How many toys does your toddler have? Or how much of your house does your baby occupy?

Jenny

I'm wondering how many toys other people give their toddlers. You can estimate.
Each stuffed animal counts as one toy.
A fisher price barn with all the animals I would count as one.
Each hotwheels is one toy.

You can figure your own system. I'm wondering if we're nuts or if most people have this many toys. We have a pretty big house and we've turned the dining room into a play room for books, letters and numbers with some stuffed animals and cars. It's also where my piano is and we have a sofa where I play guitar. The entry area has his play village with his play houses and tunnels. The village spills over into my office but it makes a nice door and he doesn't go past that line.

The kitchen, living and breakfast area are relatively toy free. Maybe a toy or two that he's playing with and his rocking horse stays in the living room.

Upstairs, his room is another play room which is nice in winter as it is much colder downstairs. We have more books, letter and learning toys, oodles of stuffed animals, Fisher Price garage and Farm and a variety of other toys.

Just curious to see the toy situation in your home. My mom says she's never seen a child with more toys.

Answer
My 2 year old doesn't have a lot, but she has enough.
Our house is a little different. Our main living space (3 bedrooms, 2 bath, kitchen/living/dining) is only 900 square feet all together - high ceilings in our A-frame make it feel bigger, though. We've got a basement that adds another 900ish square feet, but we only really use that when it's warm. it's only heat is a wood stove. So we don't have a lot of room for lots of toys.
In the kitchen area, I've got a cooking stand with a shelf that has 2 tubs of art supplies/playdoh, which she shares with her 5 year old brother
In the living room, she's got a large dollhouse (we fixed up my old one, for her, for Christmas) and in a corner I have a medium sized bookcase (3 ft x 5 ft) of puzzles, games and toys, 2 kid recliners with a little end table that has a few books. there's also a basket of books by the couch (not that anyone usually notices) We also have a large rubbermaid of blocks. Not necessarily fancy, expensive blocks - some were melissa and doug, but the vast majority are old decking cut up that a neighbor brought over. They love those the most.
In her room, which is pretty small, she's got a laundry basket of stuffed animals and dolls. She has a small play kitchen and a little bin of play food/dishes. She's got a small bookshelf with her books and a few random toys. She's got a few dress up clothes in there as well. And that's about it for her. We don't have oodles of anything.

What are good toys to buy for babies with eye problems?

rainbowbri

My friends baby was born with eye problems, she's only 4 mths old so the doc says it's hard for him to make an exact diagnosis, but she has alot of trouble focusing on things it seems . I'm not a mom so I'm not sure what toys do what, but my friend is strapped for cash so I wanted to get her a couple of things that might be helpful maybe help the kid learn to focus better? any suggestions? brands? types? specific toys?
Thanks.

Answer

For a holiday program my church is organising, the theme is detectives. The age group is prep (age 5) to 12 year olds. For every day, a 'detective' will be comming to talk to the kids (an adult dressed up) For the 5 day week, we will need 5 different detectives that primary school age kids would know. We have already thought of Nancy Drew and Sherlock Holmes. Can u think of some other ones. Thanks.

Answer
The Hardy boys, Dick Tracey, Scooby doo, Inspector Gadget, Detective Conan.

What advice would you give to a new mum about raising kids?

Arlette

What advice would you give to a new mum about raising kids that you wish someone had told you? My babys due on Christmas Day!

Answer
1. You won't need half the crap that you bring to the hospital with you. And it will be a pain in the butt to carry it all home.
2. There are tons of stupid baby gadgets out there. Don't get suckered into things like baby wipes warmers, knee-pads for crawlers, etc.
3. It will be much harder than you ever expected, and so much more rewarding than you ever expected.
4. Let your partner help. Insist that your partner helps.
5. Even with a newborn, you need time alone. Give the baby to your partner, a grandparent, anything, and get out of the house for an hour, ALONE! Get a pedicure, buy a book, or just go grocery shopping by yourself, at least once a month.

I'm looking for a little tykes play structure for my 21 month old or something similar. Just wondering what kind of toys you guys have in your back yard and what you like and don't like. I don't wanna buy something she will outgrow too soon. Do you have a toy your kids love??

Answer
My 24 month old has a Naturally Playful Clubhouse Climber from Step 2 (its huge...has a slide, tunnel, climber stones, bridge, playhouse area with fold down table, stools, and chalkboard), a little tykes sand and water table, a power wheels jeep, water squirting bug (like a sprinkler), balls and golf clubs, trucks for playing in the sand and the yard.

My son loves the Step 2 climber and asks to play on it everyday. He will be using it for a few years!

Best thing for kids to do outside in the summer?

Missy

Whether it's a water toy, or a playground, what do your kids enjoy and what are there ages?

Answer
That depends upon what is available in your area, your budget, and the ages of the kids. Playing in water is fun (sprinkler, pool, lake, etc), riding bikes, playing tag and other yard games, sports, going to parks. Be careful to limit exposure to sun and heat during the middle of the day though.

I have 4 neices/nephews from 3 to 10. Where's a good place to get ideas for gifts for Christmas? And is it better to buy online or fight the lines of Black Friday?

Answer
There are many lists put out by different toy stores, kids magazines, etc.

