My budget is $50-ish each... What are some good Christmas gifts for kids 18 and under in foster care?

Jim I

Last year, my office worked with a foster care program in our community. We bought gifts for the kids and the families.

The family gifts included:
* a gift certificate to Wal-Mart
* a gift certificate to Blockbuster
* A box of popcorn
* Small boxes of candy
* McDonalds gift certificates
* A board game
* A disposable camera

For the kids, we bought different gifts based on ages:
* Portable CD Player
* Barbies
* Stuffed animals
* Disney toys
* Art supplies

Well, it's that time of year again, and I need some suggestions. We spend approximately $50 per kid/family, and there will be some attendees from last year. Santa doesn't want to bring the same gifts again, so he's trying to come up with some new ideas.

I'd love to hear of good suggestions for these kids... this is largely what they get for Christmas. They are in attendance for the event, but Santa does hand out the presents.

Thanks, and Merry Christmas!!!
Tangible gifts for the kids... the gift certificates are for the family's to buy clothes or other necessities.

We aren't giving a kid a gift certificate.
No clothes... too hard to shop for all the sizes.

I hope everyone will mark this as an interesting question. I have already received emails about it! :)

Answer
18 and under? That is a large catagory, but the $50 budget helps with that. Teens 13-18 years of age might like something more having to do so with electronics than the rest.

The only thing I can think of that is about that price range that I wanted that age period was an MP3, Nintendo 64 (old gaming system, but lots of fun), Atari, and Money. If the kids have a computer, then maybe a nice MP3 would work! :) There are tons of MP3s at walmart that are in the $25-$40 range and work about just as nice as an iPod. Nintendo 64s are always fun no matter how old they may be (you can use this for children too) The normal systems are anywhere from $20-$40 on ebay and in wonderful condition, and the games are available at almost any pawn shop, and some video stores rent/sell them. Ataris are hard to find now so some may be overpriced, but you could find a good Atari Flashback for about $25-$40 on ebay, the Flashbacks are better because they have all the games already built in. If all else fails, there are always cheap electronics like digital cameras, cds, and tvs at Wal-Mart, and gift cards! :)

Younger kids 9-12 might like a variaty of things like maybe some of them want to be grown up already and have an MP3 of their own? That's where the $25-$30 MP3s at walmart come in handy. You can also buy them game systems that are under your $50 budget. A few kids here might want a DS, but who can aford that on a tight budget!? Insteed older versions of gameboys that are priced down now might be just the thing they would like. Legos are always wonderful to have, the smaller ones that is. They're fun to play with and lots of kids love them. The art supplies is always a good idea, kids like to be creative, so why not let them be for a small price. :)

Now, the younger ones 5-8 will need something that intrest them and can't hurt them, because some at this age still don't understand 'don't put that in your mouth'. Also, at this age they want to act all grown up so cuter cheaper version of digital camera would work. Those fake laptops that are for educational or other kinds of gaming are very nice for kids this age. Barbies and Littlest Pet Shops are great ideas for girls. Boys might rather have the MatchBox toys and Action figures. You can always get them play food and a toy cash register and/or cart too!

Ages 2-4 might rather have coloring books, crayons and fisher price toys. Nothing really hard to think about there, and they'll always love stuffed animals! You can get the even littler ones stuffed animals or toys that make noise.

For families Wal-mart gift cards and digital cameras would be nice. I hope these give you some good ideas for presents, and Merry Christmas to you too! ^-^

Question about Sims 2 baby and toddler development?

Q. What do you need to buy in order to have a good baby and toddler devolpment? I baught a crib, bunny head, xyphlephone (i know i spelled that wrong), peg box thing, and a mini toilet. Am i missing anything? And what actions should my sim do to raise the child right (like should i teach it to walk and read it books or something)??? i just got the sims 2 a couple days ago so any advice would be great. thanks!

Answer
Newborns: Babies are just like in the original Sims games. You feed them when needed and basically like a real child. Excuse me not knowing much about this one, since I mostly skip that age.

Toddlers: Toddlers are very curious and energetic. If you click on them, you would see there wants. Complete those to make their mood better. For actions, have your sims teach the child to talk and walk. With the mini toilet, potty training is the most difficult, well if you do not use cheats or such. Train your child frequently on the toilet so they will get accustomed to it. As soon as that is finished, your toddler will stop going in their pants, and go to an accessible mini toilet. Then, just give the child attention and affection. They toys are a good way to have the toddler get a head start on learning new skills. Also, If you like, you could buy the changing table. It will be a place to put you child in everyday wear or pajamas, also of course, for changing their diapers.

Toys for infants/toddlers?

Q. My son is currently 3 months old and we are cramped for space, so I want to make sure he enjoys the toys we get for him. What toys do your children love to play with? And does anyone know of a good crawling toy that will work on carpet aside from toys that throw balls everywhere (don't get me wrong, I already have two of them :]). I'm willing to buy toys beyond his age (up to three) if there a good chance he will one day love them. Also, what shows do your toddlers love? It doesn't seem like there are any good shows on tv anymore and I'm about to buy a ton of blues clues and little bear DVDs

Answer
Age-appropriate toys

With so many choices, shopping for just the right toy can be an overwhelming (and expensive) undertaking. Our guides will help you find age-appropriate toys that will bring joy to the babies and toddlers in your life. In each guide, we've included information about children's development, so you'll know why a toy makes sense at a particular age.

