ninjas
# 4. Alien Breed™ Trilogy
# 5. Wanderlust: Rebirth
# 6. The Binding of Isaac
# 7. Shank 2
# 8. Poker Night at the Inventory
# 9. Zombie Driver HD
# 10. Scratches - Director's Cut

WTF? If its a cupcake or cookie and looks like a gun - its a gun now?
Q. Today I read about the 3rd grader who's birthday cupcakes were confiscated by the school because mom had put little plastic toy soldiers on top, and, a totally different story about another elementary school grader who had his breakfast taken away by school officials because his pancake dad had put in his breakfast was shaped like a gun.

The cupcake school principal was quoted as saying it was disrespectful to the memory of Sandy Hook to have toy soldiers on the cupcakes, and, it violated the schools zero tollerance policy against guns. As if confiscating a 3rd graders birthday cupcakes isnt going to cause him any issues from that, huh?

How do you feel? Are these school principals and teachers doing a fantastic job protecting our kids or what?
My First question - when did the 'Gun Free Zone' legally become the 'Gun Image, Representation, Effigy, and Likeness Free Zone'? Did someone pass a law I missed?

Second - do you think the action of taking these things away, pancakes and cupcakes, is more traumatic than the guns they represent?

And last - are we at the point were sane gun owners need to have a conversation with out local mayors, city counsels, and school boards about this kind of behavior and how to put a stop to it........... or do we give these liberals a little bit more rope to hang themselves?

Are at the point

A. In Maryland, where the boy bit his Pop Tart into the shape of a gun and got in trouble, one of the Republican lawmakers has proposed a bill that would not only stop administrators from punishing students engaged in innocent play (like the kid who threw the imaginary grenade while he was pretending to save the world), but would also punish administrators who attempt to punish these children.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/03/09/maryland-lawmaker-introduces-bill-after-pastry-gun-suspension/

I figure that should be the law across the country.

EDIT: Oh, and Truman, I noticed that you blocked me. I would expect that out of someone who doesn't comprehend the difference between a conservative and a liberal, and who thinks that there were Colt 1911s made before 1900.

What movies are soon to come out?
Q. Like disney pixar movies or just pixar or just disney things like toy story monsters inc and can someone give me a link of all of them
and it does not have to be sure just rumered or stuff just say that it was rumered though thanks :)

Which 2013 movie do you think will perform the best at the box office?
Q. Of all the potential blockbusters this year, which do you think will have the best box office run?: Jack the Giant Slayer, Oz: The Great and Powerful, The Croods, G.I. Joe 2, The Host, Iron Man 3, The Great Gatsby, Star Trek 2, Fast and Furious 6, The Hangover 3, After Earth, Superman: Man of Steel, Monsters University, Despicable Me 2, Lone Ranger, Grown Ups 2, The Wolverine, The Smurfs 2, 300: Rise of an Empire, Red 2, Percy Jackson 2, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, Paranormal Activity 5, Thor 2, Catching Fire, and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. I personally believe Iron Man 3 will be the top movie this year, because Iron Man is very popular already and it is likely that the films with The Avengers characters will get a boost from now on. The one that's likely to perform the worst is probably Paranormal Activity 5, because the Paranormal Activity movies are consistently getting worse and making less. What do you think? Thanks.

A. Jack the Giant Slayer,: not feeling it.. i think Singer has lost his edge as a diresctor
Oz: The Great and Powerful, toss up... Raimi is always good, but Franco as Leading man?
The Croods,: first I've heard of it, not impressed
G.I. Joe 2, : already delayed 9 months (was originally due the week before Dark Knight) and last I read being 'dumped' in February, not a known hot time
The Host, Solid Opening week due to TwiHards, seriosu drop after that
Iron Man 3,: block buster... only danger is how close the Next one is released to it
The Great Gatsby,: I don't think enough people Care about the source Material, and it was shot in 3D which might turn people off as superfluous for a Period Drama
Star Trek 2, : big numbers (like Iron Man 3 the only stumbling Block is what comes out the week after
Fast and Furious 6, Does it really nead #6? I can't see anyone more than the Fanboys showing up for this one, and the franchise as a whole didn't hold the top spot often if at all
The Hangover 3, : after 2 feeling like bad rerun I don't see long lines for number 3 unless the promos make it clear its 'original'
After Earth, : Shyamalan like Singer hasn't been that solid of late... and the synopsis from IMDb implies its Jaden Smith's Movie, and Will Smith is just there to help the kid out
Superman: Man of Steel,: I know I'm there on opening night... I think it'll do well
Monsters University,: after Toy Story 3 I see a lot of original fans coming back, not sure how the Kids will grasp a Prequel
Despicable Me 2,: similar to the first
Lone Ranger, : I think it comes down to Fans accepting Johnny Depp as A Native American (regardless of any really NA Blood he may have) and B a supporting character (this also assumes the Director doesn't turn this into Tonto The Movie
Grown Ups 2,: all Adam Sandler Movies play the Same as it is, why bother making a real sequel
The Wolverine,: I think it'll open High, but the Japanese setting will lead to drop off, especially if the next week sees another Big Name release
The Smurfs 2: Really the first one did well enough to Justify a sequel?
300: Rise of an Empire, Save for the Former Bond Girl this looks like a Syfy Saturday night kind of Movie
Red 2, It'll pay for itself, possible Justify a 3rd, but It's more of a Dark Horse than a Block buster
Percy Jackson 2,: I'll see it, but I think it's too far delayed (3 years might not seem like much but last I checked their based on 'Young Adult' Books based on Teenaged Demi-Gods (the actors were already too old then)
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, I see book fans showing up early... but I don't see it even Justifying 1 sequel let alone the full franchise adaption they are hoping for
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2,: not feeling it, 1 was quirky fun, 2 might be overkill
Paranormal Activity 5, : the horse is dead and now the ghost of the Horse if flogging its own corpse
Thor 2, respectable open, the new director and story will tell
Catching Fire,: hard to say... my understanding is that the Tone is completely different from HG... this may play well in teh book series but movie goers can be more fickle
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. : of course its Jackson i iddle arth

