Activities for the kids at my son's 1st bday party?

Stacy1889

My son is turing one next month and we are throwing him a party. We are planning to have atleast 10 kids most under the age of 5.... what kinds of things could I come up with to keep them entertained so theyre not bored an getting into trouble?
I was thinking about having a table with coloring books and paper so they can color and things like that. Along with having tons of toys in the play room for them. Anything else?

Answer
-Yes a table of crayons with coloring books,
-a few old cookie sheets with some unscented shave cream (mens) and some finger paints put a small squirt of mens shave cream on one corner of the tray and the small amt. any color of finger paint in another corner of the tray and let the kids draw in the mix. You could even go to a dollar store and get aluminum cookie sheet trays for like 4/ $3 type of thing. The shallow trays and just keep washing them out with a garden hose. Adult supervision is required. let the moms know to have the kids wear old clothing. Lots of paper towels and wet ones and just let the kids enjoy squishing it between their fingers. Its a great tactile experience for all the little kids to enjoy and they will have fun while learning and discovering new things about their world!
-A kid sized plastic slide, a few xlarge bouncy balls and just let the kids play with those
-play dough and cookie cut outs are always fun. You can go online and look up how to make your own playdough. Keeping in mind that it will be a bit time consuming to make. And you will need some baking ingredience so just be prepared for all this otherwise a boat load of play dough for all.
-A bunch of toys that maybe lying around your house like little bikes, blocks, trucks, books that are age appropriate will always do just fine as well and just set up a gated area for them to all play in at some point. That way the moms and dads will have some time to relax themselves.
- Not sure if its warm year round where you live but if it is you can get a kiddie pool and fill it up a bit and float plastic boats and just let the kids play that way. Another adult supervision activity as well. As you will already know.
-Guess whats in the box yet another tactile game-You get a small card board box and wrap it in chrismas wrapping paper or birthday paper tape up the box and cut a small square hole on the top big enough for the child to put his hand in. You have to put objects in the box and have them guess what they pick up but no peaking :) If they guess right they get a sticker or any small age appropriate prize. Some items you can put in the box could include a crayon, toy cars, feathers, coins, popcorn pieces, paint brushes, sponges, paper clips etc.

A one yr. olds attention span isnt very long as you know already so just keep some of these fun activites on hand. Dont expect every kid to enjoy every activity its just not possible but like i said before lots of toys if you cant provide the listed activites above will do just fine.

Top Attractions in California? 10 points?

Q. I am Thinking to Travelling to CA on a vacation , Is Los Angeles the best Part of California?

and what's the top tourist attractions there?

Thanks very much.

Any answers would be appreciated.

Answer
There are literally hundreds of things to do here in LA. Here is my list of âmust seesâ for families with kids. Visit as many as you have time for.:

Disneyland: The Happiest Place on Earth. Half a billion visitors canât be wrong. #1 Destination.
Universal Studios: A theme park that grew out of a studio tour. #2 Destination.
Even if you donât visit Disneyland or Universal Studios Tour, Downtown Disney District and Universal City Walk are very fun places to visit for shopping and eating. And theyâre free to visit. If youâre adventurous, try the indoor skydiving (www.iflyhollywood.com). Itâs a blast!

Hollywood: Hollywood Boulevard is ready for its close-up, thanks to years of urban renewal and renovation. Most kids wonât really like the Walk of Fame or Chinese Theater, but they might enjoy the people dressed in costume who stand in front of the Chinese Theater. They will pose with you or the kids, and expect tip money. Right across the street is the El Capitan theater, which was restored to its former glory, is owned by Disney and shows Disney movies.

Other theme parks include Knottâs Berry Farm and Six Flags Magic Mountain, which are both more geared towards the fast-ride teen crowd.

Olvera Street/Union Station: Olvera Street is the birthplace of LA, and it emphasizes our Mexican heritage. In addition to the Avila Adobe (oldest building in LA), you can eat at some pretty good Mexican Restaurants, do a little shopping, and taste a churro. If you donât want to go to Tijuana, this is as close as it gets without going there. Union Station has great architecture from a bygone age. Also, you are 2 blocks from Phillippeâs (see below).

Santa Monica Beach and Pier: Great beach scene and a classic seaside amusement park, complete with antique carousel that has been in a lot of TV and movies. (The Sting and "Three's Company" come immediately to mind).Bubba Gump Shrimp Company right on the pier. Kids love the rides on the pier, and the games. Or just playing in the sand.

Griffith Park - Home of the Los Angeles Zoo, Griffith Park Observatory, Travel Town, the Greek Theatre, Pony Rides and Griffith Park Railroad, Merry-Go-Round, and Gene Autry Museum of Western Heritage. While the zoo is not as good as San Diego Zoo, it is still good, and enough to entertain most kids. The Pony Rides and railroad are for the younger kids. Travel Town is a rail museum where youâre not SUPPOSED to climb on the engines, but kids have been ignoring those signs for 40 years. The recently renovated Observatory is a lot of fun. Or you can just play in one of the picnic areas in the park. There are plenty of toys to play on.

Los Angeles Science Center: A favorite museum for kids for over 40 years. Exposition Park, by the Coliseum.

Discovery Science Center, Santa Ana: The big cube right next to I-5, exit Main St.

Los Angeles Childrenâs Museum: Located in the Hansen Dam Recreation Area, currently under construction. Original location near the music Center is closed.

La Brea Tar Pits/Paige Museum: What kid doesnât like dinosaur exhibits?

