What is the name of the charity where you donate toys and they give them to kids in the hospital?

The Direct

I want to buy some toys for the kids. I've heard of this organization but I don't know of the name.

Thanks!

What to do with crappy toys?

Kassidy

My mom hates those crappy toys you get from Happy Meals, Subway Kids Meals, the dollar store, and the cereal boxes. My mom doesn't let the kids open it and throws them in a bin for when we go away and the kids want something to play with. We aren't going away again until April and the bin is over flowing (there are 7 kids so lots of cereal and happy meals). My mom wants ideas on what to do with them instead of throwing them away. Any ideas?
I was thinking of baking a giant tray of cookies. Then unwraping each toy and putting it in a seperate goodie bag. Then we can bring everything to the soup kitchen. Not only will they get a meal, but a little surpirse too.

Answer
Donate them to a Children's Hospital, children's ward, or orphanage. You could also take them to a soup kitchen and let someone with kids take home a surprise for the little one.

Where does financial aid money for students come from?

Mary

I work very hard at my job to pay for bills, school, and life's daily needs. Although I understand why my jobless friend should get a large check from financial aid, it bothers me that instead of saving their money for future educational purposes, they choose to spend the money on impulse buys and pretty electronic gadgets. So then it got me wondering, where exactly does financial aid money comes from?

So if financial aid money comes from the government, and taxpayers are the ones funding the government, does that mean that I'm paying for my classmate's spending on iPods, macbooks, and Disney passes?
@ Mr. A$$: I DO ACTUALLY have to pay taxes and do not NOT get funds returned to me on my tax return (like most people). I guess I am paying for financial aid. I think I'll stay on my soapbox a while longer.

Answer
Mary, yes we all are paying for them to buy all sorts of nifty gadgets with our tax dollars just like our tax dollars go to fund and pay for some many things that in my mind is ridiculous (i.e: lining politicians pockets for their own benefits, funding various agencies that are there to help U.S. citizens but help illegals instead, big old jet airliner rides and overly price vacations for the overly paid and useless politicians, etc.).

Sadly students (and I'm not talking just young students, I'm talking all ages) seem to think that if they have money left over from scholarships, grants and other financial aid that it's free reign to spend, spend, spend instead of save as they may not get that "free" money the next school year. My daughter has gotten some scholarships and grants and has money left over but it is set aside for the 2012-2013 school year as according to the FAFSA application she does not qualify for anything other than a loan even though my income went down and nothing has really changed for us from last year other than about being $2000 less. Not sure why it's changed but she at least has the extra funds from her current school years financial aid to pay for the next school year (she attends a local community college).

BTW....though Kyle seems to think most everyone gets an income tax refund he is wrong. I know from experience and I'm a single parent with a single income (very minimal) and a kid in college you'd think I'd get one but it's not always so.

So though it may frustrate you, there is not much you can do. So I say stay on that soapbox because I'm right there with you!

Getting a toddler ready for the beach?

Johnny's M

We are going on a 4 day, 3 night trip to the beach in the next few weeks. I'm a *planner* so I'd like to go ahead and start getting a mental list going as to what I'm going to need to take for Johnny (18 months). This is his first time going to the beach - and I've never really been to the beach with a toddler before.

Any suggestions on what to bring?
Spank me Grandmother - I like how you think.

(LOL)
And.......... No thumbs down from me!

Answer
ahhhhh, lil chubby cheeks is hitting the beach!!! us too we're going june 20th!! i took ayden last year though too when he was one and he HATED the beach!!! hahahaha.. it was too funny... he LOVED the pool at the hotel though!
definitely alot of sunscreen!!!
if your place has a pool i'd recommend getting one of them float things they can sit in, even the one that has the mesh, or netting overhead to block the sun! ayden had a lil truck thing and he loved it.. so much fun.
i'd also say get an umbrella for the beach... you wanna be able to get him outta the sun if you can...
definitely beach toys so he can play in the sand.. he might be a lil shocked by the sand at first cause it gets all over them and they don't know what to do!!!
those fishing hats are great for their lil faces!!
blankets
towles
ummm?? let me think?? i'm sure i can thing of a ton more!!
i'm sure you have a bathing suit for him but grab one of them surffer shirts they're great for the little ones, keeps them covered and great material for being wet!
i big bag to carry all this crap!

one thing i learned about myself when having my child at the beach is it is NO LONGER relaxing for you! hahaha i love nothing more than sitting on the beach in a nice beach chair and reading a book.. no more.. your constantly playing with them, watching what they're getting into, making sure they're not burning, etc.. hahaha.. i was sweating my butt off and i was covered in sand! ha..

oh another thing.. make sure you wear something versitile (spell??) something your comfortable in so you can sit without worrying that your stuff is hanging out! that you can bend, run, crawl, crouch, and pick him up comfortably in!!!
you'll be stressed enough with him you don't want to constantly be worring that your boobs are gonna pop out and if your butt cheek is out!!!! ahhahahaha...

Taking Toddler Camping!

Teegan

She is almost 2yo. We went camping last year and she did really well but she wasn't even one and just starting to walk. Any suggestions on things that I can bring along to keep her busy when we're having some down time? Should I get a couple of new things to play with so she'll stay busy longer? I don't think I'll have too much trouble with getting her to sleep at night (knock on wood) but if I do any suggestions on helping with that? I'm looking for any suggestions and insight from anyone with experience!

