Kid with a cap gun, should this be legal?

Sundae Ros

The other evening I went out in the apt complex I live in, and I heard shots. It really scared me, then I saw it was a small kid shooting a cap gun. I assume these guns are still legal. I am thinking that maybe if any guns need to be outlawed, maybe toy guns should be. What do you guys think. I'm saying that it really really scared me to have these shots fired.

Star Wars Fans??????

Ryan

For those who were alive and saw the very first Star Wars (as in episode 4), were you excited when they started actively to bring back the rest of the triology. Like if you were in high school when you saw Episode 4, were you excited even in your 30's or 40's to go see Episode 3 when it came out in like 2006 or 2005?

Answer
Yeah George Lucas deserves to win the award for "ruining the best thing ever".
Star wars used to be the foundation of my life. I saw Star wars the New hope in 1977 when i was 12, and after it i was a self-proclaimed Star Wars Freak, I bought every magazine, t-shirt,action figure, comic, book, bubblegum card, calendar, bed sheet, towel, ball cap, toy, clock, piggyback, magnet, breakfast cereal, stationary, playing cards, toothbrush that was related to Star Wars.
Then the unspeakable happen in 1999 me and a group of us SW fans lined up for the premiere of the Phantom menace for six days, even the local paper did an article on us.
We all whooped and hollered as the Lucasfilms logo came on the screen glowing green and sparkling.
No words could describe my disappointment as i watch the thing i loved get destroyed for the next 95 minutes,by the man who created it.
It was evident George Lucas had lost the ability to write good quotable dialogue and a good story.
What did he give us? Horrible new Characters (trade federation, gungans, battle droids,Jar Jar) , stupid explainations (midicholarians) and worst of all a totally unlikable kid as Anakin, who cast this kid?
In one scene in pecticular , the choice and writing was so blantantly awful, Qui Gon Jin lifts Anakin into the Pod racer and Anakin says in a total surprised manner "WHOA".
The Kid drives an open air, rocket propelled chariot that travels at 1400 miles per hour and says "WHOA" at being lifted three feet off the ground?
I could list hundreds of things wrong with this film but i know you know them all.Atleast with the first triology it didn`t feel like Lucas was totally making up all this stuff as he went along.
I still don`t know why Lucas didn`t just let someone else write the new films, lots of great books have been published in the SW universe, he could have had a contest between some of these good writers and picked one.Anyone could have written a better episode one

When I heard there was a new Indiana Jones film coming out i said " I hope George Lucas isn't involved with it this time around.`
He was.
It sucked.
But atleast this time i wasn`t surprised.

Lego Kids?

alpine

Does anyone know if any research has been done on kids who grow up with Lego and who are somewhat addicted to these building blocks? I know a few kids who simply will "kill" if anyone should accidentally trip on their Lego, one of whom is 15 years old and still enjoys creating new things with it. He has a huge collection.

I wondered if there was a specific trait about these children who either grow up playing Lego because it is the only toy given to them, or is there is a specific trait among children who specifically love mostly Lego regardless of what is given to them? i.e. Is there a special trait about kids who love Lego, as opposed to Kids who could not care less?

Will appreciate a reasonable answer.

Answer
I think that the reason the kids get upset is that they see it more of an artwork they have built and don't like it destroyed where others just see them as building blocks.

My son (10YO) loves lego, especially Star Wars sets but I don't see him being fanatical about it.

Kids and toys?

mrjts

I have one daughter age of 7 and one step-son he is 10 and they both are always fighting over toys. how can I teach them to share?

Answer
1.Tell them about the poor kids who wish they had these toys!
2.Let them play with the toys at different times!
3.Take their toys away until they learn to share!
4.Show them how it feels when someone refuses to share with them
Example:Go buy something like a toy that both of them wants and say it yours and when they ask to play with it you say so you want me to share?( Then they are suppose to say yes)(they may not but if they do)!You say no im not sharing my toy! Then if they ask why then say becasue you guys dont know how to share! Then ask them how they felt when you said that you are not sharing your toy! Then say well thats how each of yall feel when yall dont share you make a person sad because ou wont share! If this doesnt work sorry with my kids it did!

Questions about aging kids and toys?

Ricky

Ive always had a lot of toys, and ive always been a "pack rat". When I started to get older I never threw out my toys, I just kept them put away in the attic or something.

But then my parents got annoyed with it all piling up (even though they knew I wasn't going to buy anymore)

Now I was looking at some stuff on ebay *hint* and eventually ended up looking up toys I used to have... (Mostly cause of the movie the 40 year old virgin) and saw that a lot of them I had are worth a good amount now...

So why do parents have to be cruel and make kids through away their toys instead of getting some money for them?

I could've had around $300 just from some of the things I looked at so far...

Answer
For one, parents don't think about the vintage value of them at the time (who knows what's going to be the toy that everyone wants twenty years later) and they take of valuable space.

Why do kids act like such brats these days?

