At what age did your parents start to give away some of your baby things?

Guppy

My mom wants to give away some of my infant - toddler toys and possibly some clothing items, to some little kids.
WHY? They're mine. I don't play with them but they're still mine. I want to keep them all. She lets my adult uncle keep all his toys in our house though she wants to give away his. I want those toys too.

Answer
My parents didn't keep any of our toys or clothes--the clothes were handed down to the next one in line. I kept most of my children's toys and some of their clothing also.

What kind of toys do you prefer for your toddler, wooden toys or plastic toys?

harold

I'm curious to the type of toy material that parents prefer to buy for their toddlers?

Answer
Hi Harold,

I tend to have a strong liking for wood toys that are of excellent quality, but find that wooden toys are generally limited to blocks, puzzles and some very expensive hand made train sets. Some of the best wooden blocks on the market are Melissa & Doug's Standard Unit Blocks:

http://www.kids-toys-parents-love.com/standard_unit_blocks.html

They have other great wooden puzzle sets, and ImagiPlay makes an earth friendly dinosaur puzzle with non toxic paint: http://www.kids-toys-parents-love.com/Dinosaur_puzzles.html

Most of the toys we get for our kids are plastic, primarily because of selection and availability. They definitely are easier to disinfect and last just as long as the wood toys.

Most of the concerns over quality come from the massive 2007 recall from plastic toys manufactured in China containing lead and cadmium metals!! Besides keeping manufacturing jobs closer to home, companies like Little Tikes, Step 2 and Kid K'Nex keep a tight control over quality and materials. For toddlers, Little Tikes and Step 2 offer a wide variety of American made toys manufactured in Ohio, while Kid K'Nex is a great company for older kids who love creative building.

http://www.kids-toys-parents-love.com/Step_2_Toys.html
http://www.kids-toys-parents-love.com/Kid_KNex.html

So in answering your questions, I prefer wooden toys, but availability and selection keeps our toy collection at 90% plastic and 10% wood.

Hopes this helps, and have fun playing with wood or plastic toys with your toddler!!

Im just curious about when you kids learned to pick up after themselves. Ive tried teaching my 14 month old to put her toys away, but she's not quite getting it. If I put something in the box she just runs over and pulls it out again.
When do you think she'll grasp the concept of tidying up?
Did you do anything different to get your child interested..like a game or a song or something?

Thanks!

Answer
Getting my 5 year old to clean up after herself is like pulling teeth. But my 20 month old will put stuff away when i ask her. i think it has a lot to do with personalities. But a great song is the Clean up song.
Clean up, Clean up
Everybody everywhere
Clean up Clean up
Everybody do your share
started singing that with my first when she was 18 months, and she still sings it sometimes. now my second is started to hum a little with it.

Sugar glider or asus transformer prime? "Sugar gliders are legal here"?

As the question stated above, which should I get, me and my family will be upgrading to the iPhone 5 late October-November. Right now I have an iPod touch, "Flashback", my dad told me he would get me a bike, roughly worth 300, I hesitated and asked him if I could get sugar gliders instead, after a while, he ok'd it, (a pair of 2 for 300), i was also thinking about getting the tablet for school purposes with the laptop dock I could buy later. So in your opinion, which do you think I should get. If you decide to help, please do not leave rude comments, I got the iPod mid November 2011, our phones are due upgrade, but we're waiting for next gen iPhone, and my dad was planning on getting the gift "sugar gliders or tablet for the 2 birthdays, and 2 christmas' I told him I would just rather save up for something later on in life. My birthday is in a week, so can you please help me? Sorry this is confusing, I mentioned iPhone and iPod background so you wouldn't think I'm a spoiled brat, the real question was ""(Sugar glider or asus transformer prime tablet)"" BTW, both are priced $300, thank you

Answer
Get the tablet for school. You have the right idea about getting two sugar gliders since they can't be alone, but I think you're forgetting that it usually runs about 150-300 for each glider (unless there is a special deal for buying pairs), then it'll be a couple of hundred dollars more for the necessary supplies to keep them healthy and happy. You need the appropriate housing material: a tall or wide cage good enough to house them will run you about $100 (most likely more) so that'll be $400 now, a glider safe wheel that's not too small for them will be about $20-50, a cage set that has pouches made of FLEECE can cost, depending on the set, what it comes with, the patterns, where you buy them, somewhere from $15-50 bucks, water bottle and food dishes another $10-20 bucks. They need to be on special mixed diets. There's no such thing as a healthy staple pellet diet for gliders. Anyone who tries to sell you gliders with pellet food, heat rocks, a guide, a small cage, etc. is wrong. Most of their diets can be purchased at your supermarket and/or online. To start out, you'll probably spend about $50 for all the ingredients combined, but after it should last you a few months if you buy frozen fruits and veggies rather than fresh. They need toys to keep them entertained so this could run you at the cheapest about another $20 bucks. And then treats anywhere from $10-20 bucks. I'd check out the HPW and BML diets for an idea on what a healthy staple diet is for gliders. If you don't meet their dietary needs, you can end up staining their coat, giving them a calcium deficiency which can paralyze their hind legs forever, shorten their life span and/or kill them.

