I'm doing a paper on gun violence and how it gives kids bad messages. And i need some help. I'm wtriting that it affects kids in toys, music and the community. But I Need more help in the community. well thanks if you give me some ides. I'll be glad to help you out too :)

Answer
I think gun violence is still greatly misunderstood, or maybe, statistics misused, from both sides of the fence. I grew up in a family where my Father was a special agent (Law Enforcement) and he always had his gun handy. In addition, me and my Father hunted, so we had shotguns, rifles, and pistols in the household. There are quite a few households out there that have guns in them, however, if I was doing a study on Gun Violence, I would ask some questions regarding Guns and Education? I was taught early on how to handle and respect a firearm. That included the importance of locking your weapons up. I would suspect that you'd see much higher, significantly, gun violence rates and its affect on kids, when not only children are not educated at some level, but the parents.

My 3 year old can be really bad he doesn't listen, he yells, he hits, he spits,he throws stuff, he breaks his toys he talks back, he throws fits and he has been potty trained since he was 2 but lately he has been not telling me when he has to pee all the time, he will just be standing there and pee his pants when we are at home, he peed in one of his toys the other day, he is also mean to other kids sometimes and adults he will push them and hit them and he spills his drinks on the floor and in the car on purpose. I have tried taking his toys, time out, putting him in the corner, talking to him, smacking his butt. Does anyone have any advice and is this normal behavior?

Answer
The ways you are disciplining are either for older kids (taking away toys) or just plain ineffective (spanking to teach don't hit? how does that make sense?).

You need to take on a more positive view of discipline. You need to be teaching him the correct ways to behave, not just reacting to what you don't like. Model the behavior you want, praise him when he does something you want to re enforce. When he hits, take his hands and tell him that hitting isn't kind and that he needs to use his words when he is mad or sad. The same applies when he throws toys. When he yells tell him you can't understand yelling and that he needs to use a softer voice. Don't respond to him until he can be calmer. And make sure you don't yell at him, that just teaches him that behavior is acceptable.

What would a 6 year old girl want for christmas?

Mad as a H

At my moms work, there's some program where you can give a family christmas gifts. My mom put me in charge of finding gifts for the kids. There is a 2 year old girl, a 3 year old boy, and a 6 year old girl. The smaller ones are easy to get gifts for. A stuffed animal and toy car or something. But six year old? So, any one know any six year old girls who have been asking constantly for some thing for christmas?

Answer
I always wanted the popular doll, or a barbie vehicle. They have cheap barbies at walmart. She might also like playdoh or something like that. Tea party set....pretty much any really girly toy, most 6 yr old girls would love :)

How do I know what the best bike for me is?

I am looking to get a bike to give me a cardio alternative to walking or running. I haven't ridden a bike since I was a kid, so I am trying to figure out what kind of bike to get -- mountain bike, road bike etc. How do I make sure that I get the right bike for me --- kind and size?

Answer
Start by reading "Bicycles: How to Choose"
http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/bicycle.html

It's all based on "where & how" you will be riding. Road bikes will be your fastest choice but for the streets & smooth roads ONLY. Mountain bikes or all-terrain bikes basically suck on the streets because of the knobby off road tires & suspension parts zapping your energy. Knobby tires slow you down. And with every turn of the pedals, part of your energy is absorbed or soaked up by suspension parts. All-terrain bikes are OK on the streets ONLY if they have a smoother "street friendly" tread design & "lock-out" front forks. This (in essence) turns the suspension fork into a rigid fork with the simple twist of a switch.

Hybrids are a good "all around" type bike. They are great at nothing - but still good at many things. They can be ridden on the streets or light (man-made) groomed off-road trails of finely crushed stone.

"How do I make sure that I get the right bike for me --- kind and size?" Nine very, very simple words... See your authorized, independent, knowledgeable, friendly, local BICYCLE shop! Not K-Mart, Wally World or Target. At a REAL bicycle shop you can TRY B4 you BUY! You can test ride as many bikes as your little heart desires before the sale!

Other advantages are...
1) Professional sales - not some minimum wage "associate".
2) Professional assembly of the bike by a certified mechanic - again, not some minimum wage associate.
3) FREE service after the sale. ALL new bikes require a tune-up as shift & brake cables stretch a bit during the break-in process. Some shops do this only once. Some for a year. A bike shop near me does this for LIFE!
http://bigshark.com/about/policies-and-shipping-pg11.htm
4) Vastly better quality. Wally World lists bicycles on their website in the TOY Dept.! Does that give you a clue? A quality bike from a REAL bicycle shop - taken care of properly - can last a lifetime. Those from discount stores are "disposable bikes", meant to be ridden a year or so - then into a dumpster.

See link below. This is my "pride & joy" - a 2011 Raleigh Sojourn touring road bike. Time spent in the shop for repairs? ZERO. Money spent after the sale? A bottle of chain oil (about $8.00) and a set of new tires when the original ones wore out. And I replaced them with the SAME tires. Flat tires to date? ZERO - none - nada. Sure - you'll need to do routine maintenance & cleaning on any type of bike. But getting a quality bike from the start cost LESS in the long run.

Answer
•When dealing with children, praise more, criticize less.

•Never say no to a gift from a child.

•Your children get only one childhood; think of this when you “don’t have time” to play, hug, kiss, and express your love for them. Make time for I’m sorry, I’m listening, I love you.

•You is smart, you is kind, you is important. [Kathryn Stockett in The Help]

•Children need models rather than critics. [Joseph Joubert (1754-1824)]

•You teach people how to treat you. It starts when your children are born. If you tolerate poor behavior, your kids will expect to get away with deplorable actions.