There is the Toys R Us Fabulous 15:
http://www.santaschristmascorner.com/toys-r-us-fabulous-15-toys-r-us-2012-holiday-hot-toy-list/

Also, K-Mart has it's own Fab 15 list:
http://www.santaschristmascorner.com/k-mart-top-15-christmas-toys-for-2012-part-1/

There are others, but I don't know the URLs off the top of my head.

As far as online vs black friday, I personally shop online. One, I don't like to get up early. Two, I don't like being trampled by people trying to get the 3 TVs for the special price. And Three, you will usually find bargains just as good or nearly as good online if you keep your eyes open.

I am moving in 9 days, I need to know some ideas for the most efficient way to pack up all of our stuff.?

hahaha

My family has a lot of stuff, it is me my husband and 2 kids.

Answer
Planning

How To Pack

Use the proper packing materials. It will pay off in the long run! Sturdy boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and packing peanuts can all be purchased at local moving or shipping companies.
Wardrobe boxes and other specialty boxes can be found there too. Sturdy boxes can also be retrieved from wholesale companies, at no charge, after a shipment. Other great types of reasonably priced padding for your boxes include wadded-up newspaper, old pillows and blankets.

The following is a list of tools and materials to make your packing go more smoothly:

Razor knife and/or scissors
Note pad
Dark, water-resistant marker
Boxes of all sizes
Packing tape
Bubble wrap
Packing peanuts

Pack one room at a time, labeling each box appropriately (on top and side) with a description of its contents and which room the box belongs in. Also label boxes containing breakable or sentimental items with "Fragile." Keep a detailed list of what items are packed in each box to make unpacking easier.

Empty all drawers of breakable or spillable items. To safeguard against unnecessary damage, it's a good idea to put all furniture knobs, feet, screws, etc. in one container that you can keep with you so the parts won't get lost.

Do not pack flammable goods or heat-sensitive items like candles, records, audio and video tapes, computer disks, propane tanks, aerosol cans, oil-based paints, and certain cleaning fluids.

Wrap items individually and always place a layer of crushed paper in the bottom of the carton for cushioning. Fill empty spaces with additional crushed paper.

Make sure cartons are firmly packed, with heavier items on bottom and lighter ones on top.

Pack according to the season if you'll be putting some boxes in storage. Mark the boxes accordingly

Put heavy items in small boxes so that they're easier to carry.

Make sure the items you'll need first are loaded in last when packing the truck. You'll make access easier for the things you need (ie. kids toys, kitchen items, telephone and radio).

Use common sense when loading your truck by keeping in mind the size, sturdiness, and weight of your boxes.

Plan ahead for what you'll need the first day after your move. Packing a separate bag with your toiletries, a change of clothes, etc. will prevent unnecessary scrambling or a run to the local store.

Move on a weekday, if possible. Banks, utilities and government offices will be open if you need them.

Planning

Pack Like a Pro

Start packing the right way

How you pack your things can determine whether you ever see them in one piece again.
Before you decide to do your packing yourself, consider the responsibilities. Sure, it takes time and energy to get the job done right, but doing it yourself can be a real money-saver, even if you're paying a mover to load the truck. For example, if you've hired a professional mover, you can still opt to pack all or some of the goods yourself, thus trimming the price. To find out just how much you can trim, ask your moving coordinator when you get an on-site estimate.

Packing Guidelines for Your Professional Move
If you decide to do some of the packing yourself, you'll need to have everything properly packed and ready for loading when the van arrives. In other words, all packing must be completed the evening before move day. Only the things you'll need that last night, the next morning and immediately at your destination should be left for last-minute packing.

As for how you pack—that will be expected to meet specific standards. Moving company representatives will inspect your boxes and if they think items are improperly packed or cartons are susceptible to damage, they may refuse to load the items until they are repacked.

A word to the wise: Generally things from garages, attics and storage spaces, such as holiday decorations and sentimental items are the ones that need to be repacked. Look for cartons that are torn, ripped, soiled, will not close or cannot be sealed. Replace those with fresh boxes. Another repacking giveaway is if you can hear the contents rattle when you shake the box. In that case, add more insulation.

What Should You Pack?
Obviously, not everything will fit in boxes. As a general rule, furniture and major appliances will be wrapped and padded by your moving professional. Items requiring professional disassembly and/or crating (such as slate pool tables, chandeliers or large glass table tops) are best left to the professionals.

Box Basics
Use new, high-quality packing materials specifically designed for moving to better ensure your items will safely arrive. Professional moving cartons come in a variety of shapes and sizes that are specifically suited to fit a variety of household goods. Look into barrels, for example, as they are great ways of loading a lot of odd-shaped items into one large container.

Other Supplies

Bundles of packing paper (clean, unprinted newsprint)
Bubble wrap, tissue paper or paper towels for delicate items
Rolls of PVC tape (don't use masking tape or cellophane tape)
Tape dispenser
Broad-tipped markers for labeling
Scissors or sharp knife for cutting cartons
Notebook and pen or pencil for listing contents of cartons as they are packed
Labels or stickers for identifying boxes

Wrapping How Tos
Before packing cartons, you'll need to wrap most items to protect them from scratching and breakage. There are a variety of materials available, including bubble pack, foam peanuts and tissue. However, most professionals use bundles of clean, unprinted newsprint (available at your moving supply store).

