what can I do to keep a toddler occupied on an airplane and make the trip easy?

Answer
Do you have a separate seat for each of you, or are you planning on having a "lap baby"? Definitely bring the toddler's carseat on board; you will want the convenience of being able to keep the child in its seat! It is WELL worth the hassle of having to lug it around and carry it on the plane, get it installed, etc. Plus the crew can and should help you get it to your seat, and back off the plane when you land. Ideally the baby should have its own seat and carseat as well.

Bring some quiet activities along for the toddler. A few items that they are familiar with, and several that are new. Dollar stores have lots of fun stuff and you don't have to spend a lot that way. Just a bunch of things to keep the toddler occupied if they are bored or frustrated. I would bring 1 toy/activity per 30 min. of flight time, and an extra one or two in case of delays.

Bring lots of snacks (more than you think you'll need-- delays can wreak havoc on little ones' tummies), and notify the airline ahead of time if your toddler has allergies or any other issues that require specific beverages (I don't know what they do if a child must have a nutrition beverage or soy milk rather than cow's, or any of that). Then you won't be surprised and unprepared when it comes to drinks. If you are planning to breastfeed your new little one, do me a favor and ask the airline when you call, if they have any restrictions on bringing lactating breasts on board now with all of their no-liquids policies... LOL

Another thing-- expect that at some point your toddler, your baby, or both, are going to be unhappy while on the plane. Try not to stress over whether this is bothering the other passengers, and just focus on meeting your childrens' needs. You're not responsible for the comfort of the rest of the plane, only for your own two precious passengers! And you paid for your seats, just like the rest of them.

Good luck! Flying with children doesn't have to be a huge issue; it can even be an enjoyable experience! I've flown with my kiddos many times, at different ages and stages, and with up to 5 children, plus dog & cat, with no hubby to help (he's military) on some occasions. Some have been negative experiences, but most have been wonderful. And the negative ones were only because of unforeseeable problems (getting sick just before the flight, or just me letting myself get stressed over kids being kids). I hope it all goes well!

Can someone suggest small toys for a 16 month old to use on a plane trip?

LOVE

We have a 14.5 hour flight to Tokyo and I know that I will need lots of entertainment for my little man.. Of course I can't bring big toys, but does anyone have ideas for small toys that I can bring on board?
P.S. My baby is a boy..

Answer
This is a tough age!

I was a Flight Attendant for 13 years and whenever we saw a toddler come onboard, we knew it could get tricky. After 10 years of working on airplanes, I then found myself one of those mothers. I fly, usually alone, with my three children between Europe and California about twice a year, starting when each was 4 months old.

Not to scare you but the hardest trips for me were when mine were this age. They don't like to be confined. You can't really reason or negotiate too well with them ("If you stay seated now...") I had one 11 1/2 hour flight when my son slept all of 20 minutes. Get a good nights' sleep yourself before leaving!

For entertainment, what does he like to play with at home? Probably tons of toys which are big and noisy! My trick was to bring new things. It worked for my mom when I flew as a toddler and I did it with my own kids.

Remember that it only needs to be new to them. Some moms get creative with second hand toys. Have several and pull them out as the flight goes on. My son especially liked things he could take apart and open up. He loved anything with wheels and those cheap plastic animals kept him busy for ages. Buy a whole container of them and divide them up in small bags. Keep pulling out the bags as the hours go by. If you lose one or two, it's no great tragedy.

Books are good, especially those with chunky pages. Coloring pads, magnadoodle pads worked well. Please don't get into drawing things for him. My mistake! I once drew cats all the way across the Atlantic (or at least felt like I had...)

Whether to bring a portable DVD player is up to you. Is he a big "screen watcher"? I only had one of those. The other two had the attention spans of knats so I never bothered. Will he wear the headphones? Perhaps practice at home first. What about watching the imagines without the sound? I never brought one but other moms swear by them. He seems a bit young but by all means, do what you think will work.

I do hope you have a seat for him. I suggest you bring his carseat and use it onboard. Check to make sure it's FAA certified if you're flying a U.S. carrier. Here's a site that explains more;
http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/

If not, check with your airline and/or aviation authority of the the airline's nationality. Huge variations of rules regarding car seats onboard.

He'll probably be more comfortable in his familar seat and he's much safer than in your lap. Having said that, commercial air travel in the industrialized world is very safe and there's very little chance of anything happening. You'll be grateful to have the extra space and be able to put him down when asleep.

Try to book "bulkhead" seats. These are the ones with the wall in front. They are located throughout the cabin. This will give you more freedom to get in and out of your seats and prevent him kicking the seat in front of him. Toddlers are good at this! Unfortunately, you can't sit in exit rows with a child.