Pick the relevant age, and go:

Toys for birth to 3 months
Toys for 3 to 6 months
Toys for 6 to 9 months
Toys for 9 to 12 months
Toys for 12 to 18 months
Toys for 18 to 24 months
Toys for 24 to 30 months
Toys for 30 to 36 months

Dog wont stop chewing Kids' toys..?

Q. Our English Mastiff puppy (about 10mths) wont stop chew the kids' toys. She has plenty of her own!! Our other dog, a 2 year old Black Lab, doesnt have this problem. Does anyone have suggestions?! please!
The kids are 5 & 3.. So, its difficult to keep them put away. I will try the substitution! thanks much Mike.

Answer
Make sure that your puppies toys are not similar to the kids (like stuffed animals) and never toys shaped like shoes and slippers. Not sure why its difficult for the kids to keep their toys picked up at age 3, they should be doing it...not you, but thats getting off topic. Every time the puppy grabs a child's toy, firmly say "drop it" and take it away. If you see her going toward your child's toy say "leave it". Giving an appropriate toy at this time will help reinforce what she is allowed to have.

One thing I did when my dog was a puppy was teach her boundaries. She learned she was not allowed in the bathrooms or my daughters room. That is great especially when the kids have friends over that are nervous with dogs. Our dog has a basket for her toys (though she never learned to pick up, but not for lack of tying on my part) that she goes to for a toy or bone. She will nose through till she finds the one she wants.

toys for the kids?

Q. what's the hottest toys for infants, toddler boys and an 8 yr old girl??? What's the best that they never seem to get sick off???
my son is only 7 months but when he turns 1, whats the best toys??? I have the fisher price drop and roar dinosaur. i saw it and just had to get it

Answer
Kids like big toys it seems. Yes, big toys are more expensive but they don't seem to get thrown into the toy box after 20 minutes. One year olds like ride on toys and things like that. Toddler boys like the same thing. They also like places to hide such as forts and tents. As for an 8 year old girl--they're all different. Some like dress up and some like playing house and cooking with pretend food and some like make-up and dressing up Barbies.

Lego Star Wars 2?

KATTALNUVA

How do you get the powerbricks in chapters 2 and 3 of episode 4?

Answer
leGO Star Wars : The Video Game is a video game based on the Star Wars-themed toy line by the LEGO Group, taking place during the prequel trilogy (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith), with an end segment from A New Hope. LEGO Star Wars was released on April 5, 2005, a full month before the final Star Wars film premiered.

It was developed and published by Traveller's Tales and Giant Entertainment for the Xbox, PlayStation 2, and Windows, with Griptonite Games developing the Game Boy Advance version. All versions were distributed on April 5, 2005 by Eidos Interactive and LucasArts. A Mac port, developed by Aspyr, was released in August 2005. A GameCube version of the game was released on October 26th 2005.

Lego Star Wars was billed as a "kid's game" and received the "Game of the Year" award from Kidzworld.com but nonetheless peaked at the top of the UK charts during early May 2005. It later lost the spot to the official game of Episode III but maintained a consistently high chart position through the month.

The cutscenes do not include any speech at all, with the characters simply gesticulating and relying on the players knowledge of the films to fill in the story. However, on the GBA version of the story, some speech is shown in text above or below the game.

A sequel, LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy, was released September 11, 2006 in Europe and September 12, 2006 in the United States.

There are a total of 56 playable characters. The playable characters are modeled like actual LEGO parts (but with far more mobility) and are divided into groups according to certain skills. Jar Jar Binks, General Grievous, and Grievous' Bodyguard, for example, can jump higher than most characters. Jango Fett can shoot faster than any other character with a blaster and can also fly (essentially hovering). The 9-year-old Anakin Skywalker and young Boba Fett can crawl in narrow or small spaces where other characters are unable to go (despite, rather humorously, being no smaller than the other characters). The astromech droids R2-D2 and R4-P17 are able to hover over chasms, open certain doors, and disable other droids, with the exception of General Grievous. Qui-Gon Jinn can swing his saber four times by attacking in the right pattern, instead of three like the other characters. Yoda has three different modes, the first walking with his cane, the second is floating in his hover chair, while the last is his lightsaber mode where he leaps and flips around while swinging his saber. Darth Maul uses a double bladed lightsaber that is slightly faster, and General Grievous has four lightsabers, but cannot use the Force. All of the different Jedi and Sith have their own unique style of lightsaber wielding (except Shaak Ti, Ki-Adi Mundi, Kit Fisto and Luminara Unduli, as they copy Obi-Wan's moves), and can use the Force to solve certain puzzles. The Sith have "Dark" force powers, that can, unlike the Jedi character's force powers, be used on black bricks. Any unlocked character (besides the Droideka) can be found walking around in Dexter's Diner (and subsequently getting into fights), the area from which you choose what level to enter, and also where you can view any vehicles whose parts you have found. LEGO Star Wars also has a feature called 'free play', which enables the player to play the same level again, but with the ability to switch between characters and thus get into areas containing extras the player was unable to get before. A player can use any character they have unlocked in freeplay. You can even have good and evil team up, such as Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul. The free play option will only appear when the player finishes a level. Levels that are played in vehicles cannot be played in freeplay, but you are able to be replayed in story mode like all the others. Some characters, such as Chancellor Palpatine, the PK Droid, and the Gonk Droid, can't do anything but walk, although they are never attacked in the case of PK Droids and Gonk Droids, giving them the ability to traverse the levels unharmed.