Answer
>>Her Entertainment
Ball - 1 should suffice
Books - 3 old, 2 new (Some she can 'read' and some to read to her)
Toys - A few new and a few old
Bring a small play tent for her to play in.
If there is a beach there, bring sand and water toys.
If she has a favorite outside toy, bring that.

>>Bedtime
Blankets - Bring enough to put on the floor (padding) plus enough for each of you to sleep with.
Pillows - Bring 3 - 4
Stuffed Animals
Story - Have a few good ones memorized or bring a bedtime story
All of you should go to bed at the same time. So either let her stay up later or go to bed early.

>>Clothes
Shirts - 1/day + 2
Shorts - 1/day + 2
Long Pants - 2 pair
Socks - 3 pair
Shoes - 1 sandals & 1 tennis shoes
If she is in diapers, 1 pack + wipes.
If she is potty trained, 1 pair/day + 4.
Sweatshirts - 1 or 2
Swimsuit + Swim towel

>>Other
Bring shower towels.
Bring her soap/shampoo.
Bring shower shoes for her.
Bring her a pair of sunglasses and a hat.
Bring 1 - 2 flashlights.
Bring her plenty of snacks like pretzels, crackers, cookies, chips, fruit snacks, fruit cups, jello/pudding cups, granola bars, etc.
Bring her plenty of drinks; water + juice.
Wipes - even if she is potty trained - great for sticky hands.
Bring her disposable sippy cups. That way if they are too dirty to clean in the bathroom sink, you can throw them away.
If she is potty trained, bring her potty chair. This way if she is to far from the bathroom or is scared of it, she can use her seat.
Bring her sunscreen and bug repellent patches. These do not contain harmful deet like the spray does. Look for them at your local nutrition store.
Bring bottled water for her, don't rely on the water there.
Have plenty of hair ties/clips to get her hair out of her face when it's super hot and sticky.
Bring an umbrella.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GENERAL CAMPING TIPS

Waterproof your tent.
Bring plenty of s'mores stuff.
Bring a cooler full of dry ice. Fill it with milk, juice, meat, cheese, fruit, etc.
Bring bread and other foods to make your lunches and dinners. Also bring equipment for cooking over a fire.
Bring a tent thing and a table for your food.
Bring chairs and blankets for around the fire.
Bring stuff to start a fire.
You may want to bring bikes.

HAVE FUN!

DON'T FORGET TO BRING A WAGON OR STROLLER!

What toy can I make using household items for kids 6-12 years old?

natalie

Answer
If they are 6-12 years old they are old enough to make the toy themselves with just a bit of parental guidance. If you've got the room for it you can make a cardboard castle with a washing machine box (appliance stores are happy to get rid of them) or multiple boxes bolted together. You can use half used cans of whatever paint is in the basement to paint them. Older kids could use a utility knife to cut windows. I've seen this done with a refrigerator box, opening up the box so it could be stored flat and have it set up like a staggered storefront.

You could have them build a puppet theater and make puppets from old spare socks and buttons, fabric scraps, etc. The kids could write a script and reall plan a show.

you can do at home science experiments (get a book on ideas, but one is to pour some vinegar into an empty water bottle, fill a balloon up with a little baking soda with a funnel, carefully attach the balloon to the neck of the bottle, keeping the baking soda end flopped over so the baking soda doesn't fall in, then lifting the baking soda end up so the baking soda falls into the vinegar, causing a big fizzy mess and making the balloon inflate from the gas produced. Hope that made sense.

You can make rag dolls.

Kids that age are often interested in cooking; teach them to cook. Not a toy, but something to keep them busy and fun to do for kids.

Age minimums on kids toys... what do you think?

Star is a

Specifically-
Super Miracle Bubbles Bubble Turbine Set- they recommend age 5
Gymboree Bubble Ooodles with Wand and Tray - age 3

Would either of these be inappropriate for an almost 2 year old?
Thanks KM. My thinking is that the wand might be too difficult for a younger child to blow through or maybe squeezing the turbine set would be too hard for small hands. I couldn't figure out if the age minimums are for that or if the manufacturer just doesn't want unattended children swallowing bubbles or sticking their fingers in the turbine/pulling out batteries.
KkA... Please learn to use some critical thinking skills. Lots of warnings are from stupidity and lack of supervision. I'm not going to be handing these to a toddler and then walking away. And you don't need to lecture people on children when asked about a toy... this is for an Easter gift. Of course I know how to play with a child.
lol Des that's half the reason I'm asking. My godson is 3 1/2 now and my memory is starting to blur with what he could do at his 2nd birthday :)

Which kids camera should I get?

Katie 76

We're going on a cruise in the Bahamas soon and both kids are having birthdays right before. They've been asking for cameras and I want to get each one to take pics. They'll be 8 & 10 but never have had cameras before so I don't want to spend over a $100 on a nicer camera. Which have you had better luck with the Fisher Price or Vtech? Will these work well enough for my 10 yr old?