He'll want to move so try to do that when there isn't a meal service (or those pesky duty free carts) in the aisle. All the carts are super-heavy and the perfect height to hide a toddler. Keep an eye on him at all times.

If turbulence hits while you're up and about, don't go back to your seats unless it's steady enough to make it safely. Sit on the floor if you have to, one hand to hold on and the other around him.

A great tip I got from a cousin and used myself is to learn to change them standing up. The changing tables in airplanes are small and at this age, they hate to lie down in strange places. Practice at home and then you can use the bigger handicapped lavs instead of trying to cram both of you in the little ones. Keep him away from the emergency button. They are attracted to the red color and love to press it.

A few years ago I wrote an article for a local newsletter. I later expanded it and put it on a blog to share with other parents. Many of them in turn, gave me some more great tips. It's totally non-commercial so feel free to visit;
http://flyingwithchildren.blogspot.com

I go more into packing, getting that car seat through the airport and feeding tips. Information from someone who actually worked in the industry!

Have a great trip to a very child-friendly country!

What's teen life like in England?

top 10 kids toys uk image

Bow

I might be possibly moving there in a years time, and I need to know the basics.
I'd be moving with my Dad, my younger brother and sister. I'm 14. Girl. Canadiaan, but I have a dual citizenship to the UK. I'm a muay thai fighter.
Are there boxing gyms in England?
What's school like? Hard, easy, events that happen, and what happens on holidays and weekends during school?
Will I end up picking up an accent and the slang quickly?
What's the tube like? Is it easy to figure out?
What is a common thing for friends to do?
What would my first bit of school be like since I'd be new there?
When do people start drinking? Dating?
When is it normal for teens to start traveling by themselves? (a trip with friends)
Do people drive or take transit more?
Do I have to get a transit card thing?
What sports would I end up doing?
Would I be more liked or disliked right away because I'm new and Canadian?
How big is the typical bedroom in England?
When do teens typically start working?
When do teens move out usually into their own flat or house?
What do the girls typically act like? The guys?
Things you do in England but not Canada that I wouldn't be familiar with?
Any other info or knowledge would be amazing :)

www.dear-harley.tumblr.com is my Tumblr if you want any more info on me! Thanks so much!

Answer
I'll be 20 soon and I have lived in England my whole life.

1. There are a lot of boxing gyms in England. In general we have lots of gyms here and the majority of gyms are amazing with top class machines and swimming pools. It does depend on the price but basically for what you want, so you pay for quality, but really it's not too bad. Tip: as you are a student a lot of gyms will give you a discount rate and you will only have to pay student fares

2. School in England is okay. We have different levels in schooling and we don't have advanced classes but people can take classes earlier if teachers think you are good enough and it does your boost your chances of getting into a good university and we have some of the best universities in the world. We have GCSEs which you will mostly take, then IB, or A-Levels or BTECs which you take during junior and senior year of high school. We don't have that many events like you do in Canada and America - for example we don't have many cheerleaders, spirit week or home coming but sweet 16 and prom is very popular. Schools do things differently but you have sports day, dances and fund raising events. I do wish there was more though, & you have uniforms up to junior year

3. Seeing as you are 14 I doubt very much you will get an English accent as you have a Canadian accent and people are born with their accents. My aunt whom is American has lived in England for over 50 years and she has her strong American accent and you can tell she is American. Still you don't need an English accent to fit in and Canadian accents are awesome.

4. I LOVE taking the tube, and I always take it whenever I am in London and I also love the trains and the buses. The tubes are comfortable, run on time, there's tubes every minute, there are loads of maps, everything is explained clearly and simply and above off all there are staff at every corner to help you. If you're going to take the train then prepare for delays - there are constant delays which is a nightmare and the buses run well but there's loads of traffic during rush hour

5. Going out, having fun, going to the movies, shopping, eating out, going to fares, parties and the park. There's lots to do and life here in England is no different to your life in Canada and is nothing like skins (t.v show)

6. You will be shown around and you will start classes. You'll be assigned to a student who will take you under their wing and will show you around and help you around.

7. The drinking age in England is 16 but a lot of people start drinking when they are younger. It is known that people in England, especially teenagers drink a lot and cannot handle their drink - they drink until they throw up and faint, and that is not a good state to be in. I don't drink and I have a lot of friends. Dating, I would say 13+

8. I would say around 14+ but it does depend where you go. I would say always go with friends, always have money and your phone with you and above off all don't go anywhere which you are not familiar with.

