Are vintage Fisher Price toys safe for 1 year old?

needinghel

My daughter just loves the vintage Fisher Price toys at our church. I recently bought her a 1972 toy, which she sometimes puts in her mouth. Do these old toys pose any health risks to her? Do they contain lead based paint, etc? I would just like to know for sure to be safe! Done some research online, but havn't found much information. Any answers would be appreciated!

Answer
No and "maybe". No if they have been opened and not sealed but due to no limitations in the 70's on lead paint usage I would say no unless the toy is vinyl and not plastic. Maybe if the toy is new and never been opened due to large amounts of metal they used in the 70's and these parts oxidize and you can never thoroughly clean these enough so toys without exposed metal I would say no. It's really not a good choice.
We have 2 kids ages 10 + 13 and we have never let them have pre 90's Fisher-Price due to the "unseen" dangers.
Fisher-Price can send you a testing kit and some other manufacturers offers these too.

where to find cheap/good kids toy storage?

whisper to

My sister has a bunch of toys piled up around our fireplace like a WALL, we are in dire need of some good space saving but gotta stretch the dollar, anyone got any good ideas besides walmart/ikea?

something that would be easy for her to find toys & put toys back herself, thanks much!

Answer
It would depend on the size of toys. You can check out craigslist and look for a bookshelf type piece that suits your height/length and stack the toys that way. You can also post "wanted" ads on craigslist free. Check out your local Goodwill or Salvation army or second hand store. It is also fairly easy to build a sort of shelf and easy too. You can search online by typing "how to build a shelf" and you can find step by step instructions as well as a list of what you will need. Then you can have the kids paint the shelf and make it their own. If the toys are smaller, Dollar Tree has tons of Sterlite tupperware type stuff. They are advertised as shoe "boxes", but we use them to store in small pieces and barbie dolls etc. They are clear with either a blue or white lid. We have a ton of them in our house, I use them as a makeup "bag" in the bathroom. They are also great for traveling. Good Luck! I know toys DO pile up, you should see our house!

Any suggestions how to entertain/occupy kids while on an 8 hour flight?

Also, anyone with a big family whose been there and has advice about air travel would be appreciated.
lol Kay. Yes it's the move....Spain
Thanks for missing me=)
"Guess the city" sounds like fun...except that we'll be over water almost all of the tme LOL. Thanks for these answers; I totally would have forgotten pilows! =)

Answer
It depends on how old the kids are
1-2 years old a few small hand toys -nothing with a bunch of little parts on any age.
2 - 3 a few small toys and a 2 books
4 - 7 some colors in a bag 1 color book , a book to read, a travel game.
8 and up a book to read, ipod, and a hand held game.
If the kids are old enough have them put their stuff in a small bag / purse and carry it if the kids are little maybe you can put each child's in a large zip lock bag and put their name on each bag, then put them in 1 large bag for you to carry, you can also put any baby food, snacks, and baby milk, diapers, wipes in the big bag - maybe use one of those cloth grocery bags with handles.
Try to take as little as you can on board .
as for little ones who can walk but might wounder off get a child leash - one that fits around the chest not just on the wrist I always hated them until my first flight with a 3 year old and it became my best friend, with the older kids make them buddy up ,
do a bathroom run before the flight, any stop overs and right after, you have plenty of time before your luggage gets to turn table.
and if the kids can have it make sure they have some gum for take off, if the kids are to little make sure they have a drink at take off time, it will help with ear popping. If your child needs a car seat in the car you could also check to see about useing a car seat on the flight - but be aware that it is a big hassle to carry one from plane to plane if you don't have any help, and you can't use buster (sp) seats on the plane but need them for the ride after the trip pack them in a suitcase so you don't have to buy new ones just for a vacation.

Black rainbow board 90s kids toy?

Dakota C

I used to have this toy and I can't remember what it was called. Maybe Mr. something?
Anyway, it was a black board and it came with a red squeegee. Not very big , probably the size of a piece of paper. You push on the black part and colors underneath paper. Rainbow colors. You use the squeegee to "erase" whatever picture you made. Any idea what it is???

What are the top toys kids are wanting for christmas this year?

willwork4u

So has your kids told you what they want for christmas yet? Let me hear some good ideas say for girls around age 7-10 yrs old? This info will help me alot!

Answer
Webkinz are quite popular--they are stuffed animals that also "live" online.

There's also a new Barbie MP3 player that, in addition to playing music, also allows users to log onto an online Barbie community. http://www.popgadget.net/2007/05/barbie_mp3_play.php

If you can find a Wii (and want to spend the money on it), there's a lot of really nice girl-friendly titles.

Build a Bears continue to be hot items.

There's a Monopoly "Boutique" Edition that is all about shopping at the mall. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2627189&cp

There's also a Monopoly Jr. focused on the super-popular Disney Channel movies and shows. http://www.amazon.com/Hasbro-Monopoly-Junior-Disney-Channel/dp/B000R6V9HU/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/002-9104986-0724864?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1191237391&sr=1-2

Anything High School Musical will be very popular as well--there is a DVD of the live concert tour, plus keychains, poster books, dolls, and more. Hannah Montana dolls will also be big sellers.

For a 7-year-old, if she's still into dolls, consider the new Newborn Cabbage Patch doll. They're on sale this week at Toys R Us for only $12 with free shipping--and they're really cute.

Other ideas:
Activity kits (including jewelry kits) from companies like Klutz ( http://www.klutz.com/catalog/category.php?goto=1000&for=girls&age=8to10&srt=1&x=10&y=15 ) and Creativity for Kids ( http://amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/002-9104986-0724864?initialSearch=1&url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=creativity+for+kids&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=Go )

Gift cards. Kids love being able to pick out their own gifts.

Where is the best place to buy kids toys for christmas?

I am buying for a varitey of ages (1, 2, 4, 5 and 9), and want to get good prices too. Suggestions on national chain stores with good selection and good prices would be appreciated. Thanks!

