I have been researching, and haven't found a definite answer on what the hot toy will be for this Christmas. Last year was Zhu Zhu pets, and everyone was spending ridiculous amounts of money to get them. Any idea of what it is this year? Do you think that Justin Beiber doll could be a big hit? Thanks!

Answer
Well it could be but I doubt it. Justin Beiber is pretty popular but a lot of people in 2010 are wanting a lot of technology type stuff like ipads, iphones, video games, and similar. This page http://theperfecttoys.com/christmas-2010 may help you get a better idea of what toys will be hot for Christmas 2010. It really depends on the age group also because what may be hot this year for a toddler, isn't going to be hot for a 10 yr old and so on.

What was your experience traveling with your baby/toddler?

Any tips from your personal experience would be great. Can you also say what age your baby was the first time you traveled with him/her & how you prefer to travel? Etc...

Also, what are some items you would recommend (or you think are absolutely necessary) for traveling with a 6 month old baby? & Do you think it would it be better to drive or take a plane or train?

Thanks :)

Answer
We have traveled by plane and car several times with our infants and toddlers. Very often we visit my parents in Toronto during the winter break, and with seven children, we have brought our fair share of small children back and forth at least once every year.

My tips are pretty common-sense and are probably things you have already considered, but here they are:

1. Bring some plastic bags that are easy to reach during the trip. Why? Because children get messy and a garbage container isn't always close by. Dirty undies, half eaten goodies, wipes, wet clothes... all these things are likely to happen with little ones and you don't want to be puzzled and grossed out while trying to put these things away.

2. Make sure you pack medication in an easy to reach place in your bag. Prescriptions meds go without saying. Things like tylenol, cough syrup, aspirin for you, a thermometer and band-aids could be your life savers. I don't always use them, but the few times I forgot to bring them were the time I needed them urgently.

3. Do not stuff your bags or trunks with toys, coloring books and movies for the children. By the end of the trip you are likely to realize that most of the stuff you carried went unnoticed and it only robbed you of space and energy by having to carry them around. Plus, some things might get lost if you bring tons of things. If your child is old enough, involves him or her in choosing which toys will come and which will wait at home. If your baby is too little, bring a blankie or something to help him or her sleep and a small trinket to keep them entertained.

4. If you are flying and/or if it is desirable, divide the family into two groups for the trip. We do this when we need to be very practical. My husband or I leave first with most of the luggage and the older children, and the other one follows a few days later with the little children. It isn't the idealized image of a happy family trip with road-trip songs and fun, but it gets us where we want to go quickly and more relaxed. That way, we only have to focus on a few things instead of having to juggle everything at the same time.

5. Bring fresh, comfort food for the trip. We always bring our own lunches and fruits, regardless of the means of transportation. Something dry and easy to eat for the kids is my best bet.

6. If your child is old enough to understand, explain the logistics of the trip. Even if it seems pointless, it helps a little to run over the new things they will be facing (airport crowd, homeland security, long hours sitting inside the car) and also announce that potty time is going to be trickier than usual.

7. If you are traveling by plane or train, ask the travel agency about family-friendly seats. I prefer them. Sitting with other children keeps the kids happier and also spares us most of the anguish of facing annoyed adult fellow-travelers.

I love to travel by train, but the chances are rare and far-between. Driving is fun for certain occassions. If we have plenty of time to get to our destination and it is reasonably close, we will get the old suburban out of the garage and enjoy a family trip. I love the plane because it is quick, but the overall experience of airport, airport security and the plane itself isn't fun for the kids or for us.

Have fun and good luck with your trip.

What are your best tips for traveling with a toddler?

all_my_arm

We are going to Cedar point this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and to the Toledo Zoo on Monday. The drive down to CP is about 5 hours from home. We will have two toddlers at Cedar Point along with four adults and two teenagers.

Answer
What fun - lol; planning the drive around nap or sleep time is always a great idea. However, if that is not possible, try allowing everyone in the car to pick some songs to hear. The teenagers will be able to tollerate the toddler songs if they know they will get to hear something they want (within reason). Picture books, paper and pen, road games - car colors, snacks, lots of stops and some of their favorite toys are some things that have helped me. As a last resort, if you don't have any, find a friend or family member that is willing to let you borrow their travel dvd player and let them watch movies - Babe, Pig in the City is a decent family movie.

Good luck! And remember, family road trips are things that memories are made from. Think Vacation and RV - lol

******I am trying to get together a christmas list early for my kids but i am stuck, I need opinion's on the new leap pad 2 and the inno tab 2 for my 3 year old daughter, which one is worth the money?

****** I have a 7 year old son who wants a tablet but i don't want to spend that much money on it do any one know of any inexpensive kid friendly ones?

******and i have seen 2 walking baby dolls (baby alive) and my baby walk and giggle doll which one is decent you think?
and last but not least the my baby alive doll i heard that if you don't clean it, it will collect maggots, then i heard its because the kids put real food in the dolls mouth.

PLEASE HELP ME ASAP.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Answer
My son absolutely loves the new creativity app on the leap pad 2. It basically lets you create animated stories. You get to pick the background, props, and characters. You can add movement and action, and a dialog. You can use the camera to replace the face of the characters with a photo. We're both very happy with the purchase.

This tablet may not be out yet, but it seems like a good alternative to those expensive tablets. And it'll be conveniently sold at Toys R Us: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/10/tabeo-toys-r-us-tablet_n_1870597.html

As for the baby dolls, I think maintenance and sanitation is always important, especially if there's some sort of "food" involved. No maggots if you don't neglect, right? I think the baby alive would be most suitable: it looks less creepy.

Does Babies R Us Tell You That They'll Call Back After An Interview Or Do They Hire You On The Spot?

ILoveRavio

Okay...so I had a group interview at Babies R Us. I came in an hour and a half early. After the group interview, two candidates were sent home and four of us remained. I was amongst the four who had the 1:1 interview with the manager. This was part two of the interview (made it to the big leagues). They told me that they may call me after two days (48 hours) after the date of the interview or I could call back to check the status of my application. Does this mean that I am hired? Would they have hired me on the spot if they were interested or is this how the hiring process is? Anyone with any prior experiences?