Answer
You can get a good deal on a lower end digital camera, for example:
http://www.officemax.com/catalog/sku.jsp?skuId=21714192&cm_ven=Performics&cm_cat=www.deals2buy.com&cm_pla=Rubberband%20Logo%20120x60&cm_ite=Rubberband%20Logo%20120x60&affcode=performics&siteID=k26451&mid=&cm_ven=Performics&cm_cat=Skimbit&cm_pla=Everex%20StepNote%20ST5340T%2012.1%20Ultra%20Portable%20Notebook%20PC%22&cm_ite=Everex%20StepNote%20ST5340T%2012.1%20Ultra%20Portable%20Notebook%20PC%22&affcode=performics&siteID=k186085&mid=skim115X178
for about the same price, this would still be much better than the 'toy' cameras.

christmas toys for my kids?

Jhoanne

I am going to get the toys for my kids. since we are going to a roughttime we are going to get free from toys for tots. Can i go alone there *(they already have my info). or do i need to take my children. they are 12,9.7,11 years old. I don't want them to fell bad if they are getting free staff.

Answer
I don't think your kids need to go with you. They should have the information on all your children and have some things put aside for them already.

I don't see a reason for the kids to have to come. It might be better for them not to because like you said they may feel embarrassed, and it will ruin the surprise.

You shouldn't feel embarrassed lots of people are having a hard time this Christmas. I wish you the best for the new year and happy holidays.

Those musical keyboards that you think are switched off but suddenly go "ding ding ding dong dong dong ping" at 1am
All and any Dora the Explora toys with sound
Anything that happily churps "try again"
Playmobil toys that consist of 3 millions tiny weeny parts that you have to put together for your child to enjoy - and later find embedded in the sole of your feet causing extreme pain

Have you ever stepped on a toy on purpose to get rid of it?

Sometime you may buy your kid toys that you later find iritating. In order to have a reason to throw it away, have you ever crushed one of them on purpose while walking?

Answer
No... but one time i bought my little toddler sisters the movie Blubber i think it was called...maybe Flubber...idk it was some green goo that was magic or something anyway, the were watching it like a million times a day and then one day when they were sleeping i hid it. I felt bad because they cried for like 10 days but then it was all over.

Any tips on traveling with a toddler (23 month old)?

ckieldy05

We're moving to Florida in 2 months and and we're driving .We'll be in the car for 3 days and my son has never been in the car that long! Does anyone have any tips for me?! SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY PLEASE!

Answer
We got a 4 CD set, the colors are red, blue, green, and yellow, and they have all of the big time toddler/preschooler hits -- wheels on the bus, itsy bitsy spider, it's raining/it's pouring, etc., etc. My daughter loved it, and there were enough songs that it didn't... COMPLETELY... drive us nuts. I think it was called 101 Toddler Favorites (Hits). You can get it at Amazon, it's $13.99. My husband also enjoys Trout Fishing in America's Family music Party. Finger-play songs such as row, row, row your boat and itsy-bitsy spider make my son really thrilled (but I confess I am really, really sick of them) :)

We totally recommend keeping a small box of small toys accessible between the seats so that when your son chucks one toy into the here-beyond and can't get to it, you can grab another one quickly out of the box.

If he uses pacifiers, have a stock of them everywhere. Be able to pull them from car doors, the glove compartment, the magazine holders behind the seats, wherever, because our son loses them in the car faster than we can find them, and Lord help us when he has a meltdown and we can't find a paci.

DVD player is helpful if your son can focus on one.

Tylenol is a must have for the inevitable earache that will arise during the trip. It also has the nice side effect of making the little one sleepy.

Rest stops are necessary for EVERYONE to get out and stretch a while. Try to find ones with grass.

Many McD's have play areas -- those can be welcome for the little ones, too.

Quick remedies -- a circle of scotch tape with the sticky side out, stuck to his finger. Good for a couple of minutes. A rubber band, good for a minute or so. If your car interior can stand it, you can blow bubbles at him from the front seat. Driving at night has it's possibilities, while the boy is asleep. I can't stand this, but my husband likes it, and our kids don't seem to mind. For me, I can't sleep in a car, so it doesn't work for me.

If you can sit next to him, this has worked for me, get the video game "Zoo Tycoon" with the "Marina Tycoon" expansion pack. You can show him all sorts of animals on the laptop computer, teach them to do tricks, and let your son look at the animals. My son loves to look at the zoo tycoon animals. Unfortunately, he also likes to press the buttons. (If you bring a spare keyboard, you can both "play" at the same time).

Keep him hydrated with a spill-proof sippy cup, we've ended up with lethargic dried-out kids before.

Snacks -- "GORP" is a family favorite -- Granola, O's (cheerios), Raisins, Peanuts (you can make them peanut m&m's if you want) -- high energy, has protein and carbs. My kids do in fact eat Luna bars, which have a lot of protein, so that's helpful to us, may or may not be to you.

Good luck to you,
Take care,
J

PS, one last thing, found out as an oops last year, they CAN get sunburned through the window, so put sunblock on even though you'll be in the car.

What age do you think girls should start playing with Barbie?

Sasha N

And what age do you think they stop?
Is Barbie suitable for a 5 yr old girl and a 7 yr old girl?

Answer
I also wouldn't give a Barbie or any other doll with small accessories to a toddler, but a 5 year old & a 7 year old is another story.

