How to get kids to listen while babysitting?

Q. I'm babysitting 2 kids (a 3 year old and 7 year old), neither of them listen to me. I try to bribe them, I talk in a stern voice, I tell them to go in a timeout (like their parents told me), but they just don't listen! I don't know what to do, I have to watch them 9 hours each day and it feels soo long!

Answer
If you tell them to go in time-out and they don't do it, then what do you do about it?

If you do nothing about it, and just let the time-out slide, then that's obviously why they don't listen to you -- if they just ignore you, then they can keep doing whatever they were doing and they don't have to go to time-out.

If you tell them to go in time-out and they don't, then you take away the toys/turn off the TV/stop whatever fun they're having, and physically escort them to the time-out location for the amount of time that their parents have specified.

Generally, the cure for not listening is consistent following-through. Don't ever allow yourself to tell them twice to do something. Tell them once, and if they don't start to comply within about 20 seconds of you saying it, then you go over there, turn off the TV or take away the toy they're playing with, and make sure they do it, while calmly saying "I said, it's time to put away the toys". Physically (gently) guiding their shoulders/hands in the direction you want them to go usually does the trick to make them believe you are serious about it getting done. Once they start to realize that you are following through on making them do it every time you ask them to do something, they will start complying the first time.

Another preventative tip for babysitting two or more kids their age is to make everything you want them to do into a competition. For example, if you want them to pick up their toys, say "Okay... who can pick up the toys the FASTEST???" or "Ok, let's see who can pick up the most toys??? Ready, set.... GO!!!".... or "Who can get their pajamas on and get back here the fastest?", etc, depending on what you want them to do. You'd be surprised at how willingly most kids will go for this.

What do I really need for the baby shower registry?

I am getting ready to my baby shower registry and I have a small two bedroom 800 Sq ft apartment. What do i really need for the baby and what can I live without. How many sets of clothes do I need to register for and which clothes. Do I need a frilly dress for a newborn? Do I really need a changing table or a changing pad or will a towel do? What size clothes should I register for? Is 30 newborn outfits enough? What is the minimum number of outfits needed? What clothes should I buy? Will a bumbo seat really help me? Do I register for a front or side swinging swing? Do I really need a bassinet? Does my kids need toys if so what? Is there a product that prevents infant roll over? I will be breastfeeding but I am going back to work after 6 weeks, how many bottles and what kind of pump do I need? Is there any additional bottle and breastfeeding supplies needed. Do I need special linens for the crib? Do I need a crib or will a pack and play work? Does the baby really need separate towels and wash cloths or can I just use mine. Do I need baby shampoo or is Dove good for us both. What do I do with the dirty diapers? Is cloth or paper better? How many cloth dapers do I need? Is there a way to make my own wipes? What about home made cloth diapers is there a pattern out there and what kind of cloth is used?

Answer
This isn't the site I found when I first did my search for what stuff I needed for a newborn but this is a good one that I found just now and I listed it as my source. Now to answer some of your questions it's better to get a baby their own towel's and wash cloth's cause a baby's skin is sensitive and have them be actual baby towels and wash cloth's (the fabric should be much softer then regular towel's and wash cloths). I plan on using nipple similar bottle tips but you can use any you want (keep in mind a baby is picky). Also your baby can end up long or smaller then expected so not wise to buy clothes early into the pregnancy. You only need crib bedding if you plan on using a crib (they will be the only ones to fit a bed of that size) and don't need them to be organic or anything unless you insist on it. babies are sensitive way more then adults so you need to use shampoo and soap meant for babies. Also you need to use unscented laundry detergent, no need to be meant for babies just dye and perfume free. Cloth diapers are better for the environment and save money due to being reusable but the choice is really up to you. You would need over 3 cause they will go through a lot in a day and they need to be washed in order to be used again. I personally never planned on making my own wipes so couldn't tell you if you can but they do have really good disposable ones that are safe for sensitive babies skin. Any type of pump works the manual one is the cheapest cost wise. You can just use a crib if you have the room a bassinet is only useful if you can't fit a big crib in your room and want the baby to be in the same room that you sleep in. Toys are good for development so do suggest getting some though a newborn will only have use for one if it sings. They do have blankets that wrap around your newborn and act like a dress without a hole in the bottom.

What is the best toys to get my baby for his first Christmas?

Karen G

I want to get him a toy box for future toys and he won't mind getting that instead of a toy. I just don't know whats the best for toys. I get confused everytime we go to the toy department. The problem we have is that he'll be 1 year old only a month later so its hard to get him 12 month toys for his first christmas and then older toys only a month later. At this point he usually likes the packaging more than whats in it.

Answer
For my son's first Christmas, we gave him diapers. =)

Don't worry so much about the ages listed on boxes. My son plays with just about anything that we help him find interesting. Even if the toy says "18 months" there will be plenty that he will find interesting. Really you only need to watch out for small parts he can swallow or moving parts that can pinch. Other than that, find something that you think fits his personality- animals, trucks, etc- and let him figure it out in his own time.

Also, books are always good. Even if they seem old, they always grow into them. Kids love pictures, plus you can feel like you're helping them learn.

OH- and if they make noise, make sure they have an OFF button. Rule number 1!!!

Right now, my 13 month old son is walking around with a diaper and an empty bowl. Kids love anything they can learn to manipulate. But now I think I'll go help him play with some real toys- my break is over. =)

What is a good quality toy for a toddler girl that she can pass down to her kids one day?

When my brother was a kid, he always got Tonka trucks for Christmas and my Dad made him take really good care of them so that he could pass them down to his son one day. And he did. He's 32 years old now and has given the trucks to his new son. So my Dad wants all his grandkids to be able to do the same thing. So he's been buying his grandson's really nice pedal tractors for Christmas so that they can save them and give them to their kids (and they're going to be worth a ton of money one day). But he hasn't been able to figure out what to do for their girls. What can he get for them that they can play with now (gently) and take good care of for the future so that they can pass them down to their own daughters one day? Anyone have any ideas?