A few other things about gliders: it's necessary to use fleece for pouches and bedding material. This is so that they don't get stuck on string and chew their body parts off to get free or lose circulation and need to have a leg or a tail (whatever is stuck in the string) amputated. A lone glider can risk becoming depressed, lonely, stressed out and will eventually self-mutilate and/or die. They have no bowel control so they cannot control when or where they pee and poop so there can't be potty trained. You'll be picking up after them very often. They're messy eaters so they fling and throw their food everywhere, even through the bars of their cage. And they can throw far. You'll find food in ridiculous places. Their nails need to be trimmed, depending on the glider, every 2 weeks to once a month, because they get sharp and long and it's easier for them to get stuck on things. It's very hard to trim some gliders nails because they don't like it. They'll make a fuss and if you mess up you can end up trimming too far back and hurt them. They're nocturnal so they must sleep about 20hours during the day. Too much light hurts their eyes. I have four gliders and they usually don't wake up until 1am and they are up until 7am, running around their cage, banging things and barking. If you're a light sleeper, they will probably keep you up most of the night.

Also, be sure to check that they are legal where you live as some places do not allow people to have gliders and others require that you at least have a permit. Make sure to do your research as well. They are cute animals but they are labeled exotic pets for a reason. They're very expensive and high maintenance. No exotic animal is easy to care for. They each have very strict requirements when it comes to taking care of them. It's quite like having a child you have to specially prepare meals for and clean up after all the time, that never grows up! Much harder to care for than cats and dogs. So be careful with your decision! I know many teens and kids who bought them and realized it's too much of a responsibility for them to handle and eventually the gliders feel more like a chore to them and enjoy them less. If you're patient and willing to research and provide for the gliders, in the end they are rewarding pets.

Does Babies R Us Tell You That They'll Call Back After An Interview Or Do They Hire You On The Spot?

ILoveRavio

Okay...so I had a group interview at Babies R Us. I came in an hour and a half early. After the group interview, two candidates were sent home and four of us remained. I was amongst the four who had the 1:1 interview with the manager. This was part two of the interview (made it to the big leagues). They told me that they may call me after two days (48 hours) after the date of the interview or I could call back to check the status of my application. Does this mean that I am hired? Would they have hired me on the spot if they were interested or is this how the hiring process is? Anyone with any prior experiences?

Answer
Below are a few interview experiences shared by applicatants who applied at Babies R US. Good Luck !!!

Sales Associate Babies ''R'' - InterviewbSan Francisco, CA (Jul 2012 took 3 days)
Before I start, I just want to add that this is a newly built location. It's still in the process of being built so my interview may be different from many others. I applied online then a day after I received an email stating that they had no positions available for me. 2 days after that email, I received a phone call for an interview. Like many others on here, I researched this site.
When I got there, I was expecting a group interview but instead I got a 1:1 interview with the manager. He asked 3 questions, none of them being difficult what so ever. First question was to introduce myself. Next question, he as what I did in my previous job. Third, he asked my availability. Afterwards, he did all the talking. He explained to me about their goals as a company. He talked about the sales associates job, etc.
3 days later, I got a call and I was hired.

What did you do in your previous job?

Cashier at Babies ''R'' Us-Interviewed in Fresno, CA (Dec 2011 - took 1 week)
I interview for Babies R Us in December 2011. I was contacted by HR to come in for an interview. Overall I had two interviews. The first interviewer was a shift manager and only took less than 10 minutes. He asked basic questions, such as what I was currently doing (school) and my future plans for after that. He asked about my prior work experience as a cashier, and then asked about my availability. 5 days later I got a call to come in for a second interview with the store manager. He asked the same questions, along with a couple scenario ones. I was offered the job on the spot.
Interview Questions
If a customer came up to you and asked for your help, but at the same time you got a call to come to the register because it was busy, and you saw a kid spill something on the floor, what order would you put these in as most important?
Describe a time when you did something that ended out not working your way.?

Cashier and Sales Associate at Babies ''R'' Us-Austin, TX (Oct 2011 - took 3 days)
I applied, they called me back for a group interview. It was at 7am before the store opened and only 3 of the 5 scheduled actually showed up.
We first told our names and favorite cartoon character.
Then we were asked to make a toy out of mega blocks as a team and then market it back to the panel of managers. Halfway through, they "recalled" all the yellow blocks and we had to rebuild without them. The trick on this one is they dump out a certain number of blocks for you to work with, but never say you can't go back to the bin they came from and grab more.
Then we did and individual interview with the panel where they asked what game system I would recommend for a 4 year old boy. I answer 3DS which was new at the time and they LOVED my answer because it's portable, has lots of games and makes them lots of money when they sell it.
They called me back a couple days later and I was hired.
Interview Questions
Your name and favorite cartoon character?.
They dump out a pile of mega blocks and tell you, as a team, to build a toy and then come up with how it's powered, what it does, the age range and the price for it. The time limit is 5 minutes.Halfway through, they come and "recall" one color of block and you're forced to start over.
A mother comes in looking for an electronic game system as a christmas gift for her son, he is 4. What would you recommend?