Start by placing a small stack of paper on a flat, uncluttered table or countertop. Round glasses and jars can be rolled up in two or three sheets of paper; always begin from a corner of the sheet and fold the sides in as you roll. Large or odd-shaped items require a similar technique. Place them in the center of the sheet and bring the corners together. (It may be necessary to flip the item over and wrap it again from the other side.) If in doubt, use more paper! When the corners come together, secure them with tape.

Before packing each carton, line the bottom with a few inches of wadded paper for padding. Then place large, heavy items on the bottom and lighter, more fragile items on the top. Plates, books and things of a similar shape, should be loaded vertically to utilize their own maximum structural strength. Don't overload cartons; keep them to a manageable weight. Fill in any voids and top off loaded cartons with wadded paper. Then tape cartons securely to avoid shifting while en route.

Labeling Hints
Imagine packing away a truckload of boxes and then having them delivered to your new home. How can you tell what box goes where? Because you've labeled them. Follow these tips to thwart confusion.

Use a broad, felt-tipped marker.
Clearly mark your name, the room it should go to and contents on each box.
Indicate "FRAGILE" on delicates; "THIS END UP" where appropriate.
If available, include your bill of lading (or invoice) number on every box.

Tips From the Pros
Most movers suggest you start with out-of-season items. Next, pack things used infrequently. Leave until the last minute things you'll need until moving day. Here are some more helpful hints.

Empty drawers of breakables, spillables, non-transportable items and anything that would puncture or damage other items.

Pack similar items together. For example, don't pack a delicate china figurine in the same carton with cast-iron frying pans.

Keep all parts or pairs of things together. For example, curtain rod hangers, mirror bolts and other small hardware items should be placed in plastic bags and taped or tied securely to the article to which they belong.

Wind electrical cords, fastening them so they do not dangle.

Wrap items individually in clean paper; use tissue paper, paper towels or even facial tissue for fine china, crystal and delicate items.
Colored wrapping paper draws attention to very small things that might otherwise get lost in a carton.
Use a double layer of newsprint for a good outer wrapping.

Use newspapers for cushioning only. The ink can rub off and embed itself onto fine china.

Place a two- or three-inch layer of crushed paper in the bottom of cartons for cushioning.

Build up the layers, with the heaviest things on the bottom, medium weight next and lightest on top.

As each layer is completed, fill in empty spaces firmly with crushed paper and add more crushed paper to make a level base for the next layer, or use sheets of cardboard cut from cartons as dividers.
Cushion well with crushed paper; towels and lightweight blankets may also be used for padding and cushioning. The more fragile the item, the more cushioning needed. Be sure no sharp points, edges or rims are left uncovered.
Pack small, fragile, individually wrapped items separately or a few together in small boxes, cushioning with crushed or shredded paper. Place small boxes in a single large box, filling in spaces with crushed paper.
Limit carton weight to about 50 pounds. Avoid overloading cartons but strive for a firm pack that will prevent items from shifting; the cover should close easily without force, but should not bend inward.
Seal cartons tightly with tape except for those containing items that must be left open for the van operator's inspection.
As you finish with each carton, list the contents on the side of the carton (for easy viewing while stacked) and in a special notebook. You might want to number and/or code the cartons as well.
Indicate your name and the room to which each carton should be delivered at destination. Tape a sign on the door of each room at destination corresponding to the carton labels so movers can get the cartons into the proper rooms quickly.
Put a special mark (the number 1, or the letter A) on cartons you want to unpack first at destination.

I am looking for a small train set, not a kids toy. I am looking for a train set that you would use in a christmas village. I found one awhile back at a doller store but can not seem to find one anywhere now. I do not want it to be a christmas theme though (no santas riding on the train) just a normal train. I need it for a craft. Thanks in advance.

Answer
As the first answer stated, go to local and chain hobby and craft stores. Also google search the company Lionel. The make model scale trains. You can try Lemax.com but I am pretty sure you will only find Christmas themes but doesn't hurt to try. Also never hesitate to search Ebay, Craigs List, or other bidding sites. Good Luck!

Everything from the toys to the kind of carpet and paint. I also really need some good online sources for this.

Answer
Well, the sites below are a start...One of the fav Dr Offices for my Son had 3-4-5 foot size plywood cutouts in bright colors lining the walls, giraffe, pink elephant, zebra etc. In one large corner was a carpet covered wooden physical play area with large holes and ramps for the kids to crawl in and out of. The top platform was about 4 ft high by about 6 ft wide for a sitting area, when they reached the top. Easy enough for the parent to get their kid. Had wide stairs along the wall side for toddlers to climb to the top with a small railing a parent could reach over. In another corner was a child sized table with books and crayons to keep the minds and hands occupied. Toys were various for different ages in large containers and baskets. Seems like if we had to wait for an hour or longer for the Doctor to catch up on his appointments the time went by very quickly. AND big EYE signs posted that the parents were responsible to keep an eye on their children, several of these would be appropiate.....Commercial bright colored carpet with extra padding in the play area for sure, Primary colors in 6-8" stripes horizonal above the solid grey walls where the animal cut outs are and add some fun stuff in the ceiling, that is always forgotton and left boring.....Good Luck (How fun to do this)

How do you stop the housework getting overwhelming?