9. I would say public transport is the most common way people travel because we have a good, safe and reliable transport system. We don't have school buses here unless you go to a highly prestigious private school, but at university we have university buses.

10. If you live London then you get a student card and up to the age of 18 the bus is free, but the tube & train is half price. If you're studying at university in London then it's 25% off on everything only if you're studying a full time course like medicine

11. Football is highly common, rounders, swimming, netball, ext! Lots of different sports and depends on your school and you can join sports outside of school

12. No, everybody will be in awe with you. It's always like that with the new kids - they're always the new shiny toy, but as you're Canadian people will be around you more.

13. Be prepared for this. Houses in England are mainly attached to one another and the rooms are not big at all - however if you don't live in a city and you are rich then you will have a big house. Canada is massive hence why you have big houses

14. 16 is when you can start working. There are lots of jobs in London and large cities but with the economic situation and recession work is tough to find, so apply and keep applying & don't give up.

15. Normally teens go to university and a lot go and live on campus for 1 year and then rent a house or flat with their friends. Afterwards some move back home or live on their own.

16. I wouldn't say English girls and boys are different from other teenagers in the world, apart from the accent. The only thing we have here is chavs - look up chav on the internet and you don't want to mix with them at all

17. England is not that different at all to Canada. You're going to love it here. good luck xoxo

Teens: Ever Had Trouble With Gypsy's?

The KiD =R

(I don’t know if there are Gypsy’s in the America so this mostly for people in the UK but if they do live in America aswell feel free to answer)

Last summer I was walking down a canal near my house with my little 6-year-old cousin who was visiting. To get to the canal you have to pass a gypsy camp (from which they haven't moved for 5 years) and as we approached it I could see about 7 or 8 gypsies who looked about 10 to 17 years old you could hear they had a motor bike and it then came speeding down the road and there was a kid about 13 years old on it and I thought he was just going to go past us which he did but then he turned round and went speeding up and tried to run over my little cousins legs I had to lift him away to stop him from getting run over. I then told him to fcuk off or I would knock him out and he laughed and sped off to the others we carried on walking and then they surrounded us as we tried to get past and started calling us all the names under the moon(including a pikey which I thought was a name for Gypsy's) then my little cousin started to get scared and began to cry one of the gypsy boys then tried to pull my cousin from me until I told him he was gypsy scum they told me if I ever called then that again they would put me in hospital I had the urge to smack him in the face and put all of them in hospital but I didn't fancy my chances against 8 of them. They let us through while shouting abuse at us. As I picked my cousin up and walked away I noticed that there were about 5 gypsy adults sitting on a bench watching the whole incident and laughing about it that really made my blood boil and if I wasn't with my cousin I would have went and smashed them. After we got away we went home with my crying cousin and told my parents who just warned me to stay away from the gypsy’s, which I did.

Until about 6 months ago when I was out on a jog and decided to run along the canal and then as I passed the gypsy camp there were these boys from about 8 to 12 who were all manky and had there tops off and were toy fighting (which still looked violent) and I am 16 years old but they still abused me and threw a stone at me as i ran.

I went for a run yesterday aswell and I got the same abuse this time from a bunch of girls between 13 and 16 who called me all the names under the sun this time I had had enough so I stopped and warned them to shut the fcuk up or I would make them and then the adults who had been watching told me never to give there children cheek again so I got even more pi$$ed and spat in his face and ran like hell back home before they could all catch up with me.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I always hear how Gypsy's are victimized and that they are nice people but every time I have encountered them teenagers and children have abused me while the adults watched and laughed all for being a non-gypsy. So if it were up to me I would evict every gypsy from the land and force them to pay tax like the rest off us.

Have any of you had any trouble with Gypsy's or is it just a bad infestation that is in my area.
.

Answer
First of all it's GYPSIES.

Secondly, I come from Poland and yes, we have heaps of the bad type of gypsies there. Unfortunately they have been kicked around by life since WW2... They steal etc.

Remember that Romanians are not always gypsies so don't judge them.

But yeah, I'd watch out for gypsies... not good stuff. I love their culture/style, but their manners disgust me.

Do you HAVE to convert a room into a nursery for your child while they're an infant?

Or can it wait until they're a mobile toddler? Can we keep the cradle in the study (it's not like the baby will notice or care about decorations) until we have time to turn it into a room for him/her?
It's a money thing, too.

Answer
ABSOLUTELY! Though its probably easier to keep the cradle in your room if you breastfeed.

Heck my son is 18 months and "his" room is STILL moss green and STILL has guitars hanging on the walls (make a pretty nice nursery decoration I highly recommend it).