Online! I have a bunch on nieces and nephews plus my own toddler. There is nothing worse than a crowed toy department. I'm beating them all by purchasing all those toys online. Amazon actually gives you free shipping and handling if you spend enough. It's certainly something to consider.

If so, how was the experience from your, the travelling parent's, point of view? Tips for do's and don'ts. Stories good or not so would be welcomed.

I am hoping to make the best of a 12 hour plus flight for baby, me, and everyone else on board.

Answer
Yes to taking my children on long haul flights, from newborns to teenagers.
Dress the baby in PJ's and have a clean outfit to change into just before you land...make them feel as comfortable as possible, pack a bag of a few (one or two) soft toys and a blanket for them. for coping with pressure of their ears let them suck on a dummy (depending on age) while the plane lands and takes off or let them sip water from a bottle the sucking action will help. Have plenty of wipes and let them have small frequent snacks throughout the flight and when they sleep go to sleep as well.

What is the longest distance you would travel by car with a 19 month old?

Mrs. Doe

We are not huge travelers. We drive to my dad's once or twice every few months and its a 3 hour drive one way, but we stay the night, so its broken up, time wise. My husband wants to go somewhere on vacation and he asked me how long our son could ride in the car without getting too fussy, and honestly I don't know, because 3 hours has been the max.
How far have you driven with your toddler, and how well did they do?

Answer
I am keeping an eye on this question. Our son will be 19 months this month, and we are planning a trip over Memorial day. 6-7 hours in the car. He has done it before, but he was only 9 months when we took the last trip.

i am planning on books, toys, children's cds, and snacks to keep him occupied. I am also hoping to travel when he usually takes his nap!

Edit: I looked on Amazon.com and saw this travel tray you can put on your child's lap that attaches around the carseat. I am thinking of buying one so I can put my son's snacks on it and then he can play with toys and books without them falling. it is only $20, and I think it might be worth it.

best toys for kids 3-5 image

I have 4 kids ages 9,3,5,6. It seems I have to chase them screaming and yelling all day just so things don't get broke or kids getting hurt. They don't listen to anything they are literally climbing walls and hurting each other they wont even play with their toys much they just grab things they know they can't have and brake them

Answer
1ST OF ALL YOU ARE GREAt. i have 3 1/2 year old twins and its hard. god bless you. be firm, say no on things, dont give in on things they want to make them quiet. my kids are testing me so im trying now before they get bigger and its hard. reward them if they good. take things away, give them warnings that they wont get a snack or whatever treats they get if they dont listen. time out or send them to there room. if there certain hours that they act up, start giving them minor chores to pre occuppy their time. maybe if your kids start seeing one is getting reward for good behavior that other sibblings will follow. good luck, being a mother is the hardest job

what age should you make kids start picking after themselves?

Q. When my husband's 4 yo daughter comes to visit (about once a month for 3-5 days, will be much longer this summer), the house ends up looking like a tornado hit. We have just been letting it go for a few days during her visit and cleaning everything after she leaves. What age is appropriate to make the kids start cleaning up their own toys? I'm starting to get a little concerned that if we continue to do this for her too long, that it will be too hard to change later on & lead to her taking advantage on other things as she gets older. Also, I don't want to live in a warzone of a house for a month this summer. I know kids are messy, etc but when/how do we teach them to start doing these sorts of things for themselves? I have no kids of my own & I'm still trying to find my place in all this (I'm sure other step parents will understand...) Other than DH's kids, I haven't been around kids much so I'm still very unsure of what I'm doing or should be doing

Answer
NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT!!! I would start that 4-year-old on cleaning up NOW. Make a deal that she can only have 1 thing out at a time and when she's done with that and wants to play with something else she puts the 1st thing away and THEN gets something else out. Sometimes that won't work, though. Seriously what 4 year old only plays with one thing at a time, right? Maybe let it go all morning and then before lunch have her pick up her stuff. Help her. Do it together. This way she won't feel like you are a mean person and it's hard for a little person to clean up all that stuff...it's much easier to get it out than it is to put it away, right? You can make a race out of it or you can help her put it away by making suggestions on what should be put away next. When it's all put away tell her what a good job she's done and maybe have her help you make lunch. Lots of positive reinforcement...make her feel like a big girl :)

After lunch let it go again and then before dinner (or maybe before daddy gets home from work) help her pick up again and again praise her for a good job. Don't do it all for her, make her help, but be there to keep her focused.