Answer
A Steiff bear seems the way to go. Or how about the precise same thing you get the boys, gender equality and all that. But Steiff bears are nice, I think any kid will be able to feel the quality and realise it is an important toy to keep through time.

Startup Business Idea - How To Get Into The Family Leisure Centre Business In The UK?

Ace

Pls give me a link to a guide that details the business potential of family leisure centres in the UK. Thanks.

Answer
If you're looking at the family leisure and entertainment market in the UK, the best way for a small business to enter is through the 'hiring' route.

This means you become a supplier of goods on hire to family leisure centres in or around your local area, appropriately targeted to what the visitors want and the leisure centre needs. An example of this is a guide call 'How to run your own Bouncy Castle Hire Business' (site below) that gives you A-Z details of entering the lucrative 'bouncy castle' business that's so popular with kids and grown-ups alike.

It's a good way to network socially and build yourself a small business in the process. I'm saying this from experience as my own cousin is a successful entrepreneur supplying for-hire games and giant party toys in the West Sussex region.

I am a mom of 4 chidren and have recently posted some items for sale on Ebay. I've heard that a lot of people have had success doing this. I'm concerned though that no one is bidding on my items because I don't have a rating score yet. How will anyone trust that I will ship them the merchandise they purchased or that I'm legitimate. I know I would be skeptical to purchase anything from someone w/ no rating score. Can anyone give me any tips. I'd love to hear some success stories! I'm not looking to be rich. Just make some extra spending cash for the kid's and myself. I am a stay at home mom and thought this would be great for me. Thanks in advance for your responses!
Thank you...thank you for all your responses. I know the fees Ebay charges sometimes makes me wonder if it's worth the while. Guess I just have to be patient.

Answer
My personal opinion, I think ebay has dried up.
But, dont worry about your lack of rating score.
Everyone starts at zero. You may wish to buy in ebay a few things to get your numbers up. People hardly even leave feedback anymore. Now, ebay appears to be a liquidation centre, so sure, try your things that are sitting around at home. I got some good cash back when I liquidated my jewelry business, last January 2006, BUT, certainly never got more than what I originally paid. This past year I sold nice NEW wooden toys, that was unsuscessful. Imagine I did not make it to December, christmas time! My feedback is almost 300, a fast rise to superseller in Feb2006, then downhill. Those add on ebay fees can be unwittingly cumbersome, and shipping fees. Maybe my biggest shortfall is that I live in Canada. Ebay is a great place for those looking for a bargain, but you dont want that bargain to be at your expense. So, I think used items, and used toys could do you well. You do have a large market base (USA).

I hope my experience story was somewhat helpful to you.

Does anyone know of a modeling agency that works specifically with special-needs and disabled kids?

JulesDPH

I know that Toys "R" Us uses special-needs kids in their print ads all the time and other companies do as well. I found an agency called Beautiful Kids Inc. However, it seems that they are out of business - as their phone number has been disconnected and there is no website for them. Please let me know if there are others out there or if there is updated information for this one.

Articles:
Sacrificing truth on the altar of diversity
By Jeff Jacoby, Globe Columnist | August 30, 2006

YOU'RE A publisher of children's textbooks, and you have a problem. Your diversity guidelines -- quotas in all but name -- require you to include pictures of disabled children in your elementary and high school texts, but it isn't easy to find handicapped children who are willing and able to pose for a photographer. Kids confined to wheelchairs often suffer from afflictions that affect their appearance, such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy. How can you meet your quota of disability images if you don't have disabled models who are suitably photogenic?

Well, you can always do what Houghton Mifflin does. The well-known textbook publisher keeps a wheelchair on hand as a prop and hires able-bodied children from a modeling agency to pose in it. It keeps colorful pairs of crutches on hand, too -- in case a child model turns out to be the wrong size for the wheelchair.

Houghton Mifflin's ploy was recently described by reporter Daniel Golden in a Wall Street Journal story on the lengths to which publishers go to get images of minorities and the disabled into grade-school textbooks. A Houghton Mifflin spokesman claimed that able-bodied models are presented as handicapped only as a last resort. But according to one of the company's regular photographers, the deception is the norm. At least three-fourths of the children portrayed as disabled in Houghton Mifflin textbooks actually aren't, she told Golden. In fact, publishers have to keep track of all the models they use for such pictures, so that a child posing as disabled in one chapter isn't shown running or climbing a tree in another.

Faked photos of handicapped kids are just one of the ways in which truth is sacrificed on the altar of diversity. The cofounder of PhotoEdit Inc., a commercial archive that specializes in pictures of what it calls ``ethnic and minority people in all walks of life," advises publishers that images of Chicanos can be passed off as American Indians from the Southwest, because they ``look very similar." Similarly, Golden notes, a textbook photographer tells clients that since the ``facial features" of some Asians resemble Indians from Mexico, ``there are some times where you can flip-flop."

Yet pictures of authentic Hispanics who happen to have blond hair or blue eyes don't count toward the Hispanic quota ``because their background would not be apparent to readers." In other words, rather than expose schoolchildren to the fact that ``Hispanic" is an artificial classification that encompasses people of every color, publishers promote the fiction that all Hispanics look the same -- and that looks, not language or lineage, are the essence of Hispanic identity.

Some images are banned from textbooks because they are deemed stereotypical or offensive. For example, McGraw-Hill's guidelines specify that Asians not be portrayed wearing glasses or as intellectuals and that publishers avoid showing Mexican men in ponchos or sombreros. ``One major publisher vetoed a photo of a barefoot child in an African village," Golden writes, ``on the grounds that the lack of footwear reinforced the stereotype of poverty on that continent." Grinding poverty is in fact a daily reality for hundreds of millions of Africans. But when reality conflicts with political correctness, reality gets the boot.