Actually until they are able to get out of the crib there isn't much need to baby-proof their room. You will likely spend all the awake hours in the livingroom and most of the toys will hang out there ;)

Has anyone been an emergency foster parent?

Aimee's Mo

I live in Oregon and my husband and I want to become emergency foster parents for babies and toddlers. First I am wondering if anyone has done this and has advice for us. Second, do I have to have all the equipment (crib, diapers, etc.) needed to care for a baby before I can start fostering? Or does the state provide that, or do the kids bring their things with them.

Answer
My best friend is one here in canada
When I had my 4th baby we stayed with her for a bit (my spouse was away on tour- army life blech) so I got to see it firsthand

Tina (not real name) is equipped to care for 6 children, she prefers them to be school aged. She has 5 bedrooms all set up and ready 2 are for boys, 2 are for girls.. one is green for either. She has a variety of toys & clothes all ready to go at any time. She must always keep her cupboards full to the extreme as she never knows from one day to the next how many kids she'll have.

One night while I was there around 11:30 pm she received a phone call from a social worker, they were going in to apprehend 4 children and would be over in approx 30 minutes.

Those poor babies showed up, dressed in dirty gross clothes, it was pretty obvious they hadnt seen a bath in awhile. Our first concern given the time was to get them settled into bed. Then it came out they were hungry... we got them talking a little. Two of the boys had shared a muffin in the am, the other 2 hadnt eaten at all that day. We got them fed & into bed, luckily finally having full bellies they slept.

The next day was hell. 3 of the kids were well behaved given the circumstances, one wasn't... she was 8 yrs old, yet had typical behaviour for a 3 yr old. She dumped a full pack of flour on the flour, pushed my son into a wading pool, picked on everyone, acted out in every way possible.

When the social worker came that day, we got to hear the kids background. Mom was a single mother they had found passed out drunk while the kids were throwing beer bottles at passing cars from their third story apt window.

It was a heart breaking story, I'm sorry for the long post, but I think it's important for anyone considering this to know exactly what they're getting into

PS when those 4 kids arrived, they came with nothing. no clothes, not a beloved stuffed animal...nothing at all

We have 3 kids (8,8,5) and a 13 year old.

Answer
You could have a cocker spaniel or springer spaniel, they are both really energetic, fun and easy to train. My dad's friend has a Cocker spaniel and it is so adorable and very well behaved! I don't know if they shed or not, but very little if they do. These dogs will be amazing family pets, I can assure you!

I know these are a bit bigger, but I have a Labrador and he is the best dog ever. He puts up with me cuddling and kissing him, haha! He also wants to play with me all the time and loves chewing his rubber toys. And he is very cute! I would rate these dogs as no.1 on a family pets list. :)

You could have a labradoodle as they are also very friendly and cute! They also don't shed because they have the poodle gene. Or a cockerdoodle, my neighbour has one and he is so cute and well behaved! :)

All of these dogs are very family friendly and will give you lots of love, fun and they will cheer you up when you are feeling a bit blue. :)
They are also very energetic as my Labrador loves playing in the garden chasing after footballs!

Good luck! :)

How to stop kids from smashing pumpkins?

I have a pumpkin patch in my backyard an when some kids get out of school they come right to my backyard and either try and steal the pumpkins or smash them. I need some clever ideas.

Answer
I'd collect the pumpkin bits and heave them into the the kids' yards or by the front door with a note: ......Your kids think trespassing into my yard entitles them to destroy my garden for fun. If they need toys so badly, here are the pumpkins they have been having fun with.

What advice would you give to a new mum about raising kids?

Arlette

What advice would you give to a new mum about raising kids that you wish someone had told you? My babys due on Christmas Day!

Answer
1. You won't need half the crap that you bring to the hospital with you. And it will be a pain in the butt to carry it all home.
2. There are tons of stupid baby gadgets out there. Don't get suckered into things like baby wipes warmers, knee-pads for crawlers, etc.
3. It will be much harder than you ever expected, and so much more rewarding than you ever expected.
4. Let your partner help. Insist that your partner helps.
5. Even with a newborn, you need time alone. Give the baby to your partner, a grandparent, anything, and get out of the house for an hour, ALONE! Get a pedicure, buy a book, or just go grocery shopping by yourself, at least once a month.

My cat is spayed and brings in the kids small toys every night and she cries. She had a litter about 6 months ago and she started doing this about 2 weeks ago. Im guessing its because she is missing her babies.. Any ideas of what it could be or how to treat the problem?