Aquarium of the Pacific, Long Beach: Lots of fun marine exhibits for kids to explore. And the mac and cheese at Bubba Gumpâs across the street is good, too.

Legoland, Carlsbad: This is more of a San Diego attraction, but kids 10 and under generally love it.

Places to Stay:
Since LA is so spread out, there is no single place that is close to EVERYTHING. Most people who come here tend to stay in Hollywood, Santa Monica, or Anaheim. In Hollywood, I recommend the Orchid Suites, Hollywood Celebrity Hotel, or Holiday Inn Walk of Fame, all near Hollywood and Highland. In Santa Monica, the Holiday Inn Santa Monica is close to the pier and reasonably priced. In Anaheim, I recommend the Howard Johnson (HoJo) Anaheim, and the Candy Cane Inn. There is also a nice place in Burbank called the Best Western Media Center, very close to Warner, NBC, and Universal Studios.

Places to eat:
In-N-Out Burger: Multiple locations, best burger in LA, ask anyone.
Pinkâs Hot Dogs: 709 N. La Brea, just north of Melrose. You might even see a celebrity. Maybe.
Tommyâs Chili Burgers: Look for the shack, an LA tradition. The original location is at Beverly & Rampart, a couple miles west of downtown.
Canterâs Deli: 419 N. Fairfax, between Beverly & Melrose. Near CBS, you might spot a celebrity.
Phillippeâs: 1001 N. Alameda. Great roast beef sandwiches. Near Union Station and Olvera Street. Watch the mustard, itâs hot.
Titoâs Tacoâs: Voted best tacos in LA, even though itâs in Culver City. King Taco is a good alternate if you can deal with East LA.
The Pantry: Corner of Figueroa and 9th, downtown. Huge portions, they never close, GREAT steak and eggs.
Medieval Times and/or Pirateâs Dinner Adventure: Dinner and an adventure show, both are on Beach Blvd in Buena Park, you get to eat with your hands.

safe and fun ride on toys?

nick damon

Hi. I'm thinking about buying my 13 year old boy a fun electric ride on toy for Christmas. What would you guys recommend? I'd like it to have a rechargable battery, something safe, and fun. We live in New Jersey so can you also state what the rules are here? Thanks

Answer
It's not electric but my kids *LOVE* their Power Wing. It's safe, fun and simple to learn how to ride and do tricks.

What was this riding toy called?

keepontruc

It was a large round plastic wheel that a kid sat in and powered it by hand with handles on the big wheels on each side. It could move in all directiions, depending on how the kid maneuvered the wheels with his hands. I thought it was called a moon wheel, but not sure. This would be from the mid-70's. I think it was orange with black wheels.
It was a round wheel with a seat in the middle. There were large wheels on each side of the seat. The side wheels had handles to turn them and make the toy go in any direction, and even spin around. I think it was called a "moon wheel". This was not the Big Wheel trike; it was an entirely different type of riding toy.

I need kids birthday ideas (ages 5-7).?

Tim M

I am going to rent a empty gymnasium for a kids birthday party ages 5-7. Can you name me some stuff we could do except play soccer.

Answer
How about the little bowling pins and balls? The plastic ones aren't expensive and easily found in the toy store. There are several bean bag toss games. You could also set up a great obstacle course for them to run. I think that could be pretty fun. Have a small table set up for face painting and/or a crafts station. There are lots of really inexpensive things they can make or paint and have so much fun. You could even set up a cupcake decorating station. Have fun.

Babysitting a 5, 7, 9, and 12 year old?

Q. the youngest is a boy and all the rest are girls. I just don't know what I can do with all of them so they don't feel left out. I can't do their nails cause one's a boy, the oldest doesn't want to play little kid games. Help me?

Answer
Calm down. It will be alright. What I would suggest is bring something for each kid. Maybe bring something the boy would like such as a soldier toy figure. For the 7 and 9 year old I suggest bringing something girly and pink, assuming they are into that stuff. For example, bring a dress up kit and lipstick and play with them with that. The 12 year old is a tough one. I would ask the children's parents to see what kind of stuff the 12 year old would like.

christmas toys for my kids?

Q. I am going to get the toys for my kids. since we are going to a roughttime we are going to get free from toys for tots. Can i go alone there *(they already have my info). or do i need to take my children. they are 12,9.7,11 years old. I don't want them to fell bad if they are getting free staff.

Answer
I don't think your kids need to go with you. They should have the information on all your children and have some things put aside for them already.

I don't see a reason for the kids to have to come. It might be better for them not to because like you said they may feel embarrassed, and it will ruin the surprise.

You shouldn't feel embarrassed lots of people are having a hard time this Christmas. I wish you the best for the new year and happy holidays.

Free christmas toys for my kids who have sum?

Q. I'm a single mother I need help can u help me

Answer
There are a few organizations that give out free toys to need children, or children whose parents can't afford to give them Christmas gifts. Toys for tots gives toys to kids who need them; www.toysfortots.org. You can also go to Salvation Army and ask about their program that is similar to Toys for Tots, or go to some local churches because a lot of them donate toys to kids. You might also want to go to your child's school and ask about it, because a lot of schools have programs where they let kids pick certain toys if their parents can't afford it. If you live near a YMCA, they have a Women and children crisis center that sometimes helps women to give gifts to their children. Those are the few that I could think of. I hope this has helped, and I hope you and your kids turn out to have a good Christmas! God bless. :)

What kind of car should I get?