I see the Top 5 being Dominated by the Hobbt and Superheroes (I'm clearly not the demographic for the Young Adult adaptations so they Could surprise me)

80's or 90s animated short films i can only just remember but still creap me out?

Q. ok so i remeber very little of this short film, but hear goes, , all the caricters were drawn with very stark angles and it was about this .... i'm going to call her specal agent , dressed in black with 2 guns and this funky silver back pack. shes fighting through a complex full of gards there are bodys and blood everywere. the gaurd uniforms might have been blue .... shes also fighting other agents in black, one i think was some kind of kung fu expert, shes trying to steal a breaf case i think. the move also cuts to some big boss caricter who has been developing some kind of cemical thats in the breaf case... he hides what look like cockroaches in cuts in his fingers to sneak them in some were. the girl agents gets killed and a des jocky at some kind of HQ confurms that shes dead and detinates her back pack and activates a wee flame throwere thats torches her personal quaters....

another was of a floating villige of what i remeber as being people with almost eliphent heads, the main carector was the spear man on a flying boat that hunted giant sting rays,,, and as he walked round the village he keeps passing other "people" with weird spinning eyes walking like in a trance, and he overts his eyes as they pass.... latter he contracts the spinny eye desise and walk to a temple were he jumps into a hole and as he falls through the center of the floating island, he cucoons and turns in to one of the flying rays......

lastly .... and this one i can hardy remeber at all there is a kid and he has a pet or somthing , looks like an ant eater or somthing and hit gets grabbed by these vines and chocked and pulled in to the dirt roof.... ( really desturbing memory ) and latter you see the roof space with the boans of the ant eater a few vines and the radio that some other ppl are trying to contact the id on...... might have looed like the red and white pokemon ball thing..... guys ive been racing my brains for years , if you can help me ill me super greatful

What sorts of toys would be good for my 5 month old daughter?

Q. She has the basic toys and all and she's been spoiled with teddy bears but I was wondering if there were toys that could help her practice things such as hand eye coordination, grasping items and other mentally stimulating things.

She also used to love looking at things on her mobile and used to reach out to grab them but now that she's learned to roll over on her tummy she has no interest in it.

A. Congratulations! 5 months is a fun age.

Montessori toys are great for the skills you describe. The cylinder bell and puzzle ball have always been favorites here.

Leaving movable toys like cars and balls just out of reach while on their stomach is great fun too!

Things you can do now is put socks on her feet or hands and see if she'll pull on them. Give her a dry then a damp washcloth. Or a clean sock with rice in it. With parent supervision, you can tie a bell on a ribbon on her hand or foot.

Have fun!

What is the best toys to get my baby for his first Christmas?
Q. I want to get him a toy box for future toys and he won't mind getting that instead of a toy. I just don't know whats the best for toys. I get confused everytime we go to the toy department. The problem we have is that he'll be 1 year old only a month later so its hard to get him 12 month toys for his first christmas and then older toys only a month later. At this point he usually likes the packaging more than whats in it.

A. For my son's first Christmas, we gave him diapers. =)

Don't worry so much about the ages listed on boxes. My son plays with just about anything that we help him find interesting. Even if the toy says "18 months" there will be plenty that he will find interesting. Really you only need to watch out for small parts he can swallow or moving parts that can pinch. Other than that, find something that you think fits his personality- animals, trucks, etc- and let him figure it out in his own time.

Also, books are always good. Even if they seem old, they always grow into them. Kids love pictures, plus you can feel like you're helping them learn.

OH- and if they make noise, make sure they have an OFF button. Rule number 1!!!

Right now, my 13 month old son is walking around with a diaper and an empty bowl. Kids love anything they can learn to manipulate. But now I think I'll go help him play with some real toys- my break is over. =)

What type of toys are good to donate to the Ronald McDonald house?
Q. My company is doing a holiday collection of donated unwrapped toys for the Ronald McDonald House and I'm wondering what type of toys would be good. And what type of toys would not be good. For example I know that things that take a lot of room, or sporting goods probably would not be good. But what about games, puzzles, stuffed animals?
I checked their website but didn't see anything about donating toys.
Would these toys be shared by all, or would they go to the individual children? I'm guessing that it's probably not a good idea to donate stuffed animals if they are shared, but would be alright if it goes to an individual.