Lucy

I remember when kids used to be precious. They actually acted like little sweethearts and didn't act like they are old bad teenagers and adults. I listen to my mom's stories about the good old days and it makes me want to be born then in the 70's and 80's. Kids these days are using bad words, inappropriate jokes and they are incredibly annoying! Is it just me or are parents getting worse and worse at raising kids? And i am not an adult. I am 17 and i'm not like other teenagers my age. I act like a kid. But a good kid. I never dreamed that I a kid would EVER dislike children. But I do now. It's making me not want to have kids when i am older. Why do kids think they have to act so old and cuss and just act terrible? I can't even stand to ride the bus anymore because the elementry kids and the high schoolers have to ride at the same time. They really get on my nerves. If i do ever have kids i am home schooling them so they won't act like these other brats. I like kids when they are nice and have good manners like they used to.( And i rarely see any) Why can't parents discipline their kids anymore? Anyone else agree with this? :(
The other teenagers are mean to the kids when they act terrible, but i just act like i like them so I don't make them upset. So i guess i don't completely dislike kids, but they still drive me insane on the inside.

Answer
Keep in mind that todays generation of "brats" are the products of those awesome 70's and 80's kids.. Im from that generation and it is true, kids today are wretched.. but it started when I was a kid. Yes, teens SEEMED better, but their BS was and drug use was in secret.. they rebelled, just quietly.. I left more parties than you can imagine because they passed the pipe.. or tin foil..or whatever.. Then they grew up and their need to rebell openly they taught to their kids. They eigher DO NOT CARE.. Or they mold them to rebell. I heard one woman tell a bus driver when he kicked her daughter from the bus for fighting that she aint havin no weekling child and her child gonna stand up and beat the sheet out of that other kids assss! Thats the mentality today.. Dont teach kids to love and sacrifice..teach them to be selfish and fight to be on top.

Then the opposite parent doesnt care one way or another.. Like a woman I knew who left her 2 young chldren home alone for days on end to screw a new boy toy every week.. And even tried to teach my daughter and her daughter (both 10 at the time) to do the same when they grow up! Said its better than being tied down to one DIK! OHH I was mad and told her to NEVER tell my daughter something so HORRIBLE ever again! Her kids ran wild.. they were vandalizing others properties and stealing others lawn stuff or kids bikes.. and her opinion of the matter was that they obviosuly must have wanted it stolen to have left it out like that..

Another two of my daughters friends was 5 and 7.. they road their bikes from dawn until midnight all over the neighborhood with no parents around.. There was a hooker in the area that they talked too a lot and a dealer they went into the house of cause "mom knew him real well"

The mentality of where my kids were born was to blow pot in their faces as babies and give them drugs as kids "cause they were going to just do it anyways" I told those parents they deserved their kids to fail in life.

My teen and preteen.. do not act like this.. Aside from normal teen issues and fights.. this is my sons mentality.. (Today, he went into a healthcare clinic.. and was soon swarmed by kids and toddlers wanting his attention and he talked to everyone about their interests and had a two year old little girl clinging to him.. he acted like it was the most natural thing in the world for kids to climb him) (His sisters friends were fighting and telling each other to leave and never come back.. he got up off his game, went into the kitchen, got out the cook book, then invited them all to make cookies with him.. He did this so they would forget their fighting and become friends again.. it worked.)

what are some things you'd put in a kids clubhouse?

Q. Hey I'm working on a set (which happens to be a kids clubhouse) and was wondering what kind of neat stuff that you might put in it. The age group is about 5-12 and im looking for some what vintage items, you know like things from the 50's-80's. Any ideas?

Best toys for 1 year olds and 2 year olds?

azure

My daughter is turning 1 next month- what's a great toy?

My son is two and I want to find him a toy that he won't get bored with...

Answer
I would try books. Kids of all ages love them and it something that would last for a long time.

Also blocks and other stacking toys. Your 2 year old will like building things, and both will enjoy knocking them down. Super simple and they will last forever. My 8 year old god son will play with blocks when ever he is over.

My daughter has loved her Weebles for a while now. We got her Weeblot castle and it has a slide to send them down and a moat that spins. It says 18months+ on the pacakging but she loved it at 13months and still loves it now and she just turned 2. They have all sorts of neat sets to look into.

For your 2 year old try Mr. Potato Head. Get him a big section of pieces and just let him create. My duaghter got a set a couple weeks ago and will play with him for hours at a time, plus it is a great way to teach them body parts.

You may also want to look into getting a playhouse, it would be great for both of them.

Answer
My kids love the Playskool Weeble playsets. They have all kinds of cute weeble sets like a castle or treehouse. If you cant find those I say go for Fisher Price Little People. My 14 month old and 3 year play with those all the time. Good luck!

How to celebrate christmas with toddlers?

I luva Chr

How do I make it fun for a 2 year old boy and a 3 year old girl. There my nieces and nephews. Include:
Morning-
Afternoon-
Evening-

Please help
No opening gifts till Christmas Evening When everyones there

Answer
It's tricky with kids that young. If you overstimulate them, they will get really cranky really quickly.

Morning- Have them help you make an easy breakfast (I suggest 'Monkey Bread'). Then open presents and eat.

Afternoon- They can play with their new toys while watching Christmas cartoons (I own the collection of classic Christmas cartoons).

Evening- Family dinner. Give them holiday themed coloring book and crayons to keep them busy and calm.

Does Babies R Us Tell You That They'll Call Back After An Interview Or Do They Hire You On The Spot?