Answer
i'm glad to see someone who's responsible enough to get their cat fixed! i'm assuming the kittens have been gone now for 3-4 months or so? she really probably isn't missing them much - cats have a very short memory when it comes to litters. more likely, she is showing you her catch of the day. just because she's spayed, her hunting instincts are still in place.

my neutered cats do this as well, both male and female. they act like a peacock when i see what they've brought me every night. it's usually one of their feathered cat toys, but sometimes it's my daughter's stuffed animals or a hair tie or paper. it varies by cat and day, but a quick ackowledgement usually quiets them down for a while.

What is something fun I could do with a 21 month and a 6 month?

Amber B

I am just trying to think of things to do with the two of them and nothing is coming to mind. I know that my 6 month old is still very young but there has to be something because my oldest is at the age where she just wants to do things. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Answer
Is it warm where you are? Go to a park, the 21 month old will love it, and the 6 month old will enjoy being outside. Pack a picnic, bring a big blanket. Lay it out, bring a few toys for your 6 month old and play on there with them and let your 21 month old have a ball on the slide and other things. Then eat your picnic.
Make a habit out of it once a week.

At my library they have story time, where a women comes in and does a puppet show with books or other interesting things. And then afterwards you can let your 21 month old pick out a special book and you can as well. ITs targeted at young children. I used to take my son to this last summer and he was only 4-7 months old, he enjoyed being out and looking around at the kids. You could go each week on this day as well.

I'm writing a book and the main character walks into her brother's room to find him playing. I'm a '90s baby, so I wouldn't know what types of toys kids played with in the '60s. I was thinking Star Wars, but I did research and it said Star Wars first aired around 1977.

Answer
Since I was a 6 YO boy in 1966, I can tell you that my favorite toys were my Tonka Trucks, especially the big fire engine, and my Tinker Toys and Lincoln Logs. It was great fun to build stuff then knock it all down with the trucks.

What toys should I buy now to put away for my kids in the future to make some money with?

Small Busi

I want to start buying toys, comics, etc now and keep them in the box and put away so when my kids are older they have some vintage toys that are worth something. So how do I know what type of toys, comics, etc that I should invest in now to put away for future investments?

If anybody has any idea what toy companies, toys, comics, etc will one day be worth something if kept in good mint condition in a sealed box please let me know

Any info would be appreciated

Thanks

Answer
- cards (such as yu-gi-oh, magic the gathering and pokemon) are usually worth a lot in the future if preserved in mint condition. ofc, most of these can only be obtainable through boosters and there isn't 100% chance that you'd be able to get a really rare card but you could get magazine exclusives (shonen jump magazines send promo cards if you subscribe to them)

- high-end figurines and toys, such as some transformer toys, as they go out of production over time, as well as online exclusives because they also only sell for a limited time, so once they become hard to obtain you could easily sell at collector's price on ebay etc. which is usually 2-3x more pricy than the rp.

- pretty much any online exclusive toy

- comics could be invested in but since its quite hard to tell which comics would be hard to obtain in the future its also quite hard to pick out the right ones. you could buy the entire collection and later on sell as a bulk if your willing to spend extra money, but the more recent comics would be less expensive than comics made 10-20 years ago.

Q. Im 13 and am visiting Disneyland, Anheim for the first time in early May, 2011. We will be there probably from just after open to just beofre close. I was just wondering in your opinion what are the best rides, shows and attractions there? And is California Park good?

Thank you for all your answers!

Answer
if you like fast rides forsure go on space mountain, it is sooo much fun one of the bests.
thunder mountain is one of my favorite rides as well. (its a rollercoaster type ride) and the log ride.
alot of people like the madderhorn, not one of my favorites. its really crazy like whip lash , super short and long lines. and always seems to break down.

for attraction type rides pirates of the carribean, the haunted mansion, indian jones, jungle cruise, the finding nemo ride, space tours are all really cool.

for little kiddy rides, the alice and wounderland ride is one of my favs. also winnie the pooh ride, peter pan, story book land are all really good too. I cant think of alot of little kid ones cause I dont really go on them, but if you think of your favorite disney movie Im sure they have a ride for it.

also they have this really cool thing my the space mountain ride thats called disney inventions or something its a attraction thats in the big spinny building anyway its like this super amazing future house thats totally coool and has all these other cool future things. definatly go in that !!!

In my opinion I like california adventure alot more than disney, its alot less "kiddy"
its really cool because they have different parts of it and each part is a different part of california.
they have "paradise pier" which is like totally southern california beachy type area which is awsome and they have a couple roller coasters and arcade games and stuff
they also have like a northern california area thats more woods like that has the bear rapids which is super fun but prepar to get soaked ! and they have hiking trails over in that part too.
then they have a plane area which has a ride called soaring over california which you HAVE to go on its so coool, it feels like you or soarung over california.