Online! I have a bunch on nieces and nephews plus my own toddler. There is nothing worse than a crowed toy department. I'm beating them all by purchasing all those toys online. Amazon actually gives you free shipping and handling if you spend enough. It's certainly something to consider.

Where are good ideas for Christmas present for kids?

Jasmine

I have 4 neices/nephews from 3 to 10. Where's a good place to get ideas for gifts for Christmas? And is it better to buy online or fight the lines of Black Friday?

Answer
There are many lists put out by different toy stores, kids magazines, etc.

There is the Toys R Us Fabulous 15:
http://www.santaschristmascorner.com/toys-r-us-fabulous-15-toys-r-us-2012-holiday-hot-toy-list/

Also, K-Mart has it's own Fab 15 list:
http://www.santaschristmascorner.com/k-mart-top-15-christmas-toys-for-2012-part-1/

There are others, but I don't know the URLs off the top of my head.

As far as online vs black friday, I personally shop online. One, I don't like to get up early. Two, I don't like being trampled by people trying to get the 3 TVs for the special price. And Three, you will usually find bargains just as good or nearly as good online if you keep your eyes open.

Furby 2012, yes or no?

VeggieZenn

Furby, 2012

A Young boyâs idea of the best and worst toy of 2012

Ok, so, I have been itching to say something about Furby. I have a friend who owns the old furby, and it would be completely normal to own one. (As long as itâs not hot pink, lol) I, for some reason, was lured to it like a cobra. I knew I could get it, but thankfully, a sarcastic 20 year old snapped me out of it. His very dry remarks made furby look like he needed to go to a mental hospital.

I then read one from a mother, who gave furby a better review, but I was told of the no on/off button crisis. Great, now Iâm gonna be waking up in the middle of the night hearing furby go: âME HUNGRYâ or âOOGA OOK BLAH BLAH MOOSH MOOSHâ (An example of itâs annoying âFurbishâ.) I have a feeling my father, who, when working, is quite stressed, would take that little thing and throw it out our 2 story condo deck onto the concrete.

I then, though, heard it could be put to sleep, and permanently close its eyes in a mode very similar to an âoffâ mode. That upped my hopes a little.

That was then crushed by the fact âHow you treat your furby shapes itâs personalityâ Well thatâs juuuuuusst great. Now Iâm gonna have a demonic furby thatâs all like âWHY THE $%^& DID YOU CRAM ME IN THE TOY BOX FOR DAYS WITH YOUR ^%$# DIRTY GI JOE, PUNK!?!?!?!?!?!â So, that gives me an idea.

If a creepy doll like chucky were to come to life and murder his owner, furby is case file number 1.

After reading so many reviews to the point my eyes hurt, I still am oddly drawn to the prospect of having my own furby. Do the doctors drug me at birth? Maybe. Do the commercials have a certain announcer that hypnotizes kids? Possible. Is it just kid nature? Most likely.

Anyways, we will never know weather or not to get a furby!

Comment below with thoughts on if I should get a furby! ï

Answer
Furby's are wonderful toys and yes you should get one, though they are on the pricey side they are excellent toys and are now new and improved. Yes buy a 2012 Furby.

How do you organize your toddlers toys?

Dani

I have 2 toddler girls; 4 and 2 and not sure how I should organize their toys. I have been using empty diaper boxes for their toys (hey! they come in handy, haha) and I just throw everything in there.. big toys, small toys, parts to other toys. For the past few days I've been rearranging their room and want to organize their toys better. Where do you put big toys like for example a leap frog pad or anything of that size? How do you keep certain toys together like all blocks together, play doh, or whatever else like that?

My daughter's don't have a book shelf or any shelf in their room so I can't use anything like that. There are 2 dressers that would be free to put anything on top.

Come on guys, I really need some help lol I'm having brain farts! LOL Thanks

Answer
We're fortunate enough to have an extra bedroom that we've converted into a play room for the time being, so we have a whole room set just for my boys toys. I'm a bit of a neat freak and like to keep things organized. When we moved into our house I bought these big organizers from The Container Store and sorted each by size, what type of toy they were, etc. We bought two of the organizers-one for each of my boys. We also have other bins and a big chest that we've collected over the years to hold their things. All of it has certainly come in handy-and it manages to keep the playroom semi clean(most of the time!) :)

Toddler Girls Competing with each other....Going Crazy!!!!?

Briann

I have one daughter and she just turned 2 and my boyfriend has a daughter as well and she is 4, and he has her half of the time, and I have my daughter full time.
And when they are together, honestly its hell.
Screaming, fighting, biting, pushing, not sharing... everything!! Its rare to see them playing nice.
My daughter is at the age where everything is 'MINE' and she bites and hits occasionally. but I am very strict on that with her.
My boyfriends daughter instigates and teases my daughter constantly.
always saying 'look what i have' and not giving it to her or holding it above her head, then in result my daughter will take it away, cry cause she cant have it or hit.

Either way they are both playing off each other and unhappy all the time.
When they are separate, its great and when we take them out to do things, like the park or a playplace, things like that they are also great. We try and get them out everyday but its hard cause we work, kids in daycare, when we get home its supper time, bath time and bed time.

I am about to go crazy listening to all of this screaming and watching them fight, any suggestions would be really helpful.

also, I do discipline my daughter but its a bit harder to discipline someone else child..

Answer
Sounds like..jealousy to me, your dd havign to share you with her, and her being in your dd's space??? His dd may feel...like a third wheel because your dd is with her Daddy all the time. Even though they arent together all the time, maybe when you are all together, doing seprate things would help?? If you took turns...so when you are all togeher, one day you take your dd out so they have alone time in the house..then switch..he takes his dd out and you spend alone time in the house...and plan something fun that evening...play games, watch tv,

My kids are two years apart, a boy and girl. When they fight over a toy.."look what I have"..please don't do that, if you want to play with it..go play, and distract your dd with something else...If she continues..take the toy away! If you can't be nice, you can't have this toy.