ILoveRavio

Okay...so I had a group interview at Babies R Us. I came in an hour and a half early. After the group interview, two candidates were sent home and four of us remained. I was amongst the four who had the 1:1 interview with the manager. This was part two of the interview (made it to the big leagues). They told me that they may call me after two days (48 hours) after the date of the interview or I could call back to check the status of my application. Does this mean that I am hired? Would they have hired me on the spot if they were interested or is this how the hiring process is? Anyone with any prior experiences?

Answer
Below are a few interview experiences shared by applicatants who applied at Babies R US. Good Luck !!!

Sales Associate Babies ''R'' - InterviewbSan Francisco, CA (Jul 2012 took 3 days)
Before I start, I just want to add that this is a newly built location. It's still in the process of being built so my interview may be different from many others. I applied online then a day after I received an email stating that they had no positions available for me. 2 days after that email, I received a phone call for an interview. Like many others on here, I researched this site.
When I got there, I was expecting a group interview but instead I got a 1:1 interview with the manager. He asked 3 questions, none of them being difficult what so ever. First question was to introduce myself. Next question, he as what I did in my previous job. Third, he asked my availability. Afterwards, he did all the talking. He explained to me about their goals as a company. He talked about the sales associates job, etc.
3 days later, I got a call and I was hired.
Interview Questions
What did you do in your previous job?

Cashier at Babies ''R'' Us-Interviewed in Fresno, CA (Dec 2011 - took 1 week)
I interview for Babies R Us in December 2011. I was contacted by HR to come in for an interview. Overall I had two interviews. The first interviewer was a shift manager and only took less than 10 minutes. He asked basic questions, such as what I was currently doing (school) and my future plans for after that. He asked about my prior work experience as a cashier, and then asked about my availability. 5 days later I got a call to come in for a second interview with the store manager. He asked the same questions, along with a couple scenario ones. I was offered the job on the spot.
Interview Questions
If a customer came up to you and asked for your help, but at the same time you got a call to come to the register because it was busy, and you saw a kid spill something on the floor, what order would you put these in as most important?
Describe a time when you did something that ended out not working your way.?

Cashier and Sales Associate at Babies ''R'' Us-Austin, TX (Oct 2011 - took 3 days)
I applied, they called me back for a group interview. It was at 7am before the store opened and only 3 of the 5 scheduled actually showed up.
We first told our names and favorite cartoon character.
Then we were asked to make a toy out of mega blocks as a team and then market it back to the panel of managers. Halfway through, they "recalled" all the yellow blocks and we had to rebuild without them. The trick on this one is they dump out a certain number of blocks for you to work with, but never say you can't go back to the bin they came from and grab more.
Then we did and individual interview with the panel where they asked what game system I would recommend for a 4 year old boy. I answer 3DS which was new at the time and they LOVED my answer because it's portable, has lots of games and makes them lots of money when they sell it.
They called me back a couple days later and I was hired.
Interview Questions
Your name and favorite cartoon character?.
They dump out a pile of mega blocks and tell you, as a team, to build a toy and then come up with how it's powered, what it does, the age range and the price for it. The time limit is 5 minutes.Halfway through, they come and "recall" one color of block and you're forced to start over.
A mother comes in looking for an electronic game system as a christmas gift for her son, he is 4. What would you recommend?

how to make a differance in the world?

Gabriel

so I'm 17, super ready for Senior year! but I'm a little concerned about college. Look I don't want a meaningless "desk job" I don't even care about making too much money. I just want to make a difference in this world (if that doesn't sound to corny) do you guys have any Ideas?

Answer
There's so many things that you can do to make a difference, but it just all depends on your interests. For example, you can volunteer in a children's hospital. Here, you would deliver meals and snacks to patients, greet people at the information desk, or play with the sick children.
For more general information about hospital volunteering, go to: http://www.ehow.com/about_4672638_hospital-volunteers.html
I stumbled across this website. It's the children's hospital site for Boston, and if you scroll down it has all of the same services that volunteers would do at hospitals any where else: http://www.childrenshospital.org/about/Site1394/mainpageS1394P5.html
----
You can also put together care packages to send to soldiers. Care packages consist of things like chapstick, travel-sized shampoo and conditioner, razors, soap, first aid kits, small board games, etc. These sound like everyday things, but these are items that could greatly help out our soldiers who are out there in harsh conditions. In addition to that, you can write them a letter and include your contact information and hope that they write back. It can be cool to talk to a soldier, and you can include a copy of some of the letters under the community service portion of your college application! Sending care packages is so easy to do, so you can do that from home in addition to any other community service.

