How hard is it to travel with kids?

Would it be very difficult for one person to travel alone with a 4 year old. I'm going to be taking her on holiday for a month but I've never done this before.

Is it difficult to travel with a child that age. Do you have any advice you could give me.

Answer
Always remember to pack snacks and a jacket (if it gets even remotely chilly where you are going). Bring crayons and coloring books and whatever electronic gadgets he/she enjoys (my daughter, age 4, loves the Nintendo DS and the Kindle Fire).

We travel frequently by car and have found that stopping about every 1-2 hours is to be expected. They have to get out of the car, stretch, run around (I always pack a soccer ball for playing with at rest stops), go to the bathroom and eat.
I also get on the road as early as possible in the morning. I pop the kids in the car at around 3-4am in their pajamas and by the time they wake up we are 3-4 hours into the trip already. At that point I find a place for them to change into sweats, eat some breakfast, go to the bathroom, etc, and then we hit the road again.
Just make sure you bring plenty of snacks and wipes for cleaning sticky fingers!

What is a good annual salary in America nowadays?

Erica

What is good? What is average? What about for someone who wouldn't want kids, and is looking for something they love to do that pays decently? I wonder.

Answer
median household income is $50,000 a year.

If you want a modern lifestyle with electronic gadgets and designer clothes and travel, you'd need more like $70,000, assuming that you live outside big cities.

How to get your parents to let you buy an airsoft gun?

I want an airsoft pistol badly, I am 16 and have wanted one for a long time.My dad had one as a kid so he doesn't mind but my mom is the opposite. She doesnt like the realistic aspect of airsoft guns and she dreads it everytime I ask for one. She doesnt like the things you can do with them all that that Bull so, any ideas on how to help her change her mind?
Money is not a problem, I am willing to buy it myself just I dont want to be the brat or evil guy and buy it without my parent's permission and have them get all angry and mostlikely tear up the house looking for it. I know hiding spots they dont or wouldnt think of but still not the way I wanna handle this situation. I might just buy one and have my friend hold on to it for a few years.
Oh please refrain from adding I am gay and stuff , I am not just it wouldnt be the best way to handle the situation in my opinion by shouting I am buying one of this wether you like it or not.
oh alright so someone suggested telling her about the safety of it, is that a good idea ? my dad is concerned about the the law surounding these things does anyone know a site where i can find the legal aspects of owning one of these ?

Answer
Show them statistics.

Tell them it is just a gun that shoots plastic BB's.
If they really have a problem that it might hurt somebody, get a lower grade FPS(Feet Per Second) around maybe 270 for a handgun. That isn't even enough to make a mark on skin(except for the eye, better leave that out).
Tell them you will were eye protection.
Go over to a friend that has it and show them how safe it is.
It also does not resemble a gun in any way unless you get up in the $600 category. It has an orange tip, and the models are completely off.

For a safe, low FPS(but still good) airsoft gun, try this:
http://www.airsplat.com/Items/AP-HA-112B.htm

For target shooting(not battles)eye protection, try these:
http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?products_id=2697

For shooting at friends/battles, try these:
http://www.airsplat.com/Items/AC-APP-VF-FLD.htm

Hope I helped.

*Edit* Here are the exact laws surrounding areas of the U.S.
Under Federal Law,
Airsoft guns are not classified as firearms and are legal for all ages under federal law, as well as the laws in each state. However, in some major cities and population centers the definition of a firearm within their respected ordinances includes propulsion by spring or compressed air, thus subject to applicable laws.
A 6 mm minimum orange tip must be present on the barrel end of the airsoft gun to identify it as such for any commercial sales. [1] Once sold, local laws may vary on whether or not the orange tip must be kept - in many places, no laws exist restricting one from removing or replacing the orange tip, but one should check the local laws before making such a modification.
Airsoft guns' trademarks must be removed where the manufacturer does not have an existing license agreement with the manufacturer of the real fire arm. For example: Classic Army has a licensing agreement with Armalite, so the trademarks can stay on imported replicas of Armalite's weapons. In practice enforcement is hit or miss. You might get an "unlicensed" gun through customs with trademarks intact, while a licensed gun might be held in Customs by an uninformed customs agent. House Resolution 607, sponsored in early 2007, would change this if passed, allowing imports to retain trademarks even if there is no agreement between the real firearms manufacturer and the replica manufacturer.[2]
In addition, the similarity between genuine firearms and airsoft replicas is close enough to provoke interaction with local law enforcement personnel if an airsoft gun is carried openly in public.
If someone were to, for example, attempt a robbery with an airsoft gun, they would be charged as if the airsoft gun were a real firearm.[citation needed]
New York City requires that all realistic toy or imitation firearms be made of clear or brightly colored plastics; furthermore, New York City makes possession of any pistol or rifle or similar instrument in which the propelling force is a spring or air, unlawful without a license. See New York City Administrative Code § 10-131(b) and New York City Administrative Code § 10-131(g)(1)(a)[3]. The rest of New York State is unaffected by these laws, and there are no state regulations limiting or prohibiting airsoft.
Michigan allows the purchase of Airsoft guns. However, they must have an orange tip on the barrel.
Texas allows Airsoft guns to be owned but most cities require that the Airsoft guns be discharged only while outside city limits.
Some cities in Illinois considers shipping or distributing airsoft guns illegal. It is officially now not illegal to remove the red top of the airsoft gun
According to New Jersey state law, airsoft guns are classified as firearms, and therefore, must follow state firearm laws regarding possession and purchase. Due to this, "technically", airsofts are legal in New Jersey. If you are going to play, you must do so on a private property.
In Minnesota, It is illegal for a child under the age of 14 to possess an Airsoft gun unless under the supervision of a parent or adult. It is also illegal for any child under 18 to purchase an Airsoft gun without parental permission. In Saint Paul and Minneapolis, airsoft guns cannot be carried in public unless they either have an orange tip, are clear, or brightly colored. Airsoft guns also cannot be carried in public if they have a laser attached. It is legal to possess Airsoft guns in these cities as long as they are transported in a closed and fastened gun case (in accordance with Minnesota firearm transportation laws) and unloaded. The vast majority of municipalities in Minnesota ban the firing of an Airsoft gun within the city limits.