At 2 my daughter bit, hit, pushed, and pinched. she was a little bully! at first I scolded her...(giving HER the attention, negative attention, but 2 year olds love attention anyway they can get it) one day I looked at my son..sad and hurt because he was hurt and I was giving her the attention. So when she hurt someone...I said...we dont hit..that isn't nice!!! and went to the person who she hurt and gave them the attention..."are you ok..I am sorry Lizzy hurt you(i gave her a look) I hugged, kissed and coddled them, more than needed so she would realize...it isn't ok and she will not get attention for hurting someone. I ignored her for a few minutes after it was over...said..you should be nice to others, we don't hit, bite, push...please don't do it again. then hugged her, "play nice". IT worked!!! took a few times but, that phase was shrot lived. she assaulted strangers, my son, me, friends, and my niece(who I watched a few times a week..she was jealous of her and didn't like that I had to care for her.)

IMO if his child lives with you half the time...you should discipline her, and it should be ok. Her father needs to agree with the way you discipline. (not hitting!) disciplining, time out, taking a toy or privlidges away, explaining the rules and enforcing them each and every time.

You are a big part of your bf's dds life. Maybe if you took her out alone and spend alone time with her...maybe that would help her feel welcome in your home. take her to lunch, or to a movie, bowling, or to the grocery store. just you and her. talk with her, maybe she will open up to you and tell you how she feels and why she is acting the way she does. She is older, and understands more, and is able to tell you how she feels. Maybe she will tell you something, that will help you fix things. If you can get her to be nice to your dd..your dd will follow.

Toddler on an airplane?

mommy of 2

My daughter and I are going on a trip, and I was wondering what kind of identification she will need, if any?

I was also looking for some tips on what kind of things to bring on the plane with me. Thank you!

Answer
Acceptable forms of identification are established by the T.S.A

However when a child under the age of 18 is traveling with an adult they are not required to show any identification. Unless the child is a lap child then they might ask to see Birth Cert. to verify age. If your going out of the country you will need a pasport. Me personally when I travel with my son (one year old) I bring a copy of his Birth Cert. Just in case. I have yet to be asked to show it. But the one time they might ask I want to make sure I do have it on hand.

About things for you to bring for your child. Anything that you know she likes that will keep here happy. Toys she really like if she has a favorit book or coloring books. Snacks she loves to eats. Any thing to keep her busy sitting down.
If you dont have a min. DVD player it is worth it to get one. A few of her fav. moves & your there in no time! ;o)

Hope this helps!

What are some good toddler travel toys?

KL

I am going on an airplane with my 18 mo. old dd. and she'll be sitting on my lap through the flights. They are not too long, about 1 1/2 hours each (of course, if she screams the whole time, it could feel like an eternity :). I'm kinda nervous about her not being able to have a lot of room to roam. Any good suggestions on portables toys or activities that would keep her occupied?

Answer
I also have an 18 month old and we travel frequently.

We bring reusable stickers, Playmobil 1.2.3. figures (for imaginitive play), books and some snacks (preferably small items like dried apples that take a while to eat).

Where can I buy cheap toys in australia?

Has A

any good online kids toys store?

Answer
I have couple of toddlers at home, So I spent quite sometime online looking for some good deals in kids toys. There are many online store for preschool kids toys. But my favorite one is FSTORE.

FSTORE have good toys collections and all backed up with money back guarantee. They also offers variety pack which is like a basket of different toys but much cheaper than buying individual items.

Free Delivery, If buying more than $80 they also give away free postage australia wide.

Free Pick Up, As store is located in North sydney you can also pick up your item from the store for free of charge.

Gift Wrap, If buying gifts for friends, you can also request for a gift wrapping. with additional $2 dollars you can have your gifts wrapped beautifully.

Gift Certificate, If you can't decide what to buy for your friends then you can also purchase gift vouchers of any value.

Best of all if you like to touch and feel the toys at your own place, then FSTORE comes to you. you can organize MEET FSTORE party at home and invites all your friends and fstore will bring all of its collection to your place.

My experience so far with FSTORE has been great, I truly believe what they say, Australia's Best Value Toys and Gifts Store.

Give it shot.

school kids birthday prezzies ?

mimi

my daughter is forever bringing home party invitations she even has 2 parties on the same day next week! i was just wondering if anyone had any good ideas of what to buy as spending about £15-£20 on each kid is getting rather expensive! i dont want to get anything that looks too cheap as it seems to be who can buy the best present when i go to kids parties these days. not that i agree with that. i always try to get as much as i can for them with the money like buying toys that are half price etc. the parties are for girls 5th birthdays.

Answer
Yes, this is an expensive stage.

I'm in Australia and things may be different here but I think you're being very generous. I'd only spend $20 - $25 on a gift, the $25 being for a good friend. Not exactly sure what that equates to these days but less than 20 pounds.

For girls, I go for some stuff from the Bodyshop - a pot of strawberry lipgloss, some bubble bath and one of those fruity soaps, all nicely wrapped or in a cute bag or whatever. Hairclips or other hair accessories would be good additions.

Boys are harder.

Toddler toys: Should gender matter?

Proud Momm

My daughter will be 2 this Christmas, so naturally my husband and I have started thinking about gifts for her and I have actually started buying things here and there when I catch good deals..I hate shopping at the last minute, hence why i'm talking about Christmas in September..lol. Last year, we bought my nephew the toy "Chuck the Talking Truck" and it was a big hit with him and my daughter loves playing with it. This year, they have a new "Chuck the Talking Truck" toy that is a newer version, so I automatically thought that it would be a great gift for this Christmas for her and I mentioned it to my mom's friend and she said "you are going to get a little girl a truck for Christmas?" She then said that my daughter needed "a doll" or some "girl toys" instead of a truck that is a "boy toy". I'm not really down with the whole "boy" toy or "girl" toy thing. To me, a toy is a toy and if your child enjoys it, it shouldn't matter. My daughter loves dolls, so i'm sure she will get one for Christmas, but can't she like truck too, especially one that is as neat as "Chuck" lol. She gets hysterical when she sees him in stores...I still plan on buying it for her, but what do you think about the whole issue? I also bought my daughter the "Stand and Play Raceway by Little People's" for a christmas gift too and she was like "are you going to get her any "girl toys" for christmas....what is it with this woman and girl and boy toys?? How do you feel?