Because Lego Star Wars is based on the Prequel Trilogy (Episodes 1, 2 and 3), Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and other characters from the original Star Wars trilogy are not shown in the game, as they appear in the sequel, Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy.

This game was released before Revenge of the Sith was released, so many people bought the game to see what happened in Episode III, therefore shooting up the sales. Some people waited until they saw the movie to buy the game, so the movie wasn't spoiled for them, as its basic plotline was shown in the game. This was warned about in reviews of the game.

Every character has an ability besides moving with the exception of three: Chancellor Palpatine can only jump, the PK Droid can only move, and the Gonk Droid is very slow and cannot jump. However, the latter two are not attacked by enemies, so they can pass through dangerous areas safely as with any other droid character. (Except for the Battle Droid, Super Battle Droid, Droideka, General Grievous and Grievous' Bodyguard.)

Some characters included are Obi-Wan Kenobi (Padawan, Episode II, Episode III), Anakin Skywalker (at several ages: Boy, Padawan, Jedi Knight, Darth Vader), Qui-Gon Jinn, Darth Maul, Jar Jar Binks, Padmé (Battle, Clawed), Jango Fett, Boba Fett, Clone Trooper (pilot, battler, normal, defender, walker pilot, stormtrooper) Yoda, Count Dooku, Kit Fisto, Luminara Unduli, Chancellor Palpatine, Ki-Adi-Mundi, General Grievous, Chewbacca, Wookiee, IG-100 MagnaGuard, Queen Amidala, C-3PO, R2-D2, TC-14, Mace Windu, and Darth Sidious
The Game Boy Advance (GBA) version of Lego Star Wars has several differences (mostly for the sake of portability), including fewer playable characters (15), devalued credits (grey pieces are worth 1, blue 5 and yellow 10 credits), fewer levels and only one player character on screen at a time and cutscenes are still renders of the home console versions. However, it still remains a fairly large cartridge (128 mbit).

All lightsaber users are able to deflect blaster shots aimed at them (provided they are attacking the shot), and each character has his own style. They also are the only ones able to use the force to interact with undeployed platforms and switches. However, unlike the PS2, Xbox, GameCube, and Pc versions of the game, blaster shots can only be deflected if they are headed straight towards at you at the front, not the back or sides of your charatcer. Blaster characters can charge a shot by holding the button, making it stronger and able to pass through several enemies. However, as they don't have the shot deflecting abilities of Jedi, their use is quite limited

Where can you buy a toy sewing machine for a 3-year-old?

Elle

The only ones I've found are real, working machines. Obviously I need something that doesn't use a real needle, a toy machine suitable for a toddler. I found some vintage ones made in the 70s on eBay but nothing new. Does anyone know where I can buy a new one?

Answer
Try amazon.co.uk. they usually have new and old ones.

or woolworths online.

what should i get my kids for christmas 2012?

Q.

Answer
You should edit your question and be more specific.

Do you have boys or girls? Or both?
How old?
What do they like to do?

The new Furby, is going out of stock as soon as it hits the shelves, so i'd probaly stick to some outdoor activity toys. Or some movies. Or just a visa gift card if they're older

Where are good ideas for Christmas present for kids?

Q. I have 4 neices/nephews from 3 to 10. Where's a good place to get ideas for gifts for Christmas? And is it better to buy online or fight the lines of Black Friday?

Answer
There are many lists put out by different toy stores, kids magazines, etc.

There is the Toys R Us Fabulous 15:
http://www.santaschristmascorner.com/toys-r-us-fabulous-15-toys-r-us-2012-holiday-hot-toy-list/

Also, K-Mart has it's own Fab 15 list:
http://www.santaschristmascorner.com/k-mart-top-15-christmas-toys-for-2012-part-1/

There are others, but I don't know the URLs off the top of my head.

As far as online vs black friday, I personally shop online. One, I don't like to get up early. Two, I don't like being trampled by people trying to get the 3 TVs for the special price. And Three, you will usually find bargains just as good or nearly as good online if you keep your eyes open.

Do your kids ask for *popular toys* or *top Christmas gifts* for Christmas?

Q. Like things they see in TV commercials or things they hear their classmates talking about? Or do they seek out things they have a truly specific interest in?

I've noticed as my kids get older they don't seek out the tv stuff or the stuff their friends talk about but they look around for specific interest things.

I have just discovered, recently, a website called fat brain toys and man has my 9 year old been having some kind of blast jotting down things from that website lol.

BQ- Know of any interesting places to shop for kids? So far I've found some pretty cool things from uncommon goods, think geek, fat brain toys, top notch gifts and places like that (not just for my kids but relatives and donations).
Oh des! I just clicked on that website- edmund scientific- and I - am - in - love! Got to order everything. ha ha ha

Answer
My kids ask for EV.RY.THING. they see on TV. Everything. I have no idea what they really want because they want everything. When my mom asked my 4yo what he wants for Christmas, his exact answer..."I want everything in the whole world." See, I told you.

ETA; It's new this year and driving me nuts. We used to watch Netflix programming a lot (no commercials) or DVR'd shows that I would FF though, but due to budget cutbacks, I got rid of both, and am now HATING network kids' TV because of all the stinking toy ads.

Cognitive Table Top Toy for School Age Children- ANY IDEAS?

Pammyla

I need a creative idea for a cognitive table top toy. In other words..i need a game which involves any sort of subject that will catch attention to school age(4-12 yrs). I need as many ideas as possible. ;)

Answer
Ok..you say Cognitive Games--and MANY ideas!!!
I've copied a few ideas from my website that is dedicated to school-age care professionals. The following are from the "Table Top Games and Literacy Threads" ...