•There are two things you can and should give your child: roots and wings.

•Eliminate toy clutter. Children of all ages will play more creatively and independently with five toys than they will with 50.... Fewer toys allow a child to focus more effectively.... [John Rosemond in “Living With Children” 2011]

•Dealing with kids: It takes a thousand “attaboys” to erase a single “you're not good enough.” [Dr. Phil 2/12]

•A parent’s time is the coin of childhood. {Alema Pequoia}

•Children are our future: raise them with love and discipline; teach them respect and kindness.

•Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.

•Children seldom misquote you. In fact, they usually repeat word-for-word what you shouldn't have said.

•A child who learns to manage a little courtesy, even under pressure, is a child who is operating well in the world, a child with a positive prognosis.

•There’s nothing that can help you understand your beliefs more than trying to explain them to an inquisitive child. [Frank A. Clark]

•Treat the Earth well: it was not given to you by your parents; it was lent to you by your children. [Kenyan proverb]

•Manners (otherwise known as “social skills”) are at the heart of the whole parental enterprise. Every infant is born adorable but selfish and the center of the universe. It’s a parent’s job to teach children that there are other people, and that others have feelings that can be hurt.

•We are all children sometimes, in our heart of hearts. [Jude Morgan in Charlotte and Emily]

•Little child, little problems; big child, big problems. [Anna Quindlen in Every Last One]

•We don't get most of our fears as adults; we bring them from childhood. [David Wiltse in Close to the Bone]

•It’s easier to build strong children than to repair broken men. [Frederick Douglas]

•Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, you should cherish every moment and realize that the wonderment growing inside you is the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle. [Erma Bombeck (1927-1996)] (baby, childbirth, life)

•In the same way that you cannot choose your parents, neither can you choose your children. [idea from “The Talented Mr. Ripley”]

•Fill a child’s bucket of self-esteem so full that the rest of the world can’t poke enough holes in it to drain it dry.

•The only role models who have an actual impact are the ones at home at your dinner table.

•God should double your patience when you marry and triple it when you have children. {Alema Pequoia}

•Spare the rod and spoil the child is a warning, not a commandment.

•Even children have good ideas sometimes, probably because they have not yet learned prejudice and obfuscation, and do not screen their possibilities. {Alema Pequoia}

•If you truly love your children, give them more time than anything else. Your time is really all you have that is genuinely yours to give. {Alema Pequoia}

•Remember: What you do, what you say, how you listen, what you allow to happen in your family and household is the attitude and behavior you are modeling for your children that they will absorb and apply to their own lives in the future. {Alema Pequoia}

•Pay attention—real attention—to a small child. The adults who did that when you were a kid are probably your role models.

•Parental Commandments: Be consistent. Actions have consequences. Say what you mean and mean it. Parents work together as a team. Don't make promises you can't keep. Listen to your children. Establish a routine. Respect is a two-way street. Positive reinforcement works much better than negative reinforcement. Manners are universal. Define your role as parents.

How would you best entertain small children during a long plane flight?

top kids electronic toys
on The Leapfrog LeapPad 2 Explorer
top kids electronic toys image

.

We have approximately twelve hours of plane travel ahead of us Thursday. Considering the new flight restrictions, please share any ideas about what to bring or do, etc., to help the time pass.

Answer
Okay, remember a few things, first don't bring anything that beeps, bops or plays music, you will annoy all the passengers around you who are looking at relaxing during this flight you have. And the activity depends on the age of the child(ren) I have a 5 year old who was born in Germany (we are American citizens, and so are ALL our families), so we had several long flights back and forth, we also now live in Venezuela, the flights aren't as long but still, the combined flights plus layovers can be just as long/longer, I also have a son who is 16 months old (almost) who took his first flight when he was only 2 1/2 months old, he has since flown 7 times... AND we're moving back to Germany next spring. MOST (actually all my flights with my son) of the flights I have taken have been just me and the kids, my husband is in the military and has been deployed three times since my daughter (my oldest) was born, we travel a lot when he's gone. Anyway so how to entertain the kids has been a HIGH priority on my list. first thing to do is buy a new toy and keep it hidden until you get on the plane (you know how it is, an old familar toy would be seen as boring, but a new toy is always exciting), also make sure you DO have a familar toy (like a favorite stuffed animal or whatever). Make sure you bring plenty of snacks (beverages ARE still allowed on planes for children as long as you test/drink it to prove it is what you say it is). I got my daughter a doodle pad (travel size) which works great because she loves to draw and color, (coloring books are great too but you have to remember that it's easy to drop and lose crayons, and the doodle pads have "pens" that are attached). I also bought her a tick-tack-toe travel board, non-electronic, and we played that too (look in the section of your local store that has travel games for other ideas, usually it's on the same isle as the board games). Buy a new book (even if the child isn't old enough to read, you can read it to them). Don't bring things like a deck of cards (same problem as the crayons too easy to drop and lose a card, and then that usually messes up your game). Make sure your child wears layers (like a sweater on top of a t-shirt) sometimes depending on where you sit on the plane it can be quite cold, and even those little blankets they provide isn't enough to keep warm, also pack socks if your child is wearing sandals, because in order to be comfortable I'm sure your child will be kicking off the shoes, and then if the kid needs to get up and around you won't want to have to find the shoes (but I would recommend shoes in the bathroom, I know if you've flown you've experienced turbulence, most guys can't pee in the toilet when it's holding still, they are BOUND to miss and hit the floor when the toilet is being shaken around!) Also even for your 3 year old, get him/her their own backpack to carry (lightweight) toys in believe me when you are going terminal to terminal anything that YOU don't have to carry is a plus. If your child is 3 or younger I recommend taking a stroller, that way if you are in a hurry to get to your gate you can walk at YOUR pace (it's also great to load the stroller, even an umbrella stroller handles with the carry-ons you have, making it easier on YOU). We DID bring flashcards on one flight we had, (I know I said no cards) we punched a hole in the top corner of all the cards and thread them on a keyring to keep them together, I used those flashcards to help my daughter learn her numbers and letters, so something education is always great. Remember that whatever you bring has to provide HOURS of entertainment (try buying a puzzle book, simple crosswords, or find-it word games) so don't get anything that is meant as a one time use, also remember that you're restricted on space, so a toy that needs a lot of space isn't good. We also played I spy a lot. I would also recommend buying something like gummie worms or bite sized fruit chew snacks, the gummie worms work GREAT for getting the kid's ears not to hurt (obviously won't work on a child too young to chew on them), for my son I just made sure I didn't let him drink ANYTHING for at least 2-3 hours before a flight, that way when we took off he was READY for his sippy cup (he never took a bottle), the sucking on that is good for their ears too. I've also used dry cereal too. Anything to get them to chew or swallow will help their ears. (you can of course use gum on children old enough for it) If the flight is 12 hours or usually nowadays longer than 4 they will show an in flight movie... it's not always appropriate for children, and some are too young to be able to listen with the earphones on. If I knew how old your children were I could give you better examples, but I hope the ones I provided are good. Good luck, and have a safe trip!