What are some crafts to make with 6 and 8 year old kids?

my cousins come over all the time and they are 6 and 8 and we ALL enjoy Arts & Crafts. What are some things we can make? Please list LOTS of ideas and you dont have to add this but it would be VERY helpful: add materials needed and/or instructions.

Answer
I would recommend checking out www.crayola.com. There are several age appropriate crafts including seasonal activities, holiday art and back to school prep.
Paint is a fantastic medium that has many possibilities. You can use cut sponges, toy cars, plastic silverware, cotton balls, leaves, even vegetables and much more to make different designs on paper. You can also make paint by adding food coloring to different items (Karo syrup, shaving cream, baby shampoo) to see what kind of art results you'll get. Just remember to cover table tops and all work areas with newspaper or plastic and to wear an art smock or coverup.
Paper mache and homemade fossils (google for recipe) are bigger projects but just as fun.
Wrap a piece of tape, sticky side out on each child's arm. Go on a nature walk and find unique plants or flowers to stick to the tape. When you're home, cut off the tape and place another piece of tape over it. Mark with perminant marker the date and use as a book mark. You can also use a hole punch to punch a hole in the top and tie a ribbon through it.
Clear contact paper is great for projects too. You can find leaves, flowers, etc. to press then place between sheets of contact paper. Cut out to desired shape to hang from windows, use as coasters, or make a mobile.
Good luck with your crafts!!

Pretty Mag

my son is turning 2 in january. last christmas we bought lots of toys that he still has not shown interest in. now we know that his favorite thing is toy cars and trucks, so we bought several big ones, one remote control one, and then small hotwheels to stick in his stocking. BORING, or what? oh well, those are his favorite things in the world. sometimes i wish landon had a twin sister! those zhu zhu pets would be fun. and squinkies! (sp?) what is your toddler/baby/child getting?

Answer
Our 2 yr old got a tricycle, a mini punching bag and gloves (not a real punching bag, more like those ones that you hit and it falls down and pops back up) bathtub paint, and a GI Joe. Then we're going to put some hot wheel cars in his stocking.

How to get my kid to poop in the toilet?

Stephinato

Our 4-year-old (almost 5!) goes pee in the potty perfectly, rarely has accidents. He will not poop in the potty. He's done it twice. So, he knows how, but just waits until bed or naptime to do it in his pull up. If he doesn't have a nap or changes to his schedule happen, sometimes he will hold it until the next day. I've tried food rewards, toy cars (he loves cars)...I've tried talking with him about it, and even punishment a couple times. He doesn't care if he goes in his undies either. He's starting kindergarten soon and I'm afraid of what will happen.
My son had a language delay and requires speech therapy, so teaching him certain things was also delayed due to a hard time communicating but now I KNOW he understands what we want him to do, that big boys go in the potty, but he just won't. Any suggestions?

Answer
With my youngest, I had to go in the bathroom with him and hug him while he tried to poop. After he did it several times then he no longer needed that. Maybe that would help with your son.

Or you could make him take a boring bath (no toys) after each accident.

Also, redo your reward program. Have a brand new sticker chart, new rewards, everything. My friend gives her daughter chuck e cheese tokens when she goes potty. Maybe try that. Or make a chart that's really fun to put stickers on. Like print out an angry birds level with the pigs and then buy angry bird stickers for him to put on a pig every time he poops. Or use another character he really likes.
Get new candy and then make sure that in a normal day he doesn't get many sweets, that way the candy reward will be really tempting. My kids loved spongebob crabby patty candies, fun-sized candy bars, starbursts or suckers.

Sometimes it seems like nothing is working and then all of the sudden it just clicks. Hopefully with him, it'll click soon.

In a libertarian world should I have a product safety testing equipment savings account?

best paint for kids toys
on ... Painting for Kids and Best Buy Hand Painting for Kids at Best Price on
best paint for kids toys image

Growth vs

In a libertarian Republican world we would be responsible for testing our kids toys for lead paint, inspect our food and drugs like the FDA and USDA. But why? Why can`t companies have the morals, ethics, and empathy not to make and sell dangerous products in the first place, are they human? What is wrong with our fading generations?

Answer
Well, first off you have to decide whether you are in a libertarian world or a republican world. In a libertarian republican world you can have a ball that is all red and all green at the same time.

In a libertarian world, why would you need to do all your own product testing? There are ALREADY companies that provide product testing services long before the product gets to the store shelves. The largest of these is Underwriter Laboratories. Compaines pay large sums to make their products good enough to earn the UL seal of approval. Then there is ANSI, whose only power is to say whether a version of a programming language is close enough to specifications to use the name of that language. They are so powerful that Microsoft was forced to release C# when their new version of C was too different to be called C++. Notice, though, that ANSI had no power to tell Microsoft they couldn't release their language, only that they could not call it C++. Also there is Snell which gives more stringent approvals than the DOT does with reguards to motorcycle helmets. It is a niche market but it is a valueable one and every single biker knows that a Snell helmet is better than one that merely has DOT approval. Also there is the Consumer Union which publishes Consumer Reports so that you can compare the quality of various products that are already above minimum government standards.

The second point of your question, no doubt, is the fear of having to rely on your own judgement. Yes, in a libertarian world, nobody will be holding your hand and telling you what is good and what is bad. That may seem like a contradiction to what I wrote about UL, but nobody is forced to comply with UL standards. They make a profit because people recignize their trustworthiness. It is possible for a product to come to market without UL approval. Also it is possible for you to buy a product that UL has not approved. Given two nearly identical products, one with UL approval and one without UL approval, which would you choose?