You are smart to ask this question, and you are correct in that if you don't start now it will be much harder later on.

Good luck.

What do i do about my neighbors kids breaking into my garage while i am gone and taking my kids toys?

Melissa

You see the kids are always coming to my fence and tearing down my bamboo fence and they go in my garage and take my kids toys while we are gone. I had given the parents a chance by telling them first and then on saturday i called the military police. they were told that day that they had to be outside with their kids. well on monday they just kept coming into my garage while i was home and taking my kids toys. Once again no parents in sight. Well the military police say there is nothing that i can do. I have turned into the talk of the neighborhood. There are people saying that my kids have taken stuff out of their garage but how is that possible when i watch them and these people went into my garage when i was gone again. Isn't it breaking and entering? Now i guess they are talking bad about my kids and i know not all kids are perfect but mine have been raised knowing it is wrong to steal they return things when they are left at our house. how do i tell them to stop talking about us

Answer
Regarding the kids breaking into your garage: I say you either find a way to trap them in the garage when the commit the deed, and then call authorities or maybe get a nice watchdog. That would scare the hell out of them. If you prefer to be diplomatic then set up hidden camera's in the garage catching them in the act and then threaten to prosecute the parents unless all damages are paid back.

As for everyone else's opinion, I say who cares! If they care to judge you and your family without knowing any detail then these people are not worth knowing or being concerned about. You worry about yourself and your family because when its all said and done people fend for themselves in the long run and don't care about anyone but themselves(generally speaking)

This girl that used to annoy me in middle school, well I ran in to her at a carnival.. I am not sure how we came in to contact again, but somehow I ended up getting her phone call.. She wanted to know if I could go to her house and babysit two children while she was at work. I have been asked to babysit before. I was a Counselor in Training at a summer camp with a bunch of little 5 year olds and had to take them up mountains and swimming and stuff. I did not however baby sit two little babies one 2 and one 3. I was fine with them.. The kid actually stopped crying for me, and apparently he never stopped crying for anyone.. The things I found odd:

I came in to the house and it looked like a bomb hit it with things in odd places every where

Toys were all over the floor

The house smelled like boogers

The house also smelled like cigarettes

The hallway in the house smelled like an uncleaned chicken coupe

The person's neighbor or something came while I was babysitting, and actually started to pick up the toys while I was with the toddlers.. There was a rasor/razor underneath all of the toys that were right under the kids

Bathroom was uncleaned... filthy, bathtub never washed, no cleaner or nothing

Floor had stains all over it and was filthy there was no working vaccume clean

Bathroom and kitchen floor were very sticky and gross

After I offered to help my friend clean (after she asked me to clean)... I found more.. Old dirty clothing and what not. She said it wasn't always like that and I could believe her.. may be if I saw it actually.
I visited her for a complete month. She spilled an alcoholic drink all of the floor after I used hot soapy water with a beah bucket and rag to clean it up.. Every night she would fill up the bathtub that was never washed ever and lay in it, drunk. She drank every night.. MM I didn't. I drove her around everywhere for whatever new welfare papers she had to get taken care of..
I unfriended her on my facebook account because I thought it was getting a little too wierd... I was very uncomfortable and felt like a homeless wretched brat.. it was aweful. It was horrible. I couldn't see myself being her acquantance. I did however clean her house in side out.. finding dog turds wrapped up in clothing and what not. Nothing too wierd... Just wierd that the floors were so sticky ew.. and the shower was never clean. I remember cleaning the toilet with something because it had such a ring around it. I think I just got up in the early morning with just a long night shirt on being so disgusted that i just cleaned it in my shirt and underwear, how gross..

So with all of that what would you do? Just stop contacts right?

Answer
It actually sounds like an anonymous call to Child Welfare Services (or whatever the agency is called in your state) would be in order. It sounds like the children are suffering from neglect, and might be endangered.

What kind of outside toys does your toddler play with?

iceyblue19

As the weather gets warmer I would like to take my son outside, he's 2 years old. I realize I'm going to have to buy some things haha. He already has a sandbox but we do not have sand for it yet. What does your toddler enjoy doing/playing with outside?

Answer
Make sure you get a bunch of fun sand toys to go with the sand box. It keeps my 4 yr old and her friends entertained for hours. Other toys that are popular with all the little ones:

Sidewalk chalk
Bubbles
Pool
Waterslide
Scooter
electric ATV
Tricycle
Bicycle
Any type of sport...basketball, soccer ball, Tball, etc.
Flying kites
Jumprope
Hopscotch
Tent and tunnel sets
Playground equipment (slides, playhouse, etc)
See Saw
Swingset and tire swing
Trampoline

We have them all, and they regularly get used. Needless to say we spend the summer, spring, and fall mostly outdoors

I am a kid/teenager and I need money! I am not just saying I need money because I want a toy or to get a phone or anything like that. I actually need money because I am growing and my clothes are getting small! My parents blew all of their money on a car and now they have no money to buy me clothes. But even if they did have money I don't like asking my parents for money because I feel mean doing it. Can anyone give me ways kids can get money? And something else BESIDES the usual like babysitting, dog walking, yard sales, lemonade sales and stuff like that. My parents will not let me do any of them so is there any other way? And also if you say something like selling stuff please be specific on what stuff to sell and where to sell it at. Please no lecture answers because I need money but my parents don't have money and my parents are over-protective so they wont let me do certain things. Please help! If you don't like this question don't answer it.