Dolls don't give girls negative self images or perpetuate stereotypes, that is a bunch of nonsense. I am 50 years old, grew up with Barbie, my friends, my sisters, my nieces & their friends ALL played with Barbie & NONE of us have eating disorders, poor body image or any thing else.

Of course, we were lucky enough to have parents who didn't put us on diets when we hit the chubby stage (which most kids will grow out of with proper nutrition & exercise), didn't force us to wear contact lenses in grade school because "boys don't like girls who wear glasses", didn't buy us padded, push up bras when we were 12 & never made us feel as if brains were NOT as important as looks.

I have worked in various forms of retail for 20 years & the stuff I have heard & still hear parents (especially mothers) say to their young daughters breaks my heart. Most recently, a mother who was dressed like Pamela Anderson told her daughter (who was maybe 6 years old) "you don't want that dress, it is too little girl looking. WTF? The child IS a little girl.

Let kids be kids & let them decide when they are done playing with ANY toy, whether it is Dora, Barbie, Hot Wheels or anything else.

Help with my dog destroying my toddlers toys?

Meghan

I have a 3 year old min pin who has unending energy. She never went through a puppy stage where she ate any of our stuff, but ever since my son was born 17 months ago she started stealing his belongings (mostly socks) and has become increasingly aggressive with his things that she steals. Recently, she's moved on to hording all of his Little People toys (he has about 50 of these little people that we keep in a basket). She steals them and chews their limbs off, and it's impossible to get it away from her without her going into a rabid fit. This isn't related to her needing to be walked more. We spent the entire weekend outside and the park & on walks, and even when she's tired out she does this. How would you respond to these acts? We've tried a few tactics but usually I just tell her to sit... which she'll do, and usually drops my son's toy. I take it away, and try to get her preoccupied with one of her own toys. It seems as though rewarding it in that fashion just encourages the behavior though? Any negative attention we give her definitely makes her more hostile. Help please :-)

ps.... we live out in the boonies and there aren't any professionals that I've found, or I would've taken her into one by now for a 1 on 1. Petsmart is the only training facility around, but do you think a group class would do her any good? She knows basic commands.
We also have the Biter Apple stuff. If we tried that could it harm my son in any way?
Thanks for answering guys. Sorry it's so long, but whenever I ask a Q in this section people seem to jump down my back if I don't have all the info out there :-)

Answer
Min pins ... they do tend to take over if you're not a strong leader. And don't get me wrong here, just because she knows a few commands and does most of them most of the time doesn't mean she see's you as a strong leader. It just means that her desires match yours most of the time.

It would be best if you could get into an obedience class with someone that was CGC (canine good citizen) focused, but being out in the boonies, that can be difficult. A basic obedience class at petsmart - well, that's a toss up and would depend on the experience of the person teaching the class. Sometimes you get people with a lot of experience, sometimes you get the guy that went to a 6 week course and is now teaching obedience. Certified does not mean experienced but ... you can always talk to their trainer about their experience and make a decision based on that.

But what to do now - well, understanding your dogs point of view will help a little. Those toys smell like you and the baby. This makes them very appealing to the dog. He's not tearing them up out of spite or jealousy or any of that - he's tearing them up because they smell good and ... it's fun. And let's face it, anyting on the floor can be viewed as "his" until you've made it really clear that it's not.

Drop it and leave it. Those two commands are ones you're going to really want to work on. It can be a little tricky because the dog can start to learn that if he picks up something you don't want him to pick up, he gets a treat for dropping it. To avoid that, I don't use "treats." I use an exchange toy. A toy that the dog really likes and will drop other things for. So if the dog has the kids stuffed toy, you get the dogs favorite squeeky toy - you tell the dog to drop it, when he drops your kids toy, he gets his favorite toy.

If your dog fetches at all, you can continue to teach drop it by getting two of what ever he's fetching. Ok, you have a ball in your mouth, but I'm not going to throw this other ball until you drop THAT ball. But once that other ball is dropped, you immediatly get another ball.

It's a little bit of doggy psychology. When you tell them to drop, they get the thing they want taken away. You have to kinda convince them that when you tell them to drop, the next thing they get will be better. Treats don't work because the treats are gone in a second and you still have the desireable object. Can you see what I mean?

As far as some of the other possessive behaviors - I think you can work on some of those at meal times, using his food. No free lunches for a while. I know it's time consuming but, measure out the dogs kibble and make him work for every bite. Sit's, downs, spins .. whatever. No free lunches for a while. Another affective method is to measure out your dogs food into something other than it's normal dog bowl. Set it's empty dog bowl in it's usual spot. Make the dog sit and wait for you to place a kibble or two into the bowl then tell it ok before it can eat it. Repeat for it's entire meal. That's a real fast way to gain a little respect from our K9 friends.

Anyway, good luck!! And please check around. Even out in the boonies you can sometimes find someone that's really dog saavy and willing to help you train your dog.

Apparently the sand is dry when it comes out of the water, but people don't like the toy because it's messy, smaller than in the commercial, sand mixes together, hard to clean up, stuff like that is why its considered a rip off. And btw I don't know if they still have it, but acmoore and other craft stores used to sell something like aqua sand like maybe 10 years ago but it was cheaper. I don't remember what it was called, but I remember seeing it when I was little.