Of course you didn't expect that question to be turned on you. Your actual argument is "sure I'd know enough to chose the UL product, but the lumpen proletariat is not smart enough to do so." That means that you believe the general citizen is an idiot, while libertarians actually trust in the self interest of the average citizen. We think that because they do not want to hurt themselves they will take some precautions to prevent themselves from getting hurt, and thus will want a safer product.

Companies do try to go above and beyond, which is one of the many ways they try to get an edge over the competition. There was a farmer who tried to do stricter Mad Cow testing, so he could advertise "My beef is safter than government standards, their beef is only to government standards." Guess who told him that he couldn't. Yep, it was the USDA. He was forbiden from having the empathy not to make and sell dangerous products in the first place, forbidden by the very organization you deem necessary to keep his product safe.

Finally, for those products that slip through the cracks, there is product liability. Fraud and false advertising would both be frowned on by the courts in a libertarian world. If all else failed (which it sometimes does in our world as well so you cannot use "if all else failed" as an excuse to reject libertarianism) then you can take the manufacturer to court if you were led to believe you were buying one product and you got something else instead.

Now in a Republican world, things would be completely different.

What would be a good paint color for my basement?

JennyH

We are getting carpet, which is pretty dark...(it was for free). We want to just paint the cement on the wall for right now, but want to make it look a little more brighter...more comfy down there. We plan to finish the basement with dry wall and ceilings in the future...it will be a slow project though, because it is not in our budget as of right now. I just want it to be a little more comfy...put the kids toys down there...a dart board, tv and couch. What are your suggestions?

Answer
If it's like a dark brown then maybe beige or light blue. I love dark brown and light blue :) but it depends on what furniture you're putting down there too because you want to create a color scheme so if your carpet is dark brown then your couch is beige you're gonna wanna go with maybe a beige wall.

What is the proper way to discipline a four year old?

Rebecca P

I have a four year old son and I work as a nanny for two younger children. My 4 year old is perhaps jealous of the attention I give to the other two kids ages 2 and 6 mo. but I try to show him lots of attention and love. My son pushes the little girl and takes whatever toy she is playing with. He will run off from me and just not listen. I know there is a correct way to teach him, firm voice and time outs do not seem to work. Thanks for your suggestions.

Answer
praise when he is good.- I liked it when you.......
praise 3 times as much as you admonish.
maybe you can read books together the 2 + 4 yr olds.
time out must be put in place for both 2 and 4 yr old if needed so he sees you being fair. by now you can help him with a stop watch and say when the alarm goes off that he gets a toy/ time with you etc.

Me and my friends want to make plush toys for children affected by the Japan disaster. Where can we donate to?

Yeah we want to give these kids a friend to share their feelings with while they go through a hard time. We just don't know what or how.

Answer
Please, DON'T make plush toys for children in Japan. Please don't start gathering food, clothes, medicine, etc. Please, please don't. It is so much cheaper and more efficient for response agencies to buy and ship these items from surrounding areas that are MUCH closer than anywhere in the USA. Plus, it's better for agencies to buy these new, or to accept donations in bulk directly from manufacturers and retailers, rather than going through donations made by countless numbers of individuals, which are often filled with inappropriate items (if you doubt this, go look at the web sites of international aid agencies and see for yourself that they are NOT asking for donated items to send to Japan).

Please donate financially to the Japanese Red Cross

Mercy Corps in the USA has set up a donation fund for its partner, Peace Winds Japan, and its emergency assistance on the ground.

How do you make Happy Meal Treats to take to school?

top kids toys under 5

top kids toys under 5 image

gensler97

I have heard of moms sending these to school before. They are individually bagged for each kid, with a treat that resembles a hamburger, fries ( I think it is those string chips ), a drink, and a little toy.

Answer
Are you looking for a little treat that is shaped like a hamburger and fries? Or are you looking for fun lunch treats in general?

Here is a snack combo treat that resembles a burger and fries. The "burger" is a cookie and the fries are like a peanut butter fudge. They are from quickcooking.com There are pictures at the website.

Cookie Burger
http://recipes.tasteofhome.com/eRMS/recp.aspx?recid=7956
INGREDIENTS
1 package (17-1/2 ounces) sugar cookie mix
2 drops yellow food coloring, optional
1-1/2 cups peanut butter chips, chopped
TOPPING:
3/4 cup flaked coconut
5 to 6 drops green food coloring
FILLING:
1/2 cup butter, softened
2-2/3 cups confectioners' sugar
1/2 cup baking cocoa
1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS
Prepare cookie dough according to package directions; add yellow food coloring if desired. Stir in peanut butter chips. Shape into 1-1/4-in. balls; place 2 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets. Flatten slightly with a glass. Bake at 375° for 9-10 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool.
Place coconut in a plastic bag; sprinkle 5 to 6 drops green food coloring into bag and shake until color is evenly distributed.
In a small mixing bowl, cream butter until smooth. Add the confectioners' sugar, cocoa, milk and vanilla; beat until smooth. Frost the bottoms of 22 cookies; sprinkle with coconut. Top with remaining cookies and gently squeeze together. Yield: 22 sandwich cookies.
"You may substitute your favorite sugar cookie recipe for the cookie mix; just add the yellow food coloring if desired and the peanut butter chips"

Peanutty Fries
http://recipes.tasteofhome.com/eRMS/recp.aspx?recid=7957
INGREDIENTS
1 package (10 ounces) peanut butter chips
1 cup sweetened condensed milk
Paper muffin cup liners (2-1/2-inch diameter)
Red icing, optional

In a microwave, melt peanut butter chips with milk; stir until smooth. Pour into a foil-lined and greased 9-in. baking pan. Cool completely at room temperature. Lift out of the pan and invert onto a cutting board.
Remove foil; cut into 3-in. x 1/4-in. strips. Fold muffin cup liners in half, pressing out creases; fold in half again. Fold point under; use as holder for fries. Use icing for ketchup if desired. Yield: about 3-1/2 dozen.