So, on occasion, does historical perspective, as for example when a McGraw-Hill US history text devoted a profile and photograph to Bessie Coleman, the first African-American woman pilot -- but neglected even to mention Wilbur and Orville Wright. ``A company spokesman," the Journal reports dryly, ``said the brothers had been left out inadvertently."

It isn't only when it comes to texts that diversity has led to dishonesty, or even to the manipulation of photos. In 2000, the University of Wisconsin at Madison featured a group of students cheering at a football game on the cover of its admissions brochure. One of those students was Diallo Shabazz, a black senior who hadn't been at the game. University officials, desperately wanting the new publication to reflect a diverse student body, had lifted Diallo's image from somewhere else and digitally inserted it into the football shot. ``Our intentions were good," Madison's director of university publications said when the deception was exposed, ``but our methods were bad."

But the ``good" intentions of the diversity crusaders cannot be separated from bad methods they resort to, whether those methods involve racial quotas in admissions and hiring, the assignment of schoolchildren on the basis of color, or photographic fakery that puts healthy kids in wheelchairs. By reducing ``diversity" to something as shallow and meaningless as appearance, they reinforce the most dehumanizing stereotypes of all -- those that treat people first and foremost as members of racial, ethnic, or social groups. Far from acknowledging the genuine complexity and variety of human life, the diversity dogmatists deny it. Is it any wonder that their methods so often lead to unhappy and unhealthy results?

Can I ask a judge in Indiana to release jurisdiction to North Carolina?

best new kids toys 2012 image

Momma3huma

Current order:
Joint Custody when distance is a factor. Rotation of six months here in NC and six months in Indiana. We were suppose to go back to Court earlier this year. My ex said we will work it out we don't need to go to court. During my current six months that is suppose to end January 15th 2014 for his rotation both of my children had to go to school since my oldest is now kindergarten age. My ex agreed to let me enroll the kids in school for this year. He wants them for next year as in he wants them for school. I did not agree with him and did not verbally say I agree or say it in writing either. He had to give them to me its in the court order for my six months. I want to change the Indiana jurisdiction to North Carolina since the children are enrolled here in school. My reason for asking is because it would make the kids miss a whole lot of school just to go back and forth to Indiana for court.

More Background info on my ex:
He does not have a stable home moves a few times a year, refuses to give me child support (no current order for it, so I filed for it in NC), during his six months of custody I send things to our kids (clothes, toys, food) so does my mother and our extended family. I asked him to help provide our daughter a coat because in January when he got them back I sent her with a very nice coat. When they came back in July, asked him to bring their coats, and their clothes that we sent and toys. We received them with just the clothes on their backs, and their coats. My daughter's coat was in horrendous condition and I couldn't even give it to goodwill. He said he would buy her a new coat. I waited an entire month (because he only sees them on skype once a month when its convenient for him, I never ever tell him no when he wants to see them but it is not my place to remind him he has kids) and he tells me he didn't have the money. He lives with his dad and might pay a few bills sure. I understand you have to help if you live with someone. He isn't forced to pay child support currently. He can not have so many bills that he cant take twenty dollars and buy his youngin a coat. He has never had to ask me for anything for the kids, it was provided. He hasn't sent them one thing while they were here at any point in time. For four months (2012) during my first six months he didn't even call them one time. If I bring up child support I get screamed at. So when he decided to take a month to tell me he didnt have twenty dollars to buy his daughter a coat, I filed for child support.

Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you in advance.

Answer
You would have to file a motion in Indiana to get it moved, and he's going to oppose that and since you are 50/50 there is no reason other than your convenience to move it. The kids don't miss school to go to court, they hardly ever have to go.

6 month rotation won't work for school age kids, so you'll need to go to court and modify the schedule and you should ask for child support at the same time. Get this done before 1st grade. You can probably expect he'll get summers and most holidays since you are asking for the whole school year.

You need to accept that he is a deadbeat. Don't expect the kids to come back with anything. Just set your expectations at zero and then you won't be disappointed. As the kids get older they'll want more expensive things like ipods and phones...don't allow them to take them to dad's house unless you are planning to replace them anyway.

what can kids bring to kindergarden when they sleep?

Anastasiya

my cousin is going to kindergarden next year ( 2012) and we were wondering, can she bring a pillow pet, blancket, with her when she sleeps? what can we do to help her get ready for school? she is 3 almost 4 in a month and 2 days. thank you! if u have any other advice, please tell me! Thank you!

Answer
Check with your school's policy.

I would bring a blanket (nothing new, old blankets from home can be comforting), a stuffed animal for comfort (again from home), and a small healthy snack. Also, a good sturdy container for drinks. Some good choices would be:

-Apple
-Banana
-Carrots and dip
-Apple juice
-Orange
-Grapes
-Blueberries
-Orange juice
-Milk or chocolate milk

Also, as a friendly reminder, if you must by new products, try buying organic or eco-friendly. Many hidden toxins are present in toys that you don't know about it. Here's a good site with cute blankets and the best stuffed animals :)

Feedback on my short essay about animal abuse?

VegasGirl

Hey! This is my second, revised copy. I included references, but I still need to add them for the quotes. Let me know if there is anything else I should change. I also added an additional paragraph. Let me know which paragraph is the weakest.

PROMT: In 500 words or less, please explain the necessity for moral and ethical behavior towards animals.

Remember... you are looking at the content. I still have to go over and phrase everything so it sounds better. (So not all my sentences begin in "it is...") and I need to fix my verbs so they are not all the same. No this is not for school. It is an essay for Reber Ranch.

âHumanity's true moral test, its fundamental testâ¦consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals.â As J.K. Rowling once wrote, âIf you want to know what a man's really like take a look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equalsâ. Animals are considered inferior to man, and therefore have no expectations to help us. Moral and ethical behavior towards animals is necessary because animals suffer from fear and pain, neglect causes harm which is abuse, and unnecessary medical testing often tortures animals beyond imagination, which is wrong because we should treat others as we would like to be treated.