Q. The chores seem to be piling up non-stop!! i have 4 kids and a busy lifestyle, which I love and wouldn't trade for anything - but just cannot seem to get on top of all my housework! The washing is all clean - but the pile is HUGE to fold and put away (6 people, 6 pairs of socks per day x 7 = 42 pairs of socks a week!!! - not to mention all the underwear and other clothes).
Besides that - the general cooking, cleaning, tidying up, and I want to help the kids with homework, do some baking and have some fun and spend time with others...
What ideas for organising the cleaning better? Any tips of perfect chores for kids? (ages 12, 9, 4 and baby). They only make their beds, lay the table, clear the table and pick up their toys is really all they do at the moment... they are good kids and will gladly help out - but how to structure it?
Any ideas of storage or tips on how to keep the toys tidy in the family room? Help, I'm really getting overwhelmed

Answer
I know how you feel. This past summer I had 7 kids plus myself and my husband in our home. One of them was terminally ill on a vent that required alot of care (my daughter may she rest in peace 9-3-07) The ages of the kids were at the time 17-15-14-13-12-7-1(the 14yr old and 1 yr old are here full time, 17-15-13yr old my sisters kids, 12yr old my husbands ex gf's son, 7yr old is my sd)

Anyhow the older ones basically cleaned up after themselves. Rule in my house you arent playing with it or using it and its on the floor it goes in the trash. Took my SD 2 times of having her things thrown away before she knew I ment business. I did NOT ask any of them to help me with my son (1) They all put away their own clothing and my SD has been doing this since she turned 5. They all had to maintain their rooms and that includes DUSTING and Vacuuming. As for the main living area as with most moms before I went to bed it was picked up, twice a week doesnt take me no time to go through and dust. The bathrooms maintained daily after my own shower and they ALL knew to clean up after themselves.

As for laundry..Holy buckets! At first I was going to stick with the "one day a week" which I did when all the other kids were not here and it was just myself, my husband, daughter and son. Well that didnt work I was doing laundry all day. And I folded as they came out of the dryer. So instead I did a load a day and it wasnt so bad on me. We also had baskets in each room and in some rooms we had 2 baskets one for socks/underware the other clothing. Even now my husband and I have 2 baskets in our room and one in the laundry room and my sons room.I'll be honest though I was so glad when everyone left I could finally relax!

The meal prep was also something else as i was use to cooking for 3 I was now cooking for 10! Dinner was at a set time they were to be here for it (17yr old and husband worked so came in later) if they were not here they were to fend for themselves when they came in. Dinner dishes was the LAST dishes I did for the day, again anything used after dinner they had to wash and put up themselves. When it came to grocery shopping and putting stuff away my husband said "if you plan on eating any of this help put it away" even at age 5 my SD could put up the fruits, carry cans to the pantry, knew where everything went so she could help sort. And she'd always say "I did such a good job didnt I" and I'd respond "Yes you did ty for your help" and she was proud of herself

My SD's mom thought it was a bit "concentration camp" but then again her house is a mess. But it worked for us and next summer when everyone is here again and a yr older they will help again. I started doing my own laundry at age 9 I remember it fondly made me feel "grown up" your oldest is 12 and I think with a little time devoted by you he/she can do their own laundry as well as help with the meals. Dust the living room and vacuum.

Also where is your husband in all this? Mine works 60 hrs a week but is more then willing to help out when we have the "herd" here and now that its just down to the 3 of us he still helps me out. As for storage my sons toys and he has a TON of them are in baskets large wicker baskets or a Toybox with sliding doors. They are thrown all over within 20 minutes of him being awake at naptime I pick them up, when he wakes they are again all over, at bedtime he helps me pick them up and he's only 16 months old! My SD who is now 7 does the same thing so I started to "rotate" her toys she doesnt miss them she hardly played with any of them just the same ones over and over and thats helped with the mess up in her room. With my son if he doesnt play with something "out of sight is out of mind" get the idea?

All I can say is do not try to do it all in one or two days. Do a little every day and it wont be so overwhelming

Gloe Bear (lights up Different colours i think will be great for bedtimes.
Leapfrog Cook And Play Potsy.

Ok so i am still looking for other things but i don't want to go over the top with presents. :)
Thanks.

Answer
Three-year-olds have a penchant still for putting everything in their mouths, so you'd have to be careful with the moon sand to be sure she didn't eat it. I hear Leapfrog is good for teaching kids things, so if you want educational toys, that might be a good thing to have. :)

All in all though, a three-year-old is going to mostly be happy to have anything at all. They don't care what it is, so long as they're safe, warm, and loved. It's easy to see you love your kid, so I'm sure she'll love you and whatever you get her just as much.

I need some help with homemade clear glass ornaments?

Christine

I am wanting to make ornaments with those clear glass ornaments for family and friends. I need help finding items that I can put inside the ornaments for each person. I need to make two ornaments for my children's teachers, two ornaments for two babies, one for my husband(Hunting), one for a good friend, one for a grandmother(loves nativities) one for a grandfather(loves NASCAR and cooking) on for a brother in law ( NASCAR) one for a sister in law nine for library co workers and two for our new dogs. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
....Do you want to buy the small items to put in the glass ornaments, or do you want to make them?
....And not sure if the glass ball ornaments you're asking about have wide openings (or even open in halves like the older plastic ones), or just have small openings (at top) so that all the pieces would have to fit through that small opening (poured, rolled, pushed, or just small enough, etc)?