Answer
You said they're over protective and I'm not sure exactly how old you are but my first thought would be try and get a job. If you're that desperate which I was as a teen too, don't count out places like McDonalds and other places people stereotype as bad places to work. You can always get a job and work there while you still look for a new one if you don't like it. :) Also, if you try to get a job apply EVERYWHERE! Even little individually owned stores that no one goes into often, you may be surprised at who needs the most help. If you don't want to try this my net suggestion would be to try to sell something. Do you have a talent or a skill? You could give music lessons if you're musical, sell art if you're artistic (try Etsy.com if you do this), put an add out in the paper to fix people's computers if you're good with that type of thing. These are just suggestions but if you have something you're good at that you enjoy, put that to use and you'll make money and enjoy it at the same time. my next suggestion would be to try and volunteer, a lot of places will start paying you after you've volunteered regularly for a while. I know you need the money, but the economy is so difficult right now and business are hiring a lot more college kids who are over 18 or have a car because usually tthey need it more. A lot of people between 15-17 get overlooked a lot. Another thing is that when you apply, if you can fill out a paper application AND an online application if available. When you are home, call the business the day or the day after you apply and say "Hi, my name is ______. I just filled out an application and was wondering if you were hiring anytime soon?". If they say no or yes, PERSIST! But don't call more than once every 3 days or so, that's annoying. Also, some places may say "Now we're not hiring but the branch in the next town over is, would you be interested in working there?" If you have the transportation always say yes! :) That's all I can think of right now. Good luck! I know exactly what you're going through! Think about how hard it is for Adults to even get a job nowadays.

How would you decorate a unisex kids' bathroom?

Right now we have a baby girl but we know we want at least one more child that could be a boy or girl. The cabinets are espresso, the counter and floor are white marble, and the shower has white subway tile. The hardware is brushed nickle and we want to keep the walls white or really light.
P.S. no green please

Answer
Pick a neutral theme. Not a current cartoon character as they can be to camp and who know what will be cool in 3 or 4 years. Bathrooms for kids should be fun and kid friendly. Gives them something to look at during the dreaded potty training chronicles.

Reachable items are important.
Add a shelf for kid books.
A cubby for bath toys.
A low mirror and a stool that they can sit or climb on.
If finances allow put in a kid height sink.
Decorative wall vinyls are easily removable if you choose to alter the colors.
Bold colors are a plus.

I suggest a plain white or beige. Then add colors in the bath set, towels and rug. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3020/2563732291_aa24737d62.jpg?v=0 http://cdn.24.com/files/Cms/General/d/420/a4654f46fcfa41d5bba9a59357de6b4f.jpg

Personally I would run with a dolphin theme http://www.plumbingsupply.com/images/dolphin-bathroom-faucet-f50-1918bn.jpg https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9t9zr1zgCA0ZOfRsH4KXEf1zuFwGiGlWZaaxYfvkVmnj3VIZ-tpelu46wS0rnpJhWYUWuSxeYv908TYuS-ie94VwJtBwsVYdCj_kUYKoTJNyPR8mxAkpt7ewEmmkdiyUOGq4syDwx-lZH/s400/8.jpg

Do you notice that kids in this generation look younger than they look?

best new kids toys 2013 image

I noticed this from the beginning of kindergarten all the way to the end of high school though I didnt really say anything about it at firt until reaching high school. I was born in the year 1988 and I personally believe that people born in my year were the first ones to look younger than they look for the majority of them and people born after that year. Kids born before 1988 like between 1980 and 1987 all of them looked younger too except they looked more like adult kids and people born before 1980 definitely looked like adults and you would notice it when watching tv shows like full house and saved by the bell when they're teenagers they look like they should be 30. Now I'm not sure what people would say about this trend that oh looks dont mean anything whether you look younger or older. I believe it does because graduating in 2006, growing up with my age group even since elementary they just behaved like children. I know almost every kid would misbehave in elementary school or what not but people my age would keep up with doing mischief, even kids younger than me. When I was in 9th grade kids who were upperclassmen in 10th grade and so forth used to tell me that oh your class sucks all the kids your age and younger are idiots. Upperclassmen also were mischievious too but very less. I would say that my age group and younger would start a new generation. The only positive about this generation now is that the younger the look the more good looking you are but the more immature your behavior could be. Sorry if this is a stupid question or I'm confusing you guys but I hope you all know where Im getting at. Anyone agree.
I would rather hang out with older kids