Anyone try the electronic cigarettes?

viva_la_pe

I want to quit smoking and have been reading good and bad things about the e-cigs. Has anyone tried it? Was it successful? Thoughts, comments or concerns please!

Answer
Google for message forums about them, tons of info out there.

They are more than just water, but its nothing harmful. They use propelyne glycol (pg) and vegetable glycerin (vg), plus liquid nicotine and food flavors. People have used scare tactics with the pg, because it is an ingredient in anti freeze. BUT, it is ALSO food safe, in a great deal of our food supply, as well as fogging machines and children's toys. The vg is also food safe. Scare tactics around that are because its also sold as a skin protectant.. like you can use it as lotion. But again, in our food supply, fogging machines and kids toys.

On top of that, both chemicals are in regular cig smoke.

They feel different. They taste different. You will never find one that tastes like your cig, I went to fruit flavors.

Nicotine dosing can be hard to get right. They all advertise that one of the filter cartridges is like a carton, but in general i found it was more like a pack, give or take. The nicotine is dosed in the cartridges about the same as a pack, as well. (so, to know your nic dosage, find out how much nic is in one pack of the brand you smoke, that will equal the dose for the entire cartridge.)

Do a lot of research for model types and such. Read read read. Avoid buying kits upfront, just buy a single battery and flavor, so you can know if you like that flavor or brand or model. After you know you like what you have, then feel free to stock up, but if you dont like it, and want to abadnon the idea, or try a diff model, you arent out that much.

How much should I spend on holiday charity gifts?

My son's elementary school has a program in which each student chooses to buy gifts for those who can not afford them. My son's benevolence outweighs his sense of money, so he chose to take an entire family's wishlist. They have asked for a gameboy, another gameboy, an RC car, and gift cards to pathmark, target.
I come from a high income town, the median income is well over 100k, so I am wondering what exactly they are expecting here. How much should I give in gift cards, did they mean both stores or just one? There are so many different models of gameboys, the children asking for them are aged 7 and 8, so I dont think they are expecting brand new DS lites but I cannot know for sure. Lastly, is there any specific RC car that a 5 year old boy would have his heart set on? I would really like to make this family's holiday special, but I dont have the money to not be a little thrifty with these purchases. Any advice would be so appreciated!

Answer
That's great your son wants to give. That is such a great quality to have. Now, if the family is truly a needy family they don't need expensive game boys. Most truly needy people are Happy to get any thing. I can tell you from experience that they need toothbrushes, shoes, cloths, bubble bath soap, kid shampoos. Things they can use and eat. Kid only need a few toys. I spent less than 100 dollars on my own family, that's all I had to spend and my kids wont know any different. A friend of mine was given a gift card to walmart for back to school. The person that gave it to her told her to buy cloths and food and school supplies for her daughter. She bought movies and Cd's for her self and let the shelters give her used cloths for her daughter and made the school supply for her. So try to be specific with cards like a payless shoe source card. Grocery store gift cards are good. Hope this helps you ~~ Have a Mary Christmas!

What rc helicopter would you recommmend?

Kevin H

I am searching for them and the reviews are either 5 stars or 1 star. Each of them has a rating that says it breaks on the first flight and it also has a rating that says its really durable and its the best toy ever. What should I get?

Answer
The Air Hogs Havoc is a great beginner's helicopter and a great Christmas stuffer. It is nearly indestructable. Unless you abuse the helicopter, then it shouldnt be damaged at all. (Abuse as in drop stuff on it, shooting it) It is easy to control and easy to learn. Great for kids and adults. kids at least 8+

What are the best toys for baby that are not too expensive to buy?

best quality toys for kids

best quality toys for kids image

Jill Tregr

Looking for the best toys for baby that are affordable. We are buying tons of toys and we are trying to cut down on expenses so what toys for baby would you recommend we get?

Answer
Babies at this age need basic toys, and not all the expensive electronic gadgets.