Answer
Below are a few interview experiences shared by applicatants who applied at Babies R US. Good Luck !!!

Sales Associate Babies ''R'' - InterviewbSan Francisco, CA (Jul 2012 took 3 days)
Before I start, I just want to add that this is a newly built location. It's still in the process of being built so my interview may be different from many others. I applied online then a day after I received an email stating that they had no positions available for me. 2 days after that email, I received a phone call for an interview. Like many others on here, I researched this site.
When I got there, I was expecting a group interview but instead I got a 1:1 interview with the manager. He asked 3 questions, none of them being difficult what so ever. First question was to introduce myself. Next question, he as what I did in my previous job. Third, he asked my availability. Afterwards, he did all the talking. He explained to me about their goals as a company. He talked about the sales associates job, etc.
3 days later, I got a call and I was hired.
Interview Questions
What did you do in your previous job?

Cashier at Babies ''R'' Us-Interviewed in Fresno, CA (Dec 2011 - took 1 week)
I interview for Babies R Us in December 2011. I was contacted by HR to come in for an interview. Overall I had two interviews. The first interviewer was a shift manager and only took less than 10 minutes. He asked basic questions, such as what I was currently doing (school) and my future plans for after that. He asked about my prior work experience as a cashier, and then asked about my availability. 5 days later I got a call to come in for a second interview with the store manager. He asked the same questions, along with a couple scenario ones. I was offered the job on the spot.
Interview Questions
If a customer came up to you and asked for your help, but at the same time you got a call to come to the register because it was busy, and you saw a kid spill something on the floor, what order would you put these in as most important?
Describe a time when you did something that ended out not working your way.?

Cashier and Sales Associate at Babies ''R'' Us-Austin, TX (Oct 2011 - took 3 days)
I applied, they called me back for a group interview. It was at 7am before the store opened and only 3 of the 5 scheduled actually showed up.
We first told our names and favorite cartoon character.
Then we were asked to make a toy out of mega blocks as a team and then market it back to the panel of managers. Halfway through, they "recalled" all the yellow blocks and we had to rebuild without them. The trick on this one is they dump out a certain number of blocks for you to work with, but never say you can't go back to the bin they came from and grab more.
Then we did and individual interview with the panel where they asked what game system I would recommend for a 4 year old boy. I answer 3DS which was new at the time and they LOVED my answer because it's portable, has lots of games and makes them lots of money when they sell it.
They called me back a couple days later and I was hired.
Interview Questions
Your name and favorite cartoon character?.
They dump out a pile of mega blocks and tell you, as a team, to build a toy and then come up with how it's powered, what it does, the age range and the price for it. The time limit is 5 minutes.Halfway through, they come and "recall" one color of block and you're forced to start over.
A mother comes in looking for an electronic game system as a christmas gift for her son, he is 4. What would you recommend?

I'm going to my friend's daughter's 1st birthday party in two weeks and am looking for a gift that is a little different than just getting an outfit at Gymboree or a run-of-the-mill toy. Any ideas or suggestions on websites to check out?

Answer
Yay! I've been looking for a question like this one to answer! :) I think I've got a good idea for you. The product is called "Bebe Doos Perfect Ponies." It's a headband with ponytails attached. (No, not a wig, just an accessory.) The ponies are tied with colored bows of your choice and have a swarovski crystal in the middle. I know it sounds crazy, but at least check out some of the photos on one of the websites (the Facebook page has a lot):

We purchased these after seeing them on 18 Kids and Counting. (Jordyn Duggar wears them.) They are absolutely adorable! Our 10 month looks so cute in them and they really match her hair color.

These work for babies with not a lot of hair or a head full of hair. The creator of these says that the headband could even stretch to fit a two or three year old. It would be perfect for a one year old! This is a really cute and defintely unique gift! I really hope this works out for you! :)

Is there any place that you can go through to send boxes of items to needy international kids?

worrried

like,i remember in my old church we would send off boxes full of toys we didnt want anymore and clothing items and such to african children, and my brother wants to participate in something like this, but i cant really just send boxes to africa(or any other needy country) without addresses, does anyone know of any places around waco, texas that take these boxes and send them off for you?and give you feedback on what happened to your stuff?

Answer
This place sends to all countries, not just Africa. However you can't donate used items. The second link I've provided gives details of what you can send. The first link lets you put in your zip code so you can find out where you can drop off a box.

Check it out. You might decide you like it enough to do it. For those larger used toys and clothes you have - there are lots of needy children in your own community who could use them now.

Hi,
My younger brother's birthday is like in a week and I still haven't worked out what to get for him (he's going to be 8 if it helps). He asked for some spy gear he saw recently in a TV ad. And, as any kid of his age can't remember what the name of the thing was - does anyone know of a camera device that is able to transfer the recorded video to a watch-looking device that a kid could wear and see whatever is happening in a place where the camera's hid? Sorry if that's a bit confusing but that is how he described it to me. I tried to look for it over the internet but unsuccessfully.
If anyone heard of such thing could you please tell me where to find it? And if not - I'd still be grateful to anyone who could tell me of any children's spy gear that could be a good replacement...

Thanks you in advance.

if you were spending one week in england with four kids?

desmeran

what are some things you wouldn't want to miss doing with them?

in april. based in london, but could travel from there. kids are aged 6-12.

Answer
I'm going to assume you're going as a tourist.

As I recall you've read Harry Potter with your kids so I'd probably spend a day doing "Harry" stuff. Meaning stop by Kings Cross and seeing platform 9 3/4, the phone booth that's the entrance to the Ministry of Magic, etc. http://www.lynotttours.com/b-potter.htm for more suggestions.

I'd take a double-decker bus tour. You can get on and off the bus all over town which is kind of a fun way to see the city.. And my kid would enjoy riding on the open top. There are also options to take a open top boat up the Thames from the Tower to Big Ben.

Westminster Abbey. If you don't want to pay the entry fee, you can always go in for either a free organ concert or for a service. There is minimal wandering allowed afterward, but it's totally worth hearing the organ.