The new robot BigFoot toy comes on tv all the time and she really likes it too and she loved playing with the display of it at Target...I mentioned this to her after I heard how appalled she was over the truck and the raceway toys, so I thought shed drop dead at the thought of this...lol.
Not just toddler toys, but toys for kids in general?
My in-laws are raising our nephew.(their grandson).have been since he was born and his dad or grandfather however you look at it had a cow because he was carrying around one of my daughters dolls. I don't know what the big deal is. Its role play..little boys have little brothers and sisters that we encourage to be "big brothers" to, they grow up to be fathers, day care providers, etc..what is the problem?
I agree with everything you all are saying. I would rather my child enjoy herself and have the option to choose what she plays with, rather than me put limits on what she plays with because of boy/girl toy sterotypes.
Alanda..I totally understand your reasoning and no, there is nothing wrong with your son watching Dora...its better than spongebob in my book anyday.

Answer
You know..I think that whatever she plays with is fine..who cares if she loves chuck the truck. I like Chuck the Truck, my son has one and its a fun toy for a little one this age. My neice and my son get together (they are both 2) and they sit her dolls in the back of all of his trucks and they play. Little ones don't know gender and who should play with what..they just see fun.

I know how you feel..my husband has a coronary everytime my son wants to play with something that may not be as masculine as he would like or when my son picks out some crazy color of shirt or shoes..but they are their own little person and they have their own style and likes and dislikes. He is still all boy and I don't worry about anything- he is a kid and I let him have his own way of doing things. I like to think that if I don't stifle the person he is now that he may grow up to be something great as well as tolerant and open minded. I'm trying to raise an outside of the box thinker.

And I totally agree- I would rather my son watch Dora than spongebob or one of the other crude cartoons out there right now.

christmas question...?

proud youn

christmas question... okay so as a mommy i have had 3 past christmas times. my sons 1st christmas i lived at home with my mom so didnt have to pay bills other than my car and phone so my son got a lot spent on him for christmas and had A LOT of gifts. his second christmas the older ladies at work were talking about how they missed getting gifts for small children and would like to help out the associates with kids so they had employees with kids who wanted to participate write down their childs gender, age, clothing sizes, and what they liked. my son got about 6 toys and an outfit from that and i bought him 3 toys and an outfit. last year money was tight bc i was on my unpaid 7 week maternity leave so we had 1 income. my son got like 3 toys, a pillow pet, an outfit and had some candy/matchbox cars, and a dvd in his stocking. my daughter got a 2010 christmas teddy bear (since it has the yr she was born on it to keep as a keepsake thing and a little stuffed snow man in her stocking. .... so for 2/3 years our christmas's have been really small. this year im thinking of getting my son his first bike with training wheels (all he has now is a redflyer tricycle), a helmet, and an outfit (and stocking stuffers of course) and getting my daughter a baby doll, outfit, new shoes (and stocking stuffers) are my kids going to grow up thinking my christmas's stunk and were nothing special if they only get a small number of things? is it okay for now, but i should up the gifts as they get older??
also, my kids both have birthdays in the winter..my daughter is in november and my son is in february. they have huge birthday parties.

Answer
Well, our focus in regard to Christmas is on Christ. We do gifts, but we save big/multiple gifts for birthdays- that breaks the expense up, too.

I think that your children are getting PLENTY. Honestly, one year we did do a "big" Christmas- it was not meant to be that way, but I had bought more than I realized and they were overwhelmed by it all (not in a good way) and it was too much clutter to bring in at one time. Especially at their ages, keep it simple but even as they get older (I have four children ranging from 13 to 1) you do not have to go overboard.

What classic outdoor toys do your kids love?

pdooma

My son likes his scooter and playing frisbee.

(I'm looking for things to add to his Christmas list that I've been asked for...)

Answer
Wagons have been favorites for three of my children (the baby seems to enjoy riding in them, as well). Even my 12 and 10 year olds still play with the wagons. They grow well with the child, and you can find many different styles for various needs.

How about stilts and/or a pogo stick? Those are things we getting this year.

I seem to recall you have a younger child. Those Little Tikes playsets are well worth the value- they are expensive, but again we have one that held up through our oldest child (now 12) and is still in the same condition for our 5 month old to use when he can. And, we got it used!

Bubbles, sidewalk chalk, scooter and/or skateboard (we have one that converts from scooter to skateboard which is nice), bicycle (of course).

Basketball and hoop

Baseball, bat and catchers mitt

Tent

Hula hoops (even for a boy- they can be used for circus pretend play, as part of an obstacle course, etc. For some reason most people seem to think hula hoops are "girl" toys).

Sandbox and sand (you can buy or build the sandbox)

Butterfly nets, critter cages (mine like to catch fireflies, caterpillars, frogs, etc. and observe them for a while and then release them)

Garden supplies- a rake, hoe, shovel and some seeds and a watering can

Sprinklers (depending on where you live, it may not be a good Christmas gift)

Badminton

Tree house

My iPad is my favorite electronic gadget and the grandkids love it. It has built in wireless, so can be used to get online when we are in the car...not the driver of course. It's great for looking up places we want to go, like restaurants, it has games on it and I can come here to Yahoo Answers when stting on my bottom as a passenger in the car. Yep, yep, yep! Your thoughts on Christmas presents for your kids?

tagi_65

OK, DH and I grew up very differently with regard to Christmas. Mine was almost obscene in the amount and cost of gifts I received - my parents spent far too much, and then I received gifts from other family members. He received one Santa gift, one gift from his mom and dad and then whatever any other family members got him.