A. This list is from the Ronald McDonald website:
Toys

Because Ronald McDonald Houses serve so many children and families, we only accept new, non-handmade toys.
•Board games
•Stuffed animals and dolls
•Books for various reading levels
•Puzzles
•Video games (rated E)
•Movies (rated G)
•Balls and outdoor games

How to make some cash as a stay at home mom?

Q. I have no college degree. my boyfriend works a weird schedule, so I can't get a day or night time job. what would be a good way to make some money? (legally, no drugs or anything like that)

A. Can you write? Magazines are always looking for articles - every library has a copy of Writers Market 2013 in their reference section.

Can you sew? I do a nice side business making cat toys (I also pick and dry the catnip and design my own toys). You can retail or wholesale them.

Can you babysit? In home sitting does not require a visit from the city that in home day cares do (but you have to keep it under 5 kids a day).

Can you drive and have a car? Craig's List has several people offering 'rent a mom/rent a daughter/rent a helper' for people looking for extra help grocery shopping when they're shut ins, or for help painting a room or cleaning up the garage.

Can you walk? Dog walking is roughly $20 per hour, $10 per half hour (you can walk a dog 10 blocks in half an hour).

How much to charge @ neighborhood garage sale 2013?
Q. Hi I am 14 and want to make extra $ and my neighborhood is having a garage sale in May and i was wondering what to charge for these items:
- pants (old navy, the buckle, gap, target, aeropostle, american eagle)
- Shirts (American Eagle, Hollister, Disney, Aeropostle, Target, Gordmons, Forever 21)
- Toys
- Books (Hard back kids, chapter books)

Thanks!!

A. To get people to buy things at a garage sale you need to price them pretty low. The pants should be $1.00 to $1.25 unless they're almost new. In that case maybe $2.00. The shirts should sell for between 75 cents and a dollar. Toys if they're pretty used maybe $1.00 and the same with books.

Is this true that WWE is bringing back the Attitude Era or an era like Attitude Era in 2013?
Q. I heard something like THE REVOLUTION IS COMING and LIVE THE REVOLUTION.

A. No. The only way WWE could ever bring back Attitude Era and Ruthless Aggression is by dropping the Disney writers and bringing back more legends having less jobbers. With the amount of young kids watching the program today, WWE wont end PG. They'll just toy with us and add a small change once in a blue moon.
But if Lord Tensai can't even have "Lord" in front of his name without WWE changing it because of 1 crazy Christian then I highly doubt WWE will go back to being what it use to be, entertaining.

Is it normal to feel this way? Or do I need professional help?

Q. Hello, I'm a 14 year old girl and I would like if someone could help me. I feel so empty like there is nothing inside of me. I've been to the psychiatrist and on the first visit she said that she believes I have major depression and psychosis. Well at the time I didn't believe her because I was no longer depressed. The reason I went to the psychiatrist is because I see and hear things that other people do not see. My mom says that they are spirits, ghost. Well the doctor wanted to do some test on me and wanted me set on some anti-depressants. Well my mother didn't want that and accused the doctor of just wanting our money. (My mom also has depression). At the moment I'm on st.John's wort. They help with my concentration and with my mood swings. When I don't take my pill the tiniest of things would set me off. Like I have this friend.....Well let's call her "Nancy". I've been Nancy's friend for about two years. When I met Nancy I was hearing the voices and ect. Well at the time I wouldn't have these mood swings and thoughts of homicide, just suicide. At that time I self harmed but we're not talking about that. Nancy had this horrible friend who was two faced. They talked behind my back and one day my friend "Emily" told everyone that I brought a knife to school because I was going to stab them, I was at band at the moment and didn't realize that she had told everyone that. When I returned and went to p.e EVERYONE (Take note the school has about 50 kids and most are pre-kay) avoided me and when I walked towards them wondering why they were avoiding me they laughed and ran away screaming. I was really depressed during those times. Well eventually I managed to get through all that, I learned to not care. Alright back to 2013. Nancy is still my friend and she was no longer friends with two face (The girl from before not Dent.) Well I can tolerate Nancy most of the time but sometimes she just ticks me off. One day I was playing around with her and I jokingly said "Get out the way!" (She was in my spot during sign language) She KNEW I was joking, because I laughed after wards. She answered with attitude and rolled her eyes. My mood changing from cheerful to angry in a matter of seconds. I even took my pill that day! Nancy has family problems and she tells me them. She knows that I love to see others in pain. Some days Nancy avoids me and I know why. She even told me. "I'm not in the mood to be bullied." I can't help it, I can't help but be so heartless. I lack empathy. I lie to get my way and I put on a act to earn others trust. Some kids and teachers at school call me a dictator.(I'm class president.) But one second I feel on top of the world, calling everyone my toys. And then I feel sad and empty. My heart aches, my stomach twist and I feel as if everyone hates me. They do sometimes, they want me dead. I know it. Most of the time I'm very agitated. My mother won't listen to me. She says I'm just special and have the gift of seeing dead people. I'm also very paranoid. One time I refused to eat my dinner because I believed that my mother had poisoned it. I'm tired of feeling so heartless. I'm SICK of these mood swings, they throw my whole day off. I lay in bed at night refusing to sleep because I can't stop thinking and when I do manage to sleep I have nightmares. Last night I was sick of it all. I was on the verge of tears, my heart was aching. I felt so empty and hollow. But I couldn't cry, I couldn't get myself to cry. What I want help with is. Is it normal for a girl my age to feel this way? Or am I some type of sociopath? Was the doctor correct when she diagnosed me?
I'm sorry for any spelling mistakes or grammatical errors.