WHY?...â¦.BECAUSE
Each person writes down a question beginning with âWhyâ
Example, Why do cats meow?
Fold the top over to hide the question, and pass it the next person-- who without looking at the question-- writes an answer starting with âBecauseâ (for example, Because I hate broccoli!) Then read out all the questions and answers. Why do cats meow? Because I hate broccoli!

HANG MAN FOR KIDS WHO CANâT SPELL!
Most people know how to play the traditional version of Hangman. This is for children who canât yet spell!
Play it like 20 Questions. Think of something (like you would for 20 questions) and have your partner think of âyes-or-no questionsâ to guess what it is. Each time there is a no answer-- add another part to the Hangman.
You may find the older kids also like this version!!!

BEAT THAT! ......Dice Game for Age: 5 to adult
Skills: Number, Place value, Strategic thinking
Need: 2 dice (up to 7 dice for older players)
Paper and pencil for scoring
How to play...
Roll the dice and put them in order to make the highest number possible. If you roll a 4 and an 6, for example, your best answer would be 64. Using 3 dice, a roll of 3, 5 and 2 should give you 532, and so on. Write down your answer, pass the dice, and challenge the next player to âBeat That!â
Play in rounds and assign a winner to each round.
For a change, try making the smallest number possible! This is a great game for reinforcing the concept of place value. If you are playing with younger children, explain your reasoning out loud and encourage them to do the same

Silent Hangman
Need: Flip Chart or board and marker or pen.
Like original hangman, children guess the mystery word; however, they are not allowed to speak while trying to find out the letters. This game is a good way to settle children down. When a child wants to guess a letter they must draw the letter in the air with an invisible pen. Caregiver or leader will then write it in if it is correct--- or write it to the side if not. The caregiver or leader should also not be able to talk.

Donât Forget Table Games of:
Mad-libs (done with enthusiasm), Cross-word puzzles, Word Games, Word Search, Hangman...
Board Games of: Boggle, Scrabble, Scrabble Jr., Nerdy Wordy, Banangrams. Balderdash, Staff made Jeopardy (tic-tac-toe style). Taboo
Traditional Bingo and for younger children â
Bingo using pictures (a great variety of themes may be downloaded at: http://www.dltk-cards.com/bingo/index.htm
also Uno as mentioned above.

How do I use this wooden toy?

Gizmo

It consists of three wooden parts, and a string tied in a loop. The three parts are:
1) a disk-like piece (3 inch diameter), with two holes near the center about a half-inch apart for the string.
2+3) Two handle looking pieces, each with a small hole through the side for the string.

The string goes through one handle, then one of the holes in the disk, then the other handle, then the other hole in the disk, and is tied in a loop.

Answer

What is the big deal with spoiling a child? I buy my kid lots of toys and clothes?

Q. and ppl think he is a spoiled brat. Well my kid isnt a brat and he is well behaved. Why is it tht people think because you have money your kid is a rich brat...get to know the kid first people!
As a child I was dirt poor and now I have the lifestyle where I can provide everything for my son *toddler* and people say he is spoiled (I dont think he is, I say he's blessed) Rich or poor, just cant win!

Answer
There's nothing wrong with spoiling your child. You're the parent, you know your kid best than anyone else.

For me, though, and this is my opinion. I want to show my children love in other ways. Most people associate love with giving of material belongings. I do give my kids books, toys and clothes but I am conscious of doing it only when they're deserving of them. Otherwise, they get my time, attention and outings.

I show them that I love them in different ways. It's important to me because love does not always equal material things. Besides, they have to earn what they get otherwise they may grow up thinking that the world owes them something. Nobody owes them anything and they won't get anywhere unless they work hard, right?

Spoiling a child can happen in different ways. Not just material belongings. A child may be a brat because they don't get positive attention at home and so goes around misbehaving because that's the only way they get attention. The best way to avoid this is through lots of positive reinforcement.

Most people do tend to think that children whose parents happen to have money are spoiled. It may be because they believe the children don't learn to be appreciative of what they have. Maybe because they think that the children don't learn to sympathize with children who don't have as much. As a teacher, I've seen many
"rich" kids being unnecessarily cruel to other children.

I'd say, go ahead, give your child what they want and need if you can. That's our dream as parents isn't it? However, it may be a good idea to also volunteer at a homeless shelter, or teach him/her to donate clothing or toys. Teach them about our social responsibilities and they'll be even better than they are now.

What's the deal with kids meal toys and young adults?

Reed Ellis

Why do I periodically see commercials advertising kids meal toys, but the commercial shows young men (between 22 and 25 years old) using these toys. The one commerical that stands out was for a digital watch in Burger King meals. I can't remember what was on the watch, but nothing geared toward this age group.

How do I get a scared child to ride a motorised toy?

seema p

Answer
A friend of mine, who shall remain nameless, recently went all out at Christmas time to buy her child the latest and most expensive motorized outdoor riding toy she could find; a John Deere jeeplike toy with a driver's seat and a passenger seat and a space in the back to carry toys or anything else that caught the child's fancy. The parents knew the kid loved John Deere, so they thought he would love his little riding toy. The problem was, after spending all this money on this expensive toy, the kid wouldn't ride it. In fact, he didn't want anything to do with it. What's a parent to do in a case like that?