I've got dirty dishes piled up in the kitchen, laundry to be folded on the couch, dirty laundry to be washed, kids toys (3 yr old and 18 month) scattered through out the house, floors need mopping... and i'm sitting here feeling like crying because i'm worrying about other things like money, moving country and my weight... I know I just need to just do it but I don't know where to start... how can I get motivated?

Answer
i feel your pain!!! im a mother of three ages 8,3, and 1. i work four days a week and my hubby is ALWAYS working. hes a neat freak and is usually making comments about the house and usually i dont care. i clean as much as i can when i have the time or energy during the day. then after the kids are asleep i sit and relax for about an hour then i do dishes or whatever needs to be done. fold the luandry as u sit on the couch. grab a "toy box" and load all the kids toys at once. you dont need to do it all at once!! once you see the results youll feel better i always do!! good luck and dont worry.....with kids your house will always be a mess

What are some gret toys for a almost 18 month old?

Amber j

what are some big toys for a almost 18 month old
She has ALOT small toys and she has a lot of musical toys. The only real big toy is a sit, and bounce turtle. Anything? Thanks!

Answer
She needs a push and ride toy.

That is really important and a huge hit for an 18 month old, and they can also keep riding it at age 2. Get one that makes sounds. We have a spiderman truck, but for girls there is a little mermaid one I see a lot. They can press and pull on a lot of things to make noise. There are other models, but that one is a really big hit with kids.

There are lots of other toys to get, simple puzzles, blocks, stacking rings, shape sorters (a really good one) a magnetic board and gears / letters and numbers, basic art supplies, cars, trucks, trains, dolls, stuffed animals.

i need to know if there is an extra fee for anything once you are inside and already paid for your tickets. like are there any shows, exhibits, or anything else that requires an additional fee other than what your standard ticket pays for? also how is it for adults? is it entertaining for us as well? or is it more of a kid thing? what is your overall rating for adult ''entertainment''? because me and my husband are planing on going with our little one.

Answer
Hi there! COSI admission includes all of the exhibits except for Adventure and does not include movies on the Extreme Screen. We have ten permanent exhibits, live shows on the Gadgets stage live shows like Rat Basketball and the Electrostatic Generator that are all included in your admission. COSI is great for all ages with lots of science learning going on all over the building. Sometimes we will have traveling exhibitions which require an extra fee but the next one we have won't be until Fall 2012. Hope you enjoy your trip!

What are some good ideas to keep my kids occupied during our LONG amtrak train ride?

best kids toys under $10

best kids toys under $10 image

It's just

all 3 kids are under 10; my "organizational" panic is starting to set in for me and I need to have this trip planned right this time. Please help, thanks.

Answer
While Pasky is right, there are lots of portable electronics to entertain your kids with, you could also bring other things that won't cost that much.

Books or magazines are a good way to keep them occupied if they can and like to read, if they cannot you could also read to them.

Playing cards can also keep them busy. If the train that you're going on doesn't have a surface to put the cards on, you could bring a tray to use as your 'table.'

Small toys/dolls and what not are good as well.

Depending on how long it is, and what time the train ride is, you could bring a soft pillow and blanket for each child and have a nap time on the train- this is a great way to keep them from bothering other passengers. If you have a daytime train ride and it won't be a regular sleep time for them, you could probably wake them up a few hours earlier than usual or send them off to be a few hours later.

Depending on the age, coloring and activity books are also time-consuming, and with older kids you could give them puzzle books such as crosswords. Under the age of ten, though, you should be able to find something to keep them busy.

And electronics are always a way to go- DVD players, a notebook with computer games, portable game systems, iPods, etc....

Good luck!

Is it safe for small dogs and children to be around and inhaling drywall dust?

~Paynt~

I have 2 toy dogs and 3 kids all under 10 we are sanding our drywall is it safe to have them in the house...it is poorly ventilated too

Answer
No it is not safe. When you work with drywall you have to use a mask for you and to keep the place very well ventilated. Also use a vacuum cleaner attachment - you can rent one.

I am looking for toys for my soon to be 2 year old twins. They don' t play with very many things and I was wondering if any mom's or dad's have any suggestions.
Sorry - they are b/g twins. I should have said that.

Answer
Well, I'll write this for both boys & girls...and assume they share. All of these are really fun and have occupied my kids or my friend's kids for a while.