I absolutely do NOT want my children to have the same Christmases I grew up with. I recognize them as being indulgent and probably in some sense an attempt to make up for other things that were lacking in the parent-child relationship.

However, DH wants to give our kids one gift from us and one gift from Santa and then whatever other family members get them. I don't want to do that either.

I think there's a happy medium. We have adopted the one-gift from Santa rule, but I don't think it's bad to have 4-6 gifts from Mom and Dad plus a stocking for the kids, do you? I'm not talking extravagant gifts.

What do you think? How does your family do it?

Answer
Well, the way our house does it...

1) the kids get one or two decent presents from mom and dad. It's usually the most expensive item.

2) everything else under the tree (usually about 8 each, and not very expensive items, $5-$10 each) comes from Santa.

3) the only other people they get presents from are their grandparents and my mom sends money. Usually around $20-30 per kid. Hubby's mom takes me with her shopping and we get what we can for $50 each. It may be one big present or lots of little stuff.

When we grew up, hubby and I never got much for Christmas. My mom was too poor with 5 girls to do very much. Hubby's dad was the grinch in the flesh.

We decided our kids would have a nice Christmas, but I don't spend much. Our kids don't get hardly anything toy wise during the year and they don't have lots of aunts and uncles and other family members to give them anything. Their gifts come from us and the 2 grandmas only. If the other family members got involved, ours would be scaled back a little.

toddler toys are their favorites?

Q. What is your toddler "boys" favorite toys and are worth the money?

Answer
My 2 1/2 year old is absolutely in love with Diego. (It has been a life saver in so many areas! We did his room entirely in Diego, and it actually helped him transition from his crib to the toddler bed with no problems. Anytime he doesn't want to go to bed we just get him excited about his Diego bed!)For Christmas we bought him the big rescue center and his grandpa got him a different one. We can now just buy him the extra animals that go with it when we want to get him a new toy. He gets so excited about these! He takes the animals with him every time we go somewhere that he might get bored, including restaurants. They make a little case specifically for them.

As for other toys that have been worth the money, he likes any form of toy car. He has everything from hotwheels to tonka trucks. I love watching him dig through his toy box and picking out all of the cars (no matter what size) so he can play with them together. He also loves animals (part of this stems from his love of Diego) and dinosaurs. We bought him the little packs of 50 animals and 50 dinosaurs for about $2.88 at walmart and these have been amazing! He can sit there and make each animal noise (again learned mostly from Diego) and he loves to make the dinosaurs roar.

The best toys to get for your son are whatever suits his personality. If he has a tv show that he loves, get toys that are related to that. For my son it not only ensures that he plays with them, but it also makes him get more into the educational shows. He's learning spanish, animal noises, and counting way before I thought he'd ever learn it. The only things that I really try not to waste my money on are toys like leapfrog and baby einstien. He's never really gotten that into them, as there is nothing in them that he can relate to. I've known several people who spent alot of money on these things for their kids to never touch them. I know they are supposed to be very educational, but so far my son has learned more from the toys that you would think of as mere novelty.

Good luck!

Essential toys for toddler boys?

Sweetpea h

I want to buy some toys for my son, who will be one this fall. He really doesn't have many toys right now, he'd rather play with the remote. But we want to get him some more interactive, imagination/or educational toys. The only toys I can really think of are blocks and maybe a pedal car. I don't really want to introduce him to war toys, though. What are the favorite toys is your little dude's toy box? We are talking like, 1-3 year old here.

Answer
I've got two boys ages 3 and 2. They love playdoh, if he still puts stuff in his mouth you may have to wait a bit on that. Ride on toys a great one is prince lionheart ladybug, a flying squirrel is good too, puzzles, toy story action figures (buzz and woody), play kitchen, baby dolls, pop beads, walmart shopping cart, shape sorter, elmo toys, play phone, brio pull along daschshund, ball pit, sand box, easel (finger painting), lite brite (small parts), sit and spin they didn't do this till 2, tonka trucks, drums, play tools, candyland factory game, busy bee honey tree game, lucky ducks game, gator golf

Does your toddler LOVE Barney the dinosaur??

crickiebel

Just curious who has a child/children who LOVE Barney. My 2 year old can't get enough of him. I'm wondering when he will grow out of it...for those who have been through the "barney" phase..when did your child start to loose interest? I am wondering how long this will last and how much of an investment I should make on toys, dvd's etc??? Thanks for all answers and help:)

Answer
I have a 4 yr old who STILL wares her Barney DVD's out. She knows all the songs. She plays his games online and whatnot. My 2 stepdaughters got out of Barney about the time they started elementary school. But my little one also loves Dora, Elmo, anything Disney. Dont spend too much money on on brand of toy. We did that with Shrek, and they kinda took a back seat. I never had a son, but if I did, he could watch Barney in the mornings, and baseball the rest of the day...lol.

Which 2013 movie do you think will perform the best at the box office?

Extreme Su

Of all the potential blockbusters this year, which do you think will have the best box office run?: Jack the Giant Slayer, Oz: The Great and Powerful, The Croods, G.I. Joe 2, The Host, Iron Man 3, The Great Gatsby, Star Trek 2, Fast and Furious 6, The Hangover 3, After Earth, Superman: Man of Steel, Monsters University, Despicable Me 2, Lone Ranger, Grown Ups 2, The Wolverine, The Smurfs 2, 300: Rise of an Empire, Red 2, Percy Jackson 2, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, Paranormal Activity 5, Thor 2, Catching Fire, and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. I personally believe Iron Man 3 will be the top movie this year, because Iron Man is very popular already and it is likely that the films with The Avengers characters will get a boost from now on. The one that's likely to perform the worst is probably Paranormal Activity 5, because the Paranormal Activity movies are consistently getting worse and making less. What do you think? Thanks.