Not every child will have this problem, of course, but it's a pretty good bet that if it's the first time a child has had a motorized riding toy, it's going to scare him at first. While you and I might not think of a child's riding toy as particularly powerful, think about it from the point of view of the child for a moment. This vehicle is moving forward on some power other than his; it isn't as easy for a young child to connect 'let off on the accelerator' with 'stop' as it is for him to connect 'stop pushing this scooter' with 'stop', for instance. If a child gets into a motorized toy without knowing exactly what it will do, how to make it do it, and how to make it stop doing it, the child is going to feel that the toy is out of control (even if it's only 'out of control' at two miles an hour and you're right there with him), and he's going to be a little frightened.

The best cure, of course, is prevention; take the time to explain to him what it will do, how to make it go, how to make it stop, what kind of noise it will make, how fast it will go, et cetera. You may wish to have the child sit in the passenger seat and use your hand to press the accelerator to begin with, until they can see how pushing down makes it go and letting off makes it stop. If you could somehow drive it the first time and have the child in the passenger seat watching you, that would be best, but unfortunately, that isn't really possible.

If the child has already tried to ride it on their own, though, and been so scared that they won't touch it, it will probably take time to get them used to it so that they feel comfortable enough to try again. Encourage the child to just sit in the toy without moving at all; have them make 'motor sounds' and perhaps turn the steering wheel. Next, have them sit in the toy while you push it. Again, have them make motor noises (and make them with them if you possibly can) and turn the steering wheel. Demonstrate, first with them watching from the sidelines and later with them in the passenger seat, how pushing the accelerator makes it go and letting off makes it stop. And above all, be patient with them. Eventually, in their own good time, the child will feel comfortable enough with the toy to want to try it on his own. And once he does, it's a good bet that he won't stop.

Answer
things that are colorful...make noise.....taste good...it doesn't have to be 1 toy that has all of these....shining lights......interactive toys.....not to mention popular expensive ones they see on tv....watch some commercials with them and see how they interact with some of the toys on tv....they might jam along with the music if they like the toy or might even say "i want it i want it i want it"

another good idea is when the kid sits on santa's lap and says what he wants for christmas....or writes the letter to santa...if you just read the letter or ask him what he wants santa to give him or listen for what he tells santa...it's in the bag.....

another idea is to bring him to the toy store when getting something for a friend of his....for say a b day party...and see what he nags you to get....when he whines and screams for something....he wants it.....and take note of what he's screaming for....

those are a few suggestions...for an 18 year old without kids...that's not too bad (i had a twin brother so i'm trying to think what my mom did to figure out what i wanted for christmas)

I need kids birthday ideas (ages 5-7).?

Tim M

I am going to rent a empty gymnasium for a kids birthday party ages 5-7. Can you name me some stuff we could do except play soccer.

Answer
How about the little bowling pins and balls? The plastic ones aren't expensive and easily found in the toy store. There are several bean bag toss games. You could also set up a great obstacle course for them to run. I think that could be pretty fun. Have a small table set up for face painting and/or a crafts station. There are lots of really inexpensive things they can make or paint and have so much fun. You could even set up a cupcake decorating station. Have fun.

Oh yeah? Do you use electricity every day? Do you eat fast food? (Does it make itself?) Do you have toys, including electronic toys? Do you have any idea how much energy it takes to make them? Have you EVER bothered to look it up? You're obviously using the Web. You have a computer and a broadband connection. "You adults." Kids are just as guilty, sweetheart. Top Attractions in California? 10 points?

I am Thinking to Travelling to CA on a vacation , Is Los Angeles the best Part of California?

and what's the top tourist attractions there?

Thanks very much.

Any answers would be appreciated.

Answer
There are literally hundreds of things to do here in LA. Here is my list of âmust seesâ for families with kids. Visit as many as you have time for.:

Disneyland: The Happiest Place on Earth. Half a billion visitors canât be wrong. #1 Destination.
Universal Studios: A theme park that grew out of a studio tour. #2 Destination.
Even if you donât visit Disneyland or Universal Studios Tour, Downtown Disney District and Universal City Walk are very fun places to visit for shopping and eating. And theyâre free to visit. If youâre adventurous, try the indoor skydiving (www.iflyhollywood.com). Itâs a blast!

Hollywood: Hollywood Boulevard is ready for its close-up, thanks to years of urban renewal and renovation. Most kids wonât really like the Walk of Fame or Chinese Theater, but they might enjoy the people dressed in costume who stand in front of the Chinese Theater. They will pose with you or the kids, and expect tip money. Right across the street is the El Capitan theater, which was restored to its former glory, is owned by Disney and shows Disney movies.

Other theme parks include Knottâs Berry Farm and Six Flags Magic Mountain, which are both more geared towards the fast-ride teen crowd.

Olvera Street/Union Station: Olvera Street is the birthplace of LA, and it emphasizes our Mexican heritage. In addition to the Avila Adobe (oldest building in LA), you can eat at some pretty good Mexican Restaurants, do a little shopping, and taste a churro. If you donât want to go to Tijuana, this is as close as it gets without going there. Union Station has great architecture from a bygone age. Also, you are 2 blocks from Phillippeâs (see below).

Santa Monica Beach and Pier: Great beach scene and a classic seaside amusement park, complete with antique carousel that has been in a lot of TV and movies. (The Sting and "Three's Company" come immediately to mind).Bubba Gump Shrimp Company right on the pier. Kids love the rides on the pier, and the games. Or just playing in the sand.