What are some costumes that are easy to make for Halloween?

Q. I am 13, and this is my first Halloween with two other friends. There are no good costume shops for kids around here, so I decided it'd be best to make my own. You can suggest ideas for all three of us, or one just for me.

What I have so far:
- Charlie Brown styled ghost (white sheet with two holes cut out for eyes)
- Fairy

Answer
I know!

1.evil/goth ragdoll
get a black dress and rip it up a bit and make sure its above the knee [kinda like a long shirt], get white shorts that go to your knee and get a white cloth and stain some "blood" on the white cloth, sew it on the black dress [like lob sided] and then get 2 buttons [or cut 2 red circles from a cloth] and sew it on the top corners of the white cloth, get red and white striped long sock or black and white striped long socks.make your hair in ponytails and then add some red yarn to make a ragdoll hair effect
basicly try to make it look like this

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41WcunAME5L._AA260_.jpg
as far as makeup just make your face a little pale and then add a chelsea smile [look it up its pretty cool] using red lipstick.n add heavy amount of black eye shadow

2.theres a fairy,
you just wear a cute dress and some yellow leggings and a pair of yellow wings :) get yellow, pink, and blue eyeshadow and so something cute

3.you can be a Vet,
go to a thrift store and i know that there has to be a doctor uniform somewere in there [in every thrift store ive been in there ALWAYS was atleast 1 doctor gown or uniform] get a pair of those things the doctor uses to listen to someones heart and put them around your neck like the doctors always do. then get a little toy dog or cat and get toilet paper and wrap it around one leg and stain "blood" on it, not to much just a little blood.

4.high school/middle school graduate
http://www.flickr.com/photos/daydreamconcepts/2959165744/
something like that, you can make your own hat
and just wear a purple dress and get a "diploma" by just getting paper and wrapping it around and tieing it with a rubber band

5.a cat
sooo easy, so do i have to explain?
black dress and buy or make some a tail and some ears

6.a crayola box [ i was this last year] just get some leggings [colorful leggings and wear them and wear a tank top as a shirt, those are under garments.
then somehow make a box using cardboard and color the box to make it look like this
http://www.flickr.com/photos/25264699@N06/2401773542/ [look at the box on the back]

have a happy halloween:)

Is Lucas Arts going to make any more Star Wars movies?

best kids toys 2012 image

pMaster

I think all of the star wars movies are great, but what happens after Luke save the galaxy?? Some people would like to know. I have read stories of him and Leia getting getting married and having kids but i don't like to read books i want to watch it in a action film.

Answer
Unfortunately no amount of "waiting, or kicking back, or being patient" will change the facts. The fact is that there will NOT be anymore live action Star Wars movies ... anyone who says differently is so full of it that it is pouring out of their ears. I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the book series come out in an animated form, doubt it will be to theaters more likely direct to DVD things, but there will not be anymore live action movies.

We all know that Lucas has the ability to change his mind with the direction of the wind but in this case I think we can believe him. In the years since the release of ep III Lucas has been asked two questions over and over and over and over again ... first, will he ever make anymore Star Wars movies and will he allow someone else to pick up where he left off. For the past four years the answer to those two questions has never changed ... NO ... and ... NO ... that's about as close to written in stone as you can get from Lucas. It only came to light last year but shortly after the release of ep III Lucas made a "minor" change to his Will. Everybody still gets all the same "stuff" BUT it has a condition to it now ... if any one of them ever allows anyone to make more movies or remake the ones already done everybody looses everything. We are talking millions and millions of dollars here ... do you really think they will risk it ... neither do I.

I do have to say that this is the first time I've ever seen anybody "witching" about Luke and Mara getting married ... personally I thought they were the perfect couple.

The future of Star Wars is animation ... the current series is running full steam ahead and will be around for a long time ... the live action TV series set in between ep III and ep IV is on track to debut in the fall of 2010 ... Lucas is still looking at the target date of 2012 to bring all 6 movies back to theaters in a true 3-D format. There's a ton of stuff that will be going on in the Star Wars world but none of that stuff will be new movies ... ticks me off too but George owns it all lock stock and barrel and what he says goes.

May The Force Be With You ...

EDIT: To "Boba Fett": Not really ... lol ... keeps my point total up. Now the "reboot" Star Wars questions ... hell hath no fury like an old school fan having his memories messed with ...

EDIT 2: Unless Lucas changes his mind ... then I'll be just another idiot who took him at his word and got hosed again ... I think might have to grab my toy lightsabres and go have a "talk" with the man if he does that ... lol ... but only after he's done making the new movies of course.

.

Lovely

unfortunately, I am pretty selfish. I fear that my maternal instincts wont kick in or something!!! Are there any former selfish women out there that changed when the baby arrived, if so please give me details. I would love to hear your stories.

I am 18 wks pregnant, I love to travel, shop, treat myself to spas, spend like crazy, spoil myself with electronic gadgets like the most current car to come out, current phones and new DVD blue ray (stuff like that).

Answer
Well on the up side, someone new to shop for! If you have people to watch your baby sometimes then it prob wont be so bad. If it is just you and only you 24/7 then you are in for a rude awakening. I loved to shop, I called it a sport, one I was damn good at! WIth just one kid I think you can still travel and do some stuff just bring them along. You prob wont have time or the interest to get the newest stuff. I still havent the time how to work the ipod I got two years ago!! I still consider myself a bit selfish but the kids come first always no matter what and it is kinda automatic. I didn't fall madly in love with the girls when they were born, it took a little time for me to get to know them and then oh boy, I am in love with them. I did however fall in love with my son from the minute I saw him. He is blissfull.
Don't worry you will be fine. It sounds like you have enough money to get help if you need it. Start looking for help now it is hard to find a babysitter or nanny you can trust.
Good luck and enjoy the ride!!!!