Q. So, my parents are getting me a car. With that being said, I do work and I will be paying the car payments including for gas and car mechanical failures. I am 16 and this is NOT my first car. Yes, my parents don't mind spending money, etc. on me obviously and I was just wondering from your opinion - what kind of car I should get or what do you think is better.

*NO NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT HOW YOU SAY RICH KID AND PARENTS WHO WILL DO ANYTHING FOR THEIR KID, ETC. THAT'S VERY RUDE!* (Yes, I said it in all caps haha!)

I was looking at these cars:
2012 Chevy Volt
2012 Hyundai Tucson
2012 Hyundai Sonata
2012 Cadillac SRX
2012 BMW X6M
2012 Porsche Cayenne
2012 Porsche Panamera
2011 BMW M3
2012 Mercedes Benz CLS 63 AMG
2012 Lexus IS F

MY OPINION:
I have close enough in money to afford a Porsche Panamera & Porsche Cayenne because I have been modeling and acting and I have been saving up with that money since I was 10 when I started. I still do modeling and acting but, little of it now since booking have been slow so I got myself a job at a local restaurant and at a lawyers office. I am home schooled so I have enough time to work, etc.

HERE'S WHERE YOU COME IN:
For value and performance overall, especially for a car that I would like to keep for years from now, what car should I get?

I KNOW: You are going to say also, what is she doing driving a high performance, luxury or everyday car if she doesn't even know how to drive and she is just 16. In my state, the driving age is 14. I have never been involved in a car accident, never caused one and have never gotten any points taken off my license. I know how distracting it is to have friends in the car as my friend has died from that fatal accident but, I honestly don't drive with friends in the car. I only drive with family members in the car or on my own. No music. Just listening to that good old sound of car horns and the environment. (:

From your point of view, like I said, which is better? Please no negativity. Just answers. I know someone is going to put something negative on this post but, I did ask for an answer. I did not however ask for a mean one.

I hope you reply with what you think! Thanks! (:

*p.s. I know that I will have to go to driving school if I wanted to drive a high performance vehicle to know how to control the car, etc.* #JustSaying. (:
@mechanic_girl_C: Thanks for responding! (: I'll keep the Hyundai's in mind. ^_^
@iwastypingthat: Yes. No music seriously. (: Thanks for responding also! ^_^ I'll keep what you mentioned in mind about resale and safety with those cars.
@Raff: Thanks for responding! (: Ouch! That's off of my list for good. Haha yes, I do actually. ^_^
@apeweek: I've read through the information given on the volt and yes, it's reliable & very safe, etc. but I have come to the conclusion to just leave the volt off of my list. I did go down to test drive the Volt today and it's not really for me. It's safe, has the features but it also balls down to how much room is in the vehicle. It's great for someone who wants something small but I like to have a more space. (:
@GM Customer Svc: Thanks for the information on the SRX. (:

Answer
You should get a Chevy Volt. I'm sure this will make many readers scream, but hear me out. There is independent support for this position.
*
Consumers Reports has the Volt as one of their "recommended" cars. In fact the Volt is the ONLY recommended American car in the small car category. See link:
*
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/types/new-models-by-category.htm
*
The Volt in fact came in first place - beating every other car Consumer Reports tracks - in their Buyer Satisfaction survey. See link:
*
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13746_7-57334967-48/chevy-volt-scores-highest-satisfaction-rating-in-consumer-reports-survey/7
*
It also aced their first year reliability rankings. Note that Consumer Reports did not initially like the Volt - they trashed it in an article after the car first came out. But after testing it for a few months, they radically changed their opinion. This is the key - test drive one and see for yourself.
*
Volt got top 5-star scores in safety testing from both NHTSA and the Insurance Institute - see link (yes, recent "Volt fire" stories are sheer nonsense):

And
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/driveon/post/2011/04/chevy-voly-nissan-leaf-crash-test-iihs-top-safety-pick/1
*
The Volt's little secret is that this is a wickedly fun-to-drive car, great acceleration, full of technological gadgets, and it attracts a lot of attention. Driving past gas stations is fun, too.
*
Plus - it's not even as expensive as most people assume. Depending on your driving pattern - and taking into account that electricity is much cheaper than gasoline - the total cost of ownership could even be cheaper than a comparable car. Below is a spreadsheet where you can input your own driving needs and see what kind of car is cheapest to drive:
*
http://www.squidoo.com/a-free-calculator-for-economy-hybrid-and-electric-cars
*
Yes, I own one. It's the best car I have ever owned. If you go with a Volt, be prepared for arguments with everybody. Do your research so you can answer your critics. This is a great car, the car of the future.

Dog wont stop chewing Kids' toys..?

Q. Our English Mastiff puppy (about 10mths) wont stop chew the kids' toys. She has plenty of her own!! Our other dog, a 2 year old Black Lab, doesnt have this problem. Does anyone have suggestions?! please!
The kids are 5 & 3.. So, its difficult to keep them put away. I will try the substitution! thanks much Mike.

Answer
Make sure that your puppies toys are not similar to the kids (like stuffed animals) and never toys shaped like shoes and slippers. Not sure why its difficult for the kids to keep their toys picked up at age 3, they should be doing it...not you, but thats getting off topic. Every time the puppy grabs a child's toy, firmly say "drop it" and take it away. If you see her going toward your child's toy say "leave it". Giving an appropriate toy at this time will help reinforce what she is allowed to have.