Take the tube through town. Learn what "Mind the Gap" means. Keep in mind that like New York, London's subway is not very handicapped accessible.

Changing of the Guard outside Buckingham Palace. You'll have to check the days they do it with fanfare.

The British Museum. http://www.britishmuseum.org/ Lots of stuff for kids too, and who doesn't like mummies and the Rosetta Stone? To be fair, most of the stuff in there shouldn't be there and may one day have to be returned to the countries it was taken from, so go see it now.

Stonehenge. It's so funny, you're driving along and suddenly in the middle of a big field, up pops Stonehenge.

Find Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens.

Hamley's Toy Shop. It's pretty cool.

Going in the London Eye is neat, but...overrated imho.

The Tower of London with the Beefeater tour is worth the money. The McDonald's there, as I recall, is the only place to pee anywhere near it. If you know your British History - especially the Henry VIII stories - it's much more interesting.

If you have Mary Poppins fans, going to see St. Paul's (where the Bird Woman feeds the birds) and running through Hyde Park and Mayfair might be worth doing.

And because it's 2012, you might want to check out the Olympic Village if you can.

EDIT: Sorry, I kept thinking about it. While it's not interesting for kids, it's kind of interesting for adults to walk by 10 Downing Street. Go to Harrods and go into the basement where the food stalls are. Oh. And if you want to get around the "tourist route" on public transit, look into the #12 bus. And if you want to travel, go see the Royal Pavilion at Brighton http://www.brighton-hove-rpml.org.uk/RoyalPavilion/Pages/home.aspx . It's....probably the most obnoxious building I've ever seen. And if you go to the British Museum, have tea at Bea's of Bloomsbury. http://www.beasofbloomsbury.com/

I don't know what to get my son for his 13th bday. I don't want him to have a cell phone yet, and no laptop because of unsupervised internet access. I know he's going to be a teen, and he wants some expensive gifts. I don't want to disappoint him. He likes basketball, books, and tech. (gadgets) Please help!

Answer
Basketball? How about some special BB shoes?

Gaming systems? Which ones does he have?

For tech stuff, when I was that age (early 60's) I built a radio receiver from a kit. Is there still stuff around like that? (Yes. See link. But that's not very expensive.)

Toy rockets were fun for me at that age. But he might need mom or dad to supervise. Same for remote controlled planes and boats.

Coin collection kit?

Wait 'til he gets to be 17. Then it gets much tougher.

What do you think about adults living like they are in their teens?

Friscat

These are people in their 30s, 40s, etc but are still living like as if they are in their teens. They dress in young, hip, ragged fashion, go for the current hype tech gadgets (gaming consoles, latest mobile, hot bikes/autos), value figurines, they go cruising the streets and clubs late nights, they date as in teen relations, basically, they do things normally associate with the teens. Are such lifestyle common and looks immature? Will these people get over this phase?

Answer
Wow, this question is messed up. Did you grow up in the 1950's? The days when people start families in their early twenties and settle down to a life of raising kids until they're old enough to play bingo and shuffleboard at an AARP social club are long past. People wait longer to have kids or don't have them at all. There are fewer traditional marriages and more separations and unorthodox relationships. These types of social changes enable more free time to people at an older age than previously and the things you describe are not 'teen things', they are simply fun things that you need time & money for.

People in their 30s, 40s and even 50s today grew up playing video games, listening to music their parents hated and dressing how they liked. You think they should reach some arbitrary age and suddenly conform to your idea of what they should be doing? This is not a 'phase', it's a choice, just as it is for teens.

I will agree that some older people wear clothes that are not the best choice for them, but I've seen plenty of size 16 teens stuffing their fat into size 10 pants and the same applies. If you've got cottage cheese thighs you should say no to any lightweight fabrics, regardless of age.

I hope when I'm older I don't stop having fun or start acting like my parents just because the next generation wants me to. You need to re-evaluate your teen associations!

What are some good learning toys to buy a toddler for Christmas?

My son is 18 months old and I am not sure what to get him other than what I already have. I wanted to get him something specifically aimed at learning, not just fun time.

Answer
It may sound weird, but at this age - EVERYTHING is a learning toy. Your child will be able to learn from anything. Kids are sponges at this age and absorb everything from how something feels, to the noise it makes, to the way it moves, etc.

My son always loved things with wheels. He would flip cars over just to play with the wheels - especially ones that you could pull back, and then they'd go forward on their own. You could see the excitement in his face when he figured out how to do this on his own. =)

I've read articles that said constantly giving your baby toys that are teaching, and learning things can actually be detrimental. They say it limits a child's imagination. If a toy is telling your child that something is a bear.. then it's a bear. Nothing more. It's not a magical bear with super powers.. or a bear that loves to eat vanilla pudding.. it's just a bear.

My son does have some learning toys, but I've found he doesn't like them that much. (He likes cause and effect toys like keyboards/pianos.. those pop a shape things, etc where you have to do something to make something happen)

Here's a list of the top 5 educational toddler toys :

How do you know when your baby is ready for the toddler bed?

Amanda

My daughter is 18 months old, just wondering when or how you knew when your child was ready for the toddler bed and how it worked out? Did you put up extra rails on the sides of it?

Answer
They're ready when they start trying to climb out or they rattle it or jump harder than the crib can handle.

My son is 2.5 and just switched to a toddler bed. He wasn't trying to climb out of his crib and I'm actually sad that we switched. I used to lay him down for a nap in his crib and he would feel like he had no choice but to go to sleep. In his toddler bed, he tries to get up a few times after I lay him down. I have to stay close and make sure he actually goes to sleep.
Mornings are weird too because they get up and sometimes it's earlier than you do. If baby gates still work for your daughter, I'd suggest putting one across her bedroom door so you'll know where to find her in the morning.

Most toddler beds are very low to the ground so you don't have to worry about them falling. We got a beautiful one at Toys R Us that's made of wood and has small rails on the sides. My son has been sleeping in his for a week now and not fallen. Put a pillow beside the bed where she could fall for even more peace of mind.