For health reasons, should parents buy their children more outdoor toys and less electronic toys and Gadgets?

jim h

Should parents make their children get away from their TV's , computers, and electronic games and make them spend a certain amount of time outside day actually physically playing or working?

Answer
How about like they did in the old days, give them NO toys

"Go outside and push a hoop with a stick or something"

People had to be creative while playing a while ago, now everything is done for the kids, no wonder they're so stupid.

How Can I get my kids massive amounts of toys organized for them?

best kids reading toys image

grindinggr

My kids love their toys, but only when they can find all the peices of the set. what are some good organizing ideas??

Answer
You need to buy bins and a labeler. Categorize the toys such as all transportation toys (airplanes, cars, firetrucks) all go in one bin and label according to what is in it. Then move on to the next set such as games and do the same thing. Keep going and when you are finished call the kids in for a "training session" and teach them where everything goes. If your children are too young to read then you place pictures on the bin of the toys that are in that particular bin. It is a lot of work but well worth it in the end. If there are some toys that the children do not play with then maybe you should consider taking them down to the goodwill so they can donate them.
Take care!

As the weather gets warmer I would like to take my son outside, he's 2 years old. I realize I'm going to have to buy some things haha. He already has a sandbox but we do not have sand for it yet. What does your toddler enjoy doing/playing with outside?

Answer
Make sure you get a bunch of fun sand toys to go with the sand box. It keeps my 4 yr old and her friends entertained for hours. Other toys that are popular with all the little ones:

Sidewalk chalk
Bubbles
Pool
Waterslide
Scooter
electric ATV
Tricycle
Bicycle
Any type of sport...basketball, soccer ball, Tball, etc.
Flying kites
Jumprope
Hopscotch
Tent and tunnel sets
Playground equipment (slides, playhouse, etc)
See Saw
Swingset and tire swing
Trampoline

We have them all, and they regularly get used. Needless to say we spend the summer, spring, and fall mostly outdoors

What do you do when your toddler is whining and crying for no reason all day?

That one

Just wondering how other parents deal with it. My 21 month old daughter is very really annoying and whining all day. I can't seem to find anything wrong with her. She's fed, changed, has lots of toys and I've been playing with her on and off all day. I'm taking her to the pool to swim this evening but at this moment, she's is really bugging me. How do you deal with it when your toddler is acting like that?

Answer
I find with my 23 month old daughter this happens all the time too. I have recently started ignoring the behavior that I don't like (thee fits, whinning and crying), and encouraging the behavior that I do like. When I see her playing alone, she asks for something nicely, or whatever it is that is not crying I make sure to notice it and tell her how much I appreciate her doing the right thing. I have noticed that in the last few days her whinning and crying have drastically gone down. She is much happier and is always trying to get the positive attention since I am eithdrawing the negative attention. Good luck!

What advice would you give to a new mum about raising kids that you wish someone had told you? My babys due on Christmas Day!

Answer
1. You won't need half the crap that you bring to the hospital with you. And it will be a pain in the butt to carry it all home.
2. There are tons of stupid baby gadgets out there. Don't get suckered into things like baby wipes warmers, knee-pads for crawlers, etc.
3. It will be much harder than you ever expected, and so much more rewarding than you ever expected.
4. Let your partner help. Insist that your partner helps.
5. Even with a newborn, you need time alone. Give the baby to your partner, a grandparent, anything, and get out of the house for an hour, ALONE! Get a pedicure, buy a book, or just go grocery shopping by yourself, at least once a month.

Signilda

Not too expensive, please. I can't afford all those electronic gadgets. Thanks

Answer
*They have the "lump o' coal" stocking stuffers at many retailers that have different gifts inside. Personally my oldest son collects cars. So what I bought last year was a pack of two that had the hotwheels inside.
*You can buy those small remote control cars ( I mean matchbox size small). Which seems to be a big hit with kids and parents alike b/c they are cheap and are not too space consuming. They can be found at walmart for about 3 or 4 dollars.
*Pack of Batteries.
*Finger Flashlights.
*One of their favorite cartoons or movies on DVD. I know it sounds expensive but relatively not. Walmart had ones like Spiderman 2 etc for 2.96.
*School Supplies( things you were going to have to buy anyway, its an even better idea if they are into drawing etc.) *You could get pencils, pens, colored pencils, etc.
*A Watch.
*Yo-Yo.
*Want to try something different and unique? How about going to a local museum or novelty store, you could buy some space food/drinks,lunar ice candy and funny gifts like talking pens or whoppie cushions.
*If they have a collection of some sort (rock, stamp, etc.) you could buy them something to add to that collection.
*You can buy those handheld games (starting anywhere from a dollar at dollar stores and walmart and on up. )
*Some cool Spy gagets/gear.
*If they like Harry Potter you could buy them some of those harry potter jelly beans in a bag for a dollar. They have many weird and different ones with burn toast flavor and many more. I bought several b/c they are very neat. They even come in a purple bag that can be reused. They also have choclate covered bugs, and Jelly slugs and range from 1.00-3.00.
*Socks.
*A Hat.
*I got Nextar 512 mb Digital MP3 players for 9.99 a few days ago.(TOYS R US)
*What about bath gift set ( or singles ) Like Axe or Bod. You can get body sprays, colognes, deoderent and body washes.
*Gloves.
*A small box of nascar shaped chocolate cars. (you can get their favorite racer if they are into nascar)
*Do they play a sport or an instrument? (get them something related to that, new knee pads etc.)
*If they already have some electronic gagets how about some accesories for it, like new earphones or skins.
*A book.
*A science experiment book.
*Video Games if they already have a system like psp, xbox, playstation etc. You could get them a new game or any one that you think they would enjoy.
*A new toothbrush.
*How about some nostalgic candy assortments like:
Candy Buttons
Candy Cigarettes
Wax Fangs, Bazooka
Jaw Breakers
Mary Janes
Candy Necklace
Cinnamon Fire-Pix
Atomic Fire Balls
Chick-o-stik
Sugar Daddy
Lemon Heads
Boston Baked Beans
Licorice Pipe
Root Beer Barrels