The ideas on this page at my site for teachers, babies, and men in general, could give you specific suggestions about those groups:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/gifts_men_teachers.htm
And you may also want to check out this page on making snowglobes (with "things" in them) too:
http://www.glassattic.com/polymer/outdoor_snowglobes_fountains.htm

For buying tiny items, you could look at places like:
...baking and cake supply stores should have all kinds of little things to put on cakes
...party stores will also have lots of little things, cheap
...craft stores for the small items sold at Christmas, etc, for earrings or other jewelry (or regular jewelry "charms", items for tiny xmas trees or xmas villages--including nativities), little things for wedding decorations/etc or for garlands/artificial greenery decorations, or in the baking aisle, etc.
...item-buttons from fabric stores, etc.
...toy stores for tiny accessories for dolls or action figures, or for tiny cars, etc.

For making any of the items yourself, you could use polymer clay or an air-dry clay (especially bread clay since you're making miniatures and want the finest detail)**. You can find loads of lessons, ideas, etc, at my site for almost all of those kinds of items (in addition to the page linked to above) on these pages:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/kids_beginners.htm (click esp. on > Sculpting)
(.........HAD TO MOVE THE 5 LINKS that were here, to below under "Sources"...........)
http://glassattic.com/polymer/books.htm (click on "Mini-books")... or make simple ones covered with felt like the miniature books on this quilt square I made (I used small sections of balsa wood as the centers and marked faint lines on the edges as "pages"... actually these are the ones I chopped off so they wouldn't stick out all the way, but had made some as earrings without making smaller:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/89542171@N05/8149199883/in/set-72157631914664907 )
...here's an example of similar whole ones made with polymer clay (cover and block of pages) --not mine
http://naamazamir.blogspot.com/2009/11/mini-polymer-clay-books.html

Of course you could always just find or print out pics or cartoons*** of things like car racing, dogs, books, etc, and perhaps gluestick them to pieces of cardstock that you could then gently roll (around a pencil or marker) to insert in a small hole.

** air dry clays (homemade ones like bread or salt dough clay, or purchased ones like Creative Paperclay) and polymer clays (Premo, Kato Polyclay, etc.)

i mean those whole fantasy with big bang and evolution... there so many logical fallacy in there, i mean if there is big bang then who create big bang, who create condition that allow big bang to emerge ???

also evolution.., cmon atheists, dont you agree that pink dinosaurs are for toddler ?

start praying already... and behave yourself... mm..okey ?
@MM
and your avatar ???
do you try to confuse me?

Answer
Lol.

The big bang just explains the observed expansion of the universe. It doesn't try to explain what caused that expansion, nor does it say there was nothing before hand. In the theory the singularity was there first. And might have being there "forever"* before starting to expand.

Why a who? Presuming a who and making up answers instead of just admitting "we don't know yet" is childish.

And what have pink toy dinosaurs got to do with evolution?

*As much as forever an means anything before time itself might have existed.

What does your two year old like to do with his toys?

Jenny

We just bought our two year old a wooden toy train track set on a train table. He likes to make crashes and then yells, "Pandemonium! Run away!!!" He also likes to get his dinosaurs in the mix.

Answer
your toddler sounds very advanced for his age. hes kind of acting like a elementary school boy haha. my daughters 20 months and usually plays with her toys as real as she can ex. food goes in the pot and car drives on the floor type thing. but maybe he just has a lot of imagination he could be the next big movie director.

Has your kids toys ever went off by themselves?

top kids toys this christmas

top kids toys this christmas image
Q. I'm a little parnoid because the house we lived in before was haunted for those who believe me. Now were living in a apartment & this 1 particular toy(riding toy) keeps going off during the night by itself. How could this happen? AND has your kids toys ever done the same thing?

Answer
Oh yes this has happened a lot. Very creepy.

But there are a few reasons for this.

My son got a remote control air plane when he was little. It was preschool type toy and he would hold the controls like a steering wheel and drive the plane around the house.

We noticed sometimes while watching tv the airplane would make noises when no one was near it. It would beep, wheels would turn & so on. Other times the tv would flicker too or get static on it.

Turned out that the remote for the airplane and our tv remote were on the same what is it called frequency. My husband discovered this himself. He's an electronic engineer.

Another time in our old house during the middle of the night we'd hear a preschool Mr. Potato head game going off by itself. We'd hear out of the blue "Opps, I lost all my parts can you help me?" lol Drove us crazy! The toy didn't have an off button & would time out making itself go to sleep. It would go on & off by itself often. At first thought it was our dog or even our daughter sneaking out at night bumping it. But we'd put it on top of the tv stand out of reach and it would still do it!

My daughter loaned the toy to our neighbor one weekend. Late one night around 11pm our neighbor knocked on the door in his robe. He looked tired and had the game saying it would shut up. lol

Turns out it was the batteries were low. We found replacing them more often when the screen dimmed it stopped doing it.