For general how-to information on sending care packages to soldiers, go to: http://www.ehow.com/how_4490375_send-care-package-soldier.html
For a more detailed list of general care packages, go to: http://www.hugsforsoldiers.org/node/11
For holiday packages, see: http://www.thesoldiersfamily.com/Holiday_Care_Packages.html#christmas

You can send care packages just to a general place, such as: http://www.operationshoebox.com/
You can also "adopt a soldier" which means that you would be sending care packages to one (or more if you would like) specific soldier: http://anysoldier.com/
Another "adopt a soldier" program: http://adoptaussoldier.org/
------
Another thing you can do on the side is to donate box tops to the poorer schools around your town. My mom does this; she collects box tops, which are each worth ten cents a piece, and after every couple of months she donates them to the schools that could truly use the extra money. It's so quick and easy to do and it's something else that you can do from home. The website has it centered around donating to your own school, but if your school is well-off then it's always better to donate to the schools that really need it. Just show up, tell the main office that you would like to make a donation, and that's it!
------------
You can also donate toys/clothes/items that you don't often use anymore to your local goodwill or salvation army center. This is very quick and easy as well, and something that you can do on the side of anything big.
-------
Another option is to tutor kids at the nearby elementary schools/middle schools or shelve books at your local library. Just contact the school and/or library, tell them you're interested, and ask them if they could use your help.
------
Sometimes the neighborhood gets a little dirty, so picking up trash could always help. Go around with a trashbag and pick up any litter that you see laying around. It may not feel like you're getting recognized, but people will be glad that their neighborhood is a little cleaner.
-------
Putting a portion of your weekly money (whether that's an allowance or job salary) towards different causes is another idea as well. Some options:
Donate money to japan: http://blogs.forbes.com/elizabethwoyke/2011/03/11/how-to-donate-money-by-cellphone-to-japan-quake-victims/
Donate money to kids with cleft lips: http://www.causes.com/causes/295743-cleft-lip-and-palate-foundation-of-smiles
Donate money to children in need: worldvision.org
-----------
There's a lot of other things that you can do, such as serving food at your local homeless shelter, assisting the workers at your local animal shelter, sending packages (like care packages) to battered womens' shelters,and/or buddying up with an elder at your local nursing home. To find your local places, for example, to find your local homeless shelter, just google "local homeless shelter" and there will be directories for nation-wide.

My daughter, who is a very mild mannered person, as is her hubby has my just turned 2 year old grand daughter and last time they drove 4 hours north, my grand daughter screamed for 4 hours. !! Being grandma, I have forgotten some of the tricks ? What things can we bring or do or ?? to help with the upcoming 4 hour ride. Driving at night is not an option this time, My grand is a great kid but very very strong willed. Since I am also strong willed , she doesn't do this to me, but she needs some distraction or ??? She is very smart :) They do spank of necessary , but that doesn't always work ???

Answer
We drive to Colorado once a year. It's a 13hr drive from here.
I found the cheap toy isle in wlamart. (As in cheap I mean $1-$3) I loaded up ap backpack full of these toys that she'd never played with prior to the long drive. Also brought a couple of funny interesting things like a tiny dictionary, because for some reason she likes to look through little books even though she can't read yet. Some bendy straws, a stack of fake money. I found the simpler the better. And choose things that she can use her imigination and pretend with. And we also brought the DVD player with some of her fav. movies.
I agree with bringing little fun snacks too they alwas help. And taking a run around the rest stop break. Maybe bring a jar with some holes in the top and catch some rollie pollies at a rest stop. She'll have fun watching them crawl around in the jar when you get back in the car. Or staple some plain paper together and bring a pack of stickers. Then have her make a "sticker book".
Have fun. my daughter was a ton easier around age 2 and up.
It gets better every time.
Good luck!!

Oh yeah? Do you use electricity every day? Do you eat fast food? (Does it make itself?) Do you have toys, including electronic toys? Do you have any idea how much energy it takes to make them? Have you EVER bothered to look it up? You're obviously using the Web. You have a computer and a broadband connection. "You adults." Kids are just as guilty, sweetheart. At least "we adults" admit to it. You buggers think you're saints. Ha.

Is a toy maltese good for a mature 5, 7 and 9 year old?

rachels

the nine is turning 10 in october, the 7 in january, and the 5 in march. We are getting a puppy.
how about a small yorkie or shih tzu? whats the youngest age for these dog breeds?
If anyone can give me ideas of small sized breeds that are hypo-allergenic that would be helpful.

Answer
Small kids + small puppy= disaster.

A lot of reputable Maltese breeders wont even sell to people with young children.

ADD:
Most small dogs are not compatible with small children. Breeders of both Yorkshire Terriers and Shih Tzus are more than likely to reject you because of your young children.

And there is no such thing as a "Hypoallergenic" dog. They all shed and all have dander which can causes allergies, some are just less likely to do so.

Here is a list of dog breeds the AKC considers better choices for allergies suffers but most are small breeds that are not compatible with small kids.

What are some good gifts for kids ages 5-7, 8-12 and 15-17?

C

Every year, my husband and I, donate money to the couple of food pantry's and shelters that are in our city. This year, two of the more well known ones asked if instead of money we could buy gifts. They gave us age groups of 5-7, 8-12 and 15-17. We were also given a list of what the toys should / shouldn't be. Which was: anything that could be a unisex toy would be best, no small parts, no games or movies rated higher than E or PG and nothing where the parents would have to spend money in the future to keep going (like a pay-as-you-go cell phone). My children are still really young [still playing with the preschool toys], and I don't have any nieces or nephews who are in any of the age groups [well, I have one - but she's convinced that every kid no matter what age wants an iPod, so she's not much help]. Any suggestions? I'm sort of at a loss, and we wanted to have this done by this weekend. Thank you for any suggestions!