*Wallets
*Electric Toothbrushes
*Electric Razors (if its that time)
*Their Favorite magazine.
*Their Favorite Candies

I go to our Eveything is a dollar store, where I buy a huge stocking for both of my boys (you see these elsewhere for 15 dollars or more). They stand about 2 and a half to 3 feet tall. Not a bad deal for a dollar, and have good quality, they withhold all I pack in them and hanging up. Good luck and I hope this helps. Happy Holidays !

Are you more of a "toy" grandparent or a clothing, socks and underwear grandparent?

Monty

Christmas time, birthdays, any other time you give your grandchildren a gift, do you give them toys or clothes and practical things?

My mother in law thought it totally disgraceful that I always gave my own kids toys and games. Clothes when they needed, but most often, toys and games. Now, as a grandma, I still give my grandkids the video games or electronic gadgets that they particularly want. Leave it to their other grandma or whoever, to give them the clothes.
What is your feeling on this?

Answer
We always buy toys for the grandchildren when they are young but when they get older then we give them a choice of a gift card or clothes.

What are good simple American items to bring in exchange to a foreign country?

karimoberr

Going on a mission trip to Brazil and was looking for more ideas than just American flags and postcards. Also, I'd like to bring some simple toys over for young kids, but what could I get them that wouldn't be a choking hazard?

Answer
From my work in other countries I know that if you're in a developing area the kids love crayons and pens. Bring coloring books too. I'm sure that many of the people could care less about postcards and flags, to be honest. Collect old baby clothes before you go and donate them when you get there, they can always use clothes. When I went to India, I left most of my clothes there. In a place where the kids don't have a lot of toys you need to watch what you bring becuase they will fight over stuff if you don't have one for every kid too.

How do you raise a child to be indifferent to Santa?

Jamie's Mo

As in, neither "believes" nor "disbelieves." My mom never forced Santa on us, I don't agree with telling my son an old fat guy breaks into and enters millions of homes and is judgemental about who's "naughty or nice."

I grew up just fine knowing Santa wasn't real. So don't bother telling me I'm going to "ruin his childhood and destroy Christmas for him." Christmas isn't about how many toys you get, its about family and helping others IMO.

Answer
My daughter has known that there was no Santa since last Christmas, when she was 4,almost 5. She learned all about him from school, which sometimes bugs me since they teach them alot of nonsense, and beliefs i dont agree on. Like referring to the Native Americans as Indians. I had to explain to my daughter that you dont call them Indians, that Indians live in India. Anyways, about Santa. She came home and told me all about Santa. I explained to her that there is no Santa, that i(a single mom) am the one that goes out and gets her all her presents. She didnt have a problem with the idea whatsoever, and i think it made her opening her presents that much more gratifying for her and for me. After opening all her presents, she would told me, "Thank you mommy for getting me all these presents, i loved them all, and i love you so much!" Why give a fictional fat man all the credit? A couple days ago i babysat, and my daughter(now almost6) was talking to her friend(8yrs old) about Xmas. Her friend was telling my daughter about Santa, and my daughter simply told her that he wasnt real. Of course the other girl got angry and started debating, and my daughter didnt fight over it. But when she left, she found it interesting that her friend believed in him, and i told her it was ok that other kids believed in him, as long as she knew the truth.

Answer
•When dealing with children, praise more, criticize less.

•Never say no to a gift from a child.

•Your children get only one childhood; think of this when you “don’t have time” to play, hug, kiss, and express your love for them. Make time for I’m sorry, I’m listening, I love you.

•You is smart, you is kind, you is important. [Kathryn Stockett in The Help]

•Children need models rather than critics. [Joseph Joubert (1754-1824)]

•You teach people how to treat you. It starts when your children are born. If you tolerate poor behavior, your kids will expect to get away with deplorable actions.

•There are two things you can and should give your child: roots and wings.

•Eliminate toy clutter. Children of all ages will play more creatively and independently with five toys than they will with 50.... Fewer toys allow a child to focus more effectively.... [John Rosemond in “Living With Children” 2011]

•Dealing with kids: It takes a thousand “attaboys” to erase a single “you're not good enough.” [Dr. Phil 2/12]

•A parent’s time is the coin of childhood. {Alema Pequoia}

•Children are our future: raise them with love and discipline; teach them respect and kindness.

•Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.

•Children seldom misquote you. In fact, they usually repeat word-for-word what you shouldn't have said.

•A child who learns to manage a little courtesy, even under pressure, is a child who is operating well in the world, a child with a positive prognosis.

•There’s nothing that can help you understand your beliefs more than trying to explain them to an inquisitive child. [Frank A. Clark]

•Treat the Earth well: it was not given to you by your parents; it was lent to you by your children. [Kenyan proverb]

•Manners (otherwise known as “social skills”) are at the heart of the whole parental enterprise. Every infant is born adorable but selfish and the center of the universe. It’s a parent’s job to teach children that there are other people, and that others have feelings that can be hurt.