We've had other toys too that do this. Toys that light up and play music are creepy. We had a stuffed bear that would start to play Twinkle Twinkle little star on it's own.

I do believe in haunted houses. I grew up in Columbus, MS. I saw it profile on tv a few years ago as one of the most "Haunted towns in MS." Dateline or Primetime profiled it. I grew up being one of the kids in the victorian houses for tour groups. We'd make butter, decorate a christmas tree, sew and stuff like that while tour groups walked by.

All the homes in the area were haunted. My best friend & I often changed clothes in a room where a baby had died. You would see the form of the baby on the feather bed. The maid would fix the bed before tours and sometimes while standing there changing we'd see the form appear by itself. It was a high bed so we thought maybe something was pulling on it from under it but that never happened.

I grew up in an area where part of civil war took place. Ditches were dug all through out neighborhood. They were ditches the soldiers would hid behind while they fought against the north. Plus many indians died in the area too. We had a famous trial near us & as you walked through the woods trees marked in red paint were where indians had been buried. Very creep.

My 14yr old says we have ghosts in the house. We have an old piano from the mid 1800s. My daughter says she often sees a little girl around 10 sitting near it at night. The idea scares me to death. lol

I've often smelled and felt my grandfather's presence. I smell Old Spice & Peppermints.

Now I don't believe ghost can move things or touch things. Ghosts are mentioned in the bible after Jesus dies and he is seen in ghost form. http://www.jesusreligion.com/ghosts_bible.html Ghosts are more the spirit that moves our human body. We pass easily from Heaven to Earth.

My brother in law is a Baptist pastor and we've often spoke on this subject.

Demons are the ones who attack, move things and throw things. Demons, I believe are after the spirits who belong to God. Demons can trap the spirits. Demons also want to attack us and use us to attack others.

you can't believe in the good with out believing in the bad

Edit - "I do believe in ghosts but they don't play with little kid toys, that's just silly. " - very true. It is more the engery not ghosts can't touch things but their energy can.

I watched a tv show that showed a demonologist talking to a ghost child who was trapped by a demon. They tested the power of the little girl to make sure she wasn't a demon. she was asked to turn and move the flashlight which she didn't. Then she was asked dim it which she did.

Why are there never any kids playing out on christmas day anymore?

johnston1

This is so sad, ive lived in my area for 20 years, and up to about 3 years ago every christmas day kids would be out on the green with their new toys, not even the snow brought them out this year.
gone are the days when children are let out to play. I do live in London so maybe that's why. computer games must be the new toy.

Answer
I'm in Manchester and it's the same here kids play out in the street I live in most of the time but at christmas you barely see them and rarely on christmas day. I think they are all too busy now with their TV's, Wii's,Play stations,Lap tops etc. You never see kids with new bikes on xmas day anymore.

How come couples need two paychecks when in the 60s they didn't?

best kids gadgets 2010
on gadgets for kids Best Ideas on How to Buy Cool Gadgets for Your Kids
best kids gadgets 2010 image
Q. Regarding the whole daycare debate, women always argue that they can't afford to stay at home because they need two paychecks...which is true. But why is it that prior to about the 1970s or so most families got by fine with only the father working? What changed in the economy or society to demand that the vast majority of families have two wage-earners?

Answer
The income distribution has changed, Average real (inflation adjusted) wages for men in non supervisory jobs peaked in the 1970's and has only wobbled around since then. What increases in total compensation there has been was eaten up by the cost of benefits, especially employer provided heath insurance. However the wages of the top 20% of earner have increased substantially and they they determine peoples expectations of what constitutes the "good" life. Houses are now bigger filled with more gadgets, families have two cars instead of one, more people send their kids to college, heath care can do more to make you healthy so we buy more of it, etc. To fill the gap between expectation and incomes wives went to work. And since now the majority of families have two earner, this standard of living has become the new normal.

However during this period the real GDP per worker has increased buy more that 50% because of increases in average productivity, and if the current national income were distributed the way it was in the 1970's the median income would be amount $10.000 more per year. The high earning tech worker and professionals got their share of the extra income, but the top 1% who earn over $300,000 a year increased their share of income from about 11% to 24% and much ot that went to the very hing income group, the top 1/10 % now earn over 1.2 million a year some of them getting 100's of millions.

see http://www.visualizingeconomics.com/2010/12/29/highest-paying-jobs-in-the-us-2005-2/

Edut. Changes in the tax laws are also partly responsible for the increase in the number of mothers of young children who work. In order to work they must pay someone to care for their children, so the look at marginal tax rates on the additional income and cost of child care, to decide whether working is worth it. In the 1960's there was no deduction for child care expenses and the tax rates for married couples were not much different than for singles

Why is or now was Jake Locker the top QB prospect in th 2010 NFL draft?

Ramus

I dont understand how he is the top player when he never went to a bowl game, national championship game, no college awards, not involved in the heisman race. I didn't even know who he was until yesterday on ESPN.