Answer
No, your class is not the last class to look old. It's definitely my class, the class of 2013. I am suffering through exactly what you are it's actually scary. Like ever since kindergarten, I've always had an immature class (we were born in 1995 in case that matters) and now here I am at my senior year and we all still look and act like middle schoolers. Like I feel like the class that just graduated, the class of kids born from 1993-1994 were so much more mature and adult-like than us in both looks and attitude, and ready to move on to college. Idk this always annoys me because I hate looking young and want to look like how the seniors of last classes did haha. And the senior classes I'm comparing myself to don't even look half as old as the ones from when my parents were in high school! Like they all looked so cool whereas we look and act 13-14.but yea anyway, I completely understand and have no idea why this phenomenon is happening, and it is only getting worse. Like the freshmen this year look like 6th graders. Like by the time they graduate I feel like high school is just going to be a second elementary school with people giving out toy cars and **** at graduation. Maybe it's something in the water, maybe malnutrition, or maybe it's just better medicine as time goes on meaning well look younger for our whole lives and therefore live longer :)

How to make some cash as a stay at home mom?

april

I have no college degree. my boyfriend works a weird schedule, so I can't get a day or night time job. what would be a good way to make some money? (legally, no drugs or anything like that)

Answer
Can you write? Magazines are always looking for articles - every library has a copy of Writers Market 2013 in their reference section.

Can you sew? I do a nice side business making cat toys (I also pick and dry the catnip and design my own toys). You can retail or wholesale them.

Can you babysit? In home sitting does not require a visit from the city that in home day cares do (but you have to keep it under 5 kids a day).

Can you drive and have a car? Craig's List has several people offering 'rent a mom/rent a daughter/rent a helper' for people looking for extra help grocery shopping when they're shut ins, or for help painting a room or cleaning up the garage.

Can you walk? Dog walking is roughly $20 per hour, $10 per half hour (you can walk a dog 10 blocks in half an hour).

What toys does your 10 year old son play with?

who-wants-

My 10 year old twins (boys) don't seem interested in toys anymore. They're all about video games, movies, tv. Is your 10 year old like that, or do they still like to play with toys? and if so, what kind of toys? My kids also love to read. And they like physical activities like going swimming and playing sports, but those aren't things we can do daily or at our house. Board games they just seem to fight over and I can't always play with them to curb arguments.

Answer
That's normal but encourage them to participate in their sports. If possible they could play in the park or garden with their football/rugby with friends. Get them a few toys that are suitable for their age (wrestling toys, pokemon toys, spinning disks) they are lucky because they always have eachother to play along with. Good luck :)

What would be good party favors for a 10 year old boys birthday party?

blondie031

I want to make goodie bags for the kids coming to the party, but honestly don't know what would be cool for 10 year old boys.

Answer
Whoopie Cushions! Boys think they are hilarious! My oldest son is now 14. But a couple years ago they still did a Christmas Gift exchange at his school. Problem- you had a limit of $1.00. Tough to find something for a 10yr old for a buck. I went to the dollar store and bought a whoopie cushion. My son said that everyone in the class wanted one! And they were all jealous that they didn't get it.

Find items that kids think are funny! Then add some candy and gum. I don't think you could really do cars, trucks, or toys at this point. My 9 old doesn't play with that kind of stuff. We are in an electronic world unfortunately!

Do you think MJ was really a child predator?

Noble

I think he was a child. Child molesters aren't into kids toys. MJ climbed trees drove his scooter around hotel hallways and played his arcade games by himself. Molesters don't do that. He never developed past age 5. Never experienced the pecking order on the playground. Was never told no. Never got bullied or beat up in school. You actually don't mature without experiencing kids your own age. He died a 5-year-old.

Answer
I don't think so .. MJ was an angel

How many parakeets should i get?

Crysta

I'm a single mother with 3 kids ages 5,4,&2 I want to get a parakeet. I really want to just get one because it will be mainly my bird. I work 12hrs a day an because of that I think I might need to get two. I really want my bird to bond with me. Any suggestions ?

Answer
If you want to get a real bond with any bird...the number is 1 bird to get. If you are away for 12 hours a day, your bird will not bond with you anyway so get 2...Most people get parakeets because of what they look like instead of their temperament, so if you know how to spot a young one (bands across the forehead) you can usually get the babies to bond to you. Parakeets have air sacks instead of lungs and are often killed by drafts in the room. I would suggest 1 lovebird for a real connection between you and the bird. They can be bought for $25 to $35 depending on the breeder and time of year and they aren't near as fragile or as loud as 2 parakeets can be......Buying birds from Large chain pet shops can get you a large priced old bad bird. Find a breeder.
Lastly I am sorry to say, with younger children in the house, (same as cats) your bird will most likely be to frightened to let anyone take him out of his cage and will probably bite. Small children and birds don't do well together. I have rescued many birds from such a situation. Clipping wings by leaving the longest 2 or 3 on each wing un-clipped and snipping back the rest will go a long ways in training and keeping your bird from crashing head first into lit windows in your home. You want to leave enough so a fall won't hurt the bird but not enough to let it fly UPWARDS, straight ahead is ok. Good Luck ..keep the water clean and BLOW out the seed husks from the seed tray every day and replace with fresh seeds. veggies and fruits make for a happy bird also. Keep the living quarters clean, with lots of toys, no mirrors as some birds bond with their reflections and spit up food on them.