•We are all children sometimes, in our heart of hearts. [Jude Morgan in Charlotte and Emily]

•Little child, little problems; big child, big problems. [Anna Quindlen in Every Last One]

•We don't get most of our fears as adults; we bring them from childhood. [David Wiltse in Close to the Bone]

•It’s easier to build strong children than to repair broken men. [Frederick Douglas]

•Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, you should cherish every moment and realize that the wonderment growing inside you is the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle. [Erma Bombeck (1927-1996)] (baby, childbirth, life)

•In the same way that you cannot choose your parents, neither can you choose your children. [idea from “The Talented Mr. Ripley”]

•Fill a child’s bucket of self-esteem so full that the rest of the world can’t poke enough holes in it to drain it dry.

•The only role models who have an actual impact are the ones at home at your dinner table.

•God should double your patience when you marry and triple it when you have children. {Alema Pequoia}

•Spare the rod and spoil the child is a warning, not a commandment.

•Even children have good ideas sometimes, probably because they have not yet learned prejudice and obfuscation, and do not screen their possibilities. {Alema Pequoia}

•If you truly love your children, give them more time than anything else. Your time is really all you have that is genuinely yours to give. {Alema Pequoia}

•Remember: What you do, what you say, how you listen, what you allow to happen in your family and household is the attitude and behavior you are modeling for your children that they will absorb and apply to their own lives in the future. {Alema Pequoia}

•Pay attention—real attention—to a small child. The adults who did that when you were a kid are probably your role models.

•Parental Commandments: Be consistent. Actions have consequences. Say what you mean and mean it. Parents work together as a team. Don't make promises you can't keep. Listen to your children. Establish a routine. Respect is a two-way street. Positive reinforcement works much better than negative reinforcement. Manners are universal. Define your role as parents.

Education-wise, fun-wise, or just best-seller.

Answer
There are quite a few I would have to list:

Slinky
Barbie
Hot Wheels
Linkin Logs
Legos
Monopoly
And of course the timeless old favorites of a stick, a ball, and a rock. I have to agree with the cardboard box listed above as well.
All of these have withstood the test of time and kids are still playing with them today.

What should I sell at a yard/garage sale?

Q. I have 3 games I am gtting rid of already.I have LOTS of clothes and shoes. I also have computer games (little kid ones)...what about those???

Please tell me what I should sell and if the stuff I'm already gunna sell is good?
Sorry it's under this catagory!!!!

Answer
Hi, everything you said is fine but I would try taking those computer games to one of those places you can trade them in on different games 1st. Every thing and anything can be sold at a yard/garage sale. House hold (silverware, plates, glasses, pictures, nicknack's), clothes (kids clothes are a huge seller), shoe's, toys, bike's, bedding, crafts, collectibles, house paint, tires, tools, yard garb, appliances, book-magazines, cars, ATV's anything you want to get grid of. I've also sold hot dogs 2 for $1, just the cheapies and cold pop a $1 a can and made a hall and just that. Drop numerous packages of the cheap hot dogs in your crock pot with water, turn it on high and it's all good. If you want to get rid of the left over sale items when it's all said and done, call like the Good Will, Disabled Vet's, Lupus foundation, Salvation Army at least 1 week in advance to line them up and they will come take your donations and give you a receipt for your donation for filing as a tax write off. Make sure you have Big Bright signs all around your neighborhood to bring in the buyers. Good luck.

What games of war do kids play these days ?

D700 dug

When I was young and WW2 was a recent memory all our war games as kids were fighting as either Germans or Allied troops shooting one another with sticks and toy guns as kids do.

( We never pretended to be Japanese soldiers as they were considered to alien and despicable )

I am just wondering do kids still play "War" ?

if so who are the good guys and who are the baddies ?

Do kids remember Vietnam ? Do they shoot "terrorists"?

Answer
they play a video game called call of duty. the newest one in modern warfare 2 and in it you play as task force 101 and try to crash a terrorist organization. in the online mode, you and 11-17 others play in evenly numbered teams or free for all and kill each otherr. the game is played in a first person mode and consists of factions that are randomly assigned before each game. within the community friends can start clans and groups etc. the game is considered controversial because you play as a terrorist and shoot innocent people in an airport in one level. it is rated 17+ but most parent permit kids as young as 7 to play. i am 14 and play 2-10 hours a day and at least 15 hours every weekend. players level up from 1-70 and can do this over and over 10 times. compared to some 10 hours in one day is very little. outside of the video games it is a rare happening.

My 7 yr old son is always getting notes sent home that he talks too much fools around too much and doesn't listen. I've tried taking away TV for the night or the computer for a week, Video games are gone for good. He still doesn't stop talking or listen when he's told to do something or stop doing something. He's broke and crushed all his crayons, he's doodled on his worksheets. He can do the work he just would rather talk and not do what he's told. He's not that bad at home but I do see him getting worse than he was. It's at the point where he comes home and goes straight to his room. Am I being too strict? I've tried to talk things out with him and he knows exactly what he did wrong and why it was wrong but when the "why did you do it" question is asked the answer is always "I don't know". It's getting to the point where I'm missing out on doing stuff with my only son because he's always punished. What should I do?

Answer
As long as you're being consistent, you're not being too strict IMO.

It sounds a bit like he is either too smart for his classes and is bored, or is perhaps overly energetic.

Make sure gets excersize each day. Keep his diet is as free of sugar and caffiene as possible, and be sure he's getting enough sleep at night to wake easily in the morning. It's amazing how much can be solved by just burning off excess energy and getting enough sleep not to be cranky.

If he's too energetic, putting him in his room may make the problem worse. Perhaps some chores would be a better punishment, or an exercise he doesn't enjoy. Running laps or doing push-ups may make him resent those exercizes, but it may also help drive home a point about constructive ways to use his energy. At the very least, he'll be a stronger, healthier child.

Practicing good behavior can also help.

My daughter had trouble paying attention at that age. It wasn't that she didn't care to behave, she was just off in her own little world.