One thing I did when my dog was a puppy was teach her boundaries. She learned she was not allowed in the bathrooms or my daughters room. That is great especially when the kids have friends over that are nervous with dogs. Our dog has a basket for her toys (though she never learned to pick up, but not for lack of tying on my part) that she goes to for a toy or bone. She will nose through till she finds the one she wants.

toys for the kids?

Q. what's the hottest toys for infants, toddler boys and an 8 yr old girl??? What's the best that they never seem to get sick off???
my son is only 7 months but when he turns 1, whats the best toys??? I have the fisher price drop and roar dinosaur. i saw it and just had to get it

Answer
Kids like big toys it seems. Yes, big toys are more expensive but they don't seem to get thrown into the toy box after 20 minutes. One year olds like ride on toys and things like that. Toddler boys like the same thing. They also like places to hide such as forts and tents. As for an 8 year old girl--they're all different. Some like dress up and some like playing house and cooking with pretend food and some like make-up and dressing up Barbies.

Stay at home moms How do you manage your house and play with your kids?

mommy+2

I have a three month old and a two year old and wanting to know how you manage your time with chores, cooking and finding time for your children. I want my house to stay presentable to guest, but I dont know how to manage my time. Help Please

Answer
My kids are pretty much the same age as your - I have found that the best way to keep up is to just stay on top of things. Here's an example of my typical day:

5:30 (ish) - Wake up, shower, get dressed, start some laundry, have breakfast or a cup of tea while reading the newspaper or a book.

7:30 (ish) - Kids wake up, I get them up, bathed, dressed, make and feed them breakfast.

After breakfast time we usually go outside and play if the weather is nice (not right now - there's a ton of snow on the ground), or we play indoors by learning or reading or just being silly. I've been working with my two year old on her letters, colors, shapes, animals, animal sounds, and different objects (tree, grass, flower, sky, ect...).

During the morning time I also do some housework like finishing up laundry and cleaning if my daughter is pretty absorbed in playing something (the baby doesn't do much so she just hangs out on the play mat or in her playpen looking at colorful toys and batting at toys).

I then play with the kids a little more or we go for a walk.

I either make lunch for the kids or we pack a lunch and go meet my husband at work for lunch and eat with him.

After lunch, we run errands if needed, buy groceries, go to the park, to the library, for a walk , or to playgroup or other community activities for kids, or we just stay home and play outside or inside or read some more, do some learning activities, ect.

During the afternoon I usually finish up housework. My 2 year old daughter then goes down for her nap at 2 or 3:00, depending on her mood that day, and during this time I have a few hours to myself. During this time I finish up any remaining housework, do yardwork, spend time doing some of my hobbies (I love to scrapbook and crochet), read a book, hang out outside for awhile, and just have some ME time.

The girls wake up from their naps at around 5:00 p.m. I get them up and started on an activity of some sort while I make dinner, or sometimes I let my 2 year old "help" me make dinner...lol.
When my husband gets home at 6:30, supper is on the table, we have a nice dinner together as a family and then I clean up the supper mess, clean the kitchen, do the dishes and get all that stuff cleaned up.

We then have about 2 or 3 hours to spend together as a family and this is mostly spent playing, but occasionally we have a movie night where we put in a kid - friendly movie and make some popcorn (a fun treat at our house for our 2 year old daughter), and just have fun. I also straighten up the house a little at this time if needed.
At 8:30, it's bath time and bedtime story time and then bedtime for our girls, and then my husband and I have an hour or two to spend together just the two of us before we go to bed for the night.

It's all about just staying on top of things and not letting stuff pile up. Do a little here and there - let your two year old "help" you and yes play with them, but also let them play on their own a little bit so that you can get your work done too. If you straighten up the house at night after the kids are in bed, then it will be clean in the morning and then just keep on top of it during the day - throw in a load of laundry here and there, pick up the house as it becomes messy, do the dishes when your kids are involved in something, do the deep cleaning during nap time. You'll find that it's easy if you just keep on top of things! Give it a try - it sounds impossible - but it's not. It took me awhile to figure it out too - but don't worry, you'll find a groove that works for you - just stick with it!

What can I do about my bossy (almost) 7 year old?

Q. Before I go any further, I know I'm going to get a lot of crap for asking this. "Why did you have kids in the first place?" and blah blah blah. I'm not asking for the rude responses. I would like some suggestions on how to curb this behavior.

I know being bossy is 'normal' but I'm really starting to get sick of hearing my daughter bossing her younger brother around. He's only 3. She's constantly yelling at him "DON'T PLAY WITH MY TOYS!" "DON'T GO IN MY ROOM" "DON'T GO IN THE KITCHEN" and other nonsense. I keep telling her that if she doesn't want him to play with her toys, then she needs to put them away. If she doesn't want him in her room, then she needs to close her door. So on, and so forth. I'm constantly telling her that she isn't his mother, so she doesn't need to hound him like that. On top of that, she's constantly tattle-tailing on him. As soon as he drops his pants to use the toilet, she's yelling "MOM, HE'S PULLING HIS PANTS DOWN!" or if I give him permission to go in the fridge to get a Go-Gurt or a Capri Sun, she's running to me to tell me what he's doing.

I do not leave my kids in one room while I am in another, unless I am in the bathroom. They are always where I can see them, so I know exactly what my son is doing. My daughter knows this. I have even caught her whispering in his ear that if he goes next to the TV, then the boogeyman will jump out and bite his hands off, just so he doesn't try to turn the TV off on her. I am seriously at my wits end over this.