The family i am babysitting for has three kids. Girl (9), Girl (6) and Boy (3). What are somethings that i could do that would appeal to all three of them? (besides a movie or tv). And be specific if you say a game too. Thank you

Answer
Glitter pens on paper. Bring old magazines to cut and paste. Bring or make hand puppets from old socks use crayons felt glue or colored paper. Make cut and color brown paper sack masks. String colored cereal necklaces with a string and bobby pins. Glue cereal or different pastas to card board. Make treasure boxes for tiny toys from small boxes with colored paper or bits of old wrapping paper. Make tiny sandwiches with crackers cheese cold cuts and cookie cutters. Read books and do your own sound effects. Bring pop-up books they haven't seen of read some of theirs. ask them to show you a favorite toy or play thing ad tell you about it. Listen and ask questions. They will love telling you things. Even young people like to talk about their selves or one another. What do they do at school and do they have projects to work on. The boy will probably have an earlier bed time and tooth brushing and prayers may be a part of that. The girls need quiet games or books after his bed time. You will make for the little boy with his ideas and help girls when asked. The time and space has a lot to do with your selections and they may have suggestions. The boy will have stacking toys and cars and trucks. The girls may have American girl dolls or paper dolls they like.

Does anyone have any puppy training tips?

Heidi J

I have a 10 week old GoldenDoodle named Eilidh (AYlee). She's very sweet and I recently had to put a dog down for aggression. I don't want to make any mistakes this time. I have a dog training book (Dog Training Made Easy) but I would like to know of any other tips to train her the right way. We have been very careful not to smack her when she's "naughty" and we just yell "NO" in a harsh voice.

She's still not potty trained but we've only had her two weeks and she goes outside most of the time. When she does go inside, I know it's because WE aren't paying attention.

I guess what I'm asking is the proper way to punish her when she's eating my rug, or a shoe, or one of the kids toys. Right now we just say "NO" and give her one of her "Good girl toys.". Any ideas?
Also, I was told by my vet that she shouldn't go to puppy training classes until she is 15 weeks, after all of her shots. Will that be too late?

Answer
Its not too early to start on the sit-stay and down- stay and come.. When she begins chewing, give her any of the above commands, and be persistant about her doing it..that way, when you do give her a treat, it is for a job well done...It also shows her that when she tries to create her own job, that you have a better one for her..
The Basics
SIT, COME, DOWN, STAY, HEEL.

SIT

Holding a treat in your left hand just above the pup's nose, gently rest your right hand on pup's rump.
Slowly move the treat in an upward motion while applying gentle pressure to the rump. ( you don't want to push hard because if you do the dog will sit every time someone touches him and this is not good for competitive obedience)
as soon as pup sits say in a very happy excited tone "GOOD SIT" and give the treat.
Repeat exercise 7x. then take a play break and move on to something else.
very young pups should not train for more than a half hour each day
every time you put food bowl down or give a treat give the sit command, and wait for the sit. then once pup sits give treat or food down.
DO NOT move on to something new until pup has the new command down pat.

COME

walk away from pup about 10 feet to start. say pup's name and "COME" in a happy voice. once pup comes praise it lavishly have a bit of a play and give it a treat.
Gradually increase the distance you walk away. and eventually once pup knows command only treat every 3rd come. tapering off until he comes every time with out treat using only praise.
this will take a few days to learn if you practice every day.

DOWN

Start with pup in sit. move hand with the treat between the pup's front paws on the ground.
Say "DOWN" in firm but not loud voice.
pup might try and get treat without going down, don't let him have it until he downs.
praise in happy voice "GOOD DOWN"
repeat 7x

STAY

Start pup in down position. say "STAY" in firm voice. walk to end of leash, backwards. if the pup moves say once only "AP" in a not pleased tone. go back do not say anything. put pup in down again repeat "STAY" walk backwards to end of leash.
pup does NOT get praise or treat until he stays for 30 seconds, then a minute, then 5 minutes. move times up each week.
after he can do a 5 minute down/stay every time. move on to a sit/stay doing exactly what you did for down/stay.
Once on leash sit and down/stays are reliable for 5 minutes each. drop the leash and walk away from your pup, your back to the pup. about 10 feet away. wait 5 min. recall your dog. with dog sitting in front of you once he reaches you. treat and praise.