Wheely Bugs - These are adorable soft ride on toys. They are a huge hit with kids 2+ years old. Gender neutral ones are the bee and cow.

Busy Go & Grow Giraffe - Another ride on toy that is a great option for toddlers.
http://www.babyearth.com/playskool-busy-go-grow-giraffe.html

Monte Carlo Car - One more ride on option. This is the ultra-sporty car for a boy and the same car for a girl but it's pink with flowers.

GIRLhttp://www.babyearth.com/lc-creations-ride-on-flower-car.html

Mega Maze - My kids love to play in this and they really use their imaginations. It's great if you have room for it. Toy says for ages 3+ but smaller kids can play with it too.
http://www.babyearth.com/active-edge-mega-maze.html

Monster Bowling! This is a great toy for twins because they can take turns and play with it together. It's plush so it's pretty safe too. Kids think these little monsters are very funny.

How do you clean your babies plastic toys? Is it safe to wipe toys with clorox disinfecting wipes?

Proud Momm

or using deluted bleach? I feel like just soap and water doesn't get them clean enough because it doesn't disinfect. What ways do you clean your babies toys?

Answer
I have been a licensed child care provider in my home for 20 years. I have also overseen the toy cleaning procedures for our church's nursery, toddler, and preschool rooms. For normal home use with toys that are played with mostly by just your own child, washing with soap and rinsing well is all it takes to keep toys clean. If other children visit your home and play with your child's toys then you may want to disinfect, but if they aren't sick it really isn't necessary. For my daycare, I regularly wash most plastic toys in the top shelf of my dishwasher. Teething toys, rattles, and anything that has been in a baby's mouth goes through the dishwasher if possible. Other things are washed in warm soapy water, rinsed well and placed in a bleach water solution using 1 Tablespoon of bleach per 1 gallon of water. Let the toys soak for about 5 minutes than let air dry overnight. Bleach evaporates and there is no danger of babies ingesting it when the bleach water is thoroughly and completely dry from the toy. You can use disinfecting wipes on large surface toys such as climbing toys, chairs, and ride-on toys. Or, you can use a spray bottle that has 1 quart of water with 1 tsp. bleach in it. Either way, just let the surface dry completely before letting the baby play with the item again. I suggest you wash everything you can in your dishwasher and for other items, washing in soap and water works fine. It won't hurt to disinfect your baby's toys, but it isn't necessary with normal usage.

Is it possible to make an RC car run on magnets?

geodragon_

I know there are magnetic generators for homes and some type of engine as well...
But I was curious if it is possible for an RC car to run on magnets instead of a battery or or gasoline. I'm sure no kid/teen/adult feels like waiting for the battery to charge or buying gas for a toy, right?
Thanks if you have any ideas!

I also ask this is because it could be a great push forward from using gasoline that reeks to using a source that lasts longer and doesn't pollute.

Answer
An individual magnet does not and cannot store energy in the way energy is stored chemically in a battery or in gasoline (hydrocarbon bonds).

The closest idea to what you propose, would be to make a model of a "magnetic levitation" or mag-lev high-speed train, which is a train where the track contains a series of electromagnets, to propel the train along the track. Here's an article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maglev_(transport)

If you'd like to try making a model "maglev" train, here's an article describing how to do it:

http://amasci.com/maglev/train.html

I hope these ideas are helpful -- and keep asking good questions!

Am I wrong for kicking my son out of the house for being homosexual ?

Everette

I didn't raise him to be this way , he did not play with this girl toys as a kid I believe this is something that has just sprang up !
First of all I am his father and yes I believe he chose this behavior to try and hurt our family !

Answer
Sorry to be so blunt, but you did your son a big favor by kicking him out of the house. I can only imagine how he suffered growing up and having to keep his true nature concealed from the people who are supposed to love him the most - his family.

What makes you think he CHOSE this behavior? Have you even tried to understand the science on homosexuality? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/12/why-are-there-gay-men_n_1590501.html?utm_hp_ref=sex

You are seriously narcissistic if you think he "chose" this behavior to hurt the rest of the family. It's not about YOU!

And how would it "hurt" the family? Is your family so dysfunctional and weak that they would be "hurt" by the cruel opinions of pinheads? You seriously need to re-think what is important in your life.

The loss is yours.

Can anybody name a movie with an ending similar to this?

Where the heroes, after fighting for their survival, finally think that they're going to survive, but then hit another roadblock and realize survival is impossible. Maybe they fight, maybe they accept that their fate is inevitable, either way.

Kind of like the ending of Toy Story 3, except they don't survive. I would like to know of any movies similar to this ending.