A. if a psychiatrist told you that you were depressed and psychotic--well then....obviously you have issues that need to be dealth with--st john's wort helps but I think you need real pres meds--go get help---talk to your school psyc./counselor etc.. see what your options are out there....

Is it normal for a 2 year old to only say 4 words clearly?
Q. So, my son turned 2 march 3rd 2013. & I've begun to get worried at his speech. Kids younger than him even talk more words and clearer. He only says yes,no,mama, dada. He never uses to words together like yes mama or such. He doesn't repeat words, and won't try to say words when I'm playing with him such as 'car' or 'toy'. Idk if he's just delayed or if there is a definate speech disorder? I'm a first time mother so could use any advice! Thanks.

A. By 2 he should be saying several words and making simple sentences at times like "Go bye bye", "Night night, mama", etc. It's okay if his pronunciation is not great at age 2. Many 2 year olds don't have all their sounds down perfectly.

Just because he has a speech delay now doesn't mean there is something seriously wrong with him, but you should get him tested by your state's early intervention program (it's usually low cost or free) so you know where he's at and what is recommended. In the meantime, just keep working on his speech with him (but don't let him know you're trying to get him to talk... you know how 2 yr olds can be!).

-Read to him often. Ask him to point at pictures that you name. Then point to pictures and ask him to name them for you. If he won't, then you say what they are.

-Make sounds with him. This can help his pronunciation. Make animal sounds, car sounds, train sounds, people sounds (mmmmm, uh-oh, etc).

-Ask him questions with 2 options and wait for a reply. If he doesn't, then you answer him verbally. Ex: "Do you want milk or juice?.... You're pointing to the milk. You must want milk. Let me get you some milk."

-Talk to him frequently. Especially about the things he's showing interest in. Ask him questions, make it a conversation, even if his answers are just head nods or pointing, get him used to having conversations. Look for ways to incorporate the words he does use into the conversations.

Good luck! Here are 2 webpages I would recommend:

running a child care facility- do we give in and let the kids bring in gameboys, baseball and pokemon cards?
Q. I am a director at a child care and after school care for kids up to age 12. We are in a small town in missouri. We don't allow kids to bring in cell phones, i pods, baseball cards or any kind of trading cards. Under our policies we state ABSOLUTELY these items are not allowed and if a child brings them in they will be taken away and not returned until a parent comes to pick the item up. No exceptions. Many of our kids did not like that policy and even some of our parents had problems with that policy. But we said, sorry that's our policy, those items aren't allowed, that's it. We are in a small town and for a while we were the only after school care facility in our town, so therefore we really had no competition. In March 2011 another after school care facility opened down the street and for the first time since about '96 we had competition and didn't think they could compete with us.- we were wrong! Within a month after they opened we had 12 different parents pull their children out of our center and enroll in their new center. We were shocked. When I was at the soccer field I ran into one of the parents who took their child out of our center and she said, 'i don't understand why you don't allow kids to trade cards. Kids like to that stuff, their not allowed to do that at school, but at after school care I don't see why you don't allow that.' She then went on to tell this new place allows children to bring in trading cards. They allow kids to have more freedom and that was their reason for switching centers and she also said other parents switched for the same reason. It seems like such a small reason! When we checked the other centers' web site, sure enough right there it said kids are welcome to bring gameboys (as long as they turn the sound down), baseball cards, etc. As long as it's not causing a problem, your child is welcome to bring these items in. When summer 2011 the number of kids at our summer camp was WAY DOWN!!! When fall came and the kids went back to school the number of kids at our center went down even more. In January 2012 we had a little more than half the number of kids from the previous January. This was also reflected in the number of people calling to enquire for information on our center and the number of visitors which was very few. Years past we had visitors all the time. I suggested to some of the other employees maybe we should consider allowing kids to bring some of these items in. Their response to me: absolutely not! They claimed that this was temporary and some families would come back and the other center was growing too quickly. We would be fine they said and we couldn't give in on our policies and rules. In the summer of 2012 we almost didn't have a summer camp- we were now down to less than half the number of kids from January 2011. In November 2012 we came up with a grand idea- offer half price tution for the first 3 months. We thought this would hit it out of the park. It brought in 8 new students, which was great but way below what we were hoping. We were thinking it would bring in about 20-30 new kids. Nope, just 8. Here we are in Feb 2013. The other center is just crippling us. Do we allow kids to bring these items into our center and let them have more freedom and just try it out. If our numbers don't go up soon... I worry we will be in serious trouble! Every summer we would have college girls come to work for us. This summer we can only bring back 2 girls. We don't have the number of kids- we don't have the need for too many workers. I'm about out of my mind... what to do. I would love to hear from day care directors, day care workers, etc.