I would look for something that encourages the baby to crawl/cruise - often toys where you push a button down, and then the toy moves further ahead.

musical toys are always a hit. I would look for something that encourages cause and effect, and better hand/eye coordination - xylophones, drums (which you can make out of an empty plastic container and a small wooden spoon), tambourines, bells, maracas and rainmakers. There are lots of baby-proof toys out there, and the baby sets can be fairly inexpensive because they are plastic and small. Also nothing wrong with pots, pans, plastic containers and wooden spoons, and spatulas.

Books - this is so important for speech development, learning how to read, setting the precedent for enjoying reading, and getting some quality time with a parent or caregiver. There are all different types of books for babies and preschoolers, just be prepared for some chewing. I still buy board books for my toddler and preschooler, because they are cheaper than the paper ones. And, some of the board books have the entire story and illustrations for 1/2 the price. Get a family library membership - libraries also offer story time even for babies.

Stacking toys and shape sorters - Wal-mart and TRU each make their own cheaper version than Fisher Price, but the FP is a thicker plastic. Be prepared that your baby will not be able to sort shapes for quite awhile. Stacking toys just need to be varying degrees of sizes, shapes and colors (to help differentiate the shape, and keep their interest). Great for hand/eye coordination and motor skills.

Blocks - get something that is easier to grasp in their small hand - larger, or squeezable, or even small. Just not too small that they are a choking hazard. TRU and Wal-mart each have their own knockoffs, which will save you a bunch of money.

Balls - I would get a bunch of softer balls. I would buy them in different sizes. If you have trouble finding them, my toddlers seem to be into the dog’s balls (we won’t go there). I don’t mind because they are indestructible (no chewing off small pieces) and most are squeezable.

And a couple of plastic containers in which to put stuff in. The stuff can be the shapes from the shape sorter, blocks, balls or other small toys. Older babies like to put stuff into a container, dump this into another container or out on the floor.

Babies are fascinated with themselves (actually I think they just see "other" babies). One of our babies went to daycare. They have a mirror, mounted behind Plexiglas) that was about 3 feet tall and 6 feet long. All the babies and toddlers were fascinated with it. A small unbreakable mirror would do. We hooked up a baby car mirror (unbreakable), that was too small for the car, up to the side of the coffee table (in this house we attached it to the railing that runs along the living room).

And the very best toy is YOU! Babies want to interact with their parents/caregivers. They want to play interactive games like Peek-a-boo, or pat-a-cake or sing nursery rhymes or children’s songs. This is the best place to find the tunes and lyrics for nursery rhymes http://kids.niehs.nih.gov/musicchild.htm Because I was never great at remembering the tune or the lyrics, or both.

What are some qualities you seek in an educational toy for a child that is 2 to 6 years old?

Key H.

I have to design a toy, and I need a little guidance. I do not have children, so I'm a bit lost in what to do. What is it you look for as a parent when it comes to educational childrens toys? Simple yet effective? Something more complex? Something that teaches multiple things such as colors, numbers, and alphabet? Just needing a little help and guidance. Thanks in advance.

Answer
When I buy toys, I'm looking for something that can be used in multiple ways by kids of different ability levels, and engages a child's creativity. I'm wary of anything that claims to be "educational" just because it has letters and numbers printed on it somewhere. Anything that talks, ties in with a tv show, or otherwise limits play options from the start, I absolutely refuse to buy. Anything that doesn't lend itself for being used for multiple purposes is not what I'm looking for. Simple is good -- I think blocks are really the ultimate learning toy for little kids, though I have lots of other toys that are a little more sophisticated that I also think are good (Wedgits, for example, or gear sets). No batteries required (and no sound emitted) is good. Anything purporting to teach numbers and the alphabet I meet with great suspicion (I'd say books -- and conversation -- are the appropriate "toys" to teach that, though something kind of abacus-like, or dominos, or something, might have some value in teaching numbers). Building toys, creative play toys, puzzles, shape sorters, etc. strike me as the toys my kids are really learning from.

If you're really trying to design a "learning" toy for children of a particular age group, do a little child development research for that age before you start to see the skills kids are picking up at those ages.

Oh yeah -- and please no lead paint, choking hazards, or other safety issues, especially if 2-year-olds are in your age range....

I'm trying to write a lesson plan where I'll have kids score short clips from movies/tv shows. I'm trying to choose things that they'll identify with- either things that are popular now, or things that they will consider "classics" the way that I consider the movie Clueless or Mean Girls or the TV show Hey! Arnold classics. Any suggestions that will speak to kids ages 13-18 today would be great!

Answer
Definetely Mean Girls, home alone, scream, bring it on, she's the man, 10 things i hate about you, karate kid, the notebook, john tucker must die, napolean dynamite, 21 jump street, coach carter, harry potter, men in black, or any Disney movies such as lion king, toy story, finding nemo, monsters inc, incredibles, beauty and the beast, up, ratatouille, etc.
For classic tv shows, those from the late 90s to mid 00s like catdog, fresh prince of bel-air, friends, loony tunes, the muppets, rugrats, lizzy maguire, spongebob squarepants, drake and josh, lilo & stich, johnny bravo, fairly odd parents, teenage mutant ninja turtles, power rangers, angry beavers, wild thornberrys

I saw in google images that 90s kids were not that mean and did not play that much video games but todays kids are faggot kids is that true guys? And did these faggot kids start in the year 1998?