Griffith Park - Home of the Los Angeles Zoo, Griffith Park Observatory, Travel Town, the Greek Theatre, Pony Rides and Griffith Park Railroad, Merry-Go-Round, and Gene Autry Museum of Western Heritage. While the zoo is not as good as San Diego Zoo, it is still good, and enough to entertain most kids. The Pony Rides and railroad are for the younger kids. Travel Town is a rail museum where youâre not SUPPOSED to climb on the engines, but kids have been ignoring those signs for 40 years. The recently renovated Observatory is a lot of fun. Or you can just play in one of the picnic areas in the park. There are plenty of toys to play on.

Los Angeles Science Center: A favorite museum for kids for over 40 years. Exposition Park, by the Coliseum.

Discovery Science Center, Santa Ana: The big cube right next to I-5, exit Main St.

Los Angeles Childrenâs Museum: Located in the Hansen Dam Recreation Area, currently under construction. Original location near the music Center is closed.

La Brea Tar Pits/Paige Museum: What kid doesnât like dinosaur exhibits?

Aquarium of the Pacific, Long Beach: Lots of fun marine exhibits for kids to explore. And the mac and cheese at Bubba Gumpâs across the street is good, too.

Legoland, Carlsbad: This is more of a San Diego attraction, but kids 10 and under generally love it.

Places to Stay:
Since LA is so spread out, there is no single place that is close to EVERYTHING. Most people who come here tend to stay in Hollywood, Santa Monica, or Anaheim. In Hollywood, I recommend the Orchid Suites, Hollywood Celebrity Hotel, or Holiday Inn Walk of Fame, all near Hollywood and Highland. In Santa Monica, the Holiday Inn Santa Monica is close to the pier and reasonably priced. In Anaheim, I recommend the Howard Johnson (HoJo) Anaheim, and the Candy Cane Inn. There is also a nice place in Burbank called the Best Western Media Center, very close to Warner, NBC, and Universal Studios.

Places to eat:
In-N-Out Burger: Multiple locations, best burger in LA, ask anyone.
Pinkâs Hot Dogs: 709 N. La Brea, just north of Melrose. You might even see a celebrity. Maybe.
Tommyâs Chili Burgers: Look for the shack, an LA tradition. The original location is at Beverly & Rampart, a couple miles west of downtown.
Canterâs Deli: 419 N. Fairfax, between Beverly & Melrose. Near CBS, you might spot a celebrity.
Phillippeâs: 1001 N. Alameda. Great roast beef sandwiches. Near Union Station and Olvera Street. Watch the mustard, itâs hot.
Titoâs Tacoâs: Voted best tacos in LA, even though itâs in Culver City. King Taco is a good alternate if you can deal with East LA.
The Pantry: Corner of Figueroa and 9th, downtown. Huge portions, they never close, GREAT steak and eggs.
Medieval Times and/or Pirateâs Dinner Adventure: Dinner and an adventure show, both are on Beach Blvd in Buena Park, you get to eat with your hands.

Hot Christmas toy for 2010?

rachel

I have been researching, and haven't found a definite answer on what the hot toy will be for this Christmas. Last year was Zhu Zhu pets, and everyone was spending ridiculous amounts of money to get them. Any idea of what it is this year? Do you think that Justin Beiber doll could be a big hit? Thanks!

Answer
Well it could be but I doubt it. Justin Beiber is pretty popular but a lot of people in 2010 are wanting a lot of technology type stuff like ipads, iphones, video games, and similar. This page http://theperfecttoys.com/christmas-2010 may help you get a better idea of what toys will be hot for Christmas 2010. It really depends on the age group also because what may be hot this year for a toddler, isn't going to be hot for a 10 yr old and so on.

toddler christmas craft idea?

Samantha

i was thinking of some cute ideas to do with my daughter when she came up to me with the toy catalogue and was showing me what she wants!
i came up with he idea of having her cut out the pictures of what she wants and sticking them on a big piece of paper creating her own "christmas wish list"
What do you think of this?
Also can you suggest any other ideas?

Answer
I think that's a great idea, but you should plan to do some other things, so she doesn't get the idea that Christmas is only about gifts for her. Also, make sure she knows that Santa doesn't always bring everything. You don't want her to be disappointed on Christmas morning because she thought she'd get everything she asked for.

You can make gifts for beloved friends and relatives with squares of unbleached muslin, a plain wooden embroidery hoop, and some fabric paint. Stretch the muslin into the hoop and paint her hand with the paint. Make a hand print. Let it dry, and you can use a fabric marker to write anything you want-like "Christmas 2010 Jennifer", or whatever. thread some narrow ribbon through the fastener on the hoop so it can be hung up on the wall or a tree. If you want to get fancy, you can sew lace on the edges of the muslin.

Remember shrinky dinks? You can buy the plastic at a craft store. Have your child help you trace a Christmas shape (cookie cutters are good for this) and then fill it in with the markers. You would cut it out and bake it. Make sure to punch a hole in it, so it can be hung.

You can cut out cardboard shapes that your child can paint. Paste a picture of your child in the middle and surround with little pine cones or other decorative shapes (buttons, scraps) that she can help you glue on. This can also be hung

Cut out the separate parts of the egg carton. Paint and pull a ribbon or pipe cleaner through to hang on a tree to look like a bell. (I still have some of these from when one of my children was little)

And even though she's little, you can have her help you mix when you're baking. She can also help decorate cookies.

Have a great time with your daughter on the holidays. Consult you library for more ideas.