Answer
Jack the Giant Slayer,: not feeling it.. i think Singer has lost his edge as a diresctor
Oz: The Great and Powerful, toss up... Raimi is always good, but Franco as Leading man?
The Croods,: first I've heard of it, not impressed
G.I. Joe 2, : already delayed 9 months (was originally due the week before Dark Knight) and last I read being 'dumped' in February, not a known hot time
The Host, Solid Opening week due to TwiHards, seriosu drop after that
Iron Man 3,: block buster... only danger is how close the Next one is released to it
The Great Gatsby,: I don't think enough people Care about the source Material, and it was shot in 3D which might turn people off as superfluous for a Period Drama
Star Trek 2, : big numbers (like Iron Man 3 the only stumbling Block is what comes out the week after
Fast and Furious 6, Does it really nead #6? I can't see anyone more than the Fanboys showing up for this one, and the franchise as a whole didn't hold the top spot often if at all
The Hangover 3, : after 2 feeling like bad rerun I don't see long lines for number 3 unless the promos make it clear its 'original'
After Earth, : Shyamalan like Singer hasn't been that solid of late... and the synopsis from IMDb implies its Jaden Smith's Movie, and Will Smith is just there to help the kid out
Superman: Man of Steel,: I know I'm there on opening night... I think it'll do well
Monsters University,: after Toy Story 3 I see a lot of original fans coming back, not sure how the Kids will grasp a Prequel
Despicable Me 2,: similar to the first
Lone Ranger, : I think it comes down to Fans accepting Johnny Depp as A Native American (regardless of any really NA Blood he may have) and B a supporting character (this also assumes the Director doesn't turn this into Tonto The Movie
Grown Ups 2,: all Adam Sandler Movies play the Same as it is, why bother making a real sequel
The Wolverine,: I think it'll open High, but the Japanese setting will lead to drop off, especially if the next week sees another Big Name release
The Smurfs 2: Really the first one did well enough to Justify a sequel?
300: Rise of an Empire, Save for the Former Bond Girl this looks like a Syfy Saturday night kind of Movie
Red 2, It'll pay for itself, possible Justify a 3rd, but It's more of a Dark Horse than a Block buster
Percy Jackson 2,: I'll see it, but I think it's too far delayed (3 years might not seem like much but last I checked their based on 'Young Adult' Books based on Teenaged Demi-Gods (the actors were already too old then)
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, I see book fans showing up early... but I don't see it even Justifying 1 sequel let alone the full franchise adaption they are hoping for
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2,: not feeling it, 1 was quirky fun, 2 might be overkill
Paranormal Activity 5, : the horse is dead and now the ghost of the Horse if flogging its own corpse
Thor 2, respectable open, the new director and story will tell
Catching Fire,: hard to say... my understanding is that the Tone is completely different from HG... this may play well in teh book series but movie goers can be more fickle
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. : of course its Jackson i iddle arth

I see the Top 5 being Dominated by the Hobbt and Superheroes (I'm clearly not the demographic for the Young Adult adaptations so they Could surprise me)

What were your reactions?

how to get my toddler out of my bed and into her own.?

closure

I am trying to stop something I know I shouldn't have started. Here's the story:
My husband and I had just moved into a new home and he was just starting a new job on a midnight shift so me and my 1 year old would be home alone. I didn't want to make her sleep alone and frankly I didn't want to sleep alone either, so I let her sleep in my bed every night. Now that my husband has switched his shift and now works in the morning and my daughter is 2 now, I can't get her to sleep in her own bed. I also feel bad that she has to get booted out now that daddy's home. My daughter is refusing to sleep in her room, probably because she has never slept in it before. My husband is refusing to sleep in the bed as long as there are 3 of us in it. So he has given me an ultimatum, either make our daughter sleep in her own bed or he sleeps on the couch. How do I get her to sleep in her own big girl bed and get my husband back into my bed.

Answer
First of all many parents feel better having there baby or toddler sleeping with them or at least sleeping in the same room, one popular reason is so they don't have the bedtime fights and 2 to get some real sleep!

Seeing she's only 2 years old, she is still way young enough to teach her to sleep in her own bedroom! Many fathers don't like the babies and toddlers in there bed, one is they can't have there fun with mommy anytime they want and 2 if it's a girl toddler, they don't feel comfortable at all! And that's natural!

But as far as training your toddler daughter, you have to do it in so called baby steps, first you must set up her room with all the things she really likes, then teach her to play in her room with all her toys etc. Don't allow her to play with her toys anywhere else! Once you get her trained to that, then getting her to sleep in her own bed will be a lot easier!

To get her to sleep in her own bed without all the fighting and hassles, Set the bedroom floor up with a blow up mattress, a full size one if there's room, if not a twin will work fine! Then for about a week, the 2 of you can sleep on the blow up mattress in her room ( you and her) Let her use her own blankets and pillow and have her stuffed animal with her, and have a night light on in her room and a radio on low! And be sure to close the bedroom door, so that she will know when the door is closed it's sleep time!

After about a week, start just letting her stay up later until she falls a sleep on the couch or on floor on her own! Then when she has been sleeping a while, then put her in her room on the blow up mattress, with the night light on and radio on low! Do that for about 3 days, then the 4 rd day take the blow up mattress out and put a chair in there so when you put her in her own bed, you can sit in her room for a few minutes, to reassure her that she's not alone! Read a book or magazine until you feel it's ok to leave the room ( most kids do well with like opera music or soft music,no rock and roll! But keep the night light on and the radio on low! If she gets up in the middle of the night, go in there and sit on the chair next to her bed to let her know your right there! Then when she goes back to sleep, you can leave the room again and go back to bed! Just keep going through the process to get her to catch on! But do not lose your cool with her or you will make matters worse! Praise her and reassure her it's ok!