A. I'm not a day care provider though I have provided services to children through social services, managing a Federal program for the state of Illinois and I have an MBA. Your day care has a severe communication problem. You were able to ignore it because you didn't have competition but that is no longer the case. You did not hear what the kids and some parents were telling you prior to the competition and I'm not sure you explained (you din't in your post) to them the reason for your policy. You can't tell adults with the ability to choose, "That's our policy because we say so". If you din't explain the benefits that come from your policy it just seems that you are out of touch. And it is nice to get some feedback from employees but YOU are the director and your day care is failing. The next conversation you are going to have with them is an unpleasant one about their jobs. If people are so dissatisfied that they left, it is going to be very difficult to bring them back and you have a limited population to work with, you are in a small town. To survive you are going to have to let the kids have those items, if you and your staff believe so much in the alternatives you offer the present them in such a way the kids choose them over the gameboys, baseball and pokemon cards. And not only are you going to offer the kids the option of having their toys, you are going to have to offer something the other place isn;t to get your clients back.

What was your favorite TV shows when you were a kid?

Q. Mine was Super Smash Brothers the old Mario cartoon, He-Man, Inspector Gadget, The Flinstone Kids, Goosebumbs, Gumby, The Smurfs, Transformers, and Alf. LOL.

A. Arthur && Hey Arnold.! =)

How do you feel about letting small children use your expensive gadgets?
Q. I don't like hardly anyone, especially kids, using my electronics (my 3DS, for example) -- they're not allowed to, in fact.

Why? It's because their hands are sticky/dirty and they are often not gentle.

I take good care of my things and simply cannot trust others to be careful.

It seems that it's seen as offensive if I ask others to be gentle, as if I'm assuming that they will not be.

Am I in the wrong here?

I ask because of a little debate that I had with my mom and step-dad earlier about letting a 2-year-old play on an iPad -- with supervision, of course.

A. I have kids and I didn't have a problem letting my children play with my expensive "gadgets". I knew that they'd be gentle and careful. I am more reluctant with other people's kids.

You are completely within your rights to refuse other people's children or your own children to play with your electronics. These are YOUR items, not public property. Even if you are overprotective of your items, it does not change a thing. If a child does accidentally break the item, most parents will offer to replace it BUT...but they will expect you to turn down their offer and get offended and/or angry if you don't-especially if it's a family member.

What are some detectives that kids may know?
Q. For a holiday program my church is organising, the theme is detectives. The age group is prep (age 5) to 12 year olds. For every day, a 'detective' will be comming to talk to the kids (an adult dressed up) For the 5 day week, we will need 5 different detectives that primary school age kids would know. We have already thought of Nancy Drew and Sherlock Holmes. Can u think of some other ones. Thanks.

A. The Hardy boys, Dick Tracey, Scooby doo, Inspector Gadget, Detective Conan.

has anyone been to COSI columbus OH?

Q. i need to know if there is an extra fee for anything once you are inside and already paid for your tickets. like are there any shows, exhibits, or anything else that requires an additional fee other than what your standard ticket pays for? also how is it for adults? is it entertaining for us as well? or is it more of a kid thing? what is your overall rating for adult ''entertainment''? because me and my husband are planing on going with our little one.

A. Hi there! COSI admission includes all of the exhibits except for Adventure and does not include movies on the Extreme Screen. We have ten permanent exhibits, live shows on the Gadgets stage live shows like Rat Basketball and the Electrostatic Generator that are all included in your admission. COSI is great for all ages with lots of science learning going on all over the building. Sometimes we will have traveling exhibitions which require an extra fee but the next one we have won't be until Fall 2012. Hope you enjoy your trip!

Fun stuff to do when bored?
Q. Any suggestions?
Please take note: no electronic gadgets.

A. Think about the end of the world in 2012! Kidding! I don't believe in that crap! Try reading a good book. I recommend the inheritance cycle (eragon, eldest, brisingr.) as it keeps you going for a while!

I'm looking for some fun things to do with 4 years old kids doing the day?
Q. maybe some games, worksheets,

A. Ask your librarian to help you find some really wonderful read-alound books.
Put on music and dance.

Make a batch of homemade play dough. Here's a great recipe:
http://www.modernparentsmessykids.com/2012/05/play-dough.html