Answer
It is called tools. He has the best set of tools such as arm strength, mechanics, ability to read progressions, footwork, pocket presence, etc, etc. etc.. Did you know who Matt Ryan was before he became the 3rd overall pick a couple years ago? He won pretty much the same pile of awards as Locker. Or how about Joe Flacco? He went 18th overall and never even played on a national tv game let lone win any awards. But I bet you have heard of Troy Smith who won a Heisman and 7 other major awards and played in a National Championship game. He also went as the last pick in the 5th round...behind 8 other QBs including such notables as Jeff Rowe (Nevada) and was so bad in camp that the Ravens traded up to pick Flacco the very next year. Graham Harrell was a Heisman candidate and record setting QB, challenged for and won several awards and went undrafted (he has gracefully landing in the CFL....as a backup). The NFL is a tools game and most of the kids who compete for major awards play for dominating schools where the talent at every position is usually better than the opponent...that usually makes ones resuts inflated. Or they play in gadget offenses (spread) where they utilize the talent differentual to their advantage....wont work in the NFL as has been proven time after time. Jake Locker offered the best set of tools to be a top player in the NFL. He also announced he will return for his senior year so none of this really matters anymore. Jimmy Clausen has not done any of the major award stuff either but is now widely considered the best prospect coming out by all the scouting bureau's (and most of the so called draft experts).....he has the tools scouts look for.

What are some skills and hobbies girls like to see guys know and do?

best learning gadgets for kids image

Aaron

For example how some girls like guys who could play guitar,or can cook, or guys who are good with kids.Girls, what skills or hobbies do yous personally like to see a guy do/know?

Answer
A guy who's good with kids is always a big bonus, there's something very attractive and endearing about a man who can show a kind, paternal and nurturing side towards children (including and especially children who aren't genetically his own)
As another poster said, it is instinctive for most women to look (at some point) for "father material" in a man so if he is a good provider and can interact well with children then he instantly scores some major points.

I like to see guys who are a bit adventurous in their hobbies, I'm an outdoor girl at heart and I'd love to see a guy that can enjoy hiking, camping, dirt biking, cave spelunking, diving, someone who could keep up and enjoy a bit of roughing it and risk taking. If I could find a guy that would go storm chasing with me on a major road trip across the USA, who'd stand on the ice and watch the northern lights or who'd stand next to the lava streams on Hawaii while we dared to get as close as possible then I'd consider him more than perfect.

If he's a guitar player than great, can he teach me? I have a guitar but I'm not too good yet, I could teach him keyboard/piano in exchange.
I admire guys that have the patience to teach as well as listen and learn, open-mindedness is a must.

Someone who understands the concept of personal space, he does his thing and I do mind, we don't always have to do them together and hours, days, weeks or even months apart does not necessarily mean that our relationship is going to the dogs.

I'm also a major geek/nerd at heart, I love gadgets and electronics. I could happily spend hours torturing some poor Sim on my computer or blowing the head off some enemy in a first person shoot-'em-up, I do not consider him a loser if he likes Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel, DC etc. and do in fact enjoy a guy who's passionate in his interests.

Honestly I don't really care what type of interests he has as long as they're not illegal or seriously taboo and he's genuine about them.

For them to let their 3 & 4 year olds to come over unsupervised and steel my kids toys? I've tried explaining to them the difference between keeping an eye on my good kid, and suddenly having two more little heathens to look after. The best I get from them is after their kids have been over for about a half hour, they'll yell over if it's ok.
I often have to let them know when their kids are are riding their big wheels down the road.

Which sale has the better deals for this year 2009, the day after thanksgiving or day after christmas day?

yo

im very excited for this upcoming black friday already especially those $200 hp laptop and hdtv at bestbuy and target. but im kinda holding back on spending big for these week's sale because christmas sale might have better deals since stores are to clear out items every end of the year. but in your experience in the previous years, which sale has the better deals? especially for electronics, kids toys, and clothes? thanks!

Answer
I think the sales are better after Christmas. Items of choice should be in stock and less demand. I have found great sales on toys and other items I bought (ridiculously under priced) and I wish I had waited. I think the Thanksgiving sales are just a way to get you in the store and after Christmas is a need to get rid of merchandise.

What is the best way to baby-proof a house?

best toddler toys parents magazine
on Educational Toys For Kids | Parenting Advice
best toddler toys parents magazine image

Savanah

My daughter is 4 months old and so close to crawling that I don't want to wait any longer to baby-proof. I also have a 5 year old son that has lots of little toys, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Answer
First off talk to your son about his toys and the safety of the baby. Heres the best trick to teach him right away:

Give him an empty toilet paper roll and explain that any toy or small item that fits through this roll is the size thats dangerous for the baby to choke on.
I got this tip from a parenting magazine based on the size of a babys mouth and throat. I gave each of my kids their own empty roll and sent them to work. It worked out well for my family. Make sure your son keeps his door closed at all times to ensure that his "big boy toys" are always seperate from the baby's things. Remind him to keep the bathroom door closed as well.

My philosophy on baby proofing is different than a lot of people. I usually only keep the dangerous chemicals out of reach and leave all the other cabinets unlocked. I feel that putting cabinet baby locks on every drawer and cabinet will not protect the baby at all. In fact it will give the parents a false sense of security thinking "well she cant even open that door, its locked" I had a toddler dismantle a door lock and reassemble it and hand it to me once. I decided right then and their that those things only work for so long and the day they figure out how to undo it, you may be distracted and not notice right away. I stayed close enough to say "NO" in a loud, clear, voice until the baby, even at 4-6 months can clearly understand what it means. Then they learn about where its ok to play and not ok.