Any suggestions on how I can curb this behavior? Time-outs don't work for her. She's in time-out still snitching and bossing him around- "GET me some tissues. GET me a drink." etc. Help please!!!
Massy- why would I beat my son? He's not the one doing anything wrong in 90% of the time. Besides, beating doesn't solve anything. I am not going to physically strike any of my kids for this.
Abel- I do believe in spankings, but not over something like this. It's not going to teach her anything. In our household, we reserve spankings for more serious things, and they are few and far between. And if I spank over this, she's going to easily be spanked 20 times or more.

Cloud Rose- He knows that there is no boogeyman. The funny thing is, he only shuts off the TV when she's bossing him around excessively. He tries to stand up for himself by saying "You are not my mother!". I have taken things away from her- her dolls, access to the Wii, no disneychannel.com, etc. She's just so stubborn and strong-willed. I just don't know how to deal with this logically anymore.
Damonem- would you mind emailing me or YIMing me? You bring up a lot of good points, but I would like to go into further discussion, if you will, over some things. You seem to have a lot of knowledge about this and I would like some more insight. Thank you :)

Answer
(Reads over your inquiry and hangs head) one thing that you need to keep in mind is that the purpose of time-out is to forestall the advent of an explosive situation where a kid is about to lose control; what you are facing with your daughter is not that scenario, compadre. What I think is the greatest danger here is that your frustration building beyond your ability to contain it and doing something terrible that is almost irreversible for no good reason without actually solving the problem.

Considering the frequency of this kind of behavior, surely by now you have picked up on a pattern that offers insight as to whether or not this is going to occur. If I were the family government, I would take the kid aside for some »female bonding« that consists of some time-consuming chore around the house or perhaps assisting you in the kitchen with making cookies or something. This is excellent for when this kid is watching TV when she bosses around her kid brother.

Another countermeasure I would consider if I were you is to give your daughter a taste of her own medicine. Get up from the computer and start barking all kinds of orders at your daughter the same way that she has done to your son; try for at least ten different orders within 60 seconds' time. Keep that up for about ten minutes; a few sessions of cadet-and-drill sergeant should give your daughter pause whenever she feels the need to boss around her kid brother.

Yet another countermeasure to attempt is to spend one-on-one time with the 3 y/o using the 7 y/o's toys; if the 7 y/o gets too obstreperous over the whole thing, the 3 y/o has some hand-me-down toys courtesy of his big sister (^_^).

Before I began typing my reply, there was a response that recommended taking your bare-bottomed daughter over your lap and spanking her. I am not so sure about that considering that you are rather frustrated at your daughter who seems to have taken your inaction to mean that her conduct is okay. Spanking only makes sense if the parent is willing to demonstrate a profound change in family government related to something dangerous a kid is doing to himself or another kid in terms of physical danger or if there is a harsh criminal punishment attached to her misconduct; as annoying as your daughter's drill-sergeant routine on her kid brother is, I do not really think that it meets the aforementioned requirements.

If your daughter challenges you on the hand-me-down toys response and it looks like she is going to do more than merely bark orders at her brother, time-out or even spanking would make sense at that moment. Remember, both of those tactics are to FORESTALL an escalating situation rather than extinguishing it after the fact.

One final thought -- it seems like your daughter wishes to have something to control in her life; seriously consider analyzing your household and daily life for the »small stuff« that are comical at worst if mismanaged by your daughter (along with her kid brother when he gets into that neighborhood). Exempli gratia, when the time comes around for a proactive injection in the doctor's office, allow your daughter to decide where she is to be given the needle and how she wants to deal with the pain. If there is to be an outing, set the stage the night before for your daughter to decide what she wants to wear (within reason, of course!!!) so that the kid feels that the outing is being done with her rather than unto her. Between the absolute »no-no's« and »have to's« of life is a gray area where a kid can exercise some discretion with the right kind of family government; capitalize upon it!!!

Also, forego the TV as the main means of entertainment and converge on board games and card games where everybody can take part. Your child relatives might have to bust a move at the poker or blackjack table someday; teach them the mechanics of those games so that they win the whole pot . . . just kidding!!! Still, negotiating for a fair day's pay or for vacation time is a lot like playing poker or blackjack in that there are crucial mechanics that have to be dexterously exploited if there is to be a euphoric epilogue. What are you waiting for!?! Get going, compadre; that's an order!!!

Kids and toys?

Q. I have one daughter age of 7 and one step-son he is 10 and they both are always fighting over toys. how can I teach them to share?

Answer
1.Tell them about the poor kids who wish they had these toys!
2.Let them play with the toys at different times!
3.Take their toys away until they learn to share!
4.Show them how it feels when someone refuses to share with them
Example:Go buy something like a toy that both of them wants and say it yours and when they ask to play with it you say so you want me to share?( Then they are suppose to say yes)(they may not but if they do)!You say no im not sharing my toy! Then if they ask why then say becasue you guys dont know how to share! Then ask them how they felt when you said that you are not sharing your toy! Then say well thats how each of yall feel when yall dont share you make a person sad because ou wont share! If this doesnt work sorry with my kids it did!

Learning toys for kids, any suggestions?

Q. I'm glad that some companies think ahead and design toys that have some practical use but finding them is tough. Sure they say they have something that is practical but then you get it and it's all gimmick. I can't stomach a toy that's useless as it's hard earned money I'm spending. Anyone with any suggestions for where I can get learning toys for kids?

Answer
Teacher stores have lots of learning toys for kids Barnes and Noble has a whole section of learning toys hope I helped :-)

R&Sers would you get your kids a gift card or...?