Just curious what you stay-at-home mothers do with your toddlers and preschoolers all day? Do you have some sort of formalized "curriculum" or schedule that you do with them to teach them various things? Or do you let them decide what they want to do? I stay at home with my two boys, ages 1 & 3, and I feel really guilty all the time that I don't do any sort of formal teaching or activities with them. We really don't watch much TV; most of the time, I just let them play freely. My three-year-old is especially into playing firefighter these days. Anyway, just wondering!
Thanks!

Answer
I let my toddler play what he wants. He goes two half days at a Montessori and we have two playgroups we attend a few times a month. I don't have a "curriculum" b/c I think that he is learning and mastering things everyday without a lot of structure on my part. We color, read, build blocks(his favorite), wrestle, go to the park. When they're so young, getting their attention long enough to do some sort of formal teaching activities is tough...not to say that you can't sit down with them and play educational toys and things. Don't be too hard on yourself. They've got about 12 years(at least) of formal education so let them enjoy being kiddos. Good luck!

How much television do you let your toddler watch?

kittykitty

My almost 3 yr old is addicted to TV. Well not TV, her Disney DVDs; Toy Story, Monsters Inc. Mickey Mouse Beach Party, 101 Dalmatians, etc.

I've set a limit of 1 hour a day or 1 movie a day and her father doesn't agree with me. He thinks she should be able to watch them all day long!

Just trying to get a few different perspectives on the idea. And maybe some ammo in my back pocket for the next time mom & dad have a discussion on this matter.

Thanks!

Answer
Well, from what I've read...

Television on all day interrupts with imaginative play. (hey that rhymes!) In other words, a child who is playing teatime with dollies will stop to watch something on TV... thus having her playtime actually interrupted by television.

Television, even educational television, has been shown in studies to not be beneficial. Most of the time, kids seem to copy the behaviors more than anything else (so if they see Dora the Explorer yelling all the time, they yell. If they see happy, cooperative play, or quiet resolution in conflicts, then they are more likely to copy that.)

While some studies have said that a child watching TV for more than 2 hours a day isn't going to have the educational problems they originally thought, it's still a precursor to being overweight.

Movies though are a little better than TV. They don't have the commercials, you know what's on them, and they actually help a child focus for longer periods of time. Even so, as soon as they start playing something else, turn it off. If your hubby likes background noise, then music is better.

The thing is, your hubby isn't all wrong either. It's not really healthy to put too much emphasis on "don't watch too much TV, you'll ____" because that indicates that TV is to blame for any bad habits your child picks up. It also makes the TV a forbidden fruit, and as she gets older, something that she will fight with you more about (and since dad's on her side...) My mom tried it, believe me... it didn't work.

What DID work was her saying "If you do this, then you get this much TV time." So if we had been playing all afternoon, came in and cleaned up, then we could watch a few hours of TV before bedtime. If we read a book, we got a bit more TV time. If we did our chores, etc. She made sure that for every so much TV time, we were physically active. And made sure we had other interests (mostly music) that weren't very conductive to the TV (ie, if I'm playing the piano, then the TV interferes and should be turned off. If you want to play Hungry Hungry Hippos, the TV has to be off. If you want to play Chutes and Ladders... get the picture?) She took us outside and gardened with us, removing the TV entirely. The TV was NEVER in the dining room, and NEVER in our own rooms. We had to share with the whole family, and after a certain time of night it was turned off so the family could prepare for bed. She still had problems with some of us, but it was a better approach in my opinion.

What games were there during the Great Depression?

I'm trying to make a power point for a class, and one of the slides include info on "Games of the Great Depression". Were there even games played during that era? If so, then was there some popular ones. What was their appeal then, and are any of those games still played today?
If anyone could answer at least one of these, possibly all of them, that would be super!

Answer
Since times were very tough and many kids also worked to help their families, games were "low cost games". Mostly played out on the sidewalk or streets; stickball with sewer covers as bases, etc; marbles played out in dirt, sidewalks, etc; anything with homemade balls and homemade toys dolls, trucks,etc.. Remember hardly anyone had cars so you really didn't have to worry about cars on side streets.
Played hide and seek; Ring- A -Lario; Jump the "Donkey, Horse or whatever". 2 or 3 kids started at the bottom bracing themselves against a wall,. Hands out against the wall, slightly bent over to form the base. Then one by one, other kids tried to get a head start and then jump on top, then another next to him/her. Then a kid would try to get on top of them. It was making a human pyramid & you couldn't really stay that way for long, with kids on top of you & then someone else jumping & shaking everyone not steady. Usually, you started falling over & then joined by the others. There was no sense to the game, really, but the laughter was continuous & contagious.
I learned about a lot of these street games when I was in college & did a paper on the depression & interviewed people. Also, some kids had junky, old bikes & bike riding was not only a delivery job for most but also a great sport as was running together through parks. Simple stuff mostly, thought up by kids. They went swimming locally in rivers, bays & some in lakes & oceans. Also, pollution was really not an issue then because testing & knowledge and money didn't exist for it to be an issue.
There were paper dolls with wardrobes where girls would cut out the dolls & clothing very carefully. they had little tabs that the kids had to cut around and then fold over the paper doll so the "clothing" would stay on. Kids took really good care of these paper people/ dolls. They would store them in boxes when not playing with them to keep them safe & in good condition. There were also a limited amount of crayons & coloring books that were cheap but mostly in cities & not available everywhere.
Games of "Jacks" played with small metal pieces and a small ball, You would place the jacks apart but close, bounce the ball & attempt to snatch a jack before the ball came back. Really, just doing the same thing over & over. If you were lucky enough to be around someone who played the piano, accordian, etc you would sing together for hours; sometimes just with other kids and other times with family members.
People in industrial areas got pieces of chalk used for other purposes but chunks were taken home & given to kids who drew on sidewalks and streets.
The appeal of playing games was of being together and having fun. No structured rules, teams or adults acting as coaches or judging. The games were played & thought up by other kids & passed on down. Kids played outside all day long. Times were different, very safe & kids looked out for each other. There wasn't any TV ( most homes did have small radios) Most homes didn't have telephones either & if they did, they were in the minority & didn't have private lines; they had "party lines". There were libraries, books and kids did a lot of reading alone & together with one older kid reading to the younger ones. Books were passed around. At night, friends got together and told stories to each other about all kinds of things; legends, tales, made up stories.
Boys with their dad's help made wooden "cars" that were made of scrap wood, old, used carriage wheels & nails. You'd go up a hill and just get in & ride down inside your "car". Later crude "steering wheels" would be attached & if lucky you had someone push you back and forth.
There were many, many other games, I'm sure. These are just some of the ones that have come to mind

What is this spin around riding toy from the 50's 60's called?

audrey

It is made of metal ,is about 5 feet wide or long as it were, has 4 criss cross seats ( like this--- X ) one child on each end. The little kids would sit astride each and hold on to their hand rail and push with their feet to make this ride spin around.