Answer
all ages:

sports stuff such as soccer balls, jump ropes, basketballs, mini skateboards, skates, scooters [they sell for cheap now]

xmas help? what are your kids' favorite toys (ages 9, 7, 5, 3)?

desmeran

My kids were until a few months ago the only grandchildren on both sides of the family, so unsurprisingly they have way too many toys already (no fault of ours!). So I'm a bit at a loss for what to get them this Christmas. They don't really have a wish-list (aside from art supplies, and my little guy wants more trucks), but obviously we'd still like to find them something they'd love.

I'm not interested in any toy that beeps, talks, lights up, or otherwise drives parents insane. I'm not interested in what's trendy or ties in with a tv show or purports to be a "learning toy". I'm just wondering for the following age groups what toy or other item your child *plays with* the most? Not the one that cost the most or that they were most excited to get at first or that they're asking for, but the one that they truly love and keep on using month after month?

I'm looking for a 9-year-old, 7-year-old, 5-year-old, and 3-year-old. They're girl-boy-girl-boy, but the girls are pretty tomboyish and the boys are pretty flexible in what they play with, too.

Thanks for your input!
I know 9-year-olds are pretty much past playing too much with "toys" per se ... it doesn't have to be a toy so much as something that your kid really loves.
they would love a pet, but can't because of allergies and asthma (and parental overload ... there are enough living things in this house already!)
okay i apparently missed all the troll/dog drama and am really not trying to be a forum for trolls here. talk about "so high school...."

thanks to the people giving actual help....

Answer
You are sooooo cheating! But I will help you, having walked that mile. Plus, hey I like you.

My 9 year old (boy) has been into video games, baseball, soccer (anything where running is promoted), and more recently, cartooning. He likes a "cool room" and gets thrilled at cool stuff for his walls and bedding. Signs like No Girls Allowed, while frowned upon by us level headed grownups, are the living end for a 9 year old boy.

At 3, sadly enough, he liked any toy that beeps, talks, lights up, or otherwise drives parents insane.

Gina's 6, right smack between your 5 and 7 year olds. Pet Shop things are her world. There are all kinds of little pets and playthings for them. They come with toys and houses and accessories. Kind of like a four legged Barbie. About as easy to open as a Barbie too. I'd rather get a raw egg out of a steel box wrapped in barbed wire. But it's for the greater good right? Gina also has a huge immagination, and loves pretending, so we are getting her dress up clothes this year. This was a huge hit with our (now) 18 year old when she was the same age. Apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Are you handy around the house? For their birthdays Mr. Mozz made Evan a treehouse and Gina a sandbox. Another year we painted their rooms. We rag-rolled Evan's room camoflauge pattern, and Gina's we made stencils around the walls. Can you open this? I dont know if I did it right.

http://s487.photobucket.com/albums/rr239/pastamaria/

Mostly it boils down to the personality of the child. Cartooning gear is a great choice for Evan but wouldn't be for Gina. Good luck, and pay attention when they go flying into a room to see a particular commercial!

The dog comment is for me. I'm sorry someone else's drama got dragged into your question. It's inappropriate. Apparently my kids are ugly and I'm a dog. Wasn't much more to it than that. That's a lotta hate.

How many toys is too many?!!! HELP!!!?

TwilightMa

I have 4 kids, 3 boys and 1 girl. boys are ages 6,4,and 1. girl is about to turn 3. Too many toys! how do i choose what to keep and what to get rid of? and how many to keep?

Answer
I'm about to have my 4th, my oldest is 5, and I understand your situation. My husband always complains about the toys. They seem to be reproducing in my playroom. Anyway, at birthdays I let the kids open all the presents, but only take a few favorites out of the box. At Christmas I stick to a theme, and limit my purchasing because the grandparents always over do it. Always, throw away anything that is broken or missing pieces. When adding toys to the collection, I always take a few and pack them away in the garage for later. When the kids are bored with everything in the house I take out a old toy or open a new one, and of course pack one away. Only have out enough toys, so that cleaning up is something the kids can do without much assistance. Also, have a place for everything. I have a specific tray, box, or see-through plastic container for every type of toy. It keeps the space where most of the toys are organized and neat looking. Additionally, sorting toys helps build math skills so there is reason behind the madness of keeping the toys straight. Get rid of them if they begin to collect dust. That's a sure sign the kids are not interested in the toy any more. I wouldn't set a number of toys to keep, I think its all about what you and your kids can control. I think big toy boxes are a bad idea. Daycares organize their toys by type and use, which makes the thousands of toys they have seem organized. If you are able to offer a wide variety of toys to your child be happy, just give them the skills they'll need to keep the organized and neat. I love that my kids have plenty of toys to kept them engaged and happy without much television. We have toys outside and inside, in the playroom and in their bedrooms. Yes, I play with them and I too enjoy the variety. But, its also nice too rarely hear, "I'm bored," and to be able to cook dinner without a little one tugging on my pants.

Any suggestions for a good educational toy for a three yr old?

Kate

she has the LeapFrog Scribble and Write..

Answer
Anything made by Leap Frog- I love their products!

Arts and crafts supplies- crayons, fingerpaints, sidewalk chalk, blank paper and coloring sheets

musical instruments- harmonica, tambourine, maracas, cymbals, bells, CDs with lullabies and nursery rhymes and classical music on them.