HEEL

Please do NOT train with a choke collar. i recommend martingayles .
with dog on a short leash exactly beside you on your left side say "HEEL" if the dog starts to pull give a correction snap with leash on collar. and recommend "HEEL" the second your dog complies praise with "GOOD HEEL" in happy voice. and continue to walk , correct, and praise for 30 minutes.

Always end training sessions on a positive note. Never get angry with your pup for not responding to a command. Praise lavishly every time pup responds to a command.

What are some good quiet car toys for long trips with toddlers?

I have ADD so loud toys in the back seat can be a bit distracting while driving. I thought about coloring books and crayons but if they are dropped she can't reach them because of the safety harness and they can melt when left in a hot car. I am going to get some board books but would like other suggestions.
I'm looking for a bit of a low tech solution.
I'm fine with music, it usually helps me focus really.

Answer
Yeah, crayons are a pain in the butt in the car! My car seat is covered with melted crayon, and it doesn't come out easily!

Have you considered DVD players? They're not so noisy that you can't deal with it. And they'll keep the kids seriously busy and quiet. You could even try to get them to wear earphones so that you don't have to hear it at all. But when we travel, we use a laptop to play movies, and connect it to the car's audio system to get great sound.

How long is the trip? If it's more than a couple of hours, plan on frequent stops and carry a good variety of snacks. You'd be surprised how long a bag of fruit snacks or animal crackers will keep a child quiet, especially if it's a favored snack or one she hasn't ever seen but likes.

What rc helicopter would you recommmend?

Kevin H

I am searching for them and the reviews are either 5 stars or 1 star. Each of them has a rating that says it breaks on the first flight and it also has a rating that says its really durable and its the best toy ever. What should I get?

Answer
The Air Hogs Havoc is a great beginner's helicopter and a great Christmas stuffer. It is nearly indestructable. Unless you abuse the helicopter, then it shouldnt be damaged at all. (Abuse as in drop stuff on it, shooting it) It is easy to control and easy to learn. Great for kids and adults. kids at least 8+

For toddlers, Little Tikes and Step 2 offer a wide variety of American made toys manufactured in Ohio, while Kid K'Nex is a great company for older kids who love creative building.

http://www.kids-toys-parents-love.com/Little_Tikes_Toys.html
http://www.kids-toys-parents-love.com/Step_2_Toys.html
http://www.kids-toys-parents-love.com/Kid_KNex.html

So in answering your questions, I prefer wooden toys, but availability and selection keeps our toy collection at 90% plastic and 10% wood.

Hopes this helps, and have fun playing with wood or plastic toys with your toddler!!

Toy that helps kids to put numbers upto 100 in order?

shilpi.cha

Does anybody know of a toy that can help my child put them in sequence up to 100, maybe a wooden toy or a board game? And where can I get one from? He is 4 years old. Thanks.

Answer
There are tile 100 boards that you can buy from educational retailers, but they are unrealistically high sometimes. Its a scrabble style raised grid with number tiles the child places in order.

This Montessori Site offers DIY products you can make at home. It has instructions for making a MTS (Sequence board of 100 board). Instead of laminating you could use fun foam to cut tiles, as well. Actually, the site includes lots of fun developing math concepts you can explore at home.

I did find one reasonably priced grid @ learningresources.com. Search hundreds board.

There are quite a few I would have to list:

Slinky
Barbie
Hot Wheels
Linkin Logs
Legos
Monopoly
And of course the timeless old favorites of a stick, a ball, and a rock. I have to agree with the cardboard box listed above as well.
All of these have withstood the test of time and kids are still playing with them today.

Can I reuse a manufactures toy packaging to ship an item to someone?

J B

I am shipping an odd shaped item and I found a box big enough to work, but the box is from a nascar race track my son got for Christmas.

Can I use this box and just tape my mailing label to it? USPS website says they do not recommend covering boxes with paper, so does it matter that it has a plastic window (to see the toy) and pictures of the race car set and kids playing???

Answer
I always cover my packages in paper if the box is see through or has labeling on the outside (and considering I an eBay seller, I do lots of packaging especially around christmas time. I have never had any problems with it before so I do not see why you would. Just use lots of packing tape.

I live in the UK and have a 17 month old toddler and 4 month old baby. Before my baby was born I bought a safety 1st tandem pushchair. Since birth my baby has always cried when in the back of the pushchair. He is fine in the rear facing single pushchair, but I need to use the tandem one to take both of them out in. Has anyone had this problem before, or has anyone any tips to make him like the pushchair?

Answer
Try to give him his favorite comfort things when he is in his spot in the pushcart - a toy, a soother or pacifer, whatever it takes. It is probably quite important that you get him used to it. Make sure the sun isn't in his eyes, and that he isn't cold or anything like that. Then the only way might be to put him in the cart when you are at home and give him a chance to get used to it while still at home. You might have to be willing to let him cry for a little while at first, while trying to find ways to make him happy.