And I don't know why the other person is saying moon sand and silly bandz are a rip off I thought moon sand was great and what good things could you expect from silly bandz that would make them a rip off? I personally think bendaroos were the biggest rip off lol.

How much money should a single parent have before the baby is born?

Q. My belief is that a single mother can raise a child as well as two parents if she tries hard enough... the only thing I can't figure out is money! These days women are often choosing to become single parents but do these women have a lot of money already saved up? What kind of jobs do they have?

Obviously it depends on location, but how much money should a woman have in the bank before she chooses to become a single parent? How much money should she make per month if she wants to be "comfortable" financially?

All this is assuming that the woman is strong enough to handle single parenthood etc, I'm just wondering about the money aspect.

Answer
Some of this depends on how you're going get to be a single parent. If you're going to do artificial insemination, you should have enough cash to cover two tries. IVF is about 10K per try without insurance, and mine covered 80%, so we saved for two full IVFs and 1 implantation. (We got pregnant naturally after IVF #2) Adoption is also about $10K, but some employers help with that (like IBM).

Baby costs - we did that on a shoestring, using an existing dresser (3 drawers high) for him and as a changing table. We put diapers in one drawer, lotions and a non-skid pad on top. We did buy a crib / toddler bed for $300, and a stroller for $200 (used). We did not buy a bassinet - Dr. Spock said a cardboard box would work, and it did.

I tried to breastfeed, had problems, so formula was about 1K the first year. If I hadn't breastfed or used a warehouse club generic formula, it would have been at least 2K. Diapers is maybe 2K / year. Clothes can be from $300 (all used) to $1000 each year.

Childcare is the big expense. We were able to do it at home the first two years, but I think my friends were paying as much as $1500 per month, in Raleigh NC - relatively cheap.

So, a single mom should
- Have on hand: $5 - 30K, for:
- Getting pregnant costs (0 - $20K, depending on insurance)
- pregnancy and birth costs (3 - 10K, depending on insurance)
- Baby basics (1 - 2K, depending on gifts, used availability)
- Make enough to rent or buy a 1br place, plus:
- food for self ($300/mo?)
- Gasoline, utilities (?)
- Child care (1 - 3K / mo)
- Child food and diapers ($350 / mo)
- Toy budget ($100 / mo) (we didn't want lots of toys, but couldn't stop ourselves)
- Debt payments (school loans, car loans)
- Enough for your other needs (clothes, haircuts, etc)

This is at minimum - if you make $500 / month more than the minimum, you should be in very good shape. You can also save up a year's worth of ongoing costs in advance, and child care can be tax deductible with a child-care spending account.

To give you an example, he's now 2yo. We have a household income of about $70K, a 3br house, 1,100/ mortgage, $400/mo utilities, $500/mo to retirement, $500/mo for childcare 3 days a week, $400/mo school loan payments, $600/mo groceries, $300/mo saving, no car payments. We're squeaking by - no dinners out, no xmas presents for the parents - because we're saving up for house repairs.

Good luck, and kids do just fine with single mothers who have the financial resources to care for them. Dual role models don't have a big effect, really - it's all about the financial resources.

Does anyone know of any good toy spy gear for kids aged 7 and above?

Anastasia

Hi,
My younger brother's birthday is like in a week and I still haven't worked out what to get for him (he's going to be 8 if it helps). He asked for some spy gear he saw recently in a TV ad. And, as any kid of his age can't remember what the name of the thing was - does anyone know of a camera device that is able to transfer the recorded video to a watch-looking device that a kid could wear and see whatever is happening in a place where the camera's hid? Sorry if that's a bit confusing but that is how he described it to me. I tried to look for it over the internet but unsuccessfully.
If anyone heard of such thing could you please tell me where to find it? And if not - I'd still be grateful to anyone who could tell me of any children's spy gear that could be a good replacement...

Thanks you in advance.

Our group are hosting a Spring Festival for children under 6 years old. It'll be at daycare center and we want to plan some games and activities for little kids to do. What's some event we could do and that are not expensive? Our theme involved something with nature. Any ideas?

Answer
make giant butterflies! :) I done this with the children who I worked with in reception class of a school and they loved it. We found the instructions online, unfortunately I'm not able to find and link it to you as I don't have a laptop atm, just my mobile.. But the basics of it are that you get lots of news paper, put a few sheets together, then fold into triangles for wings, then staple up one side and leave the other open, repeat with a second wing, and do the same for the body but in a roll shape, remember to leave one side un stapled. You can then get the children involved scrunching up lots of news paper balls which they can then stuff the butterfly wings and body with, once that's completed you staple up the other sides. The children then can paint and decorate the pieces. Leave to dry then assemble the parts. :) you could also make paper flowers using sticks (you could even do a nature trail and get the children to identify flowers and plants on an activity sheet for inspiration, and collect twigs on the way) and use coloured tissue which can be cut into circles, fold into a semi circle then fold again, then creatively chop around the edges (crinkle scissors are good for this) make very small cut at the point of the folded circle, and finally feed the stick or twig in the hole, and tie the in place flower with glittery string or glue it. You can also do baking, make chocolate birds nests out of shreaded wheat and melted chocolate and get some little toy easter chicks or mini choc eggs to place in them. Of course you need to take account of any dietry requirements of the children. :)

Why is or now was Jake Locker the top QB prospect in th 2010 NFL draft?