âThe question is not, âCan they reason?â nor, âCan they talk?â but rather, âCan they suffer?â" Dr. Temple Grandin, an associate professor, insisted that the basic function of the nervous system that processes fear and pain is basically the same in humans and other mammals. They feel the same pain that we do. Thereâs a portion of the brain the reacts because of emotion. This reaction is seen in both people and animals. Some scientists use this as proof that animals have emotions too. Many animals such as elephants and bears often appear to be sad when a loved one has died. Our pets know when we are having a tough day, or when we are mad at them. This can cause the pet to feel confused and unloved. They sense when they are getting harsh treatment from their owner. Often, they may feel trapped and depressed. It is necessary to understand this for us to stop taking out rage on our pets. They may not be able to talk, and they surely arenât human, but they can definitely suffer, making it immoral of us to not lightly scold, but yell at and blame pets.

Extremely brutal cases of animal abuse are not as common as less severe abuse. You can still be harming you pets unintentionally. When neglect causes harm to the animal, it is abuse. Have you ever forgotten to give the cat water? Or leave the dog in the car on a hot day locked up while you run to the food market? Would you ever leave a toddler in the hot car alone? Or forget to give it the milk it needs? Most people who abuse animals donât do it intentionally, and this is what is truly scary. For example, in 2010, a woman left her dog in an overheated vehicle for about an hour and fifteen minutes. The dog died soon after its owner returned. Animals have fallen to the back of our minds. They are second thoughts, and treated as living toys. If we take them in as our own, then it is our responsibility to meet their needs.

Another controversial topic in our world today is animal testing. It is necessary to test on animals in order to meet the needs of humans and animals. However, testing should only take place for information that will result in the progress of medicine. According to Jonathan Balcolmbe, author of The Use of Animals in Higher Education, some tests like breaking the bones of animals to imitate the fracture of humansâ bones in car accidents, should not be done at all. These animals are not even sedated. The animals, natural creatures on this earth, have done nothing to deserve this pain. There are other ways to study this without breaking bones of animals. Testing for unnecessary information is also unacceptable. It is immoral to c

Guinea Pig

I am starting an Etsy shop that specializes in guinea pig accessories. Yes, I know there are many people out there already, but they all sell the same stuff! Me and my team are thinking of creative ideas for products to sell. (we're seamstresses) We have already thought of making a guinea pig sling with a cute and comfy holder that is under your arm for the guinea pig. What would you like to see made, or what are some of your every day guinea pig inconveniences that we could over come with a new idea?

Thanks!!!

Answer
In selling market, to make yourself known, you must to:

1) know very well your product's destination (in your case learn all you can about Guinea Pigs)
2) know very well your customer types (see few statistics about Guinea Pigs owners: mens, womans, kids, how hard is to grow a such pet)
3) Guinea Pigs live about 10 years if they are kept in good heart (use that in a fancy way to convince you customers that you products may extend the life and well being of their pets.
4) know your competition, and learn from their (also from their mistakes)
5) be innovative and original (if you have already some guinea pig accessories, you can tell yourself how can be made better with less money). You can try some homemade toys or accessories, or even try to modify what you already have, "in a new light".
6) meet your potential customers on forums and clubs.
7) ask vets opinions about guinea pig's life style and health, and try to tune your products in those directions
8) try to figure that are some types of breeders that may have not a lot time to sher with pets, so they want a "simple" way to keep a pet. Here, imagine a product like aquarium where fish have all they need to live, with minimul interactions.
9) you can include in your products some gadgets to, kids love it, but also can be expensive (here you can check China's way -online- because is cheeper): autofeeders, weather mine-stations, etc.

When you post things on craigs list how do you know if the person is interested?

Kidtrucker

Is it just like on etsy?

Answer
No, craigslist is not like Etsy.

Etsy is an online store-front, much like Ebay or even Amazon.com. You list what you have to sell, set a price, and people contact you online or more frequently, purchase what you are selling online. You get an email, and ship off the goody.

Craigslist is like a newspaper ad. You list what you have to sell, and many different people email you that they are interested in buying it. You personally respond to the emails / texts / phone calls, decide who you want to sell too, then meet with that person to personally deliver the goods. Rarely, you'll mail what you are selling.

Online storefronts are very good for small, easy-to-ship items that have high retail values. Art, collectibles, electronics, etc...

Craigslist is good for real-property, furniture and junk. Anything too big to ship is a good candidate for craigslist. Most furniture, vehicles, homes. Junk entails anything bulk and with low resale value. Most clothing, non-collectible books, kids toys, general tools, etc...

Is Lucas Arts going to make any more Star Wars movies?

pMaster

I think all of the star wars movies are great, but what happens after Luke save the galaxy?? Some people would like to know. I have read stories of him and Leia getting getting married and having kids but i don't like to read books i want to watch it in a action film.

Answer
Unfortunately no amount of "waiting, or kicking back, or being patient" will change the facts. The fact is that there will NOT be anymore live action Star Wars movies ... anyone who says differently is so full of it that it is pouring out of their ears. I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the book series come out in an animated form, doubt it will be to theaters more likely direct to DVD things, but there will not be anymore live action movies.

We all know that Lucas has the ability to change his mind with the direction of the wind but in this case I think we can believe him. In the years since the release of ep III Lucas has been asked two questions over and over and over and over again ... first, will he ever make anymore Star Wars movies and will he allow someone else to pick up where he left off. For the past four years the answer to those two questions has never changed ... NO ... and ... NO ... that's about as close to written in stone as you can get from Lucas. It only came to light last year but shortly after the release of ep III Lucas made a "minor" change to his Will. Everybody still gets all the same "stuff" BUT it has a condition to it now ... if any one of them ever allows anyone to make more movies or remake the ones already done everybody looses everything. We are talking millions and millions of dollars here ... do you really think they will risk it ... neither do I.

I do have to say that this is the first time I've ever seen anybody "witching" about Luke and Mara getting married ... personally I thought they were the perfect couple.