Answer
Sort of, we did play a lot of video games back then (from Super Nintendo). But it seems like more kids today are not playing outside, and prefer to play computer or video games. I rarely saw toy/sport commercials that did not require a console in the 2000s, but there were many in the 90s. Oh 90's kids did not have cellphones, and rarely used the internet. We also lived in times of peace and good economy, no cold war and no 9/11 terror alerts or war with Iraq. 2000s kids probably grew up in a conservative post 9/11 America, with declining a economy. It will probably affect their decision later in life.

My 4 year old son is really shy around other children at school. It seems that every time I pick him up he is either playing alone or with one of his teachers but not with the other kids.
Anyone have any tips or good ideas that might help him open up and be a little more outgoing and less shy???

Answer
set up play dates at your house, hopefully with a couple kids from his school. I'm sure he is much more outgoing at home so if he plays with a friend or two at his house, with his toys, on his "turf" he will likely start being more outgoing with these same kids at school.

What would you do if head start teacher had a problem with your 4 year old?

Crystal

My son is 4 years old,he is delayed in his speech and is going to be evaluated from a psychiatrist later this month. My son is enrolled in homebased head start and early intervention preschool program.

There is so much to say I don't even know where to start. Basicly my sons head start teacher has a problem with him. From the way he talks, does his school work to the way he acts. When she is here at my house I catch her getting mad at him all because he rather play then give her the right answer to the question she is asking him for example of today she drew a triangle ask him what it was,and he kept saying circle, square, rectangle then smiled and said triangle. That made her mad... He goes to the center every other friday and every single time he goes I get nothing but complaints about him,it has got me to the point where my nervs are acting up and feel like taking him out of head start. I talked to the manager if you will today and she is going to talk to the teacher about this and involve the mental health and moniter the room herself as well,I'm thinking about calling them back tomorrow to ask for a new teacher if they can do that.

They are complaining about him hitting, throwing, bitting, and not following directions. Whenever I'm in the class to see how he is like I notice they don't pay attention to him,and the way his teacher treats him is just rediculous, I feel like telling that you can not put a 4 year old child in an adult setting and expect them to know what to do and how to act...

At his other preschool he is fine I mean yeah sometimes they report issues to me with him hitting his friend because he friend hit him,hit bit his friend because that same friend hit him, sharing issues, taking other childrens toys, not sitting in circle time, and him moving from toy to toy very quickly.

I noticed that whenever he's hungry tired or not feeling well he acts up more. But when he's not he has a good day. But with head start however they always find something to ***** about and am getting very upset about it...

Btw we do magic 123 at home and have some issues like the sharing, and every now and then hitting, but he's not this bad kid..

Answer
Well, it certainly sounds as if there may be an issue with his "home" teacher (if you're going to work with pre-school kids at all, you have to have patience), but I would advise you to be patient and allow the manager to observe the classroom so that she can see if there is a problem there.

We all know kids don't always behave, and sometimes they need 'reminders', but if your child is hitting, throwing, biting, etc on a regular basis then there's a big problem and it will have to be dealt with as he cannot continue to behave that way. Not to mention the fact that it's unreasonable to think that the other kids in the classroom should have to put up with that (if I had a child in the classroom, I'd probably be complaining, and I'd have a valid reason to complain).

Why are you taking him to a psychiatrist about a speech delay problem? He should be seeing his doctor, and then possible moving to a speech therapist if needed. However, he may need to see a psychiatrist about these other issues.

2002 Spiderman vs. 2012 Spiderman?

numbaonest

I saw the new one last night. To be honest, it was good and Andrew Garfield did a great job, but I still prefer the 2002 movie and overall I prefer Tobey Maguire. Some things I didn't like about the new one:
1. I thought Garfield was good, but wasn't nerdy enough. they didn't portray him as a very "nerdy" kid like Peter Parker is
2. For some reason, it really bothered me that the new Spiderman used home made spiderweb launchers on his wrists instead of it coming right out of him like the original ones. My dad says that in the normal comic books, he used webbing gadgets (I don't believe that's true) but to me it kinda made this spiderman less "spidier"
3. I thought Tobey Maguire was more of a "super hero" and had more "superhuman strength" and stuff like that. I mean, come on, when you get shot in the leg and are a super hero, that shit's supposed to tickle you
4. last but not least, I didn't really like the new outfit too much. I thought the old one was better

In conclusion, I thought Garfield was good and the movie was entertaining. i thought the story line was pretty good and the villain was ok. I still think Tobey played a much better Peter Parker even though Garfield is a hell of an actor

Answer
I agree with pretty much everything you said. The new one was really good, and will go down as one of my favorites, but the 2002 version is what I grew up with and it would have been really hard to top it

If I melt a bar of soap and then re mold it would it work? Or do you have to have a certain type of soap?

I want to get a clear bar of soap, melt it. Then put it in a mold with a small toy or other item. So that my siblings will want to wash their hands. Does the type of soap matter?

Answer
They make soap exactly for this kind of thing and it is actually the easiest to work with. It is called melt and pour soap base. It is kind of an addictive hobby. The soap made for this is formulated to melt in the microwave or over a double boiler, and is also free of dye and scent so you can add your own. You can use other soap, esp clear soaps like Neutrogena or Pear's soap work best because they are softer.

If you use a bath bar like safeguard, dial, ivory, a hard soap that is not transparent, you have to grate it, moisten the shavings, and then melt it...and you have to be careful not to just screw it up, esp if you use the microwave.