Answer
hmm could possibly be a kinetic energy machine...
although i doubt using little kids to power it would be legal...

Hi :) Here is a basic story of my life :P

I am a 17year old female born in Auckland, NZ. 3 weeks later my family moved to Whakatane, where we lived in 2 homes, one next door to Mongrel Mob members, and then later next to the community constable!! lol. When we lived next door to the Mongrel Mob family, one of their kids kept walking across our front lawn with a defiant attitude, so one day mum baked some cookies and made friends with him - he never did it again...... And when we lived door to the policeman, my older sister used to go over and play with his daughter. Well one day, she went over and played with the toys (the other little girl wasn't there) and the constable didn't realise and left home locking my sister in his house!! haha I don't think his workmates let him forget that one in a hurry!

I'm not sure where and what we did after that, but we ended back up in Auckland where we rented a house in Oratia, West Auckland. That was great as it was right next to an exotic plant orchard and there were heaps of feijoa, passionfruit and other yummy fruit trees. That was the place where my bunny disappeared to who knows where - I don't even know how he got out, there were no holes or anything, and where a huge native weta crawled up my mums arm while she was reading - poor thing, it was more scared of her than she of it! lol.

A few years of living there, we moved to the South Island, to Christchurch to look after dads parents house while they went to England for a few months. Probably the most memorable thing that happened down there was the times I tagged along with my brother (older by 2 years) riding our bikes - to school, the bike track, all sorts of places. It was great. I don't think he'd let his little sister tag along now though lol.

Then, we moved down to Wanaka!! Now that was cool. And if you ever get a chance to travel to the south Island, go to Wanaka/ or Queenstown. There is sooooo much to do there and the countryside is just beautiful. And the fruit! MMMMmmm yum! Unfortunately, it didn't snow very heavily, just one day it snowed a light sprinkling as we came out of school. That was pretty cool. The next day all the kids were having snow fights and piling snow onto this little hill outside the classrooms and sliding down. It was packed so solid from all the sliding down that it was almost as if it were ice - and very slippery! It was really cold that day, we were all huddled around the heater in the morning. Why are schools always cold??!!!! haha

We moved back to Auckland 7 years ago, and thats where we've been ever since (we moved back on my birthday so that was delayed and I was not impressed :P ). I have been to Australia, and am going there in a few months again. During my whole life, though, we have taken many trips around the country so to date I have only never been to Cape Reinga and Invercargill. I'll get there sooner or later :D. I have been to 9 schools in total (including kindergarten) and I am in year 13 (my last year).

Now that you've got me to thinking about it, I am very privileged to have had all these experiences, plus more, and I thank God for all the blessings he has given me. My family is not rich, but we make the most of things and somehow manage to get through by working hard and trusting God.

Well, that is my life in a nutshell....there is so much more, but it'd take a whole book or more to write it all. If you have any other questions about my life in NZ feel free to email me by going onto my Yahoo! profile, and click email me lol.

Hope I wasn't too boring. (but you did ask, and I was bored.... :D ) cya

How do you make Happy Meal Treats to take to school?

top kids toys under 1
on Best Toys for Kids under $50
top kids toys under 1 image

gensler97

I have heard of moms sending these to school before. They are individually bagged for each kid, with a treat that resembles a hamburger, fries ( I think it is those string chips ), a drink, and a little toy.

Answer
Are you looking for a little treat that is shaped like a hamburger and fries? Or are you looking for fun lunch treats in general?

Here is a snack combo treat that resembles a burger and fries. The "burger" is a cookie and the fries are like a peanut butter fudge. They are from quickcooking.com There are pictures at the website.

Cookie Burger
http://recipes.tasteofhome.com/eRMS/recp.aspx?recid=7956
INGREDIENTS
1 package (17-1/2 ounces) sugar cookie mix
2 drops yellow food coloring, optional
1-1/2 cups peanut butter chips, chopped
TOPPING:
3/4 cup flaked coconut
5 to 6 drops green food coloring
FILLING:
1/2 cup butter, softened
2-2/3 cups confectioners' sugar
1/2 cup baking cocoa
1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS
Prepare cookie dough according to package directions; add yellow food coloring if desired. Stir in peanut butter chips. Shape into 1-1/4-in. balls; place 2 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets. Flatten slightly with a glass. Bake at 375° for 9-10 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool.
Place coconut in a plastic bag; sprinkle 5 to 6 drops green food coloring into bag and shake until color is evenly distributed.
In a small mixing bowl, cream butter until smooth. Add the confectioners' sugar, cocoa, milk and vanilla; beat until smooth. Frost the bottoms of 22 cookies; sprinkle with coconut. Top with remaining cookies and gently squeeze together. Yield: 22 sandwich cookies.
"You may substitute your favorite sugar cookie recipe for the cookie mix; just add the yellow food coloring if desired and the peanut butter chips"

Peanutty Fries
http://recipes.tasteofhome.com/eRMS/recp.aspx?recid=7957
INGREDIENTS
1 package (10 ounces) peanut butter chips
1 cup sweetened condensed milk
Paper muffin cup liners (2-1/2-inch diameter)
Red icing, optional

In a microwave, melt peanut butter chips with milk; stir until smooth. Pour into a foil-lined and greased 9-in. baking pan. Cool completely at room temperature. Lift out of the pan and invert onto a cutting board.
Remove foil; cut into 3-in. x 1/4-in. strips. Fold muffin cup liners in half, pressing out creases; fold in half again. Fold point under; use as holder for fries. Use icing for ketchup if desired. Yield: about 3-1/2 dozen.