After she makes it through the time she is too sleep, the next morning praise her for doing so good in sleeping in her own bed, tell her she's a big girl now and that your very happy and proud of her! Never lose your cool if it takes a while! Your better off training her at her speed, the better the results and happiness for all!

Fighting with toddlers at bedtime, only makes matters worse! And they not be, the battles only get worse when forcing straight bedtime! How you train her is how well everyone gets to sleep at night nicely! You need to have patients and willing to make it work the right way! Bedtime for too many, is a huge battle! But parents make it a battle not the toddler! They dread being a lone, and it's natural! You could get one of those room monitors too if you don't have one, so when you do go to bed, you will hear everything in her room! and can respond fast to make her feel mommy will be there when she needs her, because she's scared or what ever!

The night light and radio low at night will help her feel more safer in her room! And would be very helpful all the way up to the age around 5 years old, then the radio can be removed if you don't want it in there anymore, but the night light should always be in there, because it helps not having bed wetters!

Most bed wetters are caused because the child don't like the dark and won't get out of there bed to go to the bathroom! And having a night light in the bathroom when the child can go on there own helps a great deal too! Children just hate darkness, so avoiding it does wonders for training to sleep a lone and great for avoiding bed wetters!

It's always a lot better to get a child really sleepy before bedtime, about an hour before sleep time, play a lot with her, tire her out! And sleep time will last a lot longer! If a toddler has a lot of energy at sleep time, it will almost always be a long night! Or very tired parents! Power struggles will not cure anything, it just makes things worse! If normally you have nap time during the day, cutting that out of the everyday schedule will help training a lot more easier too! At least during the bed training time!

If she gets too crabby without the day time nap, then cut the nap shorter, because you have to have her tired at bed time! For the training to work faster and easier! Keeping her up later will make a big difference too! Many parents put there toddlers to bed way to early, 7-8 pm is too early unless the child is tired! If there's battles, that's one of the reasons! When training toddlers to bedtime, it should be at a later time then 8 pm, especially during the bedtime training! 9 pm should be the earliest to have way better success! There will be less fighting and the child will be tired! So a lot less fussing!

Teaching a child that bedtime is pleasurable instead of a war! Life will be very pleasant at bedtime for all! Sure there will be fusses some nights when the child is plain not tired, but you can avoid them by finding ways to tire them out before bedtime! Toddlers have a lot of energy, more then parents even realize, except when sick or just not feeling up to par!

Toddlers are not like a clock, trying to set there sleep time is almost impossible if there plainly not tired! And that 's what causes all the problems at bedtime, knowing what tires them out, is the secret to a great success! Putting them to bed at a certain time like 7- 8 pm is not there sleep time clock, that's yours, trying to force onto them to free up your time! That is the worse way to train a child to sleep, it will cause fussing and battles! And very unhappy toddlers and parents!

Fun Water games ideas?

Yuuki

Tomorrow I have to babysit Dx and I was like .. What better way to pass time than fun in the sun? The kids are all 7 and under, if that helps. Anything with water .. But we don't have a big pool. I have one of those small kiddy pools, so I could use some games including that. I would like some games that are related to water balloons, those toys that soak up water .. Etc. Thanks!
Happy summer! X

Answer
How many kids are you watching? You don't want to overwhelm youself with watching too many kids when dealing with water. I think 3 kids is enough. And what are the ages exactly? You said they are all under 7.... With small children, you can just get some boats or other type of water toys and just let them play. Of course, this will give you the opportunity to teach them about sinking and floating. Once again with small children (like toddler age), you might want to stay away from water balloons---kinda dangerous because of little pieces breaking. Like you mention, those toys that soak up water would be fun---you could have a water fight with those because those are safer....just make sure the children don't whip/throw things super hard cuz that will hurt someone.

An idea I just thought of for the kids I take care of (ages 1 and 2) is a sprinkler. I remember this as a child and it was one of the funnest things!

I was gonna mention squirt guns...but some parents don't want to introduce guns.

Need some more ideas for Christmas!?

Richard D

So so far my list is
â¢Cologne
â¢TV
â¢Ray Ban Sunglasses
â¢Sweats
â¢Clothes
â¢Assassinâs Creed: Brotherhood
â¢Book of World Records 2011

So basically, I need some more ideas to put on my list. I would be perfectly fine with just that, but my mom wants me to make it longer. We have a really close family, and every year all the cousins and aunts and uncles and grandmas and grandpas get together and we give each other gifts. So basically she just needs more ideas to give all them. So I need some ideas that are kinda cheaper but still really fun to play with. You know when you were a kid and you looked through all the catalogues and circled everything you wanted? Well I need some ideas like that that are simple but cool. I'm 14 so I can't really do the catalogue thing anymore because they're all full of little kid toys. So any ideas that I can put on my christmas list will be much appreciated!

Sugar glider or asus transformer prime? "Sugar gliders are legal here"?

As the question stated above, which should I get, me and my family will be upgrading to the iPhone 5 late October-November. Right now I have an iPod touch, "Flashback", my dad told me he would get me a bike, roughly worth 300, I hesitated and asked him if I could get sugar gliders instead, after a while, he ok'd it, (a pair of 2 for 300), i was also thinking about getting the tablet for school purposes with the laptop dock I could buy later. So in your opinion, which do you think I should get. If you decide to help, please do not leave rude comments, I got the iPod mid November 2011, our phones are due upgrade, but we're waiting for next gen iPhone, and my dad was planning on getting the gift "sugar gliders or tablet for the 2 birthdays, and 2 christmas' I told him I would just rather save up for something later on in life. My birthday is in a week, so can you please help me? Sorry this is confusing, I mentioned iPhone and iPod background so you wouldn't think I'm a spoiled brat, the real question was ""(Sugar glider or asus transformer prime tablet)"" BTW, both are priced $300, thank you