Finally, I have one room in my house that I have altered until I feel it is completely safe and when I need to turn my back on a baby and dont want to put him/her in a swing or playpen, I use this room, Im talking about short periods of time here. But that room is where I keep the toys for chewing and make sure cords, windows, appliances, furniture, everything is stable and/or safely out of reach.

Another trick I read about once is to get down on the floor on your back and stomach and see from your baby's level. The world looks much different from there. A plant stand that is unstable might be just the place for her to pull up, it may topple on her. A book on a shelf can be pulled off and fall on the baby. A battery has rolled under the couch, out of the sight of the adults but within perfect reach of the baby. A cord attached to a floor lamp . Anything that you can see from her level is a potential attention grabber for her. Remember that she is just learning about her surroundings and everything is a toy and goes right to her mouth. Good Luck, Im sure you will do a great job babyproofing your home.

What do I need to take a toddler to the beach?

I am taking my 2 year old boy to the beach for the first time. What do I need to buy and take with me?

Answer
From the time my daughter was born she has loved this. We always with out fail bring the following:

*hydocortizone cream ( toddlers are sensitive and the sand in the diapers get itchy)
*at least 4 towels
*shovels and sand toys( can be found at any local retailer)
*magnifying glass (to look at all the tidepool creatures)
*lots of sunscreen
*two changes of clothes
*a camera and film

*****this is an excert from parents magazine******

Sand and water are essential summer ingredients, and though they're a natural part of the beach landscape, they'll delight your child in any setting. "Playing with sand can teach a 1-year-old an amazing number of things," says Clare Lerner, a child-development specialist at Zero To Three, a nonprofit organization that promotes early-childhood development, in Washington, D.C.
Try burying toys and letting your child excavate them, or act as foreman while your toddler pushes trucks through a mini construction site. Simply filling and emptying his pail will reinforce concepts such as object permanence -- that things stay the same inside or out of a container. To cool off, splash at the water's edge, as long as there's little or no surf. Never let your child walk in water past his knees, and never leave a child unattended near water -- not even momentarily Or carry your child as you run close to the waves, and then run back before a wave catches you. For another water game, let your child see whether objects float or sink.

gurlie23

Me and my friend are babysitting for our awesome teacher on saturday. she has three chlildren aged 4,6,8. How do I make them Like me, and remember and want me to come back?

Answer
It's been a long time since I babysat, but I used to fill a tote bag with a few age-appropriate toys, games, art supplies, etc. (For example, I remember throwing in Happy Meal toys, Mad Libs for older kids, and coloring books.) The kids always loved it because of the novelty and would often run straight to the bag, even before their parents left. Use what you know about the children to tailor the bag to their interests. But don't focus so much on getting the kids to like you that you overlook what their parents need from you (like making sure they observe naptimes & bedtimes and don't gorge on junk food).

Any suggestions from creative mommies out there?

I am opening a daycare in my home in about 6-8 weeks and I've already got lots of toys for toddlers. I am already thinking about letting them paint/color but what else can I do with them? Any ideas? They are in the toddler age group. Thanks!!! I will have only about 3-4 tots.

Answer
I once did a summer job at a daycare centre with that age group, they're lovely to work with!

Storytime - Little kids LOVE books :)

Hamabeads - Little beads that you iron to make shapes. I think they're designed for an older agegroup but I did them when I was 3-4 :D

Animals - Kiddies love pets so try buying or hiring a small pet like a fish or hamster

Playdough (I don't know if you have that in the US, it's a bit like plasticine and easy to make) is always popular. Buy or make a couple of batches in different colours :)

Jigsaws - A few easy jigsaws are fun. Note that piece often go missing!

Dress-ups - Every little girl's dream!

How do you keep a spotless house with 3 kids?

Girliegirl

Kids are age 7, 5, and 3
Shlynn at the moment that's exactly what I am doing but I still have the clutter I'm trying to organize yet cooking dinner every night and keeping the house clean (not spotless) is exhausting. I notice I swept about five times a day as well as mop that often too. And a load of laundry every day or every other day sigh

Answer
We have 5 kids and our home is pretty spotless, and yes it's lived in,not treated like a jungle gym. There is a difference. We don't restrict the kids from going into any part, but we do restrict what occurs in the rooms, in the house for that matter.

The kids are small so we eat breakfast and lunch in the kitchen and dinner in the dinning room. They aren't allowed to have toys all over. Aside from the nursery, We keep the baby's toys in ottomans in the great room and family room only. Running is for outside. They can run around on the lower level, some! Five and up, they clean their own rooms.

I run a Roomba vacuum over night in the great room where we tend to gather. We don't go to bed unless the kitchen is cleaned and we don't leave in the morning unless its picked up. We don't come downstairs in the morning with unmade beds. Five and up are responsible for cleaning their rooms.

Set some rules and a cleaning schedule.

I remember complaining about how everything was the previous generation's fault when I was a kid also.

With Christmas coming up, I don't want to buy my kids more poisonous junk from China. If eveyone starts boycotting Chinese made crap, we can make a difference in getting manufacturers to make good, safe, quality toys in the USA!

Answer