The future of Star Wars is animation ... the current series is running full steam ahead and will be around for a long time ... the live action TV series set in between ep III and ep IV is on track to debut in the fall of 2010 ... Lucas is still looking at the target date of 2012 to bring all 6 movies back to theaters in a true 3-D format. There's a ton of stuff that will be going on in the Star Wars world but none of that stuff will be new movies ... ticks me off too but George owns it all lock stock and barrel and what he says goes.

May The Force Be With You ...

EDIT: To "Boba Fett": Not really ... lol ... keeps my point total up. Now the "reboot" Star Wars questions ... hell hath no fury like an old school fan having his memories messed with ...

EDIT 2: Unless Lucas changes his mind ... then I'll be just another idiot who took him at his word and got hosed again ... I think might have to grab my toy lightsabres and go have a "talk" with the man if he does that ... lol ... but only after he's done making the new movies of course.

.

Should I give up hope of ever meeting a hot chick who is not a mom at Toys R Us?

Not that single moms are not hot, I just do not want to have to compete with some kid when it comes to getting toys.

I spank him, i talk to him and even take away his favorite toy but it still don't work, how do i deal with it?

Answer
Children of this age normally try to acquire some autonomy and decide things for themselves. And you really do have to let him have his way as much as you can without letting him endanger himself or make life very incovenient for you. Or else, he is going to have psychological problems later on.

"Toddlers are constantly striving for more independence. This creates not only special safety concerns, but also discipline challenges. The child has to be taught, in a consistent manner, the limits of appropriate vs. inappropriate behavior."
....
"It is important for parents not to follow into a pattern of negative behavior with yelling, spanking, and threatening of their own."

Here is advice from a pediatrician about how to parent such children:

PARENTING TIPS

The toddler years are the time to begin instilling values, reasoning, and incentives in the child to conform to accepted rules of behavior.

It is important for parents to be consistent both in modeling behavior and in addressing appropriate vs. inappropriate behavior in the child.

Positive behavior should be both recognized and rewarded.

Time-out may be initiated for negative behavior or exceeding established limits.

The toddler´s favorite word may appear to be "NO!!!" It is important for parents not to follow into a pattern of negative behavior with yelling, spanking, and threatening of their own.

Teach children names of body parts.

Stress unique, individual qualities of the child.

Teach concepts of please, thank you, and sharing with others.

If not already reading to the child on a regular basis, this is a good time to start -- it will enhance the development of verbal skills.

Is It Safe To Leave My Toddlers Play Desk In Her Room At Night?

My daughter is nearly 2 years of age and i have recently moved her into her own room with a safety gate.
She has a desk in her room for which today she was climbing on and i have become a little worried of the idea she might use it to move to the door and climb over the safety gate.
My partner says i am over reacting; but seems this is highly possible, i am not sure that i am? Any advise please? Many thanks in advance.

Answer
teach her not to climb

Remember you can child proof your house but not the world. She needs to be taught what is safe & what isn't. So if you removed the desk from her room and other things she can't climb on then what is going to do the moment she sees thing she can climb on? CLIMB

My son was a climber. We made sure his dresser in his room was secure to the wall but that is it. When he would want to try to climb things we would firmly tell him no, tell him it wasn't safe & so on. If he did climb on something he wasn't suppose to like grandma's bar stools & he fell a bit we'd say "No climbing. You will get a boo boo." This would get the message across.

Make sure her room is safe with out let covers & making sure furniture like dressers, toy boxes & so on won't fall over on her. But that is it.

Show her how to sit in a chair for her desk. Show how it is used to color & draw. If you see her tying to climb on it again just tell her no. Showing her how to use the desk will also explain why isn't for climbing.

We also made a rule where you only climbed outside. Like it is ok to climb on the swing set or play land thing. It is ok to climb onto a see saw or jungle gym. But it is not ok to climb on things inside. Does that sense?

Teach her she isn't to climb over the gate. No touching the gate either. I'm curious at why you have a safety gate on her door?? Do you just not want her to come out of her room at naptime or bedtime? You can teach her taught. Right now all the gate is to her is road block. All she knows is she can't go past it. But does she know why? You can easily teach a child to say in their room when you want them to & yes even at 2 you can do that.

I wrote an article about "Room time" which includes that you can read it here -

Whats the best gift to give on Valentines day to a Game Techie?

best kids gadgets 2011 image

GM Nirvell

My better half is what you call a Video game junkie. He works, lives and breathe gaming. Though I am thankful that he hasn't crossed the overly gross stereotype nerd, being that he is a techie and works for a prestigious electronics firm, most of the time he gets all his Must haves in advance. Like Apple products, latest release on games, freebies, premium tickets to concerts and heck even field level seats on our local football stadium for the NFL season ( he already just got his for the 2011 season).
Also he has been generous with me on gifts, which puts me to shame since he is becoming difficult to shop for. Most items I would like to get him are either sold out, something he already bought, over the $300.00 mark, not from this country or special participation items.

His birthday is right smack around Valentines day being only 3 days apart of each other.
I want to give him a good gift that he would absolutely be wowed with. And for those who would say just cook him dinner. That's difficult for me. He recently just turned Vegetarian and is switching now to Vegan which makes my cooking list getting relatively smaller.

As a note, he is a huge fan of Electronica and Trance, but prefers downloading mixes via itunes, he collects a lot of Vinyl records from rap and dj/dance singles
He is an avid Street Fighter and Capcom fan and has a vast collections of merchandise of their games
He is also a Japanaholic and loves everything Japan. especially electronics
He is a Mac user and has both an iphone and ipad.

Any Ideas for a gift or websites with cool electronic gadgets that are unique.

Thanks

Answer
All I have to say is wow. you have your hands full. He is like a big kid like my bf. My bf is a video game junkie too. Plays black ops all day. I cant get a chance to watch my food network or law and order etc.
You can try to step out the box and get him something sentimental that would remind him of you all the time. He might be touched. Think of some memories that he shared with you in the pass that he really like or appreciated and see if you can come up with something unique.