How soon do you think it's cool to get new puppies with toddlers at home?

Scot G

We have 3 month old twin girls at home. Out last dog (incredible lab / golden mix) died about 8 months ago, and we're wondering how soon it would be safe to get a new puppy or two with our kiddies being as old as they are. We we're thinking to wait at least a year or so, but would certainly like to get a dog or two as soon as we can!

Answer
i myself would not get a puppy or 2 puppies with the kids at this young of an age to a puppy they would be cew toys puppies know no better i would wait tell they are older. i just had my son 23 days ago and a puppy in my home is far from comming been there did that with my daughter and it was hell when the baby started tocrawl the puppy was on her like flies on poo. this is your choice so take time and dont rush into it. also my thought is your have twins you have your hands full enough with them and should not add the stress of a puppy traing to your daily life.

JuneBug

My young adults/ youth group at church is having a "hollywood" themed party in about a week and a half. I have no idea what to be.
help?

(p.s. - i'm a girl... lol)

Answer
Every year, after a slew of hit, blockbuster movies, there is a surge of movie Halloween costumes. And 2010 movies provided no shortage of fun, colorful, and interesting characters to pick from. Adults and kids will both have fun choosing from all the movie inspired costumes that will be available. Here's a list of some of the biggest movies that came out this year, to help you choose what movie character you'll be this Halloween:

1. Avatar- One of the biggest movies of all time gave audiences a glimpse of the planet Pandora and its nature-loving inhabitants-the Na'vi. There will be no mistaking anyone who dresses up like one of Pandora's residents as they will be hard to miss dressed from head to toe in a bright blue color with tribal markings. Take cues from the movie and try to capture Sully's or Na'vi Princess Neytiri's look. Or be creative and invent your own unique Na'vi persona.

2. Toy Story 3- It has been about ten years since the last Toy Story movie, but the love for the story about Andy's toys-Woody, Buzz, Mr. Potato Head, Rex, and everyone else- has clearly not faded. Toy Story 3 has become the first animated movie in history to gross over a billion dollars at the box office. Suffice it to say, that there will be Toy Story movie Halloween costumes by the handful this year. Though the sequels have introduced new characters into the mix, it is the original gang that will be out in full force this Halloween.

3. Alice in Wonderland- Lewis Carroll's charming tale of a young girl was completely re-imagined in this year's Alice in Wonderland directed by Tim Burton. The technicolor sets and costumes only add to the fun of getting to dress up as some of your favorite characters. Don an orange wig and a top hat to transform into the Mad Hatter, or dress up like royalty and play the Queen of Hearts. Whatever Alice in Wonderland movie Halloween costume you choose, it will colorful and fun!

4. Twilight:Eclipse- Twilight is the phenomenon that took the world by storm. Everyone will be dying to sink their fangs into a Bella, Edward, or Jacob costume. As an added bonus, these costumes are generally low maintenance and have a shorter prep time than other more elaborate costumes. Unless, of course, you decide to go full on Wolf-Jacob, or are trying to copy Edward's hairstyle!

5. Iron Man 2- The Iron Man 2 Halloween costumes are sure to be plenty in number this year. The movie series based on a comic book follows an unconventional superhero with cool high-tech gadgets. The elaborate (and shiny) costume will definitely have people turning their heads.

6. Kick Ass- Though you might not find these costumes on too many kids, adults will get a 'kick' out of dressing up like one of the characters from the Kick Ass movie, which was inspired by a popular comic book.

7. Shrek Forever After- The Shrek movies are great for having a big and eclectic variety of characters- so choosing the right character to dress up as won't take any time at all. Shrek Forever After movie Halloween costumes will be out in full force this year due to the success of the movie this past summer.

8. Harry Potter- Since the first movie debuted in 2001, the world has had Pottermania, and people have shown time and time again that Harry Potter costumes are an absolute staple during Halloween. There is so much Harry Potter gear available you'll have no trouble putting together your costume to make you into Harry, Ron, Hermione or even Vol...He-Who-Must-Not Be-Named!

9. How To Train Your Dragon- This movie is definitely a kid favorite. How to Train Your Dragon movie Halloween costumes can be fun to make. Choose from any of the different types of dragons or dress up as a Viking!

10. Batman- OK, so the last Batman movie was released over two years ago, but this costume choice has lasting power and will still be a popular choice this Halloween season. Kids and adults both can both dress up as the Dark Knight, or one of his enemies, like The Joker.

There are so many great movie characters to choose from this Halloween. Don't forget to buy your costume early. If you wait too long, your choice might be sold out. But most importantly, have fun and be creative!