Puzzles

Board games such as Chutes and Ladders

Card Games such as Memory

Bubbles, balls, balloons

Mega Blocks, Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys

Slides, Swings, Trampoline, Sandbox (and beach toys), toys to play with in the bathtub or sink (kitchen utensils work well).

Sports equipment- toddler basketball, baseball/softball, etc.

Refrigerator Magnets (alphabet and numerical)

Magnifying Glass, Critter Cage

DVDs- Leap Frog makes some educational DVDs as well

Computer software and/or websites- I have a three year old daughter who likes JumpStart. We also visit BrainQuest, Starfall and other websites.

Wagon

Dress up (stock up after halloween- various wigs, hats, facepaints, shoes, costume jewelry, etc.)

BOOKS! The look and find books are great, Books A Million has a big selection of them (some specifially for toddlers with more durable pages). Barnes & Noble has a great selection of DK Baby books, which are great for infants and toddlers. Traditional storybooks are great. Read to them, ask them questions such as how would that make them feel, what they think will happen next and my 3 year old likes to "retell" the story to me (an early reading skill).

Games such as Simon Says, I Spy, etc.- no toy required.

Instead of buying a toy, try spending that money on an activity instead. A month of Gymboree/Little Gym or gymnastics, dance, etc. Trip and/or membership to the aquarium, zoo, children's museum.

There are free activities, as well. Most libraries and/or book stores have a weekly story time.

What kind of outside toys does your toddler play with?

iceyblue19

As the weather gets warmer I would like to take my son outside, he's 2 years old. I realize I'm going to have to buy some things haha. He already has a sandbox but we do not have sand for it yet. What does your toddler enjoy doing/playing with outside?

Answer
Make sure you get a bunch of fun sand toys to go with the sand box. It keeps my 4 yr old and her friends entertained for hours. Other toys that are popular with all the little ones:

Sidewalk chalk
Bubbles
Pool
Waterslide
Scooter
electric ATV
Tricycle
Bicycle
Any type of sport...basketball, soccer ball, Tball, etc.
Flying kites
Jumprope
Hopscotch
Tent and tunnel sets
Playground equipment (slides, playhouse, etc)
See Saw
Swingset and tire swing
Trampoline

We have them all, and they regularly get used. Needless to say we spend the summer, spring, and fall mostly outdoors

Traveling with a car seat in the Airport?

Cotton C

I am going to travel during the Christmas time with my 2 and 3 year old and would like to take a car seat so that I can have a better control of one toddler. How can i transport my car seat through the airport, since it will be only me traveling?

PS I remembered seeing a couple a year or so ago with a pulley that transported their car-seat but not sure where to buy one or what it is called. Thanks in advance

Answer
I'm a former Flight Attendant and I fly a lot alone with my three children on transatlantic and other flights. We always bring a car seat along and it's never been a problem.

Good for you for bringing the car seat along. You'll find this to be both more comfortable and safer than just using the lap belt.

There are a number of gadgets sold to address the problem of getting a bulky car seat through the airport. These are just examples;

http://www.gogobabyz.com/products/gogo_kids.html
(I think this is the one you saw)
http://www.amazon.com/Traveling-Toddler-Attach-Rolling-Carry/dp/B000JHN3AS
http://www.onestepahead.com/product/osa/363756.html

Not all fit all models of seats so check before you buy! Also, consider the cost and how much you'll be using it. Go to any Family Travel websites and check out what they have on offer, then you may want to check out Ebay or Craigslist in your area...

I simply use a small metal luggage cart and use an extra bungee cord to secure my seat to it. I recommend a fold able cart with a *metal* base. The ones with plastic bases break too easily. This was a relic from my first airline and it is something you can use later for luggage, when your children are long out of car seats. Mine has lasted almost 20 years and carts a 25lbs car seat (it's a Radian65, for the record but I've also used a Scenera and a Sit-n-Stroll).

I actually use this contraption instead of a stroller and my daughter could ride in it until about age 3 but this depends on a lot of factors like how big the airports are and how much your children can walk. I also had a good baby carrier (by definition, they should go to age 2). I would alternate walking with the sling and the car seat contraption with my 2 and then 3 children.

Some parents also manage to use bungee cords to attach their seat to their stroller. It can be attached to the back (back to back) but keep an eye out as this can tumble if the child is not in it. Others also manage to wedge their car seat into the seat portion of their stroller (wish I could post pictures!) When there is no child, throw your carry-on bags to offset the weight.

If you have a double stroller, you wedge the car seat in one seat and still have the other for the kids. You can try any of those methods. A lot depends on your models. Experiment at home first.

You may want to visit some car safety sites and see what other people who have your seat do when they travel (car safety people are big on flying with their car seats!)

Just some general car seat information;

Make sure your car seat is approved for use on aircraft. If you're flying on a U.S. company, see the below link for information on if it's approved. Most car seats, including infant buckets, sold in the U.S. are.

http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/

If you are flying a non-U.S. company, see the information for your airline. If you search with the name of the airline, followed by "children", that will usually give you the right page.

Never check car seats as luggage. They can easily be lost and/or damaged and airlines wont take responsibility for what they consider to be a "delicate" item.