We would literally practice listening at home. I would read her a short story and have her tell it back to me straight away, so we could spot it immediately and she could learn to recognize when she was zoning out.

I also notice that she gets better grades in school when she's participating in an after school activitiest. She's not an overly athletic child, but she's been able to find non-competative sports she enjoys that let her get moving without making her rue her awkward feet.

My three year old son simply doesn't like to follow orders. He will literally argue that day is night. With him, we have to use many carrots and many sticks.

We have five beads strung on a ribbon for him. A bead goes up when he's listening well, and down when he doesn't. When all the beads are at the up, he gets a treat. When they're all down, he loses a toy or a priveledge for a while. Exceptionally good behavior will send all the beads up immediatley, and tantrums will lose hime all beads and get him sent straight to his room.

We create easy tasks for him we know he's likely to do, so we can give him a treat and reinforce that he's a good boy. That way, when it's something he doesn't want to do, he has the experience to know that cooperation can be worth the reward. Hopefully, we're also molding his self image to be that of a cooperative person and good citizen.

Try finding what your son can do that makes him proud and give him plenty of opportunity to do it. If he identifies himself in a way that's positive, he will live up to his positive self image. If he sees himself as the kid who always gets into trouble, he'll live up to that as well.

I know this was long winded. I hope you found some helpful tips in it.

Best of luck.

As for the ADD debate, unfortunatley, while some of the people here have had success stories, some of us were less fortunate.

There is no physical test for ADD, and the lists of questions used to determine if a child has ADD are too generalized and cover many symptoms that are common to other problems. Too often, other causes for the symptoms are overlooked or not even searched for.

The instances of misdiagnosis is high and the risks from the medication can be higher with failure to thrive being seen in most children who receive long term treatment and heart problems and psychotic episodes being commonly seen.

Too many parents have seen their children suffer through the effects of the drugs for extended pereiods while the doctors adjusted the prescriptions only to learn that their child was dyslexic, hard of hearing, had some emotional trauma that affected their behavior and ability to learn, or some other such problem.

To top it all off, studies have been done to show that children diagnosed with ADD show “no differences in adolescence between the drugged and the undrugged children in school marks, in number of grades failed, in amount of hyperactivity, or in antisocial behavior. The problems of organically hyperactive children seemed to linger on, whether or not they had been drugged.”

With the number of misdiagnosis so high, the risks from medication so substantial, and the benefits so debatable, it would be sheer folly not to first try common sense lifestyle adjustments to diet, excersize, sleep, and discipline.

If none of that works, always get a second opinion before allowing a child to take such controversial drugs.

How can I creatively decorate my kids rooms without painting?

af

I have a 7 yr old boy and a 3 yr old girl. I need ideas on decorating their rooms without painting them. Thanks.

Answer
1. Cover wall space with your child's own original artwork.
2. For young children, use crepe paper on a roll (available at teacher's supply or craft shops) for finger, sponge, or other tactile painting. You can lay the paper flat, let your child paint to her/his heart's content, and then hang the finished painting from your child's wall. Another method is to hang blank sheets from ceiling to floor like wallpaper and let your child 'body paint' right onto the wall. This can be a fun activity for the whole family, as long as you don't mind getting a little messy yourself. Make handprints, footprints, and splatters. It's like coloring the walls, but without the parental wrath and permanent damage.
3. Older children may already have a collection of artwork from school art classes. Turn your child's room into a mini-museum by framing your child's drawings and paintings with paper, pegboard, or wooden frames, and hanging them throughout the room.
4. Finally, pre-teens will enjoy the time-honored tradition of the magazine collage. Use a removable, non-damaging adhesive (such as Sticky Tack) to arrange clipped pictures of movie stars, favorite musicians, and coveted shoes all over the walls. The best part of this decorating technique is that your child can add to it every day.
5. Liven up white walls.
6. If your child's heart is set on changing the color of the walls entirely, try using wallpaper - without actually pasting it up. Take a trip to the home goods store and pick out paper samples or remnants. Don't worry if the remnants aren't large enough to cover the whole wall - creating a collage of different patterns and colors is part of the fun.
7. To add texture, choose some fabric remnants from a crafts store to hang as tapestries. If your child sleeps in a bunk bed, fabrics can be hung from the sideboards to create a "tent". This can make the room feel bigger, and creates a great place for pretend!
8. Add 3-dimensional interest.
9. Hanging mobiles aren't just for babies. Fill some space in the room by fashioning a "chandelier" out of old toys, stuffed animals, or any lightweight objects. Older children might enjoy making mobiles that reflect their hobbies. Baseball cards, old ballet slippers, and sports ribbons are all good materials.
10. Hanging fabric from the walls - attached only at the top with some neat finishing nails - adds a splash of color to a room, and you can always take it down. Also try hanging picture frames (with nails through the fabric) on top of the fabric sheet to have a nice picture collage.
11. Add decorative knobs to the furniture. Thousands are available now, you'll find one that will relate to something important in your child's life - their favorite sport, an animal they love... You can even get them really involved by letting them paint their own knobs!
12. Self-stick, peelable, wallpaper borders, murals, and designs. They do not damage the walls, yet add a lot of color and character. Has your son out-grown ABC's and cartoon cars? Peel them off, wash the walls, stick on the Batman borders and stickers. They are available at many places that sell wallpaper as well as on-line. They will last for a year at least. Actually, these self-stick borders are nice for adding an easy splash of color to any room. Some of these products are 'cheap-looking' (like shelf paper), but many are indistinguishable from quality wallpaper.
13. Remember to hang art and other decorations low enough for the child to appreciate... and yes, touch. Too many nicely-decorated children's rooms have the pictures, shelves, etc. all at adult height. Who cares if it looks like it came out of a magazine? Whose room is it anyway? Put that ABC poster down at toddler level so she can appreciate it.