I have dealt with these people before, and you can also find soap base and other supplies at Hobby Lobby, Michael's, etc. http://www.brambleberry.com/MP-bases-C217.aspx . When you are shopping, make sure you are getting SOAP safe dyes and scents. The practices of soap and candle making share some overlap in techniques and some supplies but if you get candle stuff it may not be safe for using on the skin. Of course you can use most essential oils, and common food coloring, for any type of soap crafting.

I would use soap base myself, and get some bright color soap dye, a kid friendly scent like bubble gum or watermelon or a nice essential oil like peppermint, maybe even some cosmetic grade glitter...and be careful the toy you embed is able to handle a few minutes exposure to melted soap. IT IS VERY VERY HOT.

You can also get your fav liquid soap in a value size and get a fun kid friendly dispenser. Probably a plastic one. I guess bar and liquid soap can each be sloppy or neat, depending on who uses. You will surely find a nice variety of pump dispensers in kid friendly designs...make sure they aren't super fragile or breakable. You also might be able to find a soap dispenser that lights up or plays a song for the length of time it should take to wash their hands, similar to the two minute toothbrushes.

Here is a couple of unique ones.

when did fast food companies start putting toys with their meals?

quirkygirl

and who was the first?
best answer for the one who provides a website with proof:)

Answer
Anyone can be a big collector of fast food toys, but the simple truth is that most avid collectors are grown ups! With every new movie, video game or comic book a new toy shows up in one of the fast food chains. And, each one quickly becomes a much loved collectable for someone.

These cute little toys started out as a lure to get children to ask for the restaurants kid meals. But, adults are often seen buying these small portion meals just to get another toy to add to their collection! The small toys quickly became the biggest advertising gimmick in the world.

McDonald’s has got to be the king of fast food toys. Their first toys were introduced in 1979 and were merely items like stencils, puzzle books and erasers. Later that year, they introduced their first movie themed toys to promote the Star Trek movie.

Happy Meal Toy
With their addition of fast food toys McDonald’s has became largest toy distributor in the world! The company gives out or sells over 1.5 billion toys each year. Many of which have been grabbed up by collectors and never even opened!

They’ve also had some of the best and most popular fast food toys ever made through their alliance with Walt Disney. Although, Disney severed their ties with the food chain giant in 2006, the Walt Disney toys are one of the top collectable fast food toys.

There are literally millions of identical fast food toys given out each year. This makes them easily available and not really valuable on their own. However, since fast food toys are released in series, a collector that needs that one toy to finish their set might be willing to pay well for the toy.

The earliest fast food toys were actually added to the packaging rather than included in with the meal. During the 60’s Sonic began adding zoopicks to their cups, zoopicks were small animals made of plastic that just hung on the side of kid’s cups.

Fast food toys have came a long ways from just puzzle books and basic plastic figures. Now these tiny toys are almost identical to their larger versions sold in department stores. Manufacturers began to incorporate flashing lights, noises and even voices to many of the more modern toys.

Furby Happy Meal Toys
Although, most of the fast food toys can be bought unopened for less than $10, the value can differ greatly depending on demand. And, the highest monetary value of course is placed on completed sets of each hugely popular series.

There are around 14 fast food restaurants that use toys as a part of their advertising. And, while all aren’t actually valuable, the biggest majority of them have became collectable for many people.

With fast food toys, the value can’t be measured in dollars. The value is in the eye of the collector! Whether it’s because the toy promotes a favorite movie, a much loved comic book hero or a popular television show, fast food toys are well loved, treasured collectables!

I'm going to be staying there for a year and I want stories. I'm sorry if it sounds like an invasion of privacy, but I won't know who you are. Just leave names and shit out. I really want to hear stories. :)

Answer
Hi :) Here is a basic story of my life :P

I am a 17year old female born in Auckland, NZ. 3 weeks later my family moved to Whakatane, where we lived in 2 homes, one next door to Mongrel Mob members, and then later next to the community constable!! lol. When we lived next door to the Mongrel Mob family, one of their kids kept walking across our front lawn with a defiant attitude, so one day mum baked some cookies and made friends with him - he never did it again...... And when we lived door to the policeman, my older sister used to go over and play with his daughter. Well one day, she went over and played with the toys (the other little girl wasn't there) and the constable didn't realise and left home locking my sister in his house!! haha I don't think his workmates let him forget that one in a hurry!

I'm not sure where and what we did after that, but we ended back up in Auckland where we rented a house in Oratia, West Auckland. That was great as it was right next to an exotic plant orchard and there were heaps of feijoa, passionfruit and other yummy fruit trees. That was the place where my bunny disappeared to who knows where - I don't even know how he got out, there were no holes or anything, and where a huge native weta crawled up my mums arm while she was reading - poor thing, it was more scared of her than she of it! lol.

A few years of living there, we moved to the South Island, to Christchurch to look after dads parents house while they went to England for a few months. Probably the most memorable thing that happened down there was the times I tagged along with my brother (older by 2 years) riding our bikes - to school, the bike track, all sorts of places. It was great. I don't think he'd let his little sister tag along now though lol.

Then, we moved down to Wanaka!! Now that was cool. And if you ever get a chance to travel to the south Island, go to Wanaka/ or Queenstown. There is sooooo much to do there and the countryside is just beautiful. And the fruit! MMMMmmm yum! Unfortunately, it didn't snow very heavily, just one day it snowed a light sprinkling as we came out of school. That was pretty cool. The next day all the kids were having snow fights and piling snow onto this little hill outside the classrooms and sliding down. It was packed so solid from all the sliding down that it was almost as if it were ice - and very slippery! It was really cold that day, we were all huddled around the heater in the morning. Why are schools always cold??!!!! haha

We moved back to Auckland 7 years ago, and thats where we've been ever since (we moved back on my birthday so that was delayed and I was not impressed :P ). I have been to Australia, and am going there in a few months again. During my whole life, though, we have taken many trips around the country so to date I have only never been to Cape Reinga and Invercargill. I'll get there sooner or later :D. I have been to 9 schools in total (including kindergarten) and I am in year 13 (my last year).