You may want to consider the CARES harness for your older child. It was pictured in the FAA link above. If you opt for this, please arrange a car seat at your destination so that you wont have to check yours'.

http://www.kidsflysafe.com/

About 8 years ago, I wrote an article on the subject of flying with children for a local newsletter. On the web, all the information I found was written by people who had never worked directly for the airlines. I wanted to promote the use of car seats on aircraft for both safety and comfort. I have more tips so feel free to visit;
http://flyingwithchildren.blogspot.com

Good luck finding a way that works for your, your children and your journey!

Travelling on airplanes with carseats?

Annette T

I'll soon be travelling from Kuwait to Amsterdam and from there connecting to LAX. All flights are KLM/ NWA. I am travelling with my hubby as well as a two year old and five month old. We've purchased a ticket for the two y.o. and reserved the basinnet for the baby. KLM ticketing agent said that she could block out a fourth seat for the baby. This of course depends on whether the flight will be full or not.
Question is, should we bring the car seats for both or not? I can't find any stickers on either of the carseats saying if they've been approved for aircraft use. The seat for the 2yo is a MaxiCosi and the baby's is a rear-facing Graco Snug Ride. I've read lots of posts where parents ended up having to check the carseats at the last minute and it ended up being more of hassle than it was worth. The KLM website says that kids with tickets are welcome to bring their carseats aboard as does theKLM ticketing agent, but I know that sometimes this doesn't always end up happening on board.
Your thoughts?
On the way back, I'm on my own, so I don't really know how much I'm going to want to deal with two kids, carryons, stroller and carseats.
We'll be doing some internal flying within the States, all on United, so any thoughts on this would be welcomed also.

We obviously have to bring the carseats with us, the question is whether we ought to check them or carry them on board.

Answer
I'm a former flight Attendant and I fly a lot with my three children. We always bring a car seat.

Here is what their website says;

"If a seat has been reserved for your child, you may bring your own (car) child seat aboard on the condition that it fits between the armrests of the aeroplane seat (42 cm/16.5 inches). Only childrenâs seats that display no defects and that carry a visible seal of quality awarded by the European Union or other official government agency may be taken aboard. A seat for a second baby or the use of a (car) child seat should be reserved in advance by contacting KLM Reservations or your local KLM ticket office.

The following seals of approval will be accepted aboard:

UN Standards ECE R44-03 and 44-04
US FMVSS no. 213
Canadia CMVSS 213/123.1
German TUV/958-01/2001
Types marked approved by transport Canada
Types marked approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
Types marked approved by Joint civil Aviation Authority (JAA)"

http://www.klm.com/travel/nl_en/travel_information/travel_planning/children/index.htm#4

They are pretty generous as far as which approvals they accept.

It is not recommended that you check car seats as luggage. They can be lost and/or broken too easily. I've walked off an international flight to not find all my bags. The real risk here is being stuck at your destination without your seat, or have it in a condition that you can't leave the airport.

It can be brought to the gate and "gate checked" with the strollers and wheelchairs. This is slightly better than checking them in at the gate.

If you are unsure of the approval, write Graco and Maxi Cosi. I wrote about my Radian 65 and heard back right away that it did have universal (UN) approval, although it is only sold in N. America. You can then print up the reply and bring it with you.

Look in your owner's manual and this information might already be there. I bring mine with me when I travel, if only to show them that the seat is designed to be used on planes (even though they left out that fun fact about the UN approval).

To get your seats through the airport, there are all sorts of gadgets sold. Here are just some examples (not to promote any of them specifically). A browse through any travel-with-children website will usually have a selection. Not all fit all car seats (or budgets) so buyer beware!

http://www.gogobabyz.com/products/gogo_kids.html
http://www.amazon.com/Traveling-Toddler-Attach-Rolling-Carry/dp/B000JHN3AS
http://www.onestepahead.com/product/osa/363756.html

I simply strap mine to a small-but-sturdy metal luggage cart and use an extra bungee cord. Some parents get creative with the stroller, either wedging it inside or strapping it to the back.

There is a car seat alternative, the CARES harness;
http://www.kidsflysafe.com/

They actually suggest using their product and checking the car seat, incurring the wrath of more than one car safety organization. But it is an alternative. At $75, it's a little expensive for something that can only be used inflight. It might have good resale value or you could take advantage of those on Craigslist and Ebay who are renting this gizmo.

I believe EU approval is pending. Perhaps check with KLM before purchasing to be sure you can use it.

The problem is that if you need your car seat at your destination, than you will end up checking it. You could organize yourself, such as arranging a car seat in the U.S. You could buy a cheap but reliable seat like the Scenera and using that on your trip. You could order it online and have whomever is picking you up at the airport bring it. At the end of your American adventure, you can simply leave it behind for your next visit.

I actually do this with my booster seats for my older two and had an extra seat at my parents' for years, used only on our visits.

Once on board the aircraft, simply be nice about it. If you run into problems, don't lose your cool and ask to talk to the chief purser (head honcho) about the seat.

I too have had seats taken away from me on European companies (Iberia, Air France, some U.K. companies). I bring mine and try anyway. You aren't guarenteed to use them as you are on U.S. companies so once in the U.S. on United, as long as your older boy has a seat, he can use his car seat.

One airline (low cost, Irish) even didn't allow car seats at all but usually it's fine. My experiences have mostly been with Lufthansa and it only happened once with them (and didn't have to if I had only brought the documentation about the UN approval-grrr!)