Play hide and seek, play hide and seek with a stuffed animal (they try to find it), or hide a set of items (buttons, pennies, plastic coins, toy dinosaurs - whatever you've got!) around the room or yard for a "treasure hunt".
Draw with crayons.
Use a sheet to make a tent under a table. Play with flashlights.
Go on a nature walk or explore the yard. Most four-year-olds love to look for bugs or worms.
Collect some cardboard boxes to decorate and turn into forts, train cars, rocket ships, or almost anything else.
Go outside and blow bubbles or draw with sidewalk chalk.
Set up a little obstacle course around the house.
Bake cookies.
Play simple board games, such as Connect Four, Guess Who, Candy Land, and Hungry Hippos, matching games, or card games like Uno.
Build with blocks or Lego. If you don't have anything to build with, roll sheets of newspaper into long tubes and use masking tape to join the tubes to make structures.
Let them help with simple chores like folding towels and washing low windows.
Set up simple games using what you have on-hand, such as tossing rolled socks into a laundry basket or "bowling" with empty plastic bottles.
Fill a dish tub or other large container with water and place it on a towel to catch any drips. Give them measuring cups, funnels, whisks, and other gadgets to play with in the water. You can also add a little food coloring, baby shampoo, or ice cubes for variety.
Squeeze some shaving cream out onto the table. They can use their fingers to draw and write in the foam. It makes the room smell great and it wipes away easily when they are done.
Line up chairs in a row to play bus or train.
Tell stories together. Write down stories that they tell you so that they can make their own books.

Please skip the worksheets. They'll be drowning in them soon enough in school, and they really are a bore! Plus, it is hard to find a worksheet that meets each child's needs - they all learn at their own speed at this age, so the sheets are likely to be too hard for some and too easy for others.

Best educational gadget for preschoolers and elementary age kids?

Q. I'm looking for a nice educational gadget for my 4 year old son. I thought I was going to get a LeapPad but then I heard about the Innotab and Nabi and other tablets and learning tools and now I'm not sure. Some entertainment value is fine but I'm learning primarily for something my son will love but it's educational. Thanks!
I'm looking, not learning lol
Money is an object so I def can't do an Ipad lol

A. We got a leapPad for my son last year and he loved it. He is a pretty good reader now and we still use it. The great thing is you can always by more advanced books for the leapPad as he gets older so he will be able to use it for a while. My son can read really well now and it was probally his favorite gift last year.

The Tag reading system and the smart cycle are also really fun and educational items for children

Are teens showing signs of corruption these days?
Q. I don't think so but since I am in my 30s and haven't been by any local schools, I like to know how teens are doing these days.

Are the kids learning more with the internet age? I have a lot of hope for them, even with all the problems the youth carries early on. Teens always seem to have their share of worries.

A. Yes and No... I am early 40's with a son who is 23 yrs old. I have many friends who still have teenagers in the home.

Honestly, I am appalled at some of the things teens are doing these days...mostly because their parents don't actively monitor them, and teach them better. From sexting to nearly naked web cam chats...to shoplifting, theft/burglary, identity theft/fake ID's, problematic drug use, and trouble with the law for various reasons.

Teens have historically challenged authority, made stupid mistakes, and the like. It is a natural part of growing up and 'figuring it all out'. What surprises me is the ease and opportunity for corruption of young minds that the internet brings. I know 10 yr olds with iPhones, iPads, or other means to access the internet at will...and unregulated. Most teens know how to navigate easily, even circumvent parental controls. Driver's licenses aren't handed out just because a child wants one. There are benchmark requirements to obtain one...age, experience, insurance, etc. So, why aren't there such requirements in the average household for the internet? Lack of diligence by parents, and innocent spoiled kids who learn all they do from friends, internet, TV, movies, and such.

Young minds are impressionable. If a teenage honor student's friend from the cheerleading squad happens to 'show her the ropes' on social networking and sex-camming older guys for popularity purposes...well, is she going to do it? Depends on her instilled sense of morals and character...which is taught by her parents. It's the same as drinking and drug use. All a matter of choices and whether it's readily available...and what their friends are into.

No doubt the internet has it's good and bad. It can be an educational resource, a tool for communication, and more. But, on the bad side...concerning our children, it is full of predators, scammers, sex, violence, and sensationalism far beyond TV, video games and movies that are easily monitored.

I had a conversation with a friend this weekend who has a 5 yr old grandson. He woke up early, and his parents weren't ready to get up (it was extremely early in the morning...it was his birthday). He often grabs mom's phone to play games on it to pass time. Ok, I understand that. However, someone at one point showed him how to access internet on that iPhone and look at YouTube. His mother was shocked to find out he was watching pole dancing videos.. OMG! REALLY?

It can be an innocent thing where a child runs across something like this. But, teens often seek out 'cool' or 'interesting' things to share with friends...or sex things out of pure curiosity.

Go to the mall or to the movies some time. Look at how the teens act without parents around. Look at how the girls dress. Listen to the conversations they are having. See how people are so 'hooked' by their gadgets (phones, pads, etc). The internet is an 'alternate reality' with more interaction than TV and games. It is access to the world in all it's ways-good and bad, and vast.

It all boils down to responsibility, maturity, monitoring, parenting, morals and character taught at home.