Ramus

I dont understand how he is the top player when he never went to a bowl game, national championship game, no college awards, not involved in the heisman race. I didn't even know who he was until yesterday on ESPN.

Answer
It is called tools. He has the best set of tools such as arm strength, mechanics, ability to read progressions, footwork, pocket presence, etc, etc. etc.. Did you know who Matt Ryan was before he became the 3rd overall pick a couple years ago? He won pretty much the same pile of awards as Locker. Or how about Joe Flacco? He went 18th overall and never even played on a national tv game let lone win any awards. But I bet you have heard of Troy Smith who won a Heisman and 7 other major awards and played in a National Championship game. He also went as the last pick in the 5th round...behind 8 other QBs including such notables as Jeff Rowe (Nevada) and was so bad in camp that the Ravens traded up to pick Flacco the very next year. Graham Harrell was a Heisman candidate and record setting QB, challenged for and won several awards and went undrafted (he has gracefully landing in the CFL....as a backup). The NFL is a tools game and most of the kids who compete for major awards play for dominating schools where the talent at every position is usually better than the opponent...that usually makes ones resuts inflated. Or they play in gadget offenses (spread) where they utilize the talent differentual to their advantage....wont work in the NFL as has been proven time after time. Jake Locker offered the best set of tools to be a top player in the NFL. He also announced he will return for his senior year so none of this really matters anymore. Jimmy Clausen has not done any of the major award stuff either but is now widely considered the best prospect coming out by all the scouting bureau's (and most of the so called draft experts).....he has the tools scouts look for.

What have been your favorite movies of 2010?

Aussie123

Any genre, any language...

What makes the list of the best in 2010 for you?

Answer
Alice in Wonderland14.
This curious 3-D adaptation proved to be the perfect fit for visionary director Tim Burton, who once again captured solid performances from Johnny Depp (hilarious as the Mad Hatter) and Helena Bonham Carter (deliciously chilling as the Red Queen), as well as newcomer Mia Wasikowska, also seen in this summer's 'The Kids Are All Right.' And with its eye-popping visuals and clever take on Lewis Carroll's novel, it's no wonder Burton's 'Alice' has grossed over $1 billion worldwide.

The Other Guys13.
After a couple of hiccups, Will Ferrell returns to fine form in this hilarious buddy-cop comedy opposite Mark Wahlberg. The film ranks among Ferrell's best collaborations with director Adam McKay ('Talladega Nights,' 'Anchorman'), and has enough laughs and surprises to keep audiences satisfied well past its awesome end credits. Best of all: It's even better a second time.

Splice11.
Not quite horror, not quite sci-fi and not quite romance, this movie manages to transcend genre. Full of suspense, laughs and shocking moments, 'Splice' isn't afraid to ask the difficult moral questions that most movies seek to avoid.

Kick-Ass9.
The box office for this comic action flick never lived up to the fanboys' hype, maybe because watching 11-year-old Hit Girl (the eye-opening Chloe Moretz) efficiently (and heroically) slay people wasn't everyone's cup of tea. But for those who took the violence for what it was -- a deliberately exaggerated part of the film's comic-book world -- 'Kick-Ass' was every adolescent's fantasies come to life and made awesome. In short, it kicked ... well, you know.

Despicable Me8. '
This colorful animated flick is filled with plenty of slapstick gags, clever gadgets, quirky spy humor and great voiceover work from funnyman Steve Carell. It also features the weirdest-looking minions, whose goofy antics steal the whole show.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World6. '
Based on the popular comic book, this cult film, about a teen (Michael Cera) who must defeat seven men to win the heart of his crush, was clearly made for the videogame crowd. But don't let its hipster style fool you: At its core, 'Scott Pilgrim' is a fun action movie that appeals to a much wider audience than one might expect. (Like these beloved movies, perhaps it'll find a better audience outside the theater?)

The Kids Are All Right5.
In a season of epic blockbusters and sequels, this little indie that could, about the children of lesbian parents who track down their sperm-donor father, stood out as one of the summer's best films, thanks to excellent direction, writing and acting, especially from the sure-to-be-Oscar-nominated Annette Bening, in her best performance since 'American Beauty.' The kids may be 'All Right,' but this hilarious and touching comedy is superb.

The Secret in Their Eyes4.
This Argentinean masterpiece (an Academy Award winner for Best Foreign-Language Film) follows a retired criminal court investigator as he revisits a 25-year-old unresolved murder case. It's a stunning tour-de-force that explores the depths of human emotions -- love, fear, loneliness, yearning, hate -- disguised as a police procedural mystery that effortlessly juggles romance, comedy, suspense and political commentary.

How to Train Your Dragon3.
A heart-warming story about a boy and his dragon, 'How to Train Your Dragon,' about a Viking teenager (Jay Baruchel) who befriends his dragon, is a genuinely emotional film that features lots of exciting and dazzling adventure sequences. Better yet: Unlike so many films released this year, its 3-D is actually worth the extra price of admission.