Annalissa

My 12 year old wants a gift card for Christmas clothes (she want to make her own choices in clothes...thatâs fine) Iâm only putting $100 on this card, but sheâs unsure where she wants the card from, Kohls, Jc Penny, or even Wal-Mart.

Well I told her I could possibly buy two cards with $50 on each, but then I was in Wal-Mart picking out some odds and ends when I came across the Wal-Mart visa debit card. I have a visa debit myself and love it, but Iâm not too sure if that is over the top for a 12 year old. This way sheâll be able to grab some clothes at different stores and not have to worry about being confined to one store.

Should I get one and put in in my name so I can still approve of items? (sheâs not getting anything sluttty , not under my watch) or should I put it in her name? Is that even allowed with visa debit cards? Will it have to be put in my name anyway?
That's what I mean , a pre-paid card
chieko,

You have no idea what you're talking about, we live on a once source income, my husband and he only makes $14 an hour. We are not rich, we can not afford to through money around, we had to put the billd off just for christmas this year, with hopes to catch up in the next few months.
My mother bought my daughter clothes with ducks and bears on them and she was humiliated at school. She wants to pick out her own clothes and at age 12, I think she is old enough to pick out a shirt she actually likes.

But I'd love to see all this money you claim I have, maybe you can find it and tell me where it is.
Sorry typed too fast..we live on One income and we had to put the bills off, just so my kids can have a good christmas.
chieko,
Oh excuse me for wanting my kids to go to school with decent clothes, perhaps youâll be happier if I went to the salvation army to buy my kids clothes..or maybe just to make you happy I should send them with their old pants with wholes, stained clothes. Thatâll boost my kids spirit right? Oh and a pre-paid card is not consumer debt, weâll be able to pay our bills in the next few months, with no problems, itâs all calculated out. I feel sorry for your kids if you have any, it seems you could care less what they wear. Fashion is one thing but appropriate clothing for school is different. Oh and Iâm not angry with you, just shocked that you donât give a crud about kids, or their clothes. I feel very sorry for your children to have such a heartless mother.
See there, no kids..you couldn't possibly understand what parents go through. I also go to the salvation army for myself, why?..because I was raised poor too, but my children come first, unlike you who seems to only care for herself.

I'm blocking you now because you are becoming a pain in the butt and if you have no kids and are not a parent, this question was not for you anyway.

I was addressing the Parents and since you are not one the you have no reason to be here.
Thanks Kerri

Answer
Anna
The gift card is a great idea for choosy kids, I noticed you were only buying clothes which is wonderful that you let your kids pick out clothes that suites them, good clothes could really boost self confidence and if the bears and ducks scarred her then itâs best that you go with her while sheâs spending, which Iâm sure you will because sheâs only 12.

I also noticed a couple of negative people on here, but you know what Anna? Donât worry about them, I also bought my kids clothes that they hated, over and over and my kids did everything they could to avoid wearing them. Get the card, let them pick out the clothes they like and you donât have to worry about taking clothes back or having your kids upset that you bought clothes they donât like.

Iâve been through this, I have a couple of kids myself, one who's 12 as well and I know kids refuse to wear things they donât like.

Besides, have you ever seen the âThereâs no way in h*ll, Iâm going to wear thisâ face as your kid opened her present?
Have you seen the stunned, big eyed, no breathing face with the dull sounding, âuhhâ¦thanks momâ as your kid tosses the box aside?

Iâve seen both of those, Iâve also seen clothes hidden, clothes âlost at schoolâ and clothes simply thrown away. Iâd rather get the card for clothes, that way you know you didnât waste your money.

Besides $100 will not go a long way anyway, I spent $75 at kohls and only got four shirts, defiantly not a whole wardrobe. Buy every thing else, toys and such but defiantly let your kids pick out their own clothes..

Gift cards are not the lazy way out, sometimes itâs the only way kids will get the clothes they really will wear, instead of opening the package and tossing it aside. As a mother, I understand your dilemma. Iâd go with a pre-paid visa or master card, you keep it and only break it out when you both agree on something acceptable.

God Bless

My budget is $50-ish each... What are some good Christmas gifts for kids 18 and under in foster care?

Jim I

Last year, my office worked with a foster care program in our community. We bought gifts for the kids and the families.

The family gifts included:
* a gift certificate to Wal-Mart
* a gift certificate to Blockbuster
* A box of popcorn
* Small boxes of candy
* McDonalds gift certificates
* A board game
* A disposable camera

For the kids, we bought different gifts based on ages:
* Portable CD Player
* Barbies
* Stuffed animals
* Disney toys
* Art supplies

Well, it's that time of year again, and I need some suggestions. We spend approximately $50 per kid/family, and there will be some attendees from last year. Santa doesn't want to bring the same gifts again, so he's trying to come up with some new ideas.

I'd love to hear of good suggestions for these kids... this is largely what they get for Christmas. They are in attendance for the event, but Santa does hand out the presents.

Thanks, and Merry Christmas!!!
Tangible gifts for the kids... the gift certificates are for the family's to buy clothes or other necessities.

We aren't giving a kid a gift certificate.
No clothes... too hard to shop for all the sizes.

I hope everyone will mark this as an interesting question. I have already received emails about it! :)

Answer
18 and under? That is a large catagory, but the $50 budget helps with that. Teens 13-18 years of age might like something more having to do so with electronics than the rest.