What are some costumes that are easy to make for Halloween?

Q. I am 13, and this is my first Halloween with two other friends. There are no good costume shops for kids around here, so I decided it'd be best to make my own. You can suggest ideas for all three of us, or one just for me.

What I have so far:
- Charlie Brown styled ghost (white sheet with two holes cut out for eyes)
- Fairy

Answer
I know!

1.evil/goth ragdoll
get a black dress and rip it up a bit and make sure its above the knee [kinda like a long shirt], get white shorts that go to your knee and get a white cloth and stain some "blood" on the white cloth, sew it on the black dress [like lob sided] and then get 2 buttons [or cut 2 red circles from a cloth] and sew it on the top corners of the white cloth, get red and white striped long sock or black and white striped long socks.make your hair in ponytails and then add some red yarn to make a ragdoll hair effect
basicly try to make it look like this

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41WcunAME5L._AA260_.jpg
as far as makeup just make your face a little pale and then add a chelsea smile [look it up its pretty cool] using red lipstick.n add heavy amount of black eye shadow

2.theres a fairy,
you just wear a cute dress and some yellow leggings and a pair of yellow wings :) get yellow, pink, and blue eyeshadow and so something cute

3.you can be a Vet,
go to a thrift store and i know that there has to be a doctor uniform somewere in there [in every thrift store ive been in there ALWAYS was atleast 1 doctor gown or uniform] get a pair of those things the doctor uses to listen to someones heart and put them around your neck like the doctors always do. then get a little toy dog or cat and get toilet paper and wrap it around one leg and stain "blood" on it, not to much just a little blood.

4.high school/middle school graduate
http://www.flickr.com/photos/daydreamconcepts/2959165744/
something like that, you can make your own hat
and just wear a purple dress and get a "diploma" by just getting paper and wrapping it around and tieing it with a rubber band

5.a cat
sooo easy, so do i have to explain?
black dress and buy or make some a tail and some ears

6.a crayola box [ i was this last year] just get some leggings [colorful leggings and wear them and wear a tank top as a shirt, those are under garments.
then somehow make a box using cardboard and color the box to make it look like this
http://www.flickr.com/photos/25264699@N06/2401773542/ [look at the box on the back]

have a happy halloween:)

What are the 3 most important toys for a toddler ages 1-3?

Lindsey

I would like to know the 3 best toys for a toddler. Toys that can help them learn and grasp different sersory skills. Can you answer why those toys you picked would be best for the child?
Thanks sooo much!!
Would help me a lot!

Answer
If I have to limit myself to 3, this is what I pick:

1. It's not technically one toy, but a toy kitchen. Pretend play helps with vocabulary, social skills and story telling narrative. The little pots, pans, dishes, etc are good for motor skills.

2. A water table. For one, it will occupy them for HOURS. Pouring is a good fine motor skill and pouring from one vessel into another helps kids learn to conceptualize spatial concepts like volume.

3. Nesting cups. Stacking and balancing is a good motor skill. Nesting cups allow a child to stack just like blocks, but they also allow a child to experiment with size and again, conceptualize the spatial relationships of the cups.

There are others that are important, but those are my top 3. If you wanted a longer list, I would add:
Puppets for building narrative skills which is vital for pre-reading.
Art supplies for fine motor and color recognition.
Small pretend play sets such as little cars/trains, doll houses, action figures, Little People sets, etc for narrative skills and fine motor skills.
Dolls, household items, stuffed toys, doctor/vet kits, costumes, etc for pretend play to encourage imaginative narrative play. Copy-cat play is the primary vehicle through which kids learn.
Tricycle for gross motor.
musical instruments (emphasis on rhythm instruments) for pattern recognition (both a pre-reading and pre-math skill), learning rhythm (improves math abilities because music is applied math) and vocabulary (the more you sing and particularly the more you RHYME the more your child is likely to pick up on new words and pick up on the phonemic relationships between words).
Balls. Lots of balls in lots of sizes. Great for gross motor.
Puzzles. Spatial relationships and object manipulation.
And books that your kids can handle without fear of messing them up. Pretending to read is part of print concepts which is a pre-reading skill.

Does anybody ever wonder about autism in their infant?

top kids toys age 9
 on Fun Girl Toys!
top kids toys age 9 image

jennifer m

I have a 13 month old boy. He is very healthy and happy. I always have this fear inside me about him having autism. As far as the milestones go he is right on track, but having friends with autistic children I often worry. It is becoming so common among children. What are some good signs? I read that turning wheels on cars is one, which my son does all the time. Does anyone elses infant do this, or display any signs of something you worry about?

Answer
Our son has autism and was diagnosed at 2.5 years.
The signs he had when he was a baby:
-Not making eye contact.
-Glaring at us, not smiling back when we smiled at him.
-Temper tantrums- starting early on. They were awful from the time he was 9 months old. At 13 months, he would tantrum for over an hour- AN HOUR...no matter what we did we could not get him "off" of what he was fixated on.
-No babbling at all.
-Lack of speech- he started to say mama at 12 months and then that was it until he turned 2.5 years.
-Aversions to change and to new situations. Taking him to the mall at X-Mas would set him off because of all the lights, people, etc. He was overstimulated. We attributed this to him having stranger anxiety.

Wheels on cars: our son's first fascination was with cars and trucks. If it had wheels, he was amazed. From the time he was about 15 months old, he was lining up his toys. I would play with him and purposely turn one of his cars in the wrong direction and he would see it after a time, and change it. He studied his cars and trucks. When he was 3, his fascination became Tornado's. Then, dinosaurs. We are on Lego's right now. He is building these amazing Lego cities.

The good news: Turning wheels on cars is normal. Our baby does this, and it's to see how they work. She is not autistic at all. There is a 10 year age gap between the 2 children. It's like starting over in every way possible because she doesn't have outrageous tantrums. If we take something away, we hand her something else (as we did with him) and she is fine. He was not.

He is 11 now and a delight.