Now that you've got me to thinking about it, I am very privileged to have had all these experiences, plus more, and I thank God for all the blessings he has given me. My family is not rich, but we make the most of things and somehow manage to get through by working hard and trusting God.

Well, that is my life in a nutshell....there is so much more, but it'd take a whole book or more to write it all. If you have any other questions about my life in NZ feel free to email me by going onto my Yahoo! profile, and click email me lol.

Hope I wasn't too boring. (but you did ask, and I was bored.... :D ) cya

My 24 month old son arranged his toy cars from small to big in a líne in the middle Of his bedroom. it looks very clever since he used 6 different sizes cars starting from a 2 inch toy wheel to a ride on car. That and operating the remote control to watch his tv show after getting some dry cheerios to snack on.

My daughter just turned 2 and when I went to get her this morning she had gotten dressed in her day clothes. That was a first for her to take her jammies and pull up and get dressed on her own.

what is your toddler getting for christmas?

Pretty Mag

my son is turning 2 in january. last christmas we bought lots of toys that he still has not shown interest in. now we know that his favorite thing is toy cars and trucks, so we bought several big ones, one remote control one, and then small hotwheels to stick in his stocking. BORING, or what? oh well, those are his favorite things in the world. sometimes i wish landon had a twin sister! those zhu zhu pets would be fun. and squinkies! (sp?) what is your toddler/baby/child getting?

Answer
Our 2 yr old got a tricycle, a mini punching bag and gloves (not a real punching bag, more like those ones that you hit and it falls down and pops back up) bathtub paint, and a GI Joe. Then we're going to put some hot wheel cars in his stocking.

What advice would you give to a new mum about raising kids?

Arlette

What advice would you give to a new mum about raising kids that you wish someone had told you? My babys due on Christmas Day!

Answer
1. You won't need half the crap that you bring to the hospital with you. And it will be a pain in the butt to carry it all home.
2. There are tons of stupid baby gadgets out there. Don't get suckered into things like baby wipes warmers, knee-pads for crawlers, etc.
3. It will be much harder than you ever expected, and so much more rewarding than you ever expected.
4. Let your partner help. Insist that your partner helps.
5. Even with a newborn, you need time alone. Give the baby to your partner, a grandparent, anything, and get out of the house for an hour, ALONE! Get a pedicure, buy a book, or just go grocery shopping by yourself, at least once a month.

Plastic

As a new parent i need some idea's ^^
Their four years old and i already got a bag full of little toys for the dollar store and plan to get candy.Share you idea's?

Answer
When my kids were small, we skipped the baskets entirely, placing candies and the like in outside "container type" toys. You know, a plastic wheelbarrow lined with with Easter grass, some candy, and outdoor items such as a ball, sidewalk chalk, a jump rope, yoyo, etc...

Some years I used new sandbox buckets and filled them with sandbox toys.... Anything outdoorsy after a long winter spent inside was always a hit.

And yes, for the naysayers I do know that Easter is not Christmas... However, I was a single mom with three boys and an extremely tight budget. There was no money for just buying outside toys as they were needed... That just wasn't happening, so I used the money I might otherwise spend on a bunch of candy to buy them toys that would get them outside and moving....

So far as candy went, I'd buy bags of Reese eggs, jelly beans and the like, and then I would divide it between all the "baskets." Everyone got one special chocolate bunny.

Your kids are still little, they'll appreciate almost anything...

A very Happy Easter to you and yours. :)

What are you getting your kids for Easter?

Mommy to 4

Im asking to see if other parents get there kids a few toys for Easter also I already went Easter shopping I went tonight I got tons of candy, books, and and 3 toys a piece for my 3 kids.

Answer
This year we are not giving any gifts to each other instead our food ministry group is doing a sit down dinner for about 60 less fortunate people. We have Easter baskets for all there kids and we are going to be the ones waiting tables. We want to teach our children that its not always about getting stuff. Sometimes it needs to be about giving to. It seems like every holiday is becoming more and more about getting things for ourselves. Wish we could do more but if everyone does a little bit we can all make a difference.

I know they love people so much but for the little ones do they feel like they're their kids or it's their job to watch them more or what?

Answer
It's born in them!

Nobody knows exactly how long ago the dog split with the wolf and joined up with mankind, but it was thousands and thousands of years ago:

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/ondeadline/post/2012/01/domesticated-dogs-may-go-back-30000-years/1

They have been with us for so long, that they have developed a better naural sense of human body language than even the Chimp or the Wolf. They consider us part of their 'pack' and look after us.
http://www.thecrimson.com/article/2002/12/5/study-shows-dogs-learned-to-read/

Some scientists now believe that an average adult dog has the IQ of a 7year old and the social savvy of a 14 year old!

That is not to say that they are people, they are still dogs and communicate in a dog way. If humans want to train dogs or solve problems, then we still have to learn their language and work with it:
http://www.youtube.com/user/kikopup

But, they are smart, social, and they love us. They think a little differently and have instincts of their own but that intelligence and social skill does make them very childlike at times.