The only thing I can think of that is about that price range that I wanted that age period was an MP3, Nintendo 64 (old gaming system, but lots of fun), Atari, and Money. If the kids have a computer, then maybe a nice MP3 would work! :) There are tons of MP3s at walmart that are in the $25-$40 range and work about just as nice as an iPod. Nintendo 64s are always fun no matter how old they may be (you can use this for children too) The normal systems are anywhere from $20-$40 on ebay and in wonderful condition, and the games are available at almost any pawn shop, and some video stores rent/sell them. Ataris are hard to find now so some may be overpriced, but you could find a good Atari Flashback for about $25-$40 on ebay, the Flashbacks are better because they have all the games already built in. If all else fails, there are always cheap electronics like digital cameras, cds, and tvs at Wal-Mart, and gift cards! :)

Younger kids 9-12 might like a variaty of things like maybe some of them want to be grown up already and have an MP3 of their own? That's where the $25-$30 MP3s at walmart come in handy. You can also buy them game systems that are under your $50 budget. A few kids here might want a DS, but who can aford that on a tight budget!? Insteed older versions of gameboys that are priced down now might be just the thing they would like. Legos are always wonderful to have, the smaller ones that is. They're fun to play with and lots of kids love them. The art supplies is always a good idea, kids like to be creative, so why not let them be for a small price. :)

Now, the younger ones 5-8 will need something that intrest them and can't hurt them, because some at this age still don't understand 'don't put that in your mouth'. Also, at this age they want to act all grown up so cuter cheaper version of digital camera would work. Those fake laptops that are for educational or other kinds of gaming are very nice for kids this age. Barbies and Littlest Pet Shops are great ideas for girls. Boys might rather have the MatchBox toys and Action figures. You can always get them play food and a toy cash register and/or cart too!

Ages 2-4 might rather have coloring books, crayons and fisher price toys. Nothing really hard to think about there, and they'll always love stuffed animals! You can get the even littler ones stuffed animals or toys that make noise.

For families Wal-mart gift cards and digital cameras would be nice. I hope these give you some good ideas for presents, and Merry Christmas to you too! ^-^

Cheap Xmas present ideas?

priestesso

Christmas is coming up & it's going to be very tight...we are moving back to the city our family live in at the end of November.

People to get presents for include my grandmother (Who's birthday falls on the same date), my parents (who are helping us move), my partner's parents, our son, sister, brothers(27 & 16), two nephews(12,13) a niece, great aunt, aunt and my partner's grandmother. Those are only what we consider "close" family, because our family is very large!!

Answer
Umm I wouldn't buy for your 27 year old brother he's too old! if hes got kids your buying for them anyway. Grandmothers I tend to get a basket and put some bath stuff in (lots of shops do buy one get one free or 3 for 2). My parents and my husbands parents all get a bar or box of their favourite chocolates aswell as a top for both fathers, a picture frame with 9 spaces for pics which I put photos of the grandchildren in for each mum. Nephews at 12 & 13 give them money, they will appreciate it alot more than a gift! Neice dependant on age make up is good (again look for 3 for 2 or buy on eget one free and do a basket or box or get a little bag and fill that) if shes younger check out woolworths, and tesco who are both doing 1/2 price toys at the moment. Great aunt make shortbread, buy a nice box line it with grease proof paper and put the shortbread in. You could also put in homemade fudge or mints or if she likes jams and marmalades and your a good baker you could make her some of those.

What can I get my family for Xmas?

Q. Dad: Likes golf, can't golf due to medical conditions, "doesn't watch TV or movies anymore" when I recommended "Breaking Bad" though he mentioned John Wayne DVD set someone gave him for his birthday.

Mom: reads trashy generic novels she buys randomly at book store, tries to dress nicely

Wife: Doesn't do much, just wants to go home, but we just moved there and then back last summer because it was so awful, at least for me and our son. She has iPod, iPod Touch, Kindle Fire, and laptop

Under 10 Son: Only likes video games which we limit greatly and he's limited by the 2006 laptop he uses. No consoles or handhelds or phones!
A "hamper", where you put dirty laundry?

Answer
How about any of these to think about for any of your family members. You don't have to any get of them as a gift IF you don't want to, but it might give you ideas or something comes to mind.

Have you ever had to remove a favorite (toddler) toy?

Q. Last summer I got my 2 year old daughter a train set/table which has been a favorite toy ever since.

However, we are in a small apartment and now that we have twins on the way, we need to make room for some of the baby gear - and eliminating the big train table seems like the most logical way to make more space.

I offered the table to my friend (our daughter's are best friends)... but I am dreading having to take it out of here.

I'm looking for a small 'replacement' train set, but....

Any other thoughts on how to make it not-too-traumatic?
Also, any recommendations for a quality (but not too expensive) small train set?
RainWriter - You make a good point. (Cr@p!) I was thinking if I gave it to her friend at least she could still play with it a couple times a week.... but I don't know if she will see it that way. :(

I will definitely wait a good while before putting baby stuff out so that it won't seem like - 'out with your stuff & in with baby stuff.'

There really is no way for us to store this, but I fully intend to get another one for her when we get into a bigger place - probably next year.

Answer
Do you know how your daughter will react when she sees one of her favorite toys become her friend's? I don't know your daughter, but I know that my son would be really upset that he can't have his favorite toy any more but Hannah gets it instead; he'd be a bit jealous and it just wouldn't go over well.