About eight years ago, I wrote an article on flying with children based on both my practical and professional experience. Later, I expanded it and put it on a blog so parents would have access to non-commercial information on the subject. Many have in turn contributed their tips.

My contact information is at the end if you have further questions.

Summer activities for toddlers?

kristen

I am going to be a nanny for 3 small kids ages one and two. What are some fun activities we can do this summer, please help I really want to do a good job it's a great family I get to work for.

Answer
playing with shapes and colors, sing songs!, little people toys, see and say toys, mickey mouse clubhouse and toy story are awesome, but monitor all for scenes which could be scary, also gerber snack foods help...never leave children alone at that age (not being preachy, just a mom) ;)

Song suggestions for toddler ballet class?

BreezeGirl

I am teaching a ballet class to two and three year olds this summer, and at the end of the session they will perform a short routine for their families. I need suggestions for songs that are preferably 'tear-jerker' songs that leave the parents saying 'aww' or very active ones that will keep the kids excited.

My four to six year old class will be dancing to "I Love You This Big" by Scotty McCrerry for ballet and "Splish Splash I was taking a bath" by Sesame Street.

Also, I will have a boy in the class, so I need to avoid princess songs.

Answer
Disney songs- Toy Story songs, The Lion King, some thing popular but innocent- anything like that. Hope this helps

Christmas toys for nearly 2 year old?

Riyen's

He listens to the Elmo song and the Spongebob intro allllll day long and never gets tired of it, lol. So I was wondering, what big present are you getting your 2 year old? What small ones ?

Answer
So far we've got our 2 yr old Son:
-Puzzles
-Dirt Devil Cleaning set "Mop, Broom etc.." (promoting imaginary play, he shows interest in helping me when im doing these things)
-Train set "Thomas train set that you can connect other train sets with it, you think a 2yr old wouldn't be old enough for this but my son LOVES IT!! You flip the switch on thomas "he can do that himself" & watch thomas go round & round & through a cave" (we took a test drive with it before christmas hehe)
-Play Food
-Shopping Cart
-Black & Decker tool kit (which was given to him early, He loves it even though he doesn't understand it all he loves to go around with the hammer and screw driver & "fix" things lol) it will be a great learning tool for at least 2more years I'm sure, or more.
-Remote Control Car (he understands things like the remote, if you press this button his happens, turning off and on the lights "cause & effect" type deal..So I know he will love the car.
-Probably one of the little people play sets.
-Pot & Pan set.
-I am also thinking about the Tag Junior, But I am still trying to figure out if my son will use it or not.

-If you aren't getting you son power wheels then try one of those smaller 4wheelers you see with the characters on them at walmart, they are $49 & SO WORTH IT! My son LOVES his and It will last him another 6months or so "hes a BIG kid"...But he will definitely be ready for Power Wheels thats for sure. They are great, stay charged for weeks & have amazing reviews from others as well. It goes around 2-3mph and that doesnt sound like a lot of power but it is "plenty for a 2yr old", I showed my son how to use it and it pulls me I'm 150lbs hes just learning to steer a little, and to reverse with his feet.

I also wanted to say my son Is IN LOVE with Spongebob. His other favorite cartoons are Whats New Scooby Doo, Jimmy Neutron, Fairly Oddparents, Wow Wow Wubzy, Yo Gabba Gabba..We dont have cable but do have dvds and he gets to watch an hr of tv a day spread out into 15 or 30minutes throughout the day. Just throwing those others out there because your son might interested in them as well, walmart has a lot of $5-$13 dvds with these cartoons & others and I'll probably do a few of those for Christmas as well, if we don't give the gift of cable as mom is going insane at times lol..

Good Luck! I am interested in the other answers you get as well, great question. :)

How long until kids get tired of themed rooms? (toy story 2.5 year old)?

Q. My son is about to get his big boy room. He has a blue car bed, toy story bed stuff, and things to go on the wall. I want to get him a toy story toy organizer, table and chairs, and maybe a rug and lamp. Will he hate his room in a few years? I don't want to waste my money, but I want him to have a room he will love.

Answer
My son is 8 and has had a Disney Cars themed room for 4 years now. He has just recently informed me that he is over it and wants an "Army Guy Room." I feel like I got good use of money with it lasting for 4 years.

My 7 year old daughter has had Tinkerbell for as long as I can remember and she still loves it.

What is a good toy for a 7 year old boy?

Justonefor

my nephew is haveing his birthday party soon and i have no idea what to get him (well i had an idea but someone else already got it for him ).

He loves video games for his DS but i want to get him something he can play with outside or maybe a project he could do? he's not into coloring he's the kind of kid who likes to be on the go for the most part .

So i guess what i am asking is with the exception of any video games what is a good idea of a toy that a 7 year old boy would love oh and that would be ok in the event his 4 yr old sister wants a turn?

Answer
I have 9 y.o. twin sons and apart from video games, they love Lego (like the sets where you can build dinosaurs or airplanes), Pokemon cards, Harry Potter and Diary of a Wimpy kid books, science experiment or magic trick sets, transformers. For outdoor toys, you could get a water sprinkle toy or sports stuff like soccer ball, or baseball glove.