Check this site out, it has some cool stuff, it helped me, hope this helps good luck

Answer
You should get the 3DS.

Because you can play music (even with the system close).

You can LOWER the VOLUME of 3D so it does NOT give you headaches for the first time in your life (if you're the kind of person to ever get headaches from 3D, otherwise just turn the 3D all the way up).

And you can also turn the 3D OFF Completely.

And 3D is good for working out your eye muscles & brain to keep them in shape as shown in this link:

http://www.aoa.org/x17309.xml

And the Nintendo 3DS has downloadable 3D Music videos from today's American music artist which I have already downloaded the 3 free 3D Music Videos to watch anywhere and the 3DS has 3D "Blue Man Group" video and College Humor (in 3D) with the FREE "Nintendo Video" App that you can download (but its 4 3D Videos at a time and they replace them once in a while) and you can download cheap downloadable 3D Apps & 3D games costing from 99 cents to $5.99 and the Nintendo 3DS also has FREE downloadable 3D Apps & 3D Games, which I have already downloaded 3 Free 3D Apps and I have downloaded 2 Free 3D Games and the 3DS has a 3D Camera and I have already used the 3DS 3D Camera to take 3D photos and I have uploaded some of my 3D footage online using the Nintendo 3DS's Web Browser to upload my 3D footage online and I have used my 3DS Web Browser to also download other peoples 3D footage from the Internet on my 3DS Web Browser and I have view all sorts of 3D content on 3D Websites online on my 3DS's Web Browser and I have use my 3DS 3D Camera to play 3D Augmented Reality games as well and it's all in 3D without the Glasses using the 3DS 3D Camera and It has beautiful 3D HD graphics that equal to that of a 3D HD version of Wii Graphics and I have Streamed 3D Videos Online on my 3DS in the eShop and I have also Watch 3D Trailers for upcoming 3D movies coming to Theaters in 3D and I have done all of this in 3D Without the Glasses.

So you can pay $169 for a Nintendo 3DS and buy the greatest Games ever & all in 3D Without the Glasses like Petz Fantasy 3D and Cooking Mama 4 and Gabrielle's Ghostly Groove 3D and Nintendogs + cats and Zoo Resort and Cave Story 3D and Kid Icarus and Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 using the MOTION SENSORS to play the game like if you were turning a real steering wheel to turn the Kart left & right and also play such other 8 GB 3D Games like TheatRhytem Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts 3D and Crush 3D and Shinobi and Animal Crossing and Rodea the Sky Soldier and Michael Jackson: the Experience 3D and Ridge Racer 3D and Super Street Fighter 4 3D and Monster Hunter 4 and Golden Sun 4 and Star Fox 3D and Zelda 3D and Sonic Generations 3D and Tetris 3D and Resident Evil: Revelations and Tekken 3D which also has the 3D Movie Tekken the Movie 3D in it to watch and also play other 8 GB 3D HD games as Spider Man 3D and 100% of the 3DS games are in HD 3D Without the Glasses.

And the 3DS pixel density is MUCH sharper than an average HD TV.

And they're making Angry Birds 3D as a downloadable game.

And the 3DS has DLC (Downloadable Content) like Xbox Live for a bunch of 3DS games to add content to the game later on for Free.

And 1 of the Free 3D Apps I have downloaded was Netflix.

And Netflix is getting 3D Movies in the next few months, so for $169 you can watch 3D movies on the free Netflix App on the 3DS in 3D Without the Glasses.

And 100% of the people who have said that they get headaches from 3D, have said that after up to 1 to 2 weeks of using the 3DS they NO LONGER get headaches anymore and that they now play with the 3D all the way up 100% all the time, non-stop.

But I have never had any problem with the 3D at all, but each person has a different experience with the 3D ON during the first week.

And you can now pay to download 3D & 2D Videos on the 3DS.

And the 3DS is getting Hulu Plus before the end of this year (2011) as a Free downloadable App and Hulu already has 3D Content.

and you can check this Link below for more 3DS Games:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_3DS_games

P.S. You will want to check these sites out for the Web Browser's 3D ability:

http://www.3ds-screenshot.com/

http://3dporch.com/

http://3dspaint.com/

http://www.klutz.com/static/nintendo/n3ds_mm9.html

http://www.instructables.com/3ds/

And the 3DS is getting a Wi-Fi Update this MONTH to RECORD 3D Videos and upload it to YouTube and all of this in the 3DS this Month by hooking your 3DS up to a Wireless Internet Connection like Wi-Fi or your own Home Internet or the Library and so fort during this Month as shown in this Link.

What kinds of rewards do you offer your young children? How do you handle toy buying at age 6?

best kids toys by age image

SnapIt!!

I am constantly told that I work my daughter too hard (at age 6). We were in the grocery store and my daughter was hounding me for a 3-D puzzle she saw and it was $10 for a tiny boxed puzzle. I told her to save up her quarters and her chore money to buy it. She had just spent $5 on a brand new floor puzzle and a new puzzle/ activity book at Goodwill (where she spends most of her money). I have her do household chores (she uses a little vacuum on her room, dusting, wiping counters, tidying up the house, helping me do laundry, and she earns about $5 a week. For good behavior at school and otherwise, she gets coins in her jar. Usually it adds up to about $5 a week on a good week. She works hard because she knows if she does, she'll EARN the things she wants. My daughter always sees things she wants in the store just like every other human being. Thing is- I don't buy it all for her. I've been told I'm a stick in the mud, "let the kid have fun", I've been told I'm too strict. I buy necessities (clothes, food) and things to help operate the toys she already has (batteries, AC adapters, etc). Her eyes light up at the store, and she always says "Mommy, I like this. Can I get it?" I don't get angry or annoyed, I just say "Did you bring your money with you?" When she doesn't, she gets a sad look on her face, and I always get nasty stares from fellow parents in the isle, and I'm wondering if I'm pushing her too hard. I let her be a kid and play, but she's next to me alot of the time doing something. How much is too much and how much do you buy for your kids (toys) on a normal basis (excluding holidays, birthdays)?