I'd suggest looking at options for storing it until later (and pull it back out after some of the baby gear isn't needed any more), or creative ways to keep it out. If you live close to any favorite relatives, maybe they would have room to set it up at their house for a while. Maybe you can put her dresser away and put the train table there instead, then put her clothes into shallow bins that fit under the table. You could take the legs off (if the table works that way) and store it under her bed when it's not in use; you can slide it out to play and then slide it back under when she's done (like a trundle bed). If it's a favorite toy, it may be worth finding a way to keep.

Favorite baby and toddler toys?

Q. What are your favorites and/or your little ones favorites?
What ones do you hate?

You can be as vague (ex. dolls, or cars) or as specific (ex. Fisher-Price blah blah blah here's a link to the product: www.whatever....) as you'd like.

Answer
I think we have every little people accessory ever made. I absolutely love them! Its the first thing I saw Caleb really starting to use his imagination with... making noises and role playing with the people in different cars/houses. So cute.

Least favorite... would have to be puzzles, of any kind. I think they're great for kids, but in our case they just end up covering the whole kitchen floor 10x a day and I end up having to put them back together constantly. I especially hate the one that has animal sounds, because if a piece is ever missing I keep hearing moo's & meow's randomly throughout the night. I can't wait til the batteries die out on that thing...

Which kids camera should I get?

Katie 76

We're going on a cruise in the Bahamas soon and both kids are having birthdays right before. They've been asking for cameras and I want to get each one to take pics. They'll be 8 & 10 but never have had cameras before so I don't want to spend over a $100 on a nicer camera. Which have you had better luck with the Fisher Price or Vtech? Will these work well enough for my 10 yr old?

Answer
You can get a good deal on a lower end digital camera, for example:
http://www.officemax.com/catalog/sku.jsp?skuId=21714192&cm_ven=Performics&cm_cat=www.deals2buy.com&cm_pla=Rubberband%20Logo%20120x60&cm_ite=Rubberband%20Logo%20120x60&affcode=performics&siteID=k26451&mid=&cm_ven=Performics&cm_cat=Skimbit&cm_pla=Everex%20StepNote%20ST5340T%2012.1%20Ultra%20Portable%20Notebook%20PC%22&cm_ite=Everex%20StepNote%20ST5340T%2012.1%20Ultra%20Portable%20Notebook%20PC%22&affcode=performics&siteID=k186085&mid=skim115X178
for about the same price, this would still be much better than the 'toy' cameras.

@mechanic_girl_C: Thanks for responding! (: I'll keep the Hyundai's in mind. ^_^

*
http://green.autoblog.com/2011/06/03/chevy-volt-earns-five-star-nhtsa-crash-rating-w-videos/
And
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/driveon/post/2011/04/chevy-voly-nissan-leaf-crash-test-iihs-top-safety-pick/1
This is a great car, the car of the future.

no kids at baby shower?

heather c

My best friend is throwing my baby shower and she lives with her parents (she's 20) but they live in a super nice big house on the beach. The only thing is this is my 2nd baby shower and most of my friends have kids around the age of 2. I would feel terrible having all these kids running around getting into thing at her house (they don't have any kids). So when I invite the people to come should I put not to bring the kids with? I'm not sure what to do.
My first child was a girl in 08' , and now we are having a boy. Otherwise we wouldn't have another shower :)
* I didn't ask for a nother shower. My bff is offering.

Answer
Some people may not be able to come unless they bring the kids. Maybe you can see if you can help get a bedroom set up as a play area. Just help your friend set aside anything fragile and bring in some toys for the kids to play with. Make sure its near the main baby shower area so you all can still keep an eye on the kids. Another option is if a few husbands can take the kids to a zoo for a few hours. Its not uncommon to have kids at a baby shower if it comes down to it. And talk to your friends parents and get there permission too to make sure its ok to rsvp a bedroom for the kids to play in.

It's not selfish to have a 2nd shower for a different sex baby. Don't let people bring you down like that. It's not all about the gifts. Its to have joy over a new life!

Kids these days????????

Q. I was a 00s kid. And I played tech decks, had pogs, collected Pokemon cards, sega dreamcast,GameCube,ps1. But my brothers are 2010 kids, they are young and have ipod touches,phones,ps3,Xbox 360s,YouTube accts, twitters, turtle beach mics, all call of duties. What happened to children???

Answer
When *I* was a kid:
Kids played outdoors the majority of the day.
There was 1 channel (maybe 2 if you were lucky and lived in the right area) dedicated to children. And it was the first channel dedicated to children.
There were only a few types of video game consoles, and very few families had them. You had to find the right families if you wanted to play any games without going to arcades. There were 60 houses in my neighborhood, and only 4 of them had a video game console.
If you wanted money, you found a way to earn it. Whether it was mowing lawns, washing cars, or selling lemonade. And, you were lucky if you got more than 50 cents a job. Once you got to be mature enough, you might get a job as a babysitter at a whopping 2-5 bucks an hour, depending on your experience level.
Making your own toys was the way to go. Whether it was making tables for your dolls out of strawberry baskets or musical instruments out of trash.

As a teen, I finally got to use the internet, which was new and dial-up. And we only used it when needed. And, you got kicked off the internet if someone was placing a call.
When I was an older teen, the first "color" cellphone came out. It had a green back light instead of a white one. That year I got my first phone but ONLY because I had events that went on in different counties, so my parents needed a way to contact me.
Text messages were charged by the letter and phones didnt have cameras. And, most people didn't have cellphones, instead they had beepers and needed to use payphones if they wanted to respond to a message sent to their beeper while they were out of the house.