Answer
Get the tablet for school. You have the right idea about getting two sugar gliders since they can't be alone, but I think you're forgetting that it usually runs about 150-300 for each glider (unless there is a special deal for buying pairs), then it'll be a couple of hundred dollars more for the necessary supplies to keep them healthy and happy. You need the appropriate housing material: a tall or wide cage good enough to house them will run you about $100 (most likely more) so that'll be $400 now, a glider safe wheel that's not too small for them will be about $20-50, a cage set that has pouches made of FLEECE can cost, depending on the set, what it comes with, the patterns, where you buy them, somewhere from $15-50 bucks, water bottle and food dishes another $10-20 bucks. They need to be on special mixed diets. There's no such thing as a healthy staple pellet diet for gliders. Anyone who tries to sell you gliders with pellet food, heat rocks, a guide, a small cage, etc. is wrong. Most of their diets can be purchased at your supermarket and/or online. To start out, you'll probably spend about $50 for all the ingredients combined, but after it should last you a few months if you buy frozen fruits and veggies rather than fresh. They need toys to keep them entertained so this could run you at the cheapest about another $20 bucks. And then treats anywhere from $10-20 bucks. I'd check out the HPW and BML diets for an idea on what a healthy staple diet is for gliders. If you don't meet their dietary needs, you can end up staining their coat, giving them a calcium deficiency which can paralyze their hind legs forever, shorten their life span and/or kill them.

A few other things about gliders: it's necessary to use fleece for pouches and bedding material. This is so that they don't get stuck on string and chew their body parts off to get free or lose circulation and need to have a leg or a tail (whatever is stuck in the string) amputated. A lone glider can risk becoming depressed, lonely, stressed out and will eventually self-mutilate and/or die. They have no bowel control so they cannot control when or where they pee and poop so there can't be potty trained. You'll be picking up after them very often. They're messy eaters so they fling and throw their food everywhere, even through the bars of their cage. And they can throw far. You'll find food in ridiculous places. Their nails need to be trimmed, depending on the glider, every 2 weeks to once a month, because they get sharp and long and it's easier for them to get stuck on things. It's very hard to trim some gliders nails because they don't like it. They'll make a fuss and if you mess up you can end up trimming too far back and hurt them. They're nocturnal so they must sleep about 20hours during the day. Too much light hurts their eyes. I have four gliders and they usually don't wake up until 1am and they are up until 7am, running around their cage, banging things and barking. If you're a light sleeper, they will probably keep you up most of the night.

Also, be sure to check that they are legal where you live as some places do not allow people to have gliders and others require that you at least have a permit. Make sure to do your research as well. They are cute animals but they are labeled exotic pets for a reason. They're very expensive and high maintenance. No exotic animal is easy to care for. They each have very strict requirements when it comes to taking care of them. It's quite like having a child you have to specially prepare meals for and clean up after all the time, that never grows up! Much harder to care for than cats and dogs. So be careful with your decision! I know many teens and kids who bought them and realized it's too much of a responsibility for them to handle and eventually the gliders feel more like a chore to them and enjoy them less. If you're patient and willing to research and provide for the gliders, in the end they are rewarding pets.

Tmx Elmo best seller?

Moo moo I'

do you think it will be this holiday seasons best seller?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060919/ap_on_bi_ge/elmo_unveiled

Answer
I saw some crazy lady buying 20 of them today...no joke 20...she had two carts full of them. Some people are crazy. I understand wanting to get your kids the "in" toy for the holidays. But I think it's nuts to fight over a doll, truck, or whatever. Every year the day after thanksgiving I go shopping and get some stuff on sale...then I watch all the idiots punching each other cause spoiled little Billy at home has to have the Elmo doll...it's nuts. I would take punch after punch for my kids...but not for a doll LOL

When did your toddler...?

Teen mommy

When did your toddler learn to drink from a big kid cup? Did you get rid of the sippy cups, or keep them for bed time, etc when they did learn?

thanks

Answer
My daughter started trying the big kid cup around 2 years old. I personally don't think it's an important thing to learn young so I didn't push it. She has a cup as part of her bathtub toys and one day she started experimenting.

She still drinks almost exclusively out of sippy cups because we live in a very hot and dry climate and it's important that she has water readily available all day. I'm not going to leave cups of water around the house, so she has sippy cups and I have a water bottle with a built in straw. I fail to see the difference between the two.

Pool toys/safety devices for toddler?

Alyssa B

I have an 18-month-old sister, and babysit her often. My grandparents, where I babysit her, have a large backyard pool that is now just open for the season. Since it's been in the 90's for temperatures here for the past few weeks, it's gotten me thinking about taking her into the pool this summer. She's obviously too little to swim, and so I've been looking at flotation devices to keep help keep her safe in the pool while she's in there with an adult. I can take her in there without anything, but I think it would make her (and me) feel a little more comfortable to be buoyant. I've run across baby inflatable floats, water wings, live jackets, life preservers, even baby wetsuits with foam in them. For parents who have gone through this, what do you recommend?
We have a child's pool as well for her and our 9-month-old cousin to use, but it would be nice to be able to take her into the larger pool when the rest of the family is in there.

Answer
She actually isn't too little to learn how to swim...or at the very least float. The safest thing you could probably put her in is a life jacket or a wetsuit with the jacket built in. Also never ever let her out of your immediate reach. Water wings won't do anything if she doesn't know how to tread water on her own. Baby floats or preservers can tip over and keep the child submerged. A jacket is the best thing to keep their head above water.

ADD: I just want to add. that this is a great time to start teaching her about floating and treading water. Water safety can never begin early enough.

would a toy kitchen that could be anchored in a pool be appealing to toddlers?

Billy Joe

Answer
Little kids *love* toy kitchens, but why on earth would you put it in a pool? I think that's mixing 2 different fun activities for no reason. The kitchen would certainly be more fun out of the pool, and the pool is fun itself without the kitchen.