I watched very carefully when she was younger and worried, but she is hitting all of her milestones on time. She is talking in 2 word sentences now- Hi daddy, Hi kitty, etc. She says, "See it..." she has a huge vocabulary. She is 16 months old now.

I would try not to worry as much. Enjoy your baby.

We knew something was wrong with our son when he was a baby. I couldn't get anyone to listen: 11 years ago, autism was considered rare. We were referred to a therapist because of his tantrums and the lack of speech. He was diagnosed at 2 years and 3 months old and started OT, PT, speech, and play therapy at that time, so he is doing well. He is mainstreamed in the regular classroom with an aide for him.

We tested his IQ at 8 years of age- and he tested out at 130. I thought, "Ok, that is pretty good...". Then I was told most adults top out between 100 and 120- and he was only 8! I cannot answer his questions anymore- they are very high level and they are sometimes hypothetical without an answer. He demands an answer: so we spend a lot of time googling. He reads college textbooks in science for enjoyment but cannot focus on say a Harry Potter book. He is an amazing kid!

Good luck to you!

A Rare Serious Poll From Me: What do you think about people owning Pit Bulls?

Abby Norma

The thought for this poll came from a story about a 9 year old Kokomo, Indiana girl who died today after being mauled by a Pit Bull last Saturday.

I actually had the link to the above referenced story pasted here, but reconsidered. What's the point in the specifics of this particular tragedy involving a Pit Bull? We've all heard them before.

At any rate, how do you feel about the ownership of Pit Bulls?

B.Q. > As background for your particular answer, would you consider yourself an "Animal Lover"?

Answer
Wow - Abby, what a question. I hope I don't go on too long about this.......by the way, I am an animal lover, but not to the point where I've turned vegetarian, joined PETA, and have animals as my only friends instead of people. That being said, I feel that pit bulls, like several breeds before them (namely Dobermans, German Shepherds, etc.) have gotten a bad rap. And here's how I know:

I owned a pit bull, Maxwell, from the time he was 5 weeks old until he died of kidney failure at the age of 9. You could not ask for a better dog than Max - he was playful, loyal, friendly, and kind to other animals. It's all in how you raise them up, just like children - if you raise a kid using hateful words, starve him, beat him, treat him badly & such, you end up with an aggressive, anti-social misanthrope of a human. Period. Same way with dogs - if you don't teach & prod them into over-the-top aggressiveness & attack behavior, then they don't become a "guard dog". Sure - they are loyal enuff to to their pack (aka family) to protect you & they will! They do tend to be a little high strung, but remember: they are a TERRIER inside a bigger-than-normal body. That's why they have shorter lifespans than most dogs their size. Honestly? I've seen more aggressive Yorkies & West Highlands than my Max.

That dog I had let a blind, toothless toy poodle, and later a Brussels Griffon boss him around. The dog I raised didn't kill my friend's Amazon parrot when we forgot to close the cage & Petey decided he wanted to play with Max's toys. The pit bull I had let an orphan kitten adopt him as a "mother", not even complaining when Sammy tried to nurse. Now Max DID hog the bed, had horrible gas @ times & had more "human" ailments than a canine should have (post nasal drip, food allergies, IBS), but he was a fine dog. He only ever bit one person that I know of & that was Tony - who wasn't really welcome in our house, aggresively tried to pet Max & smelled bad to boot.

So - those are my thoughts on pit bulls - I love them & would have another one in a heartbeat if I had my own place. I miss Max most every day. I truly believe that any dog of ANY breed can be a kind, loving companion if they are raised in the right manner. There are NO "bad seeds" in dog breeds, in my opinion. Hope I wasn't too long-winded, there. But I had to write it all - thanks for listening.

What a coincidence. I'm a hot chick and my mom has NEVER worked at Toys R Us. Hmmmm interesting....

what to get my 8 year old who wants to become a large animal veterinarian?

redhed

I bought her a visible horse for her last Christmas. It was her FAVORITE present! I want to encourage her dream. Any parent, or grandparents, out there who have such a child, or similar yet with a different aim, Please advise us where to look on the web. Thank You!

Answer
I guess the best website would be animalplanet.com to look for presents. Also, look at the humane society and of course amazon.com.

I'm an avid animal lover. I have 2 dogs and 5 guinea pigs! I grew up on a farm and wanted to become a vet assistant after high school but couldn't find a school in rural PA.

Why do schools push kids so hard these days?

best tech gadgets for kids image
Q. Why do they expect them to be so smart, they push subjects so fast, then a struggling kid falls behind, and right away they want them to be on medication, or hold them back! What is the rush, why can't they pace subjects so the kids have a fighting chance?
All really good answers, thanks but whatever happened to kids just being kids, they have a stressful future ahead of them, why stress them out now?

Answer
You people don't know how stressful it is because YOU grew up in simpler times where they just asked you what 4+3 is.

I will copy and paste my answer from a similar topic:

For you misguided souls... Keep in mind that an excess of anything is NOT good for you. Education isn't what it used to be when we grew up in simpler times. Kindergarteners have homework, first grade stuff is being taught in preschool, and fourth graders learn the stuff they shouldn't learn until middle school. That's ridiculous. And there comes the cutbacks on recess and PE(and expect the children to sit still for ever long hours-if they can't do that, they solve it by drugging them-and how dare they blame child obesity rates when they ARE part of the problem), and standardized testing for second graders.

A child does not grasp logical reasoning until the ages of at least 6-7 before they should be introduced to formal education. And numerous studies agree that in the years before that, play and sensory is most important in development to begin logical reasoning. Now it's seem this stage is skipped altogether. And standardized testing is virtually child abuse for second graders as a medium "of knowing whether they can read and do math" as a excuse for overzealous educators. Sure, they might be the best in filling in bubbles, but can they learn and if so, are the tests accurate in any way other than testing memorization. Because anyone can memorize a bunch of stuff, color in bubbles, without the slightest hint of what actually's going on. It's virtually child abuse because those who can't handle the stress face emotional suffering and the fear and disgrace of failure. And get this, the teacher's manual for testing second graders explain how to clean vomit(kids throw up from stress) from the scantrons so they are readable. And they feel nothing but apathy for the poor child.