They are among mankinds oldest companions, maybe it's starting to rub off:) Besides most dog learn that kids like to play, have all the good toys and are natural cookie dispensers :)

Is the daycare i work at ethical and how do you discipline a 2 year-old that have a hard time listening?

Kaycee

I am 17 years old and i work at a daycare. I have worked there since may 2012 to current day and i am ready to quit!!!! I work in pre-preschool room also known as the 2-3 year old room. My first problem is that the age range is actually a year and eight months to over 3 years old. Its hard to teach the kids something because when i ask the kids what color something is one of the kids will say "blue" and another kid will say "wall" they don't all understand the same material. My second problem is that I a hard time watching 8 kids by myself ( the teach-kid ratio is 1:8). I feel like a lot of the kids at my daycare need individual attention because they all act out or they mimic their friends when they are doing something naughty, sitting in time-out, or crying. The other teachers (the daytime staff) lets the kids go "potty" by themselves. One teacher even left a child in the bathroom for 10 to 20 mins to make him not scared of pooping in the toilet. I do not agree with letting kids go by themselves because they mess around playing in the sinks or toilets or they get scared and i mean when you think about it, you dont know if a kid slips and falls in the bathroom and needs help and they make it seem like taking 5-7 kids in the bathroom that is made for 2 people is okay. When i tried that i had kids playing in the sink and in the toilet and running around with their friends and screaming and spitting in the toilet and i dint feel like i was giving the kids the time and attention to make sure they went potty all the way. So i started taking 2-3 kids potty each time. It was less stressful for me but other workers started complaining that i wasn't doing my share of the work. because i was constantly out of the room and i had the other teacher if there was on in my room change the kids that dont go potty get while i would take them potty. My boss then complained to me about how i need to be more interactive with the kids and i try really hard to be but its hard to talk to a group of 2-4 kids while other kids are i guess in my "blind spots" Idk if they are throwing toys or getting into shelves they arent suppose to or hitting other kids. So to be safe i stand in a corner during play time so i can watch all the kids and make sure nothing is going wrong. My problem is it seems like the kids no matter what i try dont listen to me. I put them in timeout and they get right back up and i keep putting them in it and they dont understand they are in timeout no matter how many times i put his but on the ground then i have other kids that flex their legs and say no and scream and kick and hit and gets right back up out of time out. its hard to keep them in time out and watch the kids the other teachers even went as far as putting him in a high chair for a few mins. Idk how to get them to listen to me. Ive tried everything i talk to them nicely and tell them what they did was wrong, i tell them in a stern voice that wasnt okay and thas why are in timeout and they dont listen and they still do the thing i told them not to do. And once one kids is doing something naughty when i do get them all setttled down then they all start doing it like when im reading a book one of them gets up and runs around so i try to be more interactive and yet they all start running around so i change what im doing to try to grab their attention, It seems like the kids listen to the other teachers but in my opinion i think how they act is VERY wrong. they discipline the kids by yelling their name and telling them to knock it off and ive seen teachers do stuff like slam a kid down on the the bench and say you do not eat off the ground and smack his hands and ive seen a teacher take a kid by his hair on the back of his head and yank his head back and say you do not get into the shelf. Today one of the teachers body checked a kid and laughed and said that is why you dont walk where im walking and then for lunch they fed them fish and one of the kids is allergic to fish so he had his own food well he ended up taking someone elses fish and he has a allergic reaction to it and his lips got red and puffy and he threw up and they called his mom and his mom wanted them to use someone elses medicine because he didnt have any there. Also they discipline he children by saying stuff like if not good im going to take you to go see mr spiderman ( all of the kids r scared of this spiderman figure that my boss had in his office around Halloween time). Idk what to do anymore i couldn't tell you how many times i have come home from work crying and upset. Im constantly feeling overwhelmed and people at my work think im slacking and so if i tell my boss i feel overwhelmed then he will really think im slacking, PLEASE help me as soon as you can im so close to saying im quitting and finding another job because i don't think its ethical and its to stressful.

I do not know where you live but where I live a 1 to 8 ratio I'd not correct for 2 year olds (I think it is 1 to 4).
I would look up regulations in your area to see what the regulations are in your area.
Also to me it sounds like none of the staff have any formal child care training. I suspect there are other violations at your place of work (I cannot over-emphasise how dangerous it is to let a 2 year old go into the bathroom by themselves, a toilet has more than enough water to drown in).
Also the space does not seem to be very well thought out. When you have a room full of 2 year olds (especially with a ratio of 1 to 8) there should not be lots of places that the children can get themselves into trouble (ie there should not be shelves that they are not allowed to get into at child level).

Personally what I would do is at the moment work as hard as you can. Ask your employer for a reference (I usually write one for myself and email it to my employer, it is easier for them as they don't need to bother writing it themselves, but they can still change/ add things if they want). After you get a reference I would put in my notice and leave (not necessarily immediately, but it is good to get the reference ASAP so you can leave whenever you want).

If you feel that things are dangerous you may need to report your workplace (anonymously).

Saw these new little cubes on the Disney Channel or Nick that are red, yellow, etc. They have a little screen that looks like a little miniature tv. The more cubes you connect, the more the little figures or people inside them do. I thought they were called "Cubicles", but I am unable to find them anywhere on the internet. Need the name, correct spelling and where to purchase. Also, if you know the cost, that would be helpful.

What are some good toy ideas for a 10 month old?

talk nerdy

I have a 10 month old daughter and I want to get rid of her baby toys and get her some more age appropriate ones. Im looking for things that are more interactive and will help her learn new skills.
Does anyone have any suggestions. What toys did your kids love at this age.