Help! How do I get my 6 yr old son to pay attention in school?
Q. My son is 6, almost 7 and he has developmental delays. He was never classified as autistic or having PDD, all we were ever told was he has a speech delay. My husband, inlaws, myself and his teacher and speech therapist are concerned with his inability to pay attention. He daydreams and "plays" video games in class (moves his hands and fingers like he's holding a controller). The teacher hasn't said it but I think she's thinking ADD or something similar. I've talked to friends with kids similar ages and they all say their kids do the same thing so I know part of it is just my son being a normal 6 year old. The problem he faces is when he drifts he risks getting lost and not being able to grasp what the rest of the class is working on. How can I teach him to stay focused on the task at hand and how to bring himself back when he does drift? Are there games we can play with him? He does watch too much tv, and I know I need to do something about that.

A. Honestly, you seem to have a pretty rough idea of what you need to do. Just stick with what you are doing and cut the cable off, and maybe take away the games. Just for a few months and see if he improves at school.

Yes, you are right. You do have a normal six year old boy. You could also try using some other sort of methods to increase his attention span.

1) TV Time Needs To Be Trimmed - A child's attention span only lasts about 8 to 10 minutes. Funny that 8 to 10 minutes is how long a television program is on for until it breaks for commercial.

2) Games and Gadgets - When it comes to game systems, just remove them from the picture. Two ways to do so, A) Take them from him while he is either using them or is around or B) Move them into a place where only you know the whereabouts when he is at school.

Some might also suggest using educational games to help but I have found that t defeats the purpose of taking away games all together. Besides, he needs to learn to stay focused and not get better hand eye coordination. Maybe to hone some math or english skills, but not for what you're dealing with right now.

I hope I could be of some help to you.

Why do you think society has changed so much?
Q. Because of new technology?
Have we become more intelligent?
Or do you think evolution is reversing?
When we compare modern day society with the past centuries, what do you believe has been influencing us?
Do you think this change is positive or negative?
When I say society of course, I DO mean humans. Sorry if this confused anyone.
Society = group of people, I really meant us.

A. Well if you look at kids right here trying to get answers for their homework by asking random strangers to help (not to mention the whole google thing at their disposal), added to the gadgets and appliances grown-ups simply must-have to make life easier, it all leads to one conclusion = we are getting lazier by the day

I predict a future where pavements will be replaced by travelators so no one has to endure the botheration and hardships of having to walk anywhere...

What was the best invention for kids that made one crazy inventor and investor a millionare?

Q. Remember those animal rubber bands? The guy probably is at home in retirement on his pool, exercising, young, and living the dream life selling those animal rubber bands. I'm doing a project for Economics about the best product made for children because kids are particulary suckers somewhere at age 3-5 years old.

That woman who made a book for kids who are in stress I know its kinda funny but she made millions of dollars probably at home same as that animal rubber band guy. LOL

A. It has to be LEGO. A small Danish toy company with only seven or eight employees bought a plastic injection moulding machine and invented a 'self binding brick'. In less than twenty years, by the 1960s, the company was worth millions. No other invention: doll, clay, game, construction set or gadget, comes close to it.

Kids love it: they buy a few bricks and play for weeks on end. They start at 4 or 5 years old, and are still playing and collecting at 12.

There are compatible bricks, (such as Canadian Mega Bloks) but parents prefer the original brand, so it still sells like hot cakes. LEGO fans always seem to need the latest set.

Who would win in a fight between the Gadget Mobile or a Transformer?
Q. Would Optimus Prime kick the gadget mobile butt or what???
This is a serious problem I would to have figured out.
Any Transformer will do does not have to just be Optimus Prime.

A. You're kidding right? An alien biomechanical Cybertronian versus an earth made rust bucket with an attitude? The latter will soon be at the junk heap anytime Bumblebee kicks its behind.

What's the best laptop/notebook for a college kid?
Q. I don't need a hole lot of gadgets, just something that I can use word and excel and such, and net access. I just want something light weight, easy to take with me, up to date, and cost effective. I need it to last at the very least four years, and be less then four hundred hopefully. Any suggestions?

A. any laptop except mac.

apple laptops prices are too high given that other laptops will give you more performance at half the price.

Acer laptops are cheap but delivers performance. so does Asus,Lenovo,Dell,MSI,HP and Toshiba.

How did you change when you became a mother?

Q. unfortunately, I am pretty selfish. I fear that my maternal instincts wont kick in or something!!! Are there any former selfish women out there that changed when the baby arrived, if so please give me details. I would love to hear your stories.

I am 18 wks pregnant, I love to travel, shop, treat myself to spas, spend like crazy, spoil myself with electronic gadgets like the most current car to come out, current phones and new DVD blue ray (stuff like that).

A. Well on the up side, someone new to shop for! If you have people to watch your baby sometimes then it prob wont be so bad. If it is just you and only you 24/7 then you are in for a rude awakening. I loved to shop, I called it a sport, one I was damn good at! WIth just one kid I think you can still travel and do some stuff just bring them along. You prob wont have time or the interest to get the newest stuff. I still havent the time how to work the ipod I got two years ago!! I still consider myself a bit selfish but the kids come first always no matter what and it is kinda automatic. I didn't fall madly in love with the girls when they were born, it took a little time for me to get to know them and then oh boy, I am in love with them. I did however fall in love with my son from the minute I saw him. He is blissfull.
Don't worry you will be fine. It sounds like you have enough money to get help if you need it. Start looking for help now it is hard to find a babysitter or nanny you can trust.
Good luck and enjoy the ride!!!!