What is a good gift to get for a 1 year old girl for christmas?

Brittany H

I am going christmas shopping tomorrow, and I am very clueless what i should get for this little girl. It is so hard to shop for children under 3. Any suggestions?

Answer
One year olds can walk, so push along or pull along toys are great. Ball.

They are learning to use objects for a purpose and like to copy what people do, so...
toy telephone, very simple jigsaws, a small bag to put things in and take things out of, stacking toys, blocks, toddler musical instruments...
Anything with buttons to press, levers to flick

story books (can be nice to get a book to hold and chew but then also a nice one for the book shelf to keep until older),

paints/baby paint apron

Happy shopping x

Baby's first x-mas....used toys?

AUDREY H

It is my baby girl's first christmas (6 mos) and being my first child I quickly realized how EXPENSIVE and UNUSED so much of the stuff is. I shop often on craigslist for baby stuff, but would it be too bad to buy my baby toys from there for her x-mas gifts? Is that just really cheap? I just figure she will grow out of using most of the toys within months.... she will then need toys for toddlers ...etc..
Im not buying anyone elses gifts used b/c obviously they will get more use out of it...I guess that is why I feel guilty

Answer
Hi. I'm going to be honest with you, I wished I would have thought of this for my daughter's first Christmas...lol. There is nothing wrong with buying used toys for Christmas. My daughter was 8 months on her first Christmas...she is 2 1/2 now. On her first Christmas, I went a little overboard on the gift buying. I just thought I had to buy her all this stuff because it was her first Christmas. Well, she was more interested in the wrapping paper...lol. I have pictures took of her sitting on top of the wrapping paper with all the toys throwed to the side...she was having a good time playing in that paper. So, you are being very smart. Save that money for something else. Kids out grow toys and clothes so quickly, I learned my lesson.

Baby's 1st Birthday- a few questions?

Mrs. Kelly

Hi! My baby is turning 1 early November. I never thought I'd have a first birthday party for her- just dad, mom, grandmas and grandpas... BUT now I am just so excited and we have many friends with babies, so I'm going to do one.
1. How much is too much? (guest-wise. I'm thinking there might be 12 kids under the age of 5 there, plus their parent of course. Is this too over the top? My house is small!)
2. I want a tasty but HEALTHY birthday cake. If that exists. I'm thinking of making a carrot cake. What do you think?
3. I'm not going to do a theme... just a lot of balloons. Any ideas on what else could "go on" at the party?
THANKS!

Answer
You can do whatever you want, just be sensitive to the age of the kids there. Make sure it is not during nap times and that the cake will not destroy a meal. I wouldnt worry about activities. These are very small children so just get a lot of toys out and let everyone play together (the balloons will be a hit) while parents get to chat.
I guess carrot cake is as healthy as it gets, cake wise. My only suggestion would be to make some cupcakes either instead or as well. They are just easier to serve and clean up, especially when small children are involved.
Take lots of pictures and have fun!

Outdoor toys for kids?

Emily

I have some nephews that NEVER go outside. They live in an apartment with a small yard but their mother doesn't take them out. What can I get them for Xmas that will get them to stop worshipping the TV? They are 4,5, and 7 years old

Answer
Best outside toy in the world is a cardboard box. Yes, a furniture or washer and dryer box , refrigerator etc. All furniture stores will throw these out everyday. Grab a box of cheap crayons or markers. and there ya go. Hours and hours and hours of fun.

What's better than a huge box? Two huge boxes!

They can pretend it's a ufo , spaceship, train, clubhouse, castle , fort, a cave , etc. The possibilities are endless and it's free, aside from the crayons.

It is My Baby Cousin Sophia's 1st b-day on Saturday. Any Gift Ideas? Clothes are probably something that you would think of with common Sense..But Still Do You Know if there are Any really little kid games or toys out?..She Loves Toys..Such as Stuffed animals(When they sing or talk) or anything that she can play with that makes noise.

Answer
Books, books, and more books! I cannot emphasize enough how important I think it is that you take my advice to heart. In a world of so many negative influences, I beg you to consider buying your cousin something other than toys. Besides, at her age almost anything can be a toy. In my opinion you can't have enough books. I firmly believe that if you buy her a toy you'll be wasting your money on something she will outgrow in months if not years or tire of in weeks if not days (after all, your cousin is turning one). I heartily advise you to invest your money in something that (when used daily) can benefit your cousin for the rest of her life. I recognize you're probably looking for toy ideas and that's why you posted your question in this forum, but think about the impact books can have on your dear cousin's life. Think of the special opportunity you have to influence her early learning and foster her emergent reading skills. Imagine yourself and her parents reading to her (at all times, not just bedtime) and the joyful moments you all can have as a family, building the bonds of love and trust and establishing a foundation for her future. A book can be an everlasting gift and you can inscribe a special message within it, creating a lasting memory for your cousin and her parents. I still have books that my aunt and uncle gave me when I was a child, and when I reread these books as an adult I loved rediscovering the inscriptions they wrote inside. The single best way to help a child become a reader (for life) is to read to her. You can help her get an early start by providing her with great children's literature. While it's clearly her parent's responsibility to help her become a reader, they may not encourage this behavior enough. Here's where you can make a huge difference. By establishing that you value reading and books you're encouraging her to value the same. At this age in particular, I advise you to look for books that rhyme or have a rhythmic pattern. Pop-up books, board books, and lift the flap books are especially attractive to one-year-old children (I've included some below). There are thousands of books that you might choose for her, but let me recommend a few:

"The Long-Nosed Pig" by Keith Faulkner; ill. by Jonathan Lambert

"The Wide-Mouthed Frog" by Keith Faulkner; ill. by Jonathan Lambert

"Shark in the Park" by Nick Sharrat

"Bark, George" by Jules Feiffer

"T is for Terrible" by Peter McCarty

"Some Dogs Do" by Jez Alborough

"Duck in the Truck" by Jez Alborough

"Where's My Teddy?" by Jez Alborough

"Louella Mae, She's Run Away" by Karen Beaumont Alarcón; ill. by Rosanne Litzinger

"The Wolf's Chicken Stew" by Keiko Kasza

"Knuffle Bunny" by Mo Willems

"Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus" by Mo Willems

"Sheep in a Jeep" by Nancy Shaw; ill. by Margot Apple

"Caps for Sale" by Esphyr Slobodkina

"Freight Train" by Donald Crews

"Fish Eyes: A Book You Can Count On" by Lois Ehlert (check out the many other wonderful titles she's written)

"Harold and the Purple Crayon" by Crockett Johnson

"Madeline" by Ludwig Bemelmans

"Millions of Cats" by Wanda Gag

"How Loud Is a Lion?" by Stella Blackstone; ill. by Clare Beaton

"The Napping House" by Audrey Wood; ill. by Don Wood

"Rosie's Walk" by Pat Hutchins

"Where's Spot?" by Eric Hill

"The Very Busy Spider" by Eric Carle

"The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle

"Clickety Clack" by Robert & Amy Spence; ill. by Margaret Spengler (Wonderfully rhythmic!)

"Jamberry" by Bruce Degen

"One Red Dot" by David A. Carter

"Blue 2" by David A. Carter

"Arrowville" by Geefwee Bodoe

"Duck on a Bike" by David Shannon

"No, David!" by David Shannon (he's written several other books starring David)

"How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?" by Jany Yolen; ill. by Mark Teague

"How Do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon?" by Jany Yolen; ill. by Mark Teague

"How Does a Dinosaur Eat His Food?" by Jany Yolen; ill. by Mark Teague

"Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak

"Mockingbird" by Allan Ahlberg

"The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds

"Corduroy" by Don Freeman

"The Spider and the Fly" by Mary Howitt; ill. by Tony DiTerlizzi

"Imogene's Antlers" by David Small

"Un Gato y un Perro" by Clare Masurel

"Bear Snores On" by Karma Wilson; ill. by Jane Chapman (they've written three other Bear books)

"Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs!" by Sandra Boynton (you can't go wrong with this author--she's written scores of books for tots)

"Banana Moon" by Janet Marshall

I've read the above stories scores of times to varied audiences with great success. Click on my profile and e-mail me. I would be happy to correspond with you and make further suggestions. I'd encourage you to check out the above titles from your local library before you buy any books. While you're there, talk to the children's librarians and ask them for their recommendations, too. I'd also suggest you to find a copy of Jim Trelease's "The Read Aloud Handbook" (see link below). It's an invaluable resource for parents, teachers and thoughtful relatives. Another good source of information is "Parent's Guide to the Best Books for Children," published by The New York Times and edited by Eden Ross Lipson.

Are you going to give anything this holiday season?

lovetotalk

(I don't mean giving to your family. )

This holiday season are you going to donate toys, food, time, money to any groups/charities/food banks? Do you even care? Or just as broke as the next guy?

*me? Donated toys to a group and give what i can to the bell ringers even though i can't afford it, but it's worth it for someone else to get. I don't have kids and can eat top raman for a few days if it's gonna make someone else have a better holiday.

Answer

Good toys for a 4.5 year old girl?

Captain

I like to Christmas shop early. I'm looking to get her something that she can play with and stay entertained with by herself since she is an only child. It seems like everything she has doesn't keep her busy for very long. She loves the following items she has:

Crayons/finger paints/water paints/markers/coloring books
Dressup shoes and clothes
Babies and more babies
Kitchen
Fisher Price ixl (handheld game)
magnets (she has a few dif. sets that are dif shapes)
Disney movies
books

I've tried getting her into legos or lincoln logs or some type of building blocks but she has never really gotten into that. If you have any ideas I would appreciate it. Thanks!
I forgot to mention, she has a decent amount of outdoor toys and we really don't need to add to the collection unless it is really going to wow her. She has an ATV, scooter, tricycle, bicycle, tent and tunnel set, and a very large pool.

Answer
A Sit N Spin back when I was a kid you'd sit down on it in spin yourself around and around and around I would get a little dizzy for a minute then I get right back on kept me busy for quit

I got another 1 but can't remember the name it was a big giant ball with the handle on the top you would sit on the ball and hold on the handle and jump and and bounce around the house. Good luck

Top Christmas Presents!?

asantafe20

I'm brainstorming some ideas on what to get my kids for Christmas & their birthdays - my daughter will be 5, December 30th, and my son will be 3 December 3rd.

Any good ideas will be helpful! They're really into the arts and craftsy things!! :)

And if anyone knows what the top toys are for 2007 - would be much appreciated. ;)

thanks
why not china?

Answer
I have a 2 year old son...4 words...Thomas The Tank Engine. As for the 5 year old...Dora is in, although I don't really care for her. Stick to the toys that last awhile...Little Tikes, Step2...maybe for the 5 year old an indoor gardening kit she can take care of this winter when we are all stuck inside?