Answer
Whatever you are doing its really good as per me. You are reasonable in it. Your daughter will value money well. Also since he helps you in household work as well, she will be more mannered and gonna be well bring up child. Secondly, please don't think about people. There are different people with different perspective. Some will support you some will not. You cannot make everyone happy. So live your life as you want to. Think about your daughter it will definitely help her alot in future. In short, you should not care for people around you, at the end, she spent money paid by you only.

What are some toys that kids of all ages can play with?

B

What are some toys that kids ages 6-12 can play with together? There is also a 1 1/2 year old. Preferably something that can be played with outside and at least 4 or 5 kids can play with at a time or take turns playing. Something the 1 1/2 year old would enjoy too if you can possibly think of anything to fit with that age. We are already buying a slipping slide and sand toys. Does anyone else have any suggestions? Something that isn't very expensive either. Thanks.

Answer

How to keep my dog from chewing everything?

Inner Beau

We just adopted a 2 year old dog from the animal shelter about 2-3 weeks ago. While I've had several dogs in the past, this is the first time one of my dogs have chewed everything she can get her mouth on, shoes, trash (she'll take the lid off the trash to chew up boxes), toys, etc. We have tried spraying her when we catch her chewing, even though it will stop her at the time, she will continue doing it. Recently if she is caught chewing as soon as she see's us she runs to her crate, so we don't even have time to spray her. We have sectioned off a portion of the house so we can more easily keep an eye on her, however it is impossible to watch her 24/7. We even keep my kids toys in their room and keep their doors shut. We try to keep the stuff out of her reach, but with 2 kids who don't clean up after themselves it proves to be difficult. Help! What else can I do to keep my dog from destroying my home?

Answer
Wish I could help you but just yesterday I was trying to take a bone away from my dog and it was in my finger.

How to control a class of two year olds?

lillies

I need help. I teach two year old kids. They do great during circle time and art but when it comes time to transition, they don't listen. I've tried singing songs but they run around and even started pushing each other. Diaper changing is also difficult. I put centers out but while I'm changing diapers, they throw the toys or start taking each others toys away. Any advice from 2 year old teachers would be GREATLY appreciated. Today was especially rough, I need some advice.

Answer
Transitions are definitely the hardest times when it comes to children- I feel ya! I would suggest that you create "games", where you are giving these kids a sense of control and/or an opportunity to feel proud of themselves. For example, for clean-up time I give them a toy and say, "make a shot into the basket!" When they make it I say something like, "you did it! do more!" Before you know it, they are cleaning on their own. For 2-year olds it is all about independence and gaining control over their life, so make them feel as though they have something to gain and/or it is their choice.
If you are alone for diaper changing I would create a space where they all need to be during the changes. Depending on what time of the day it is, I would try to bring out a special activity for that specific transition (ie. pillowed area with special books, magnet blocks with cake pans or baking sheets, large piece of white butcher paper on the floor with crayons, line the table with pieces of tape for them to pull off and re-stick, etc). Simply, something that usually influences quieter and more focused work from the children. However, make it something that they can all do. When my class of two-year olds were going wild I would put an activity on the table like playdough or something and it would bring everyone together.
Hope that helps! Sounds like you could use a helper!

help organizing my 5 year olds closet and room?

Miranda Fo

so my 5 year old has a very small closet..like a coat closet...i do not have bins or anything but its a mess with toys and she cannot reach her clothes. her room is a disaster. i do have a cube organizer but she has soooo much stuff..that she will not part with and no where to put it...it never looks clean..HELP! and i cannot afford to go buy the cool closet organizers so please any household ideas plz.

Answer
Drop-box organizing is really best for kids that age. You organize shoe boxes or plastic bins in the cubes or on the shelves, and that way when she want the box of one thing she takes it out, then drops everything back in and puts it away.

As for the height of the clothing, your best bet is to lower the bar to her height but that would take up the bottom where you want to put the cubicals. So it really is a mater of what you need more-- the cubicals in the closet, or the bar lower.

Maybe you can get the clothes down for tomorrow and put them on the doorknob or something, or designate a place for her to put her hangers and re-hang her clothes, and then you just have to grab them and put them up top.

Parting with some toys is going to be difficult, you can tell her that the room is too crowded so you're going to put the toys on a rotation. Ask her to separate them and put half in a box that you will store elsewhere (your room, or the garage, whatever).

Tell her that after a few weeks, you will bring the old box in and she can switch out whatever she wants-- and since she hasn't seen them it will be like having new toys all over again. Explain she's not losing them, you're just trying to keep them organized by switching them out-- you can even mark "switch day" on a calender and she can look forward to it each month.

But after a couple of months you'll start to see what stays on the bottom of the box that she doesn't touch at all, and you might be able to start convincing her to part with them.

One way I got my kids when reluctant to part with old toys is by telling them to trade them in-- bring them to a thrift shop to trade in for a credit-- bring 10 things and they get to pick out one new one (sometimes their stuff wasn't worth anything so I'd put $2 or $3 down for credit myself).

Once you do get things in order the most important thing is going to be training her to keep up with it, so it's important to strictly enforce rules like 1 thing at a time/put away when done, or have big fun clean up times together and make it fun. Give her lots of praise for keeping her things in order.

what are some things you wouldn't want to miss doing with them?

in april. based in london, but could travel from there. kids are aged 6-12.

Answer
I'm going to assume you're going as a tourist.

As I recall you've read Harry Potter with your kids so I'd probably spend a day doing "Harry" stuff. Meaning stop by Kings Cross and seeing platform 9 3/4, the phone booth that's the entrance to the Ministry of Magic, etc. http://www.lynotttours.com/b-potter.htm for more suggestions.