For health reasons, should parents buy their children more outdoor toys and less electronic toys and Gadgets?
Q. Should parents make their children get away from their TV's , computers, and electronic games and make them spend a certain amount of time outside day actually physically playing or working?

A. How about like they did in the old days, give them NO toys

"Go outside and push a hoop with a stick or something"

People had to be creative while playing a while ago, now everything is done for the kids, no wonder they're so stupid.

What electronic gadget out there will work?
Q. Hey, My daughter wants a laptop, My son (8yr old) wants an IPOD, I can't afford this stuff. But I was curious to know with all these new "tablets" out there and stuff would there be something they might like, I mean as long as they can access internet, play music and videos and surf the net.....that would be great, I know some of these new reader things allow you to read online books, but is that it?....Help....any suggestions, and if I could find something cheap that also works that would be great.

A. Try this site
http://www.bluemusa.com

they have a lot of cool gadgets and many things for kids, you'll love that site.

let me know, how it was.

How do you bring a car seat on an airplane?

Q. I am wanting to take my 6 month old son on a plane trip, seated on my lap, but do not know how to bring a car seat. I would prefer to bring my own car seat than to rent one at our destination. Are car seats allowed as carry on baggage or are they only allowed as checked baggage?
Thank you so much for your help.

A. I'm a former Flight Attendant and I fly a lot with my three kids and we always bring a car seat (when allowed).

First of all, check the rules of your company. They vary but if it's a U.S. company, and you bought your car seat in the U.S., it is probably fine to use on board. Most car seats sold there are approved to use in the cabin.

NEVER CHECK A CAR SEAT UNDER THE PLANE AS LUGGAGE. Airlines are infamous for abusing bags and it's unlikely that they'll make an exception for your seat. It risks being not only damaged but lost. What will happen if you arrive at your destination and your seat has gone somewhere else?

Gate-checking is better than checking it as luggage but it's no guarantee. You want to bring your car seat to the gate for two reasons. First, to use on board. This is not only the only way to fly safely with a baby but way more comfortable for both of you. Ask nicely at check-in if it's possible to have an empty seat next to you if the flight is not full. Make sure to have your car seat with you in case of a last minute empty seat, even if they weren't sure you'd get one.

The big difference is that gate-checked items, like strollers and wheelchairs, are loaded directly into the belly of the plane, rather than sent down the various belts under the airport. At your destination, they should be returned on the jetway, but be sure to ask. Some airlines send them to the baggage carousel.

To get your car seat through the airport, there are many ways. If you have an infant-bucket style seat that is part of a travel system, just use all that. Get gate-check tags for both the stroller and car seat. If you have a convertible (up to or past 40lbs) than you can try to attach it to your stroller. Use a couple of bungee cords and either attach it to the back or wedge it in the seat.

I used to simply check my stroller, put the baby in a baby carrier and pulled the car seat with a metal luggage cart. They actually sell expensive gadgets to do this (look up GogoKidz) but I found a simple metal cart works *just as well* if not better. Again, an extra bungee cord helps. My toddlers could ride in it.

Bravo for not using a car rental seat. They are dire. Relatives just visited and when I saw what their daughters were riding in... scary! A car seat is an important piece of safety equipment that could save your child's life so it deserves to be treated right!

Here are my totally non-commercial flying tips;
http://flyingwithchildren1.blogspot.com

Good luck getting it on board. The slight inconvenience of carting through the airport is more than made up for in comfort on the flight and peace of mind of having your seat reach your destination safely.

What kind of gifts do Vietnamese people want from the US?
Q. I will be visiting my family next month in Vietnam and would like to bring them some gifts. My mom (who's vietnamese) says that things that are distincty american are a hot commodity (like Levi's, etc) Are American brands big there? My cousins range in age from 22 to 40, male and female. What would be appropriate?

A. Don't bother bringing garments unless they are "uniquely" American. For instance, my wife's family has an excellent collection of Red Sox/Patriots game jerseys and t-shirts.
High end brands such as Polo, La Coste , etc. are incredibly low priced in Vn ($5 for Polo shirts).
I usually bring chocolate for the women, two bottles of good American bourbon for the men, and toys for the kids. Being a man, I also bring a box of Cuban cigars for our manly style enjoyment (bought at Tan Son Nhut or Inchon International) I travel to Vn often and whenever I see a good sale or go to a discount store, I'll load up on those kinds of things.
Viets on the whole also love electronic gadgets. I don't know your budget, but mp3 players and walkmans are pretty popular. One thing that is a status symbol in Vn is a cell phone. My wife always gets my new cell (from resigning my contract), and passes last years model to someone in her family.
Another really great gift is American food. My most popular request is to bring more jello and pudding. Everyone loves it.
I've also brought canned goods like white clam sauce, "unusual" pasta (multi colored elbows etc) and once, I even brought a live 10 lb Maine lobster.
Last, but not least, is flower and vegetable seeds. Even city dwellers can grow flowers and most Vn veggies are tiny by comparison to what Burpee sells.
Hope this helps !