Inception2.
From the great mind of director Christopher Nolan, 'Inception' was arguably the most talked about and revisited film of the summer, thanks to its twists, turns and much-debated cliffhanger ending. With a dream cast that included Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard and Tom Hardy, this box-office smash had audiences thinking and debating in a season normally reserved for mindless entertainment. The ending may still be up for debate, but 'Inception' is the real deal.

Toy Story 31.
With expectations higher than 'Avatar's' box office, it seemed impossible for 'Toy Story 3' to live up to its predecessors. But leave it to Pixar to craft a threequel that is every bit as good as 'Toy Story' 1 and 2 -- a joyous, entertaining and heartwarming film that will make you laugh as much as it will make you cry. Once again, Pixar went to infinity, and beyond our expectations, and in doing so, created the best film of the year so far.

What advice would you give to a new mum about raising kids?

Arlette

What advice would you give to a new mum about raising kids that you wish someone had told you? My babys due on Christmas Day!

Answer
1. You won't need half the crap that you bring to the hospital with you. And it will be a pain in the butt to carry it all home.
2. There are tons of stupid baby gadgets out there. Don't get suckered into things like baby wipes warmers, knee-pads for crawlers, etc.
3. It will be much harder than you ever expected, and so much more rewarding than you ever expected.
4. Let your partner help. Insist that your partner helps.
5. Even with a newborn, you need time alone. Give the baby to your partner, a grandparent, anything, and get out of the house for an hour, ALONE! Get a pedicure, buy a book, or just go grocery shopping by yourself, at least once a month.

Two years ago my husband, my son and myself had a very tight bond with our pitbull named Winter. She was very sweet and well behaved, house trained and playful. She was excellent with our 6 month old son, she allowed him to touch her face (muzzle, eyes and ears). She was not food aggressive or toy possessive or overly protective. Living in NYC made her very energetic, however.

I say WAS because a year and a half ago my family moved to South Carolina and because we were not yet established in a home that accepted dogs, Winter has stayed with a family friend as an outside dog. Our son (2 and a half years) seems to have lost the connection with Winter and she herself seems stressed by both the move and the fact that she has been away from my husband.

Is there a safe way (and with minimal stress) to re-introduce our dog to both our toddler, our new house and our family without overbearing both her and the family?

Answer
If I were you I would bring a trainer to your home this situation can be nothing more than putting them together and then it may be alot more. I wouldn't take the chance your family is worth more than a visit from a Pro Trainer and I mean a Pro Trainer someone who trained Police dogs or Military Dogs.

I want to buy my son a bike for the summer but I"m not sure whether I should buy a bike or a trike. He's 3 and kind of tall for his age, but he's not very physically strong or coordinated. Ideas?

Answer
Three is still really young for a bike. Some kids don't learn to ride a bike until they're like 6 or 7. I suggest a classic red tricycle. Every kid needs one at some point in their life. Check out some from the selection at Arsa Toys (http://www.arsatoys.com); they're really reasonably priced.

Where should I take my 2 year old in phoenix, az and surrounding areas during the summer?

alisunwhit

It tends to be very hot in the summers in AZ, does anyone have any good places to take a 2 year old so we can get out of the house. Any place would be great, thanks.

Answer
Makutu's Island, maybe - 2 is a little young but there is a toddler area that can be fun if you go when it is not crowded. There are a couple of indoor play villages (miniature towns), Kids Town Play Center in Tempe has smaller buildings good for crawlers and toddler sizes and Imagination Avenue in North Phoenix has larger buildings that 6-year olds can walk into, toddler cars, a fenced area with toddler toys for really little ones, and a bouncer. Toy Town is in Ahwatukee but only open till like 2pm, never been personally.

You might check out Jeepers in Mesa. There are rides (indoor) like a merry go round, mini airplanes, mini spinning cups, a play house and toddler climbing area, and a sand box. If your little one is closer to 3, you might try miniature golf, there is a new indoor place on 32nd & Greenway called Mini Golf Paradise. Splash Playground at Tempe Beach Park is outdoor but a good summer activity for little ones. The Wave Pool at Kiwani's Recreation Center could also be fun if you are willing to go in the water as well.

The Mesa Museum for Youth is great for young kids, a museum with things meant to be touched and a special area just for those under 5. See their website for possible classes your child can participate in as well. Nearby is the Mesa Southwest Museum if your little one is into dinosaurs.

The library is always a fun free indoor family activity, good chance to spend some time together. Most Phoenix libraries have children's areas where it is okay to make some noise and there are toys as well as books, the Cholla library near Metrocenter is great for this and free events and storytimes or puppet shows as well (see website).

If your child can sit still for 20-30 minutes, the Great Arizona Puppet Theater does shows on the weekends for children usually based on fairy tales. For a fee, you could enroll in some classes at the community centers or private locations like dance or art or gymnastics. Most of the malls have free play areas for little kids now too. The one at Fiesta Mall and Arrowhead Mall are both good.

There are a few websites that list activities, play groups, and seasonal events you can check as well.

Sims 3 - How to have a good relationship with my toddler?

Bunksy

In the Sims 3 my toddler has a very good relationship with his mother but a terrible one with his father. Anything the mother does with him gets their relationship up fast, but with the father it goes down if anything. What can I do to build a relationship between father and child? Chatting doesn't help =[

Answer
Hello,
I know how you feel that the mother somehow has a better relationship with the toddlers than the father...but here are some things to help get their relationship higher:

-Every time you can, when the toddler needs something have the father take care of it.
It will be good bonding time that usually hightens their relationship. If the father is unable to take care of their needs though then have the mother (or other teen and older sim) take care of it.
-Have him teach the toddler to walk and/or talk and/ or potty train the toddler.