I'd take a double-decker bus tour. You can get on and off the bus all over town which is kind of a fun way to see the city.. And my kid would enjoy riding on the open top. There are also options to take a open top boat up the Thames from the Tower to Big Ben.

Westminster Abbey. If you don't want to pay the entry fee, you can always go in for either a free organ concert or for a service. There is minimal wandering allowed afterward, but it's totally worth hearing the organ.

Take the tube through town. Learn what "Mind the Gap" means. Keep in mind that like New York, London's subway is not very handicapped accessible.

Changing of the Guard outside Buckingham Palace. You'll have to check the days they do it with fanfare.

The British Museum. http://www.britishmuseum.org/ Lots of stuff for kids too, and who doesn't like mummies and the Rosetta Stone? To be fair, most of the stuff in there shouldn't be there and may one day have to be returned to the countries it was taken from, so go see it now.

Stonehenge. It's so funny, you're driving along and suddenly in the middle of a big field, up pops Stonehenge.

Find Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens.

Hamley's Toy Shop. It's pretty cool.

Going in the London Eye is neat, but...overrated imho.

The Tower of London with the Beefeater tour is worth the money. The McDonald's there, as I recall, is the only place to pee anywhere near it. If you know your British History - especially the Henry VIII stories - it's much more interesting.

If you have Mary Poppins fans, going to see St. Paul's (where the Bird Woman feeds the birds) and running through Hyde Park and Mayfair might be worth doing.

And because it's 2012, you might want to check out the Olympic Village if you can.

EDIT: Sorry, I kept thinking about it. While it's not interesting for kids, it's kind of interesting for adults to walk by 10 Downing Street. Go to Harrods and go into the basement where the food stalls are. Oh. And if you want to get around the "tourist route" on public transit, look into the #12 bus. And if you want to travel, go see the Royal Pavilion at Brighton http://www.brighton-hove-rpml.org.uk/RoyalPavilion/Pages/home.aspx . It's....probably the most obnoxious building I've ever seen. And if you go to the British Museum, have tea at Bea's of Bloomsbury. http://www.beasofbloomsbury.com/

best kids toys under $20 image

Theresa

I need some ideas. Is there anyone out there who is a teacher or Scout leader how got a really good present? I would like to keep it under $20, since I have four kids to buy for.

Answer
There is no perfect answer, but as an ex-Scout Leader and the husband of a long-time teacher, here are a few ideas...

General Guidelines-
1. Avoid stuff from Scout or Teacher stores- they usually already have all that stuff. Likewise, generally avoid gifts that say Teacher or Scout Leader on them.

2. Avoid trinkety stuff- little things that sit around, desk top toys, cute calendars, etc. Most of these people get a lot of that kind of gift.

3. With both of these groups, ANY gift that shows your appreciation is well-received. Don't worry about it a lot, and keep it simple.

4. If you have a special skill you can offer, your gift of time is usually appreciated- knit gloves or scarves, etc.

5. For teachers, consider office and craft supplies. While not all teachers like this, many usually have an on-going need for supplies to use in class.

6. Food-based gifts. Baked goods, certificates, Omaha Steaks, etc. Heck, a box of good cookies, cupcakes, or brownies would have made my month!

7. Entertainment certificate- movies, DVD rentals, etc. One of our favorite gifts was a certificate for rentals packed with some popcorn, pop, and candy.

8. Many teachers are book-aholics and book certificates are usually appreciated. For Scout leaders, camping or outdoor certificates.

9. A nice pen or pencil, with refills if appropriate, is often a great gift.

What is the best synth for under or around 400 dollars?

Teddy B

I want to get a synth for I band I started, but I know nothing about them.
The only ones I even know of is the micron, miniak, and microkorg.
I was a synth that has big sounds and doesn't sound like it came from toys r us.
I'm lookinf for something good for a gig and recording.
Andy recommendations would be thanked.

Answer
Hi Teddy B,
Get the Korg microKorg Analog Modeling Synthesizer with Vocoder.
It's a great, portable synth. I love using it and it produces amazing quality.
The MicroKorg is probably the finest synth you'll ever get at that price.
It's very small (same size as many of those toy keyboards you grew
up as a kid, but this is no toy), and has 37 keys . It's a four note polyphonic virtual analog
synth capable of fantastic analog sounds, with all the great sounds of the '70s, '80s,
and '90s! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000WS0SC?ie=UTF8&tag=digitsy-post3-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0000WS0SC

What are your best tips for traveling with a toddler?

We are going to Cedar point this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and to the Toledo Zoo on Monday. The drive down to CP is about 5 hours from home. We will have two toddlers at Cedar Point along with four adults and two teenagers.

Answer
What fun - lol; planning the drive around nap or sleep time is always a great idea. However, if that is not possible, try allowing everyone in the car to pick some songs to hear. The teenagers will be able to tollerate the toddler songs if they know they will get to hear something they want (within reason). Picture books, paper and pen, road games - car colors, snacks, lots of stops and some of their favorite toys are some things that have helped me. As a last resort, if you don't have any, find a friend or family member that is willing to let you borrow their travel dvd player and let them watch movies - Babe, Pig in the City is a decent family movie.

Good luck! And remember, family road trips are things that memories are made from. Think Vacation and RV - lol

Answer
When we travel with my brother (Hes 3) and its on long trips we always bring lots of back up plans. Here are some of the basics..

Coloring Books
Favorite Toys
Portable Dvd player
Children Cds
Snacks, Bottles, etc.

My brother hates long trips but as long as we keep him well entertained he normally doesnt give us a problem. The dvd player is always last resort, if everything else fails. Sometimes if we are lucky he'll take a nap and relief us of the annoying songs we have to listen to.. Thank god for Ipods ;)

Searching for inexpensive makeup compacts for little girls to be included in various gift bag ensembles. Ideally including eyeshadow / lipgloss, but at this point I'll be happy with any combination.Club Libby Lu has great ones but will not give me the manufacturer name of them, only that they are made in China......of course!
Thanks!

Answer