One of the reasons for the radical change for the worse in education is the whole concept of why test scores and performance remains low. And to supplement this deficiency, there comes the half-assedly thrown in one-size-fits-all policy known as No Child Left Behind that addresses not one bit on how to improve education for everyone, how to reform issues(overcrowding, maintenance, order) and being able to conform to various learning styles for the kids. As a result, schools have to do anything possible under unreasonable pressure and circumstance to boost their percentages. And they do this by either dumbing down the standards or setting the bar too high and loading kids up with homework.

The second big reason apart from the idiotic No Child Left Behind law is an increasingly competitive world. Now this I especially hate. An increasingly competitve world equals a just as competitive society on the home front. Thus, people are obsessed with achievement and work and the economy. Is the frenetic pace for the better? Absolutely not. With what people expect out of kids today, the US is still falling behind in education. And other countries don't repress or overload their kids' learning the way it's taking place here. You can come up with as many tests and as many cool hi-tech gadgets and incentives you want, but the only way to make education any better is to fix the problems such as poor funding, overcrowding, crime, maintenance, then teach BETTER, not MORE in a lighter but more consistent manner. If kids aren't liking it, they probably aren't going do it or do well. And this can have implications later in life. We overprotect our children nowadays(and even THAT can be a bad thing in not setting up the kids for the future to be risktakers), but we are incapable of protecting their emotional well being.

For the worse, unreasonable policies followed by competitiveness is unhealthy. In doing so, people become blinded because the issue doesn't reach them. Childhood is simply being forgotten, since God knows the people are all about 'maturity' and 'discipline' without setting a reasonable standard for the children's needs and natural activeness. Some people devote their entire lives and still don't get the status they want. The people with 4.0 and over GPAs? They might not even get into a college of their choice? That's how hard it is nowadays.

If this keeps up, eventually the schools will be more and more like a prison than a learning environment. Children who faced mental torture and stress will grow up to hate school, drop out, not get anywhere with their lives, and face a variety of psychological problems associated with their stress etched into their memory forever.

Childhood is short. Maturity is forever. Kids are active, they need to go out an run and play to be happy. So how do you cope with these times? Sometimes it's best not to try to please everyone's expectations. Or, reorg the priorities(a radical change to cope with radical zeal). As soon as child comes home, he/she can have the day completely to herself to do whatever she pleases. But in the evening hours it's time to do that homework since she wouldn't be out playing at night.

Since society has to always label and repress the weak, being a child is hard. And it only gets harder and overwhelming once it gets to high school.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, the moronic No Child Left Behind law. Sure, no child may be left behind, but there sure are alot of them being dragged on the ground. And secondly, the rise of an increasingly modernized world, alot of developing countries=massive competition.

What are good Christmas gifts for a grandson and granddaughter?

Tom

I really am at a loss as to what to get them. He's six and she's four. And they have everything they could possible want. If I ask them they just say I don't know. My son says surprise them. They have all the sports equipment and latest gadgets. Should I just send money? The other grandkids aren't a problem to buy for because their parents aren't rich, but my son is. The other grandkids seem grateful for whatever I get them. They don't believe in Santa. My son and daughter-n-law don't think they should tell the kids about Santa, the Easter Bunny, tooth fairy, etc.

Answer
Sometimes the simplest gifts are really the best. Even though kids nowadays are exposed to high-tech toys, they are still kids, nonetheless. I know very few 4 year old girls who don't appreciate a beautiful doll. At her age, I'd say get a giant stuffed animal doll. For the boy, how about a truck or toy airplane...What would make the gift most special is if you spend time playing with it with him.

BTW, one of my most cherished photos is a picture that was taken with me and my grandmother at Christmas when I was about seven. It's her watching me open a gift she got for me. That would be a good photo for someone to take if you are around when the gifts are opened.

Buddy Memp

There was this one toy that was used in gym classes that was plastic and it was shaped like a little one piece claw type thing that you would catch a ball with holes in it. Sort of like a lacrosse stick but instead of mesh it was just plastic backing. What is this toy called?

Answer

I guess it's called scoop ball. I was hoping it would have some awesome name like splatter ball or something, but no. I had to check it out, because I totally remember that game. So Fun!

How do I make a toy parachute that falls for the longest time?

Merlin

How do I make a toy parachute that falls for a long time? Any suggestions on the design of the parachute, materials to use? Thanks!

Answer
the easy way to make a toy at home would be to use dental floss for the lines and a thin plastic sheet or very, very light fabric for the canopy. I would make a round. Building a RAM air canopy would be way to much work. the round canopy will just be a circle of material with a small hole cut in the center. this center hole will allow air to spill out in the center and will let the canopy descend straight down. without it the canopy will wobble back and forth to spill extra air out a side. Look up some pictures of millitary drops for good images of round canopy. flame jumps use them a lot too. I know there is a good picture of a kid jumping a paracamander on the pics of the week page on www.skydiveradio.com.

real parachutes were made of silk, now they are made of F111 or Zero Porosity fabric. Check out www.performancedesigns.com for a site of one of the best manufactures in the business. I just one of their Spectre canopies and love it.

if you ever want to try skydiving yourself I strongly encourage you to do it!

There are a couple websites you need to check out to get good info on skydiving.

http://www.uspa.org is the website of the United States Parachute Association, the governing body for sport parachuting in the United States. There is a list of member dropzones on the website along with all sorts of great info on the sport.

http://www.dropzone.com is another great resource for everything about skydiving and some BASE too.

http://www.skydiveradio.com is just fun and a good place to feel like youâre at the drop zone when you canât physically be there.

Make sure that you contact the drop zone you want to jump at directly. There are a few scams out there, one of which is 1800skyride. They will take your money and send you to any dropzone they want too but only about three dzâs in the country except skyride tickets. So please, please, please contact the dropzone directly.

The tandem is a great jump. Iâd get video too. I made one tandem a little over two years ago and came back to start student training (good info about student training at uspa.org) and got my license. Iâve been jumping for two years and have a few hundred jumps. I love this sport and I sincerely hope that youâll become a full time skydiver and Iâll be able to make some jumps with you at a boogie!

Blue Skies!