-Always in spare time (when toddler isn't sleeping) snuggle, chat, tickle, toss in air, read a book to, play with(like playing with them while they are using the blocks game or the musical toy) any time you can or just when they need social interactions.

--Be patient.
With time their relationship will flourish, and I will admit it is somewhat difficult to grow a strong relationship with the child when they are in their toddler years, but as they grow and as long as you continually interact and bond with the child as much as you can, the relationship will grow very strong.

Hope this helps you!

What products sell best in your grooming shop?

Jessica

We are thinking about starting a small shop in our dog grooming shop and are wondering what products are the 'hot sellers' in other people's shops. We would definately sell the most commonly asked things: brushes of various kids to work with different coat and skin types, combs, and cologne.

We have tried to sell stuffed toys, tennis balls, rawhide bones and bandanna's with absolutely no success after two years. We are located in a very small town so we need to be able to accomidate the middle class rank. Nothing too frilly or expensive would ever sell. (costumes, custom photography, dog furniture, ect.)

Any recommendations?

Answer
Price-wise, you simply can't compete with the big box stores on most items. Therefore stick with the basics or the unique. Basic grooming supplies - brushes, combs, etc. do well because we recommend them. Same with dental care items and ear care products. Various flea & tick products did well because owners wanted to take care of the problem in one stop rather than go to a big box, too. We sold extra and holiday themed bows and bandanas, and fancy treats, too, mostly as impulse items. We tried to carry items that the big box stores didn't such as breed stationary and notepads, breed magnets, trivets and other gift items. Want to move those toys and rawhides you've had sitting around a while? Try repackaging! For the holidays we'd buy fancy boxes and put together an assortment of treats and toys and sell it as a gift box!

Jekyll and Hyde, I'm telling you. She was always a good kid - kind, gentle, repsonsible, helpful. Now? It's gotten ugly around here. She's stealing (junk food, money, toys from her brothers), she's lying about the stealing as well as less significant things, and she's started dressing up A LOT. I mean lipgloss, jewelry, 3-5 outfits a day, and spending an hour in the bathroom in the morning.

As if that isn't enough, I talk to her about these things and she glares at me. Seriously. Come to think of it, she has been a little more emotional lately too. She says she stays up too late reading, and she's feeling whiny these days.

What is going on with her?

No, there is nothing going on in her life that I can identify. no divorce. No bullies. No bad influence friends. School's out for the summer. She's usually home with me all day, and her best friend practically lives here. She's not lonely.

Anybody have a 9 year old daughter that's kinda freaking you out a little?
OMG. Seriously? You think this is her period coming on?

Well, . . . damn.

wow.

Answer
Sounds like PMS to me. My daughter was like that every month for about a year before she actually started having periods. And no 9 is not too young. My niece turned 9 in February and started having her period in May. I would have a set time for lights out to make sure she's getting enough sleep. I told my daughter that she can feel cranky without taking it out on everyone around her. Easier said than done, of course. But now she has a journal and I think she just writes down all her complaints in there. But I don't read it so I don't really know!! Good luck.

He is not a small kid, he looks to be that of a 9 year old so a smaller board probably would not suit him.

some big size trucks/cars. Little tikes makes some for 9.99 and they double as sand toys

some blocks

a ball pit

a ride on toy

something they can hold and practice walking behind.

Leap Frog has a little touch leap pad that is fun for them. My son got one last year at Christmas. He was 9 months old and he loved it. He is going to be 2 this March and he still loves to play with it.

Some things we're doing for my son who will be 21 months on Christmas:
Sit and spin, art easle with supplies, books, a stuffed curious george, a little tikes lap top, leap frog fridge phonics, some black and decker tool box toys, some tub toys, some clothes and little tikes slide.
I'm sure he get a ton more than that from extended family members and grandparents for sure, but those are some of the things we're going to do.

How can I keep my 1 year old occupied during a long car ride?

We are going to be taking an eight hour trip and our son does not do well on long trips. He sleeps during his usual nap time but that still leaves about five hours of time he will be awake. Toys don't work because all he eve wants to do is get out. Anyone have any ideas to keep him happy?

Traveling at night is an option, but I would agree with the portable DVD player. I drive 45 minutes to and from work everyday and my son goes to daycare in the same place. He was always a terror in the car so we purchased a portable DVD player for the car and we play the wiggles. They are colorful and sing and dance so it keep him occupied. We went to target.com and found an inexpensive portable DVD player for around 89.00 it is made for kids as it is thick and sturdy and the buttons are on the tops so he cannot get to the buttons. It has been a life saver! Of course I know several Wiggle DVDs by heart, but that is okay. I tried other things like toys and stuff to draw, but all he does is throw them.

Also, we had to fly on a long flight when my son was 9 months old and our pediatrician (who is very strict with medication) told us we could give him a small dose of children's benadryl for the trip. It worked on the way there, but on the way back he was just overly tired and cranky. The dosage depends on your son's age and weight.
